We present a mathematical model built to describe the fluid dynamics for the heat transfer fluid in a parabolic trough power plant. Such a power plant consists of a network of tubes for the heat transport fluid. In view of optimisation tasks in the planning and in the operational phase, it is crucial to find a compromise between a very detailed description of many possible physical phenomena and a necessary simplicity needed for a fast and robust computational approach. We present the model, a numerical approach, simulation for single tubes and also for realistic network settings. In addition, we optimise the power output with respect to the operational parameters.

A second order Ghost Fluid method is proposed for the treatment of interface problems of elliptic equations with discontinuous coefficients. By appropriate use of auxiliary virtual points, physical jump conditions are enforced at the interface. The signed distance function is used for the implicit description of irregular domain. With the additional unknowns, high order approximation considering the discontinuity can be built. To avoid the ill-conditioned matrix, the interpolation stencils are selected adaptively to balance the accuracy and the numerical stability. Additional equations containing the jump restrictions are assembled with the original discretized algebraic equations to form a new sparse linear system. Several Krylov iterative solvers are tested for the newly derived linear system. The results of a series of 1-D, 2-D tests show that the proposed method possesses second order accuracy in L∞ norm. Besides, the method can be extended to the 3-D problems straightforwardly. Numerical results reveal the present method is highly efficient and robust in dealing with the interface problems of elliptic equations.

Implicit time integration schemes are popular because their relaxed stability constraints can result in better computational efficiency. For time-accurate unsteady simulations, it has been well recognized that the inherent dispersion and dissipation errors of implicit Runge-Kutta schemes will reduce the computational accuracy for large time steps. Yet for steady state simulations using the time-dependent governing equations, these errors are often overlooked because the intermediate solutions are of less interest. Based on the model equation dy/dt=(μ+iλ)y of scalar convection diffusion systems, this study examines the stability limits, dispersion and dissipation errors of four diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta-type schemes on the complex (μ+iλ)Δt plane. Through numerical experiments, it is shown that, as the time steps increase, the A-stable implicit schemes may not always have reduced CPU time and the computations may not always remain stable, due to the inherent dispersion and dissipation errors of the implicit Runge-Kutta schemes. The dissipation errors may decelerate the convergence rate, and the dispersion errors may cause large oscillations of the numerical solutions. These errors, especially those of high wavenumber components, grow at large time steps. They lead to difficulty in the convergence of the numerical computations, and result in increasing CPU time or even unstable computations as the time step increases. It is concluded that an optimal implicit time integration scheme for steady state simulations should have high dissipation and low dispersion.

In this paper, we propose a novel and simple technique to construct effective difference schemes for solving systems of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion-reaction equations, whose solutions may display boundary or interior layers. We illustrate the technique by taking the Il'in-Allen-Southwell scheme for 1-D scalar equations as a basis to derive a formally second-order scheme for 1-D coupled systems and then extend the scheme to 2-D case by employing an alternating direction approach. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the high performance of the obtained scheme on uniform meshes as well as piecewise-uniform Shishkin meshes.

We apply the immersed boundary (or IB) method to simulate deformation and detachment of a periodic array of wall-bounded biofilm colonies in response to a linear shear flow. The biofilm material is represented as a network of Hookean springs that are placed along the edges of a triangulation of the biofilm region. The interfacial shear stress, lift and drag forces acting on the biofilm colony are computed by using fluid stress jump method developed by Williams, Fauci and Gaver [Disc. Con-tin. Dyn. Sys. B 11(2):519–540, 2009], with a modified version of their exclusion filter. Our detachment criterion is based on the novel concept of an averaged equivalent continuum stress tensor defined at each IB point in the biofilm which is then used to determine a corresponding von Mises yield stress; wherever this yield stress exceeds a given critical threshold the connections to that node are severed, thereby signalling the onset of a detachment event. In order to capture the deformation and detachment behaviour of a biofilm colony at different stages of growth, we consider a family of four biofilm shapes with varying aspect ratio. For each aspect ratio, we varied the spacing between colonies to investigate role of spatial clustering in offering protection against detachment. Our numerical simulations focus on the behaviour of weak biofilms (with relatively low yield stress threshold) and investigate features of the fluid-structure interaction such as locations of maximum shear and increased drag. The most important conclusions of this work are: (a) reducing the spacing between colonies reduces drag by from 50 to 100% and alters the interfacial shear stress profile, suggesting that even weak biofilms may be able to grow into tall structures because of the protection they gain from spatial proximity with other colonies; (b) the commonly employed detachment strategy in biofilm models based only on interfacial shear stress can lead to incorrect or inaccurate results when applied to the study of shear induced detachment of weak biofilms. Our detachment strategy based on equivalent continuum stresses provides a unified and consistent IB framework that handles both sloughing and erosion modes of biofilm detachment, and is consistent with strategies employed in many other continuum based biofilm models.

