A field experiment was conducted over a 2-yr period to determine the effects of reduced PRE herbicide rates on large crabgrass infestation in six tall fescue cultivars. With the exception of oryzalin and benefin plus oryzalin in 1993, there was no cultivar by herbicide interaction for large crabgrass infestation when final ratings were made in 1993 and 1994. This interaction was caused by moderate to severe turfgrass injury that thinned the turf. When cultivars were disregarded, prodiamine was the only herbicide applied at one-third recommended rate in 1993 that effectively suppressed large crabgrass for the full season. Prodiamine and dithiopyr were the only PRE herbicides applied at one-third recommended rates for two consecutive years that effectively suppressed large crabgrass in 1994. Two-thirds recommended rate was needed for two consecutive years for oxadiazon, pendimethalin, oryzalin, benefin plus oryzalin, and benefin plus trifluralin to maintain optimum large crabgrass suppression in 1994.

An experiment was conducted to determine the interval needed between dithiopyr formulation (EC and G) treatments and seeding of tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and creeping bentgrass. The cover of tall fescue 10 wk after seeding was not reduced when the EC formulation was applied at ≤ 0.84 kg ha−1 ≥ 2 wk before seeding. Dithiopyr G at 0.56 kg ha−1 did not reduce tall fescue cover when applied at ≥ 8 wk before seeding; whereas, 0.84 kg ha−1 required a 12-wk interval between treatment and seeding in one of two years. Perennial ryegrass cover 10 wk after seeding was not reduced with dithiopyr at 0.56 kg ha−1 applied from 2 to 12 wk before seeding. When the dithiopyr G was applied at 0.56 kg ha−1, an 8-wk interval before seeding was needed to prevent a reduction in turf cover. When rates of EC and G dithiopyr were increased to 0.84 kg ha−1 an 8-wk interval was needed for the EC and a 12-wk interval was needed for the G formulation to prevent a reduction in cover in one of two years. Creeping bentgrass cover was not reduced when dithiopyr EC was applied at 0.56 kg ha−1 ≥ 8 wk before seeding. When the EC rate was increased to 0.84 kg ha−1 a 12-wk interval was needed between treatment and seeding in one of two years. When dithiopyr G was applied within 12 wk of seeding creeping bentgrass, the cover was reduced to an unacceptable level regardless of application rate.

Field experiments were established to evaluate the effect of herbicide treatments on control of tall fescue before spring or fall no-till alfalfa planting and to determine the effect of fescue control on alfalfa seedling establishment, forage yield, and forage quality. No treatment provided significantly greater tall fescue control than the standard two applications of paraquat at 13- to 21-day intervals. Fescue control values with this treatment ranged from 86 to 99% over experiments and were associated with maximum values for alfalfa ground-cover and alfalfa yield percentage parameters, 52 to 83% and 64 to 96%, respectively. Glyphosate and SC-0224 at 2.2 kg/ha and greater generally gave tall fescue control equivalent to the paraquat treatment in both spring and fall seedings as did sethoxydim at 0.6 kg/ha in spring seedings. Applications of fluazifop or HOE-0661 did not result in satisfactory tall fescue control or alfalfa establishment. Adding nonionic surfactant to glyphosate or SC-0224 did not increase tall fescue control. There was a direct linear relationship between tall fescue control and both alfalfa seedling establishment and yield percentage.

Dithiopyr and prodiamine are new preemergence herbicides for crabgrass control in tall fescue and bermudagrass turf. A field experiment was conducted over a 2-yr period to determine the lowest rates of dithiopyr and prodiamine needed to control large crabgrass effectively in tall fescue and common bermudagrass. Prodiamine applied at 0.17 kg ai/ha in each of two applications controlled 92 to 93% of large crabgrass by late August in common bermudagrass and 78 to 85% in tall fescue. Dithiopyr applied at 0.11 kg ai/ha in each of two applications controlled 85 to 89% of large crabgrass in common bermudagrass, but the control was not consistent across years at any rate in tall fescue. Dithiopyr applied at 0.56 kg/ha on tall fescue controlled 91% of large crabgrass in 1993, but only 38% in 1994. The higher control with dithiopyr in common bermudagrass was due to greater competition with germinating large crabgrass seeds and emerging seedlings during the summer, compared with little or no competition from tall fescue. The quality of tall fescue and common bermudagrass treated with dithiopyr and prodiamine was generally higher in plots where large crabgrass was effectively controlled than in plots with poor control. In general, dithiopyr did not control large crabgrass as effectively in tall fescue as in common bermudagrass, while the control with prodiamine was similar for the two turfgrass species.

