Singularly perturbed ordinary differential equations often exhibit Stokes’ phenomenon, which describes the appearance and disappearance of oscillating exponentially small terms across curves in the complex plane known as Stokes lines. These curves originate at singular points in the leading-order solution to the differential equation. In many important problems, it is impossible to obtain a closed-form expression for these leading-order solutions, and it is therefore challenging to locate these singular points. We present evidence that the analytic leading-order solution of a linear differential equation can be replaced with a numerical rational approximation using the adaptive Antoulas–Anderson (AAA) method. Despite such an approximation having completely different singularity types and locations, we show that the subsequent exponential asymptotic analysis accurately predicts the exponentially small behaviour present in the solution. For sufficiently small values of the asymptotic parameter, this approach breaks down; however, the range of validity may be extended by increasing the number of poles in the rational approximation. We present a related nonlinear problem and discuss the challenges that arise due to nonlinear effects. Overall, our approach allows for the study of exponentially small asymptotic effects without requiring an exact analytic form for the leading-order solution; this permits exponential asymptotic methods to be used in a much wider range of applications.

In this paper, we construct two classes of rational function operators using the Poisson integrals of the function on the whole real axis. The convergence rates of the uniform and mean approximation of such rational function operators on the whole real axis are studied.

We transpose the parametric geometry of numbers, recently created by Schmidt and Summerer, to fields of rational functions in one variable and analyze, in that context, the problem of simultaneous approximation to exponential functions.

In this work type II Hermite-Padé approximants for a vector of Cauchy transforms of smooth Jacobi-type densities are considered. It is assumed that densities are supported on mutually disjoint intervals (an Angelesco system with complex weights). The formulae of strong asymptotics are derived for any ray sequence of multi-indices.

We study the radius of absolute monotonicity $R$ of rational functions with numerator and denominator of degree $s$ that approximate the exponential function to order $p$. Such functions arise in the application of implicit $s$-stage, order $p$ Runge–Kutta methods for initial value problems, and the radius of absolute monotonicity governs the numerical preservation of properties like positivity and maximum-norm contractivity. We construct a function with $p=2$ and $R>2s$, disproving a conjecture of van de Griend and Kraaijevanger. We determine the maximum attainable radius for functions in several one-parameter families of rational functions. Moreover, we prove earlier conjectured optimal radii in some families with two or three parameters via uniqueness arguments for systems of polynomial inequalities. Our results also prove the optimality of some strong stability preserving implicit and singly diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta methods. Whereas previous results in this area were primarily numerical, we give all constants as exact algebraic numbers.

New numerical methods based on collocation methods with the mechanical quadrature rules are proposed to solve some systems of singular integro-differential equations that are defined on arbitrary smooth closed contours of the complex plane. We carry out the convergence analysis in classical Hölder spaces. A numerical example is also presented.

We study complex commutative Banach algebras (and, more generally, continuous inverse algebras) in which the holomorphic functions of a fixed $n$-tuple of elements are dense. In particular, we characterize the compact subsets of ${{\mathbb{C}}^{n}}$ which appear as joint spectra of such $n$ -tuples. The characterization is compared with several established notions of holomorphic convexity by means of approximation conditions.

We prove convergence of diagonal multipoint Padé approximants of Stieltjes-type functions when a certain moment problem is determinate. This is used for the study of the convergence of Fourier–Padé and nonlinear Fourier–Padé approximants for such type of functions.

We present a systematic method of approximating, to an arbitrary accuracy, a probability measure µ on x = [0,1]q, q 1, with invariant measures for iterated function systems by matching its moments. There are two novel features in our treatment. 1. An infinite set of fixed affine contraction maps on , w2, · ·· }, subject to an ‘ϵ-contractivity' condition, is employed. Thus, only an optimization over the associated probabilities pi is required. 2. We prove a collage theorem for moments which reduces the moment matching problem to that of minimizing the collage distance between moment vectors. The minimization procedure is a standard quadratic programming problem in the pi which can be solved in a finite number of steps. Some numerical calculations for the approximation of measures on [0, 1] are presented.

A function f analytic in any disc of radius greater than 1 is approximated in the L2-sense over a class of polynomials which also interpolate f on a subset of the roots of unity. The resulting solution is used to discuss Walsh-type equiconvergence. The main theorem of the paper generalizes certain results of Walsh, Rivlin and Cavaretta et al.

Assume ƒ is continuous on the closed disk D1 : |z| ≤ 1, analytic in |z| ≤ 1, but not analytic on D1. Our concern is with the behavior of the zeros of the polynomials of best uniform approximation to ƒ on D1. It is known that, for such ƒ, every point of the circle |z| = 1 is a cluster point of the set of all zeros of Here we show that this property need not hold for every subsequence of the Specifically, there exists such an f for which the zeros of a suitable subsequence all tend to infinity. Further, for near-best polynomial approximants, we show that this behavior can occur for the whole sequence. Our examples can be modified to apply to approximation in the Lq-norm on |z|= 1 and to uniform approximation on general planar sets (including real intervals).

We give an estimate for the error of Lp approximation by reciprocals of polynomials. These estimates are the analogues of the Jackson and Ditzian - Totik estimates for polynomial approximation.

It is reasonable to expect that, under suitable conditions, Padé approximants should provide nearly optimal rational approximations to analytic functions in the unit disc. This is shown to be the case for ez in the sense that main diagonal Padé approximants are shown to converge as expeditiously as best uniform approximants. Some more general but less precise related results are discussed.
