A large crabgrass population (PW2) that demonstrated resistance to fluazifop-P and sethoxydim was identified in Wisconsin during 1992. Dose-response experiments were conducted in the greenhouse to determine the level of resistance of a PW2 large crabgrass accession to aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP), cyclohexanedione (CHD), and other herbicide chemistries relative to a large crabgrass accession (A310) which was susceptible to APP and CHD herbicides. Based on shoot dry biomass reduction, the PW2 accession was 337- and 59-fold resistant to sethoxydim and fluazifop-P, respectively, relative to the A310 accession. Resistance of the PW2 accession to fenoxaprop, haloxyfop, quizalofop, and diclofop ranged from 18- to 29-fold. The PW2 accession was only 7-fold resistant to clethodim. Both large crabgrass accessions were susceptible to imazethapyr and linuron. These results suggest that APP and CHD herbicides will be ineffective for the management of the PW2 accession. An integrated approach including cultural, mechanical, and alternative chemical methods, should be implemented for the management of the PW2 accession and to prevent additional resistance problems.

Field studies were undertaken in 1992 and 1993 to investigate the control of wild oat and green foxtail in flax with reduced rates of fluazifop-P and clethodim applied as tank-mixtures. Fluazifop-P plus clethodim at 50 + 18 g ai/ha controlled wild oat and green foxtail and was as effective as full rates of either herbicide applied alone. These rates represent a 20% reduction in total amount of active ingredient required to control wild oat and green foxtail. Application of fluazifop-P, and/or clethodim prior to the 3- to 4-leaf stage failed to control late emerging grass weeds. Application of graminicide mixtures at or after the 3- to 4-leaf stage controlled late emerging grass weeds and did not affect flax yield. When applied late, fluazifop-P at 175 g/ha tended to reduce flax yield, although weed control was acceptable and no foliar injury was observed following treatment. The efficacy of graminicide mixtures was reduced by addition of bromoxynil plus MCPA to the spray mix.

Experiments were conducted to determine the productivity, inter-, and intraspecific competitive ability of giant foxtail accessions resistant (PCW1) and susceptible (AC1) to acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors. Under noncompetitive conditions in the field, shoot dry biomass, plant height, and leaf area over time were similar between the PCW1 and AC1 accessions. The instantaneous relative growth rate and instantaneous net assimilation rate did not differ between the accessions; however, the instantaneous leaf area ratio was slightly greater for the AC1 accession than the PCW1 accession. The seed yield was similar between the PCW1 and AC1 accessions. Addition series experiments were conducted in the field to determine the intraspecific competitive ability of the PCW1 and AC1 accessions. Regression surface analysis of reciprocal mean shoot dry biomass and seed yield indicated that the relative competitive ability of the PCW1 and AC1 accessions was similar. Replacement series experiments were conducted in the greenhouse with or without corn to determine the interspecific competitive ability of the accessions. The relative growth rate, shoot dry biomass, and seed yield of the PCW1 and AC1 accessions were greater without than with corn competition. The relative competitive ability of the PCW1 and AC1 accessions was similar with or without corn competition based on shoot dry biomass or seed yield. These results indicated that the intra- and interspecific competitive ability of the PCW1 and AC1 giant foxtail accessions are similar and suggest that resistance to ACCase inhibitors has not reduced the relative fitness of the PCW1 accession.

During the establishment of alfalfa, POST applications of imazethapyr at 50 g/ha, following PPI applications of trifluralin at 1,100 g/ha, consistently provided ≥ 80% control of wild oat, volunteer canola, and shepherd's-purse with no crop injury. POST applications of the same rate of imazethapyr without PPI applications of trifluralin provided similar volunteer canola and shepherd's-purse control, but ≥ 80% wild oat control was achieved only 25% of the time. Imazethapyr, alone or following trifluralin, did not control common groundsel. Broadleaf weed control from imazethapyr at 50 g/ha tank mixed with fluazifop-P at 125 g/ha or sethoxydim at 200 g/ha was not reduced compared to imazethapyr alone. However, the probability of controlling wild oat by ≥ 90% was reduced from 83% to 0 when the same rate of imazethapyr was tank mixed with fluazifop-P, compared to fluazifop-P alone. Tank mixtures of imazethapyr at 50 g/ha and sethoxydim controlled wild oat only slightly less than sethoxydim alone. First cut and total herbage yields, obtained 1 yr after alfalfa establishment, increased where treatments effectively controlled broadleaf weeds and wild oat, compared to check plots. Second cut herbage and seed yields, also obtained 1 yr after alfalfa establishment, were not affected by any of the treatments.