This study aims to develop a numerical scheme in collocated Cartesian grids to solve the level set equation together with the incompressible two-phase flow equations. A seventh-order accurate upwinding combined compact difference (UCCD7) scheme has been developed for the approximation of the first-order spatial derivative terms shown in the level set equation. Developed scheme has a higher accuracy with a three-point grid stencil to minimize phase error. To preserve the mass of each phase all the time, the temporal derivative term in the level set equation is approximated by the sixth-order accurate symplectic Runge-Kutta (SRK6) scheme. All the simulated results for the dam-break, Rayleigh-Taylor instability, bubble rising, two-bubble merging, and milkcrown problems in two and three dimensions agree well with the available numerical or experimental results.

There exist many spatial discretization schemes that are well able to provide accurate and stable approximations for isothermal turbulent flows. Comparatively little analysis has been made of the performance of these schemes in the presence of temperature gradients driven by combustion. In this paper, the effects of temperature gradients on numerical stability are explored. A surprising result is that temperature gradients in the flow have a tendency to impinge on left half plane (LHP) stability of the spatial discretization scheme. Reasons for this tendency are explored and two remedies are proposed: one based on the particular class of finite difference schemes, and one based on an alternative method of boundary condition specification.

In this paper, we propose two initialization techniques for the lattice Boltzmann method. The first one is based on the theory of asymptotic analysis developed in [M. Junk and W.-A. Yong, Asymptotic Anal., 35(2003)]. By selecting consistent macroscopic quantities, this initialization leads to the second-order convergence for both velocity and pressure. Another one is an improvement of the consistent initial conditions proposed in [R. W. Mei, L.-S. Luo, P. Lallemand and D. d’Humières, Comput. Fluids, 35(2006)]. The improvement involves a modification of the collision term and a reconstruction step. Numerical examples confirm the accuracy and efficiency of our techniques.

We study the settling of solid particles in a viscous incompressible fluid contained within a two-dimensional channel, where the mass density of the particles is greater than that of the fluid. The fluid-structure interaction problem is simulated numerically using the immersed boundary method, where the added mass is incorporated using a Boussinesq approximation. Simulations are performed with a single circular particle, and also with two particles in various initial configurations. The terminal particle settling velocity and drag coefficient correspond closely with other theoretical, experimental and numerical results, and the particle trajectories reproduce the expected behavior qualitatively. In particular, simulations of a pair of interacting particles similar drafting-kissing-tumbling dynamics to that observed in other experimental and numerical studies.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are very important due to their role of oxygen transport from lungs. As the malaria parasite grows in the malaria-infected red blood cells (IRBCs), the properties of the cells change. In the present work, the oxygen uptake by RBCs and IRBCs at the pulmonary capillaries is simulated using a numerical technique based on the two-dimensional immersed interface method. The results for the oxygen uptake by a stationary single RBC have fair agreements with the previously reported results. The numerical results show that the malaria infection could significantly cause deterioration on the oxygen uptake by red blood cells. The results also suggest that the oxygen uptake by individual stationary RBC/IRBC would not be significantly affected by the neighboring cells provided the separation distance is about the dimension of the cell. Furthermore, it appears that the oxygen uptake by both RBCs and IRBCs is dominated by mass diffusion over the convection although the Peclet number is of the order of unity.