In greenhouse studies, the calculated I50 (herbicide application resulting in 50% inhibition of shoot regrowth) in tall fescue was approximately 0.004 kg/ha for both sethoxydim and haloxyfop. In red fescue, the I50 for sethoxydim and haloxyfop was 9.4 kg/ha and 0.04 kg/ha, respectively. As measured in crude cell extracts of tall fescue, incorporation of 14C-acetyl-coenzyme A into fatty acids was inhibited 62 and 71% by 10 μM sethoxydim and 10 μM haloxyfop, respectively. In red fescue, 10 μM haloxyfop inhibited 14C-acetyl-CoA incorporation into fatty acids by 29%, whereas 10 μM sethoxydim had no effect. The I50 for inhibition of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase activity in tall fescue with sethoxydim and haloxyfop was 6.9 and 5.8 μM, respectively. In red fescue the I50 for haloxyfop was 118 μM. Sethoxydim concentrations as high as 1 mM had little effect on acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase activity in red fescue. These results suggest that acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase is a sensitive site of action for sethoxydim and haloxyfop in tall fescue, and that tolerance to these herbicides in red fescue is due to the presence of a more tolerant form of the enzyme.

Experiments were conducted over a 3-yr period to determine the rate and frequency of herbicide application needed to control common bermudagrass growing in a tall fescue turf. In Experiment I, fenoxaprop plus ethofumesate applied at 0.2 + 1.7 kg/ha in late April and repeated at the same rate at 3- to 4-wk intervals for a total of five applications resulted in excellent (≥ 97%) common bermudagrass suppression. The suppression was higher from combination of fenoxaprop and ethofumesate than when fenoxaprop was applied at 0.2 kg/ha in five applications (≤ 67%). In Experiment II, fenoxaprop plus ethofumesate applied at 0.2 +1.7 kg/ha required four applications per year to effectively suppress common bermudagrass (95%) in 1993, but five applications were needed to obtain similar suppression (96%) in 1994. Tifway bermudagrass was not suppressed during 1994 when fenoxaprop plus ethofumesate were applied at 0.2 +1.7 kg/ha in each of five applications (30%). In most instances, fenoxaprop plus ethofumesate applied at 0.2 +1.7 kg/ha caused only slight to moderate (< 30%) injury to tall fescue for 1 to 2 wk after treatment. When injury occurred, it was temporary as the turf fully recovered within 2 to 3 wk after treatment. An exception occurred in early July 1992 when fenoxaprop plus ethofumesate caused 44% injury to tall fescue after the four applications.

Field experiments were conducted in 1982 through 1986 to evaluate the effect of six postemergence grass herbicides, clethodim, the methyl ester of diclofop, the butyl ester of fluazifop-P, the methyl ester of haloxyfop, the methyl ester of quizalofop, and sethoxydim, on 31 seedling grass species. All herbicides except diclofop controlled most of the species tested. None of the herbicides controlled rattail fescue or red fescue. Only clethodim and haloxyfop controlled annual bluegrass.

Tall fescue vegetative filter strips 0.5 to 4.0 m wide were evaluated for their ability to reduce losses of metolachlor, metribuzin, and runoff (water and sediment) in conventionally tilled soybean. Differences in the parameters studied were significant between filter and no filter strips, regardless of filter strip width. Two days after treatment, metribuzin concentration in runoff from the unfiltered treatment was 231 ng ml−1; filter strips reduced this amount to 119 ng ml−1 or less. Similar trends were observed with metolachlor, with concentrations of 1,009 ng ml−1 from the unfiltered, whereas filter strips of any width reduced this to 523 ng ml−1 or less. Metribuzin loss during the growing season was 41 g ai ha−1, or 9.8% of the amount applied when no filter strip was present. The addition of a filter strip, regardless of width, reduced cumulative metribuzin losses to 11 g ha−1 or less. Similar results were noted with metolachlor. Filter strips, regardless of width, reduced cumulative runoff and sediment loss at least 46 and 83%, respectively.