Laboratory experiments with 14C-herbicides were conducted with grain sorghum as an indicator species to determine the effects of imposed moisture stress on absorption, precent recovery, and acropetal and basipetal translocation of the butyl ester of fluazifop, the methyl ester of haloxyfop, the ethyl ester of quizalofop, and sethoxydim. Haloxyfop was the only herbicide where recovery decreased between the 3-and 48-h interval. All plants absorbed more of the herbicide at the 48-h interval than at the 3- or 6-h interval under both stressed and non-stressed conditions. Increased drought stress caused more acropetal movement with fluazifop and sethoxydim and less acropetal movement with quizalofop at the 3-h interval. Basipetal transloation, although different among herbicides, responded similarly to imposed moisture stress, which decreased basipetal translocation approximately 19%.

Field experiments were conducted from 1986 to 1988 at Lacombe and Lethbridge, Alberta and Scott, Saskatchewan to determine growth and yield response of canola to mixtures of ethametsulfuron with specific grass herbicides. Ethametsulfuron did not usually cause canola injury when mixed with sethoxydim. However, ethametsulfuron mixtures with the following grass herbicides listed in decreasing order of injury potential, often caused canola injury and yield loss: haloxyfop > fluazifop > fluazifop-P > quizalofop > quizalofop-P. Canola yield losses were severe in some experiments, ranging from 59% with quizalofop mixtures to 97% with haloxyfop mixtures; in other experiments, the same mixtures did not cause significant yield losses. ‘Tobin,’ a Brassica rapa cultivar, tended to be more susceptible to injury than the B. napus cultivars ‘Pivot’ and ‘Westar.’ Canola injury symptoms were consistent with those expected from sulfonylurea herbicides. Therefore, we suggest that specific grass herbicides differentially impair the ability of canola to metabolize ethametsulfuron to inactive forms.

Foliar activity of the butyl ester of fluazifop on large crabgrass was determined by varying the concentration of a petroleum-based oil concentrate and the carrier volume. Increasing the concentration of petroleum oil or reducing the carrier volume improved large crabgrass control. Under greenhouse conditions, both visible injury and plant dry weight reflected greater control with adjuvant concentrations increasing from 0.62 to 5.0% v/v. Similarly, reducing carrier volumes from 374 to 47 L/ha increased grass control. No significant interaction between carrier volume and adjuvant concentration suggests the effects of these two variables are independent of one another. For both variables, effects were greater with sublethal rates of fluazifop.

A giant foxtail (PCW1) population putatively resistant to fluazifop-P and sethoxydim was identified in a carrot, onion, and corn cropping system in Wisconsin during 1991. Previous, extensive use of fluazifop and fluazifop-P over several years imposed a high level of selection intensity on grass weeds. In a field experiment, fluazifop-P, sethoxydim, and quizalofop at recommended dosages resulted in 58, 53, and 45% plant survival, respectively, within the PCW1 giant foxtail population; no plants survived treatment with clethodim or nicosulfuron, and few plants survived treatment with imazethapyr at recommended dosages. Based on shoot dry biomass reduction in greenhouse experiments, a PCW1 giant foxtail biotype had 16-, > 9-, 4.9-, and 4.2-fold resistance to fluazifop-P, diclofop, quizalofop, and fenoxaprop, respectively, relative to a giant foxtail (AC1) accession that was susceptible to aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP) and cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicides. The PCW1 biotype had 134-fold resistance to sethoxydim and slight and inconsistent resistance to clethodim. The PCW1 biotype and AC1 accession were equally susceptible to imazethapyr, linuron, and oxyfluorfen. Based on plant survival, a PCW1 giant foxtail accession had 25- and > 143-fold resistance to fluazifop-P and sethoxydim, respectively, relative to the AC1 accession. The selection intensity associated with repeated use of fluazifop and fluazifop-P over 5 yr contributed to the cross-resistance of PCW1 giant foxtail to APP and CHD herbicides.

