This paper examines the preservation of several aging classes of lifetime distributions in the formation of coherent and mixed systems with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) or identically distributed (i.d.) component lifetimes. The increasing mean inactivity time class and the decreasing mean time to failure class are developed for the lifetime of systems with possibly dependent and i.d. component lifetimes. The increasing likelihood ratio property is also discussed for the lifetime of a coherent system with i.i.d. component lifetimes. We present sufficient conditions satisfied by the signature of a coherent system with i.i.d. components with exponential distribution, under which the decreasing mean remaining lifetime, the increasing mean inactivity time, and the decreasing mean time to failure are all satisfied by the lifetime of the system. Illustrative examples are presented to support the established results.

Let $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ be mutually independent exponential random variables with distinct hazard rates $\lambda _1, \ldots, \lambda _n$ and let $Y_1, \ldots, Y_n$ be a random sample from the exponential distribution with hazard rate $\bar \lambda = \sum _{i=1}^{n} \lambda _i/n$. Also let $X_{1:n} \lt \cdots \lt X_{n:n}$ and $Y_{1:n} \lt \cdots \lt Y_{n:n}$ be their associated order statistics. It is proved that for $1\le i \lt j \le n$, the generalized spacing $X_{j:n} - X_{i:n}$ is more dispersed than $Y_{j:n} - Y_{i:n}$ according to dispersive ordering and for $2\le i \le n$, the dependence of $X_{i:n}$ on $X_{1:n}$ is less than that of $Y_{i:n}$ on $Y_{1 :n}$, in the sense of the more stochastically increasing ordering. This dependence result is also extended to the proportional hazard rates (PHR) model. This extends the earlier work of Genest et al. [(2009)]. On the range of heterogeneous samples. Journal of Multivariate Analysis 100: 1587–1592] who proved this result for $i =n$.

For independent exponentially distributed random variables $X_i$ , $i\in {\mathcal{N}}$ , with distinct rates ${\lambda}_i$ we consider sums $\sum_{i\in\mathcal{A}} X_i$ for $\mathcal{A}\subseteq {\mathcal{N}}$ which follow generalized exponential mixture distributions. We provide novel explicit results on the conditional distribution of the total sum $\sum_{i\in {\mathcal{N}}}X_i$ given that a subset sum $\sum_{j\in \mathcal{A}}X_j$ exceeds a certain threshold value $t>0$ , and vice versa. Moreover, we investigate the characteristic tail behavior of these conditional distributions for $t\to\infty$ . Finally, we illustrate how our probabilistic results can be applied in practice by providing examples from both reliability theory and risk management.

Branching processes $(Z_n)_{n \ge 0}$ in a varying environment generalize the Galton–Watson process, in that they allow time dependence of the offspring distribution. Our main results concern general criteria for almost sure extinction, square integrability of the martingale $(Z_n/\mathrm E[Z_n])_{n \ge 0}$, properties of the martingale limit W and a Yaglom-type result stating convergence to an exponential limit distribution of the suitably normalized population size $Z_n$, conditioned on the event $Z_n \gt 0$. The theorems generalize/unify diverse results from the literature and lead to a classification of the processes.

We show that the kth order statistic from a heterogeneous sample of n ≥ k exponential random variables is larger than that from a homogeneous exponential sample in the sense of star ordering, as conjectured by Xu and Balakrishnan [14]. As a consequence, we establish hazard rate ordering for order statistics between heterogeneous and homogeneous exponential samples, resolving an open problem of Pǎltǎnea [11]. Extensions to general spacings are also presented.

This paper considers simple step-stress accelerated life tests (SSALTs) for one-shot devices. The one-shot device is an item that cannot be used again after the test, for instance, munitions, rockets, and automobile air-bags. Either left-or right-censored data are collected instead of actual lifetimes of the devices under test. An expectation-maximization algorithm is developed here to find the maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters based on one-shot device testing data collected from simple SSALTs. Furthermore, the asymptotic variance of the mean lifetime under normal operating conditions is determined under the expectation-maximization framework. On the other hand, the optimal design that minimizes the asymptotic variance of the estimate of the mean lifetime under normal operating conditions in terms of three decision variables, including stress levels, inspection times, and sample allocation is discussed. A procedure then is presented to determine the decision variables when a range of stress levels and the termination time of the test as well as normal operating conditions of the devices are given. The properties of the optimal design and the effects of errors in pre-specified planning values of the model parameters are also investigated. Comprehensive simulation studies show that the procedure is quite reliable for the design of simple SSALTs.

