This article is devoted to the analysis of the parabolic–parabolic chemotaxis system with multi-components over $\mathbb{R}^2$. The optimal small initial condition on the global existence of solutions for multi-species chemotaxis model in the fully parabolic situation had not been attained as far as the author knows. In this paper, we prove that under the sub-critical mass condition, any solutions to conflict-free system exist globally. Moreover, the global existence of solutions to system with strong self-repelling effect has been discussed even for large initial data. The proof is based on the modified free energy functional and the Moser–Trudinger inequality for system.

In this paper, we investigate an initial-boundary value problem of a reaction–diffusion equation in a bounded domain with a Robin boundary condition and introduce some particular parameters to consider the non-zero flux on the boundary. This problem arises in the study of mosquito populations under the intervention of the population replacement method, where the boundary condition takes into account the inflow and outflow of individuals through the boundary. Using phase plane analysis, the present paper studies the existence and properties of non-constant steady-state solutions depending on several parameters. Then, we prove some sufficient conditions for their stability. We show that the long-time efficiency of this control method depends strongly on the size of the treated zone and the migration rate. To illustrate these theoretical results, we provide some numerical simulations in the framework of mosquito population control.

Exact solutions are constructed for a class of nonlinear hyperbolic reaction-diffusion equations in two-space dimensions. Reduction of variables and subsequent solutions follow from a special nonclassical symmetry that uncovers a conditionally integrable system, equivalent to the linear Helmholtz equation. The hyperbolicity is commonly associated with a speed limit due to a delay, $\tau $, between gradients and fluxes. With lethal boundary conditions on a circular domain wherein a species population exhibits logistic growth of Fisher–KPP type with equal time lag, the critical domain size for avoidance of extinction does not depend on $\tau $. A diminishing exact solution within a circular domain is also constructed, when the reaction represents a weak Allee effect of Huxley type. For a combustion reaction of Arrhenius type, the only known exact solution that is finite but unbounded is extended to allow for a positive $\tau $.

The dynamics of interfaces in slow diffusion equations with strong absorption are studied. Asymptotic methods are used to give descriptions of the behaviour local to a comprehensive range of possible singular events that can occur in any evolution. These events are: when an interface changes its direction of propagation (reversing and anti-reversing), when an interface detaches from an absorbing obstacle (detaching), when two interfaces are formed by film rupture (touchdown) and when the solution undergoes extinction. Our account of extinction and self-similar reversing and anti-reversing is built upon previous work; results on non-self-similar reversing and anti-reversing and on the various types of detachment and touchdown are developed from scratch. In all cases, verification of the asymptotic results against numerical solutions to the full PDE is provided. Self-similar solutions, both of the full equation and of its asymptotic limits, play a central role in the analysis.

We prove a result on the existence and uniqueness of the solution of a new feature-preserving nonlinear nonlocal diffusion equation for signal denoising for the one-dimensional case. The partial differential equation is based on a novel diffusivity coefficient that uses a nonlocal automatically detected parameter related to the local bounded variation and the local oscillating pattern of the noisy input signal.

