We use the MIDE3700 code to find effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log g) via the Barbier Chalonge Divan (BCD) method for 222 B-type stars in the ESO archive in preparation for their inclusion as an extension to the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL). We find agreement of Δ log Teff ∼0.1σ and Δ log g ∼0.25σ of our results with a sample of literature stars. We populate a previously bare region of the XSL Kiel diagram in the ranges 9000 ≤ Teff ≤ 23000 K and 2.8 ≤ log g ≤ 4.0 dex, and thereby extend the lower age limit of XSL stellar population models by up to a factor ∼10 at [Fe/H] = −1.2 dex, and by a factor ∼2 at Solar metallicity.

Rest-frame far-ultraviolet spectra are fundamental to our understanding of star-forming galaxies, providing a unique window on massive star populations (MSs), chemical evolution, feedback processes, and reionization. JWST is ushering in a new era, pushing the FUV frontier beyond z=10. The success of such endeavors hinges on a comprehensive understanding of the MSs and gas conditions that power the observed spectra. The COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) is a powerful and promising solution providing high-quality, high-resolution FUV spectra of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies. The spectra contain a suite of features that simultaneously characterize the MSs that populate metal-poor galaxies, physical properties of large-scale outflows, and chemical abundance patterns. The CLASSY sample is consistent with the z 0 mass-metallicity relationship and spans 1.5 dex in metallicity. These unique properties make CLASSY the benchmark training set for studies of MSs in star-forming galaxies both across cosmic time and connecting metal-poor to metal-rich populations.

The Virtual Observatory (VO) is an international astronomical community-based initiative. VO aims to allow global electronic access to the available astronomical data archives of space and ground-based observatories and other sky survey databases. VO for education is a project developed within the framework of the European Virtual Observatory (EuroVO) with the aim of diffusing VO data and software to the public, in particular students, teachers and astronomy enthusiasts. VO for education offers use cases, pedagogical units, and simplified professional software that will allow a taste of the emotion of scientific research even to those approaching astronomy for the first time or simply wishing to wander between stars.

The Spacewatch Project uses four telescopes of apertures 0.9-m, 1.8-m, 2.3-m, and 4-m on Kitt Peak mountain in Arizona for followup astrometry of priority NEOs. Objects as faint as V=23 on the MPC's NEO Confirmation Page, targets of radar, potential impactors, targets of spacecraft observations or visits, and PHAs with future close approaches to Earth receive priority for astrometry.

We present our approach of visibility modeling of disks around low-mass (< 2 M⊙) young stellar objects (YSOs). We compiled an atlas based on mid-infrared interferometric observations from the MIDI instrument at the VLTI. We use three different models to fit the data. These models allow us to determine overall sizes (and the extent of the inner gaps) of the modeled circumstellar disks.

In a quest to further our understanding of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) as well as the unidentified carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), we are mapping DIBs across the sky using hundreds of hot stars as background torches – globular clusters (in particular ω Centauri), nearby stars in and around the Local Bubble, and stars within the Magellanic Clouds. I describe the results so far obtained and our current experiments.

An all-sky comprehensive catalogue of calculated radio and X-ray associations to optical objects is presented. Included are X-ray sources from XMM-Newton, Chandra and ROSAT catalogues, radio sources from NVSS, FIRST and SUMSS catalogues, and optical data, identifications and redshifts from the APM, USNO-A, SDSS-DR7 and the extant literature. This ‘Atlas of Radio/X-ray Associations’ inherits many techniques from the predecessor Quasars.org (2004) catalogue, but object selection is changed and processing tweaked. Optical objects presented are those which are calculated with ≥40% confidence to be associated with radio/X-ray detections, totalling 602 570 objects in all, including 23 681 double radio lobe detections. For each of these optical objects I display the calculated percentage probabilities of its being a QSO, galaxy, star, or erroneous radio/X-ray association, plus any identification from the literature. The catalogue includes 105 568 uninvestigated objects listed as 40% to >99% likely to be a QSO. The catalogue is available at http://quasars.org/arxa.htm.

A visualization of 3D structures and cosmic flows is presented using information from the Extragalactic Distance Database V8k redshift catalog and peculiar velocities from the Cosmicflows-1 survey. Structures within a volume bounded at 8000 km s−1 on the cardinal Supergalactic axes are explored in terms of both displaying the positions of the 30,124 galaxies of the catalog and its reconstructed luminosity density field, corrected to account for growing incompleteness with increasing distance. Cosmography of the local Universe is discussed with the intent to identify the most prominent structures, including voids, galaxy clusters, filaments, and walls. The mapping also benefits from precise distance measures provided through the Cosmicflows-1 observational program. Three-dimensional visualizations of the coherent flows of galaxies in the nearby Universe are presented, using recent results based on reconstruction of cosmic flows with the Wiener filter approach. The three major components of the Milky Way's motion, namely expulsion from the Local Void, infall toward the Virgo Cluster, and the bulk flow of the historic Local Supercluster toward the Great Attractor are illustrated using different visualization techniques and analyzed in light of the cosmography derived from the V8k redshift and Cosmicflows-1 distance catalogs.