Log-concave random variables and their various properties play an increasingly important role in probability, statistics, and other fields. For a distribution F, denote by 𝒟F the set of distributions G such that the convolution of F and G has a log-concave probability mass function or probability density function. In this paper, we investigate sufficient and necessary conditions under which 𝒟F ⊆ 𝒟G, where F and G belong to a parametric family of distributions. Both discrete and continuous settings are considered.

Consider a generic data unit of random size L that needs to be transmitted over a channel of unit capacity. The channel availability dynamic is modeled as an independent and identically distributed sequence {A, Ai}i≥1 that is independent of L. During each period of time that the channel becomes available, say Ai, we attempt to transmit the data unit. If L <Ai, the transmission is considered successful; otherwise, we wait for the next available period Ai+1 and attempt to retransmit the data from the beginning. We investigate the asymptotic properties of the number of retransmissions N and the total transmission time T until the data is successfully transmitted. In the context of studying the completion times in systems with failures where jobs restart from the beginning, it was first recognized by Fiorini, Sheahan and Lipsky (2005) and Sheahan, Lipsky, Fiorini and Asmussen (2006) that this model results in power-law and, in general, heavy-tailed delays. The main objective of this paper is to uncover the detailed structure of this class of heavy-tailed distributions induced by retransmissions. More precisely, we study how the functional relationship ℙ[L>x]-1 ≈ Φ (ℙ[A>x]-1) impacts the distributions of N and T; the approximation ‘≈’ will be appropriately defined in the paper based on the context. Depending on the growth rate of Φ(·), we discover several criticality points that separate classes of different functional behaviors of the distribution of N. For example, we show that if log(Φ(n)) is slowly varying then log(1/ℙ[N>n]) is essentially slowly varying as well. Interestingly, if log(Φ(n)) grows slower than e√(logn) then we have the asymptotic equivalence log(ℙ[N>n]) ≈ - log(Φ(n)). However, if log(Φ(n)) grows faster than e√(logn), this asymptotic equivalence does not hold and admits a different functional form. Similarly, different types of distributional behavior are shown for moderately heavy tails (Weibull distributions) where log(ℙ[N>n]) ≈ -(log Φ(n))1/(β+1), assuming that log Φ(n) ≈ nβ, as well as the nearly exponential ones of the form log(ℙ[N>n]) ≈ -n/(log n)1/γ, γ>0, when Φ(·) grows faster than two exponential scales log log (Φ(n)) ≈ nγ.

In this paper we study the distribution of the location, at time t, of a particle moving U time units upwards, V time units downwards, and W time units of no movement (idle). These are repeated cyclically, according to independent alternating renewals. The distributions of U, V, and W are absolutely continuous. The velocities are v = +1 upwards, v = -1 downwards, and v = 0 during idle periods. Let Y+(t), Y−(t), and Y0(t) denote the total time in (0, t) of movements upwards, downwards, and no movements, respectively. The exact distribution of Y+(t) is derived. We also obtain the probability law of X(t) = Y+(t) - Y−(t), which describes the particle's location at time t. Explicit formulae are derived for the cases of exponential distributions with equal rates, with different rates, and with linear rates (leading to damped processes).

Kochar and Xu (2009) proved that a parallel system with heterogeneous exponential component lifetimes is more skewed (according to the convex transform order) than the system with independent and identically distributed exponential components. In this paper we extend this study to the general k-out-of-n systems for the case when there are only two types of component in the system. An open problem proposed in Pǎltǎnea (2008) is partially solved.

A parallel system with heterogeneous exponential component lifetimes is shown to be more skewed (according to the convex transform order) than the system with independent and identically distributed exponential components. As a consequence, equivalent conditions for comparing the variabilities of the largest order statistics from heterogeneous and homogeneous exponential samples in the sense of the dispersive order and the right-spread order are established. A sufficient condition is also given for the proportional hazard rate model.