We study a free boundary problem of the form: ut = uxx + f(t, u) (g(t) < x < h(t)) with free boundary conditions h′(t) = −ux(t, h(t)) – α(t) and g′(t) = −ux(t, g(t)) + β(t), where β(t) and α(t) are positive T-periodic functions, f(t, u) is a Fisher–KPP type of nonlinearity and T-periodic in t. This problem can be used to describe the spreading of a biological or chemical species in time-periodic environment, where free boundaries represent the spreading fronts of the species. We study the asymptotic behaviour of bounded solutions. There are two T-periodic functions α0(t) and α*(t; β) with 0 < α0 < α* which play key roles in the dynamics. More precisely, (i) in case 0 < β< α0 and 0 < α < α*, we obtain a trichotomy result: (i-1) spreading, that is, h(t) – g(t) → +∞ and u(t, ⋅ + ct) → 1 with $c\in (-\overline{l},\overline{r})$, where $ \overline{l}:=\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^{T}l(s)ds$, $\overline{r}:=\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^{T}r(s)ds$, the T-periodic functions −l(t) and r(t) are the asymptotic spreading speeds of g(t) and h(t) respectively (furthermore, r(t) > 0 > −l(t) when 0 < β < α < α0; r(t) = 0 > −l(t) when 0 < β < α = α0; $0 \gt \overline{r} \gt -\overline{l}$ when 0 < β < α0 < α < α*); (i-2) vanishing, that is, $\lim\limits_{t \to \mathcal {T}}h(t) = \lim\limits_{t \to \mathcal {T}}g(t)$ and $\lim\limits_{t \to \mathcal {T}}\max\limits_{g(t)\leq x\leq h(t)} u(t,x)=0$, where $\mathcal {T}$ is some positive constant; (i-3) transition, that is, g(t) → −∞, h(t) → −∞, $0<\lim\limits_{t \to \infty}[h(t)-g(t)] \lt +\infty$ and u(t, ⋅) → V(t, ⋅), where V is a T-periodic solution with compact support. (ii) in case β ≥ α0 or α ≥ α*, vanishing happens for any solution.

We study an initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a cylinder $\Pi =\{x=(x_{h}, x_3)\ \vert \vert x_{h} \vert \gt 1\}$, subject to the slip boundary condition. We construct unique global solutions for axisymmetric initial data $u_0\in L^{3}\cap L^{2}(\Pi )$ satisfying the decay condition of the swirl component $ru^{\theta }_{0}\in L^{\infty }(\Pi )$.

We prove a gradient estimate for graphical spacelike mean curvature flow with a general Neumann boundary condition in dimension n = 2. This then implies that the mean curvature flow exists for all time and converges to a translating solution.

For bounded domains Ω, we prove that the Lp-norm of a regular function with compact support is controlled by weighted Lp-norms of its gradient, where the weight belongs to a class of symmetric non-negative definite matrix-valued functions. The class of weights is defined by regularity assumptions and structural conditions on the degeneracy set, where the determinant vanishes. In particular, the weight A is assumed to have rank at least 1 when restricted to the normal bundle of the degeneracy set S. This generalization of the classical Poincaré inequality is then applied to develop a robust theory of first-order Lp-based Sobolev spaces with matrix-valued weight A. The Poincaré inequality and these Sobolev spaces are then applied to produce various results on existence, uniqueness and qualitative properties of weak solutions to boundary-value problems for degenerate elliptic, degenerate parabolic and degenerate hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) of second order written in divergence form, where A is calibrated to the matrix of coefficients of the second-order spatial derivatives. The notion of weak solution is variational: the spatial states belong to the matrix-weighted Sobolev spaces with p = 2. For the degenerate elliptic PDEs, the Dirichlet problem is treated by the use of the Poincaré inequality and Lax–Milgram theorem, while the treatment of the Cauchy–Dirichlet problem for the degenerate evolution equations relies only on the Poincaré inequality and the parabolic and hyperbolic counterparts of the Lax–Milgram theorem.

We propose amixed spectral method for heat transfer in unbounded domains, using generalised Hermite functions and Legendre polynomials. Some basic results on the mixed generalised Hermite-Legendre orthogonal approximation are established, which plays important roles in spectral methods for various problems defined on unbounded domains. As an example, the mixed generalised Hermite-Legendre spectral scheme is constructed for anisotropic heat transfer. Its convergence is proven, and some numerical results demonstrate the spectral accuracy of this approach.