Interactions of fluazifop-P, sethoxydim, clethodim, and quizalofop-P with DPX-PE350 were evaluated. DPX-PE350 at 110 g ae ha−1 reduced control of large crabgrass when mixed with all graminicides and control of broadleaf signalgrass when mixed with fluazifop-P or quizalofop-P. Increasing the rate of graminicide reduced or eliminated antagonism. Applying sethoxydim and DPX-PE350 sequentially eliminated antagonism on large crabgrass. Control of seedling johnsongrass by the graminicides was not reduced by DPX-PE350. DPX-PE350 reduced control of rhizomatous johnsongrass by sethoxydim. Graminicides had no effect on entireleaf morningglory control with DPX-PE350.

A growth cabinet study was conducted to evaluate the effect of temperature on the distribution of several herbicides in quackgrass. Uniformly labeled 14C-sucrose and the radiolabeled herbicides glyphosate, sethoxydim, cloproxydim, the butyl ester of fluazifop, the methyl ester of haloxyfop, and the ethyl ester of quizalofop were applied to quackgrass grown at three day / night temperature regimes (10/5, 20/15, and 30/25 C). Seven days after treatment the plants were harvested, lyophilized, and later sectioned, mapped, and oxidized in preparation for 14C quantification. Quackgrass rhizome growth was more vigorous at 20/15 than 30/25 or 10/5 C. of the herbicides tested, haloxyfop was the most inhibitory to rhizome growth. Temperature increases from 10/5 to 20/15 or from 20/15 to 30/25 C resulted in more translocation to shoots. Increasing temperature had various effects on translocation to rhizomes depending on the chemical applied. At all three temperature regimes, more 14C was recovered from distal than basal buds in plants treated with 14C-sethoxydim. In contrast, at all three temperature regimes, similar amounts of 14C were recovered from the distal and basal buds of plants treated with 14-C-sucrose.

Dose-response experiments were conducted in a greenhouse on a biotype of johnsongrass from Washington County, Mississippi, to determine the level of resistance to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate (AOPP) herbicide fluazifop-P-butyl and the cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicides clethodim and sethoxydim. Both seedling and rhizomatous plants were evaluated. Resistant/susceptible (R/S) ratios were calculated based on GR50 values (the rate required to reduce shoot dry biomass, expressed as a percent of the control, 50%). The GR50 values for the resistant and susceptible seedling plants were 110 and 10 g ai/ha for clethodim, 193 and 34 g ai/ha for fluazifop-P-butyl, and 265 and 48 g ai/ha for sethoxydim, resulting in R/S ratios of 11.0, 5.7, and 5.5, respectively. The GR50 values for the resistant and susceptible rhizomatous plants were 609 and 39 g/ha for clethodim, 657 and 29 g/ha for fluazifop-P-butyl, and 668 and 30 g/ha for sethoxydim, resulting in R/S ratios of 15.6, 22.7, and 22.3, respectively.

Knowledge of optimal combinations of graminicide rate and stage of application could improve the effectiveness and net benefit of commonly used graminicides. A study was conducted at two locations in Saskatchewan, Canada, from 1994 to 1997. Factorial combinations of five graminicides (CGA 184927, fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, ICIA 0604, imazamethabenz, and flamprop-methyl), three graminicide rates (full, two-thirds, and one-third recommended label rate), and three leaf stages of wild oat (Avena fatua; two-, four-, and six-leaf) were compared to determine their effect on wild oat fresh weight, wheat (Triticum aestivum) seed yield, and net return. Wild oat fresh weight increased and wheat seed yield decreased to a greater extent at Saskatoon (median wild oat fresh weight of 56 g/m2) than at Scott (median wild oat fresh weight of 85 g/m2) when graminicide rate was reduced from the recommended label rate. Net return consistently decreased at both locations and among all graminicides when application rate was reduced from two-thirds to one-third of the recommended label rate. Imazamethabenz applied at progressively later growth stages caused greater wild oat fresh weight at both locations and reduced wheat yield and net return. Applying other graminicides at the earliest (two-leaf) stage of wild oat generally resulted in more or similar levels of wild oat fresh weight compared with delayed applications, especially at Saskatoon. With the exception of imazamethabenz, crop yield and net return were unaffected by leaf stage at both locations. The optimal graminicide rate is mostly dependent on the level of wild oat infestation, and the best time to control wild oat is dependent mostly on the particular graminicide.