Mon 4620 at 2.8 kg ai/ha, paclobutrazol plus mefluidide at 1.1 plus 0.4 kg ai/ha, and flurprimidol plus mefluidide at 1.1 plus 0.4 kg ai/ha were applied on four dates to determine their influence on highly maintained tall fescue turf. Seedhead suppression was good to excellent by Mon 4620 applied March 1 or 18 and by paclobutrazol plus mefluidide and flurprimidol plus mefluidide applied anytime from March 1 until April 1. None of the plant growth regulators (PGRs) suppressed seedheads effectively when applied April 15 when the grass was near the end of the rapid growth cycle and just before seedhead emergence. Vegetative growth of mowed tall fescue was suppressed for 8 weeks in 1987 when PGRs were applied March 1 immediately after full green-up. Application dates were not as important in 1988 as in 1987. Tall fescue was injured the least by Mon 4620 applied in March and by flurprimidol plus mefluidide applied on March 18. Paclobutrazol plus mefluidide injured the turf severely regardless of application date.

Five perennial cool-season grasses: Kentucky bluegrass, creeping red fescue, tall fescue, orchardgrass, and perennial ryegrass were treated at the 2- to 3-leaf, 3- to 4-leaf, 4- to 6-leaf, and 6- to 7-leaf growth stages with four rates (0, 0.14, 0.28, and 0.56 kg ai/ha) of the butyl ester of fluazifop. Creeping red fescue was not injured by any rate at any growth stage. Reduction in shoot dry weight increased linearly with increasing fluazifop rate for the remaining four species, except for the 6- to 7-leaf stage in Kentucky bluegrass and the 4- to 6-leaf stage in tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. Significant differences between growth stages within each rate varied with species. In general, tolerance increased at the 4- to 6-leaf and 6- to 7-leaf growth stages.

Preemergence herbicides were applied on February 28 at the recommended and three times the normal rate to determine the tolerance of tall fescue that was seeded in September, October and November of the preceding year. Fall seeding date of tall fescue significantly affected its tolerance to spring-applied preemergence herbicides. Generally, preemergence herbicides at normal rates were safe to apply to September- or October-seeded tall fescue. No herbicide was completely safe to apply to November-seeded tall fescue. The density of November-seeded tall fescue was generally reduced less with benefin, bensulide, dithiopyr, oxadiazon G and WP than with benefin plus oryzalin, oryzalin, or pendimethalin.

Studies were conducted to test if dicamba reduces haloxyfop herbicidal activity and to determine if this interaction by auxin-type herbicides or bentazon was caused by preventing the haloxyfop-induced inhibition of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase). Addition of dicamba at concentrations of 2.17 or 4.34 mM reduced haloxyfop activity on tall fescue shoots. Haloxyfop at 14 to 20 μM inhibited the activity of ACCase in cell-free extracts from tall fescue by nearly 50%. Dicamba did not prevent the inhibitory effect of haloxyfop on ACCase activity in these cell-free enzyme preparations. Dicamba alone at concentrations as high as 3.2 mM had no significant effect on the in vitro activity of the enzyme. Bentazon concentrations up to 10 mM did not prevent haloxyfop inhibition of ACCase activity. Bentazon alone or mixed with haloxyfop significantly inhibited ACCase activity at bentazon concentrations starting at 1 mM with near 40% inhibition at 10 mM. of the numerous possible explanations for the interference of dicamba or bentazon with haloxyfop action, interaction directly at the enzyme level appears to have been eliminated.