A cross-diffusion system modelling the information herding of individuals is analysed in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions. The variables are the species' density and an influence function which modifies the information state of the individuals. The cross-diffusion term may stabilize or destabilize the system. Furthermore, it allows for a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. Exploiting this structure, the global-in-time existence of weak solutions and the exponential decay to the constant steady state is proved in certain parameter regimes. This approach does not extend to all parameters. We investigate local bifurcations from homogeneous steady states analytically to determine whether this defines the validity boundary. This analysis shows that generically there is a gap in the parameter regime between the entropy approach validity and the first local bifurcation. Next, we use numerical continuation methods to track the bifurcating non-homogeneous steady states globally and to determine non-trivial stationary solutions related to herding behaviour. In summary, we find that the main boundaries in the parameter regime are given by the first local bifurcation point, the degeneracy of the diffusion matrix and a certain entropy decay validity condition. We study several parameter limits analytically as well as numerically, with a focus on the role of changing a linear damping parameter as well as a parameter controlling the cross-diffusion. We suggest that our paradigm of comparing bifurcation-generated obstructions to the parameter validity of global-functional methods could also be of relevance for many other models beyond the one studied here.

We investigate a non-isothermal diffuse-interface model that describes the dynamics of two-phase incompressible flows with thermo-induced Marangoni effect. The governing PDE system consists of the Navier--Stokes equations coupled with convective phase-field and energy transport equations, in which the surface tension, fluid viscosity and thermal diffusivity are allowed to be temperature dependent functions. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions when the spatial dimension is two and three. Then, in the two-dimensional case, assuming that the L∞-norm of the initial temperature is suitably bounded with respect to the coefficients of the system, we prove the existence of global weak solutions as well as the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions.

For parabolic linear operators $L$ of second order in divergence form, we prove that the solvability of initial ${{L}^{p}}$ Dirichlet problems for the whole range $1\,<\,p\,<\,\infty $ is preserved under appropriate small perturbations of the coefficients of the operators involved. We also prove that if the coefficients of $L$ satisfy a suitable controlled oscillation in the form of Carleson measure conditions, then for certain values of $p\,>\,1$, the initial ${{L}^{p}}$ Dirichlet problem associated with $Lu\,=\,0$ over non-cylindrical domains is solvable. The results are adequate adaptations of the corresponding results for elliptic equations.

This article is to discuss the bilinear and linear immersed finite element (IFE) solutions generated from the algebraic multigrid solver for both stationary and moving interface problems. For the numerical methods based on finite difference formulation and a structured mesh independent of the interface, the stiffness matrix of the linear system is usually not symmetric positive-definite, which demands extra efforts to design efficient multigrid methods. On the other hand, the stiffness matrix arising from the IFE methods are naturally symmetric positive-definite. Hence the IFE-AMG algorithm is proposed to solve the linear systems of the bilinear and linear IFE methods for both stationary and moving interface problems. The numerical examples demonstrate the features of the proposed algorithms, including the optimal convergence in both L2 and semi-H1 norms of the IFE-AMG solutions, the high efficiency with proper choice of the components and parameters of AMG, the influence of the tolerance and the smoother type of AMG on the convergence of the IFE solutions for the interface problems, and the relationship between the cost and the moving interface location.

This article discusses key characteristics of a semi-adaptive finite difference method for solving singular degenerate reaction-diffusion equations. Numerical stability, monotonicity, and convergence are investigated. Numerical experiments illustrate the discussion. The study reconfirms and improves several of our earlier results.

This paper deals with some non-linear initial-boundary value problems under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in which the solutions may blow up in finite time. Using a first-order differential inequality technique, lower bounds for blow-up time are determined.

We introduce certain energy functionals to complex Monge–Ampère equations over bounded domains with inhomogeneous boundary conditions, and use these functionals to show the convergence of solutions to certain parabolic Monge–Ampère equations.

In this paper we establish a priori${{h}^{1}}$-estimates in a bounded domain for parabolic equations with vanishing $\text{LMO}$ coefficients.

This paper is mainly concerned with the critical extinction and blow-up exponents for the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary-value problem of the fast diffusive polytropic filtration equation with reaction sources.