GALEX (the Galaxy Evolution Explorer) has provided far-UV(1344-1786Å) and near-UV(1771-2831Å) imaging of several Planetary Nebulae (e.g., Bianchi et al. 2008, Bianchi 2012), with flux limits ~27.5 mag/sq.arcsec for objects in the Medium-deph Imaging Survey (MIS). PNe images in the GALEX broad-band UV filters include flux from both nebular line and continuum emission. We use the GALEX grism observing mode to obtain slitless spectral imaging of a sample of PNe with diameters >1′, in the near-UV. We show the first data from this program. The grism produces 2D images of the prominent UV nebular emission lines, when such lines dominate the flux. Combined with monochromatic images of diagnostic lines in the optical domain, such data help detect and interpret ionization and shock fronts, especially in faint nebular regions.

The infrared astronomical satellite AKARI performed an all sky survey at six infrared bands. We report here on the calibration of the all-sky image data, observed in the four long wavelength bands with the FIS instrument (AKARI Far-infrared All Sky Survey : AFASS). The preliminary image attains a calibration uncertainty and sensitivity of better than ~ 30% and ~ 10 MJy str−1, respectively, for all four bands. The point spread function (PSF) is obtained via a stacking technique. The data are shown to be useful for exploring the internal structure and dust spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of nearby galaxies.

Galileo's talents in perspective and chiaroscuro drawing led to his images of the Moon being accepted relatively quickly as the naturalistic portrayal of a truly physical place. In contrast to his resolved views of the Moon, Galileo saw the satellites of Jupiter as only points of light (as with stars). He thus used star symbols in Sidereus Nuncius (1610) for the moons, in constrast to an open disk for Jupiter. In this paper, I describe methods used in subsequent decades to portray objects that could not be seen in any detail but whose very existence challenged the scholastic approach to science. Within fifty years, the existence of the moons was such an accepted component of astronomy that they were depicted in the highly decorative “textbook” Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica by Andreas Cellarius (1660). Other symbolic methods, ranging from the routine to the dramatic, were used in subsequent centuries to portray the moons. Actual photographs using ground-based telescopes were not possible until the 20th century, just years before cameras on spaceflight missions captured the true details of the Medicean Stars.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is the most ambitious ground-based survey currently planned in the visible band. Mapping of the Milky Way is one of the four main science and design drivers. The main 20,000 sq.deg. large survey area will be imaged about 1000 times in six bands (ugrizy) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, with the first light expected in 2015. These data will result in databases including 10 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars, and will serve the majority of science programs. In the Milky Way context, these deep LSST data will enable unprecedented studies of distant stars in Galactic halo, as well as intrinsically faint nearby objects, such as white dwarfs and LTY dwarfs.

We summarize recent work on the Milky Way “tomography” with SDSS and use these results to illustrate what further breakthroughs can be expect from Gaia and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). LSST is the most ambitious ground-based survey currently planned in the visible band. Mapping of the Milky Way is one of the four main science and design drivers. The main 20 000 deg2. survey area will be imaged about 1000 times in six bands (ugrizy) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, with the first light expected in 2015. Due to Gaia's superb astrometric and photometric accuracy, and LSST's significantly deeper data, the two surveys are highly complementary: Gaia will map the Milky Way's disk with unprecedented detail, and LSST will extend this map all the way to the halo's edge.

We give a progress report on our work to reduce and calibrate spectra obtained for Hubble's Next Generation Spectral Library (NGSL). We will shortly be working with Bruzual and Charlot to incorporate these spectra into their stellar population synthesis code.

We present a summary of the major contributions to the Special Session on Astronomical Data Management held at the IAU XXVI General Assembly in Prague in 2006. While recent years have seen enormous improvements in access to astronomical data, and the Virtual Observatory aims to provide astronomers with seamless access to on-line resources, more attention needs to be paid to ensuring the quality and completeness of those resources. For example, data produced by telescopes are not always made available to the astronomical community, and new instruments are sometimes designed and built with insufficient planning for data management, while older but valuable legacy data often remain undigitised. Data and results published in journals do not always appear in the data centres, and astronomers in developing countries sometimes have inadequate access to on-line resources. To address these issues, an ‘Astronomers' Data Manifesto’ has been formulated with the aim of initiating a discussion that will lead to the development of a ‘code of best practice’ in astronomical data management.

The triennial report of Commission V Documentation and Astronomical Data/Documentation et Données Astronomiques covers 2002–2005 activities, and in particular the activities of the five Working Groups: Working Group Astronomical Data; Working Group Designations; Working Group Libraries; Working Group FITS; Working Group Virtual Observatories; and of Task Force for the Preservation and Digitization of Photographic Plates.