Formulations of fenoxaprop enriched in the R(+) isomer, HOE 46360-08H EW (described as an emulsifiable water-based formulation) and HOE 46360-05H EC (emulsifiable concentrate), were compared with the commercial racemate EC for control of roughstalk bluegrass and tolerance of perennial ryegrass and tall fescue grown for seed. The enriched EW and EC formulations were more than twice as active as the racemate per kg total fenoxaprop, despite enrichment to only 92 and 89% R(+) isomer purity, which should have increased activity by 1.84- and 1.78-fold, respectively. Increased activity was evident both as improved weed control and as decreased crop tolerance. Although the 3.69-fold increase in activity of HOE 46360 EW on roughstalk bluegrass relative to the racemate may be partly due to changes in the emulsion, the 3.06-fold increase in activity of HOE 46360 EC suggests that the S(-) isomer somehow interferes wih the activity of the R(+) isomer. Use of 280 g ai ha–1 of the racemate could be replaced with 76 g ha–1 of the EW or 92 g ha–1 of the EC formulation of HOE 46360 for equivalent roughstalk bluegrass control, but with decreased crop tolerance in perennial ryegrass and tall fescue.

The growth of loblolly pine seedlings was reduced by interference from bermudagrass, tall fescue, and broomsedge. The order for treatment influence on pine seedling growth rate measurements was tall fescue > bermudagrass > broomsedge > weed free for the 2-yr study. The increase in height of seedlings for the weed free, broomsedge, bermudagrass, and tall fescue was 4.1, 2.9, 1.9, and 1.1 cm/month, respectively; and the average increase in seedling stem diameter was 1.3, 0.5, 0.4, and 0.2 mm/month, respectively.

Postemergence applications of BAS 9052 OH, {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}, at 0.25 and 0.5 kg ai/ha were made to 27 temperate and 28 tropical species of Gramineae. Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L. ♯3 POAAN) and rattail fescue (Festuca myuros L. ♯ VLPMY) were resistant to these rates of BAS 9052 OH. Five species of fescue and three species of bluegrass received postemergence applications of BAS 9052 OH at rates of 0.1 to 6.4 kg ai/ha. The germination of seeds and the subsequent growth of the seedlings of these species as influenced by various concentrations of BAS 9052 OH were also studied. Meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds. ♯ FESPR), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. ♯ FESAR), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. ♯ POAPR), and rough-stalked meadowgrass (Poa trivialis L. ♯ POATR) were most susceptible; annual bluegrass was somewhat less resistant; hard fescue (Festuca longifolia Thuill) was resistant; red fescue (Festuca rubra L. ♯ FESRU) and rattail fescue were very resistant.

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. ‘Parade’, ‘Adelphi’, ‘Glade’, and ‘Rugby’ # POAPR) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. ‘Kentucky 31’ # FESAR) were treated in field experiments with chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino] carbonyl] benzenesulfonamide}. The objectives of the two experiments were to determine if this herbicide has the potential to be used for selective control of tall fescue in Kentucky bluegrass turf. Chlorsulfuron treatments included single rates of 0, 18, 35, 71, 141, 212, and 282 g ai/ha and split rates, applied 14 days apart, of 18 + 18, 35 + 35, 71 + 71, 141 + 141, and 212 + 212 g/ha. Clipping weights and turfgrass quality ratings were taken in both experiments. Kentucky bluegrass showed a higher tolerance to the chemical, with no decrease in turf quality at the highest single and split application rates in both experiments. However, as the chlorsulfuron rate increased, clipping weight decreased. Tall fescue showed a low tolerance to the chemical and was controlled at single rates of 141 g/ha and split rates of 141 + 141 g/ha and greater. Although the tall fescue recovered from damage at single rates of 71 g/ha and split rates of 71 + 71 g/ha, severe growth inhibition and discoloration of aboveground tissue occurred at the lower rates. Twelve months after the first chlorsulfuron was applied in each experiment, glyphosate [isopropylamine salt of N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] was sprayed over the plots to kill all existing plant material, and Kentucky bluegrass was seeded into the plots 2 weeks later at the rate of 0.75 kg/100 m2. There was no inhibition of bluegrass seed germination at any of the rates of chlorsulfuron.

Preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) herbicides were sequentially applied to tall fescue over a 2-yr period to determine the lowest herbicide rates needed for acceptable large crabgrass control. Prodiamine was the only PRE herbicide that provided full-season large crabgrass control in tall fescue turf. The control was 85% in plots treated at one-third recommended rate (0.3 kg/ha) and 96% at the full rate (0.8 kg/ha). Sequential applications of oxadiazon at one-third recommended rate (1.1 kg/ha) in late February followed by fenoxaprop (0.2 kg/ha) in June controlled 85% large crabgrass in late August. Control was similar in mid-August when pendimethalin, dithiopyr, or oryzalin at one-third recommended rates was followed by fenoxaprop, but was not acceptable (≤ 74%) by late August. In most instances, large crabgrass control was higher when fenoxaprop followed the PRE herbicide application than with MSMA. Reduced herbicide rates may not provide full-season large crabgrass control in other areas with different soil and weather conditions. Tall fescue quality was not affected by prodiamine, dithiopyr, and oxadiazon. In 1996, pendimethalin at 3.3 kg/ha reduced turf quality 16% and oryzalin at 2.2 kg/ha reduced quality by 46%. In 1995, MSMA reduced the quality of tall fescue more (≤ 21%) than fenoxaprop (≤ 10%). When compared to the use of PRE and POST herbicides alone, sequential PRE plus POST herbicide programs did not affect turfgrass quality.

The combined influence of plant competition and defoliation on development of Canada thistle was investigated in a 2-yr field study. Plant competition was induced by seeding tall fescue and crown vetch. Artificial defoliation was used to simulate various levels of leaf removal by insects. Both defoliation and induced competition reduced biomass of Canada thistle but their impact varied with environmental conditions. Defoliation had a greater detrimental influence than induced competition on thistle biomass in a dry year when growth of the plant competitors was suppressed. In a wet year, induced competition was more important in suppressing Canada thistle than defoliation, and moderate levels of defoliation (25%), applied once when the thistles were 12 to 15 cm in diam, stimulated root weight within the top 20 cm of soil. Reduction in thistle biomass increased with level of defoliation and was greatest when defoliation was applied repeatedly at 14-d intervals in the presence of induced competition. Crown vetch showed very little growth in one season and tall fescue was the primary source of competition for the thistles. The results confirm the hypothesis that combined stresses can substantially reduce biomass development of Canada thistle plants.

Several plant growth regulators applied to established sod driveways in an apple orchard suppressed growth of the ground cover sufficiently to eliminate one to three mowings. MH at 4.5 or 6.7 kg ai/ha applied spring and fall reduced the growth of a single species sod cover crop, ‘Kentucky 31’ tall fescue, the year after treatment. MH at both rates also reduced the dandelion population growing in the mixed species orchard sod. Paclobutrazol or EPTC applied in the spring before or during initial grass growth reduced dry matter production in the fescue sod cover crop and the number of mowings compared to the mowed and non-mowed control plots.

Sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} is used to control weedy grasses in red fescue (Festuca rubra L. # FESRU and F. rubra ssp. commutata), an important seed crop in Oregon. The sethoxydim rate required to reduce growth rate of 11 cultivars of red fescue and four cultivars of bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis Sibth. # AGSTE and A. stolonifera L. var. palustris # AGSST), a common contaminant in red fescue fields, by 50% (GR50) was determined in greenhouse and laboratory experiments. Field experiments compared only red fescue cv. ‘Pennlawn’ and bentgrass cv. ‘Penncross'. The GR50 values for Pennlawn red fescue in the field, the greenhouse, and the laboratory were 30 kg ai/ha, 15 kg/ha, and 5300 μM, respectively. Penncross bentgrass was approximately 400, 1400, and 12 900 times more susceptible than Pennlawn red fescue in the field, in the greenhouse, and in laboratory experiments, respectively. Plants were at different growth stages in the different experiments. The xylene and surfactant used as a solvent for the technical grade sethoxydim was as toxic to red fescue without sethoxydim as when sethoxydim was included. Cultivars of red fescue differed in their response to sethoxydim, but cultivars of bentgrass did not. The GR50's of other species tested in the greenhouse were >4 kg/ha for annual bluegrass (Poa annua L. # POAAN), 0.22 kg/ha for tall fescue (F. arundinacea Schreb. # FESAR), 0.37 kg/ha for downy brome (Bromus tectorum L. # BROTE), and 0.017 kg/ha for Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. # LOLMU).