In this paper, a conservative fifth-order upwind compact scheme using centered stencil is introduced. This scheme uses asymmetric coefficients to achieve the upwind property since the stencil is symmetric. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed scheme is low-dissipative and has a relatively large stability range. To maintain the convergence rate of the whole spatial discretization, a proper non-periodic boundary scheme is also proposed. A detailed analysis shows that the spatial discretization implemented with the boundary scheme proposed by Pirozzoli [J. Comput. Phys., 178 (2001), pp. 81–117] is approximately fourth-order. Furthermore, a hybrid methodology, coupling the compact scheme with WENO scheme, is adopted for problems with discontinuities. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

We have developed a numerical method for simulating viscous flow through a compliant closed tube, driven by a pair of fluid source and sink. As is natural for tubular flow simulations, the problem is formulated in axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates, with fluid flow described by the Navier-Stokes equations. Because the tubular walls are assumed to be elastic, when stretched or compressed they exert forces on the fluid. Since these forces are singularly supported along the boundaries, the fluid velocity and pressure fields become unsmooth. To accurately compute the solution, we use the velocity decomposition approach, according to which pressure and velocity are decomposed into a singular part and a remainder part. The singular part satisfies the Stokes equations with singular boundary forces. Because the Stokes solution is unsmooth, it is computed to second-order accuracy using the immersed interface method, which incorporates known jump discontinuities in the solution and derivatives into the finite difference stencils. The remainder part, which satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations with a continuous body force, is regular. The equations describing the remainder part are discretized in time using the semi-Lagrangian approach, and then solved using a pressure-free projection method. Numerical results indicate that the computed overall solution is second-order accurate in space, and the velocity is second-order accurate in time.

We develop the immersed interface method (IIM) to simulate a two-fluid flow of two immiscible fluids with different density and viscosity. Due to the surface tension and the discontinuous fluid properties, the two-fluid flow has nonsmooth velocity and discontinuous pressure across the moving sharp interface separating the two fluids. The IIM computes the flow on a fixed Cartesian grid by incorporating into numerical schemes the necessary jump conditions induced by the interface. We present how to compute these necessary jump conditions from the analytical principal jump conditions derived in [Xu, DCDS, Supplement 2009, pp. 838-845]. We test our method on some canonical two-fluid flows. The results demonstrate that the method can handle large density and viscosity ratios, is second-order accurate in the infinity norm, and conserves mass inside a closed interface.

This paper presents a method for solving the linear semi-implicit immersed boundary equations which avoids the severe time step restriction presented by explicit-time methods. The Lagrangian variables are eliminated via a Schur complement to form a purely Eulerian saddle point system, which is preconditioned by a projection operator and then solved by a Krylov subspace method. From the viewpoint of projection methods, we derive an ideal preconditioner for the saddle point problem and compare the efficiency of a number of simpler preconditioners that approximate this perfect one. For low Reynolds number and high stiffness, one particular projection preconditioner yields an efficiency improvement of the explicit IB method by a factor around thirty. Substantial speed-ups over explicit-time method are achieved for Reynolds number below 100. This speedup increases as the Eulerian grid size and/or the Reynolds number are further reduced.

This paper is devoted to a new high-accuracy finite difference scheme for solving reaction-convection-diffusion problems with a small diffusivity ε. With a novel treatment for the reaction term, we first derive a difference scheme of accuracy O(εh2+εh2+h3) for the 1-D case. Using the alternating direction technique, we then extend the scheme to the 2-D case on a nine-point stencil. We apply the high-accuracy finite difference scheme to solve the 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the stream function-vorticity formulation. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed difference scheme. Comparisons made with some high-order compact difference schemes show that the newly proposed scheme can achieve good accuracy with a better stability.