We make a correction to an important result by Cline [D. B. H. Cline, ‘Convolutions of distributions with exponential tails’, J. Austral. Math. Soc. (Series A)43 (1987), 347–365; D. B. H. Cline, ‘Convolutions of distributions with exponential tails: corrigendum’, J. Austral. Math. Soc. (Series A)48 (1990), 152–153] on the closure of the exponential class under convolution power mixtures (random summation).

We generalize a theorem due to Keilson on the approximate exponentiality of waiting times for rare events in regenerative processes. We use the result to investigate the limit distribution for a family of first entrance times in a sequence of Ehrenfest urn models. As a second application, we consider approximate pattern matching, a problem arising in molecular biology and other areas.

Let F be a probability distribution function with density f. We assume that (a) F has finite moments of any integer positive order and (b) the classical problem of moments for F has a nonunique solution (F is M-indeterminate). Our goal is to describe a , where h is a ‘small' perturbation function. Such a class S consists of different distributions Fε (fε is the density of Fε) all sharing the same moments as those of F, thus illustrating the nonuniqueness of F, and of any Fε, in terms of the moments. Power transformations of distributions such as the normal, log-normal and exponential are considered and for them Stieltjes classes written explicitly. We define a characteristic of S called an index of dissimilarity and calculate its value in some cases. A new Stieltjes class involving a power of the normal distribution is presented. An open question about the inverse Gaussian distribution is formulated. Related topics are briefly discussed.

We generalize Banach's matchbox problem: demands of random size are made on one of two containers, both initially with content t, where the container is selected at random in the successive steps. Let Zt be the content of the other container at the moment when the selected container is found to be insufficient. We obtain the asymptotic distribution of Zt as t → ∞ under quite general conditions. The case of exponentially distributed demands is considered in more detail.

It is shown that Xn:n is greater than Yn:n according to dispersive as well as hazard rate orderings. These results lead to a lower bound for the variance of Xn:n and an upper bound on the hazard rate function of Xn:n in terms of . These bounds are sharper than those obtained by Dykstra et al. ((1997), J. Statist. Plann. Inference65, 203–211), which are in terms of the arithmetic mean of the λis. Furthermore, let X1*,…,Xn∗ be another set of independent exponential random variables with Xi∗ having hazard rate λi∗, i = 1,…,n. It is proved that if (logλ1,…,logλn) weakly majorizes (logλ1∗,…,logλn∗, then Xn:n is stochastically greater than Xn:n∗.

The characterization of the exponential distribution via the coefficient of the variation of the blocking time in a queueing system with an unreliable server, as given by Lin (1993), is improved by substantially weakening the conditions. Based on the coefficient of variation of certain random variables, including the blocking time, the normal service time and the minimum of the normal service and the server failure times, two new characterizations of the exponential distribution are obtained.

We present general criteria for analyzing the crossing characteristics of RI, the reliability function of an m-of-n system of components operating within a laboratory (or test-bench) environment, and RO, the reliability function of the same system now operating subject to an external environment. Inside the laboratory the components' lifetimes may be dependently distributed, and the external environment is modeled using the general approach of Lindley and Singpurwalla (1986). Our techniques, which utilize results basic to the theory of order statistics, apply to broad classes of external environment models.

We compare R1(t), the reliability function of a redundant m-of-n system operating within the laboratory, with RD(t), the reliability function of the same system operating subject to environmental effects. Within the laboratory, all component lifetimes are independent and identically distributed according to G(α + 1, λ), a gamma distribution with index α + 1 and scale λ. Outside the laboratory, we adopt the model of Lindley and Singpurwalla (J. Appl. Prob. 23 (1986), 418-431) and assume that, conditional on a positive random variable η which models the effect of the common environment, all component lifetimes are independent and identically distributed according to G(α + 1, λη). When α is a non-negative integer we prove that for RD(t) to underestimate (resp. overestimate) R1(t) for all t sufficiently close to zero, it is necessary and sufficient that E(η(n-m + 1)(α+1)) > 1 (resp. E(η(n-m + 1)(α+1)) < 1). In the case in which n = 2, m= 1 and α = 0 we obtain a special case of a result of Currit and Singpurwalla (J. Appl. Prob. 26 (1988), 763-771). As an application, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition under which RD(t) initially understimates (or overestimates) R1(t) when η follows a gamma or an inverse Gaussian distribution.