In this paper, we study an adsorption model arising in the dynamics of several surfactants at the air-water interface, where the Langmuir isotherm is employed for modelling the time-dependent surface concentration, providing a nonlinear dynamical boundary condition. Existence of a weak solution is proved by using the Rothe method for a semi-discrete problem in time. After obtaining some a priori estimates and passing to the limit in the time discretization parameter, we conclude that the original Langmuir problem has a bounded solution. An uniqueness result is also given.

Analyses were performed on the dispersion overshoot and inverse dissipation of the high-order finite difference scheme using Fourier and precision analysis. Schemes under discussion included the pointwise- and staggered-grid type, and were presented in weighted form using candidate schemes with third-order accuracy and three-point stencil. All of these were commonly used in the construction of difference schemes. Criteria for the dispersion overshoot were presented and their critical states were discussed. Two kinds of instabilities were studied due to inverse dissipation, especially those that occur at lower wave numbers. Criteria for the occurrence were presented and the relationship of the two instabilities was discussed. Comparisons were made between the analytical results and the dispersion/dissipation relations by Fourier transformation of typical schemes. As an example, an application of the criteria was given for the remedy of inverse dissipation in Weirs & Martín’s third-order scheme.

Many problems in biology involve gels which are mixtures composed of a polymer network permeated by a fluid solvent (water). The two-fluid model is a widely used approach to described gel mechanics, in which both network and solvent coexist at each point of space and their relative abundance is described by their volume fractions. Each phase is modeled as a continuum with its own velocity and constitutive law. In some biological applications, free boundaries separate regions of gel and regions of pure solvent, resulting in a degenerate network momentum equation where the network volume fraction vanishes. To overcome this difficulty, we develop a regularization method to solve the two-phase gel equations when the volume fraction of one phase goes to zero in part of the computational domain. A small and constant network volume fraction is temporarily added throughout the domain in setting up the discrete linear equations and the same set of equation is solved everywhere. These equations are very poorly conditioned for small values of the regularization parameter, but the multigrid-preconditioned GMRES method we use to solve them is efficient and produces an accurate solution of these equations for the full range of relevant regularization parameter values.

We present a hybrid numerical method for simulating fluid flow through a compliant, closed tube, driven by an internal source and sink. Fluid is assumed to be highly viscous with its motion described by Stokes flow. Model geometry is assumed to be axisymmetric, and the governing equations are implemented in axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates, which capture 3D flow dynamics with only 2D computations. We solve the model equations using a hybrid approach: we decompose the pressure and velocity fields into parts due to the surface forcings and due to the source and sink, with each part handled separately by means of an appropriate method. Because the singularly-supported surface forcings yield an unsmooth solution, that part of the solution is computed using the immersed interface method. Jump conditions are derived for the axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates. The velocity due to the source and sink is calculated along the tubular surface using boundary integrals. Numerical results are presented that indicate second-order accuracy of the method.

Hemodynamics is a complex problem with several distinct characteristics; fluid is non-Newtonian, flow is pulsatile in nature, flow is three-dimensional due to cholesterol/plague built up, and blood vessel wall is elastic. In order to simulate this type of flows accurately, any proposed numerical scheme has to be able to replicate these characteristics correctly, efficiently, as well as individually and collectively. Since the equations of the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM) are hyperbolic, and can be solved using Cartesian grids locally, explicitly and efficiently on parallel computers, a program of study to develop a viable FDLBM numerical scheme that can mimic these characteristics individually in any model blood flow problem was initiated. The present objective is to first develop a steady FDLBM with an immersed boundary (IB) method to model blood flow in stenoic artery over a range of Reynolds numbers. The resulting equations in the FDLBM/IB numerical scheme can still be solved using Cartesian grids; thus, changing complex artery geometry can be treated without resorting to grid generation. The FDLBM/IB numerical scheme is validated against known data and is then used to study Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid flow through constricted tubes. The investigation aims to gain insight into the constricted flow behavior and the non-Newtonian fluid effect on this behavior.