Field and greenhouse dose-response experiments were conducted to investigate the potential for resistance in a johnsongrass biotype from New Kent County, VA that survived repeated applications of quizalofop and quizalofop-P. During 1996 and 1997, foliar injury (30 to 60%) was initially observed on the johnsongrass at the New Kent field site, but this biotype eventually recovered and survived applications of fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and sethoxydim at twice the recommended field use rates. However, applications of clethodim at twice the recommended field use rates during 1997 provided essentially complete control of the New Kent johnsongrass biotype. In greenhouse dose-response experiments, the amount of quizalofop-P required to inhibit shoot growth by 50% (GR50) was 13.6 g/ha in the New Kent johnsongrass biotype and 0.8 g/ha in the susceptible johnsongrass biotype. In response to sethoxydim, the GR50 for the New Kent biotype was 122.5 g/ha while that of the susceptible biotype was 21.6 g/ha. Additionally, the New Kent biotype was least sensitive to fluazifop-P, which provided a GR50 value of 148.7 g/ha for the New Kent biotype and 5.1 g/ha for the susceptible biotype. As in the field trials, the New Kent biotype was sensitive to clethodim, which provided a GR50 value of 49.8 g/ha and 69.1 g/ha for the susceptible biotype. These values indicate that the New Kent biotype was 17 times more resistant to quizalofop-P, 5.7 times more resistant to sethoxydim, and 29.5 times more resistant to fluazifop-P than the susceptible biotype, and that the New Kent and susceptible johnsongrass biotypes are equally sensitive to clethodim. These GR50 values for the New Kent johnsongrass biotype are inconsistent with the much higher GR50 values most commonly observed in graminicide-resistant weed biotypes, and suggest a mechanism of resistance other than an insensitive ACCase in the New Kent johnsongrass biotype.

Rapid detection methods were developed for discriminating between resistant (R) and susceptible (S) biotypes of Echinochloa colona to either propanil or fenoxaprop-P at all growth stages. In the pregerminated seed assay for fenoxaprop-P, seeds were placed on 1.0% agar containing a range of concentrations of herbicides and kept under humid conditions. For propanil, pregerminated seeds were placed on moist filter paper in the lid of a petri dish and, when one leaf had developed, the lid was inverted for 1 min into propanil solutions at a range of concentrations. For the fenoxaprop-P and propanil test, seedling length and fresh weight were measured after 1 wk. For juvenile plants with four-leaf to one-tiller, shoots and roots were trimmed and placed in 20-ml glass tubes containing 0.2% (wt/v) agar and a range of concentrations of herbicides. Shoot extension and weight were recorded after 7 d. Larger plants with several small tillers were also assayed by this method. Tillers were removed from larger plants and were evaluated as described for juvenile plants. At later growth stages from ear emergence to flowering, excised stem node segments (8 cm) were soaked in water to stimulate rooting. Rooted nodes were placed in 30-ml glass bottles containing 0.2% agar with a range of concentrations of herbicides, and the test was conducted as described for juvenile plants but with the final assessment of new shoot extension and weight being recorded after 10 d. Discrimination between R and S biotypes was possible on the basis of GR50 values for shoot length and fresh weight in all testing methods. With few exceptions, GR50 values for the length of new shoot were very similar to those for the new shoot fresh weight. We concluded that all testing methods in our study provided reliable and quick discrimination between biotypes for both propanil and fenoxaprop-P susceptibility, covering various growth stages from seed to flowering stage. Trimming plants before herbicide treatment gives a rapid method of discrimination by measuring not only newly grown shoot fresh weight but also shoot length.

Volunteer corn in soybean can reduce yields, interfere with harvest, and cause unacceptable levels of contamination by its presence in the harvested soybean. In Ontario, soybean frequently follow corn in rotation. The use of glyphosate-resistant corn and soybean varieties has increased dramatically in Ontario. Field studies were conducted at two locations in southwestern Ontario to determine whether quizalofop-p-ethyl, clethodim, and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl can be tank mixed with glyphosate to provide effective control of volunteer glyphosate-resistant corn in glyphosate-resistant soybean. Soybean plots were overseeded with glyphosate-resistant corn and treatments consisting of glyphosate applied alone and tank mixed with full and reduced rates of each graminicide with and without a recommended surfactant. Tank mixing the graminicides and adjuvants with glyphosate did not affect glyphosate weed control or crop tolerance. Use of a recommended adjuvant significantly improved the effectiveness of the graminicides, particularly when reduced rates were applied. Quizalofop-p-ethyl was the most effective graminicide for controlling glyphosate-resistant volunteer corn, followed by clethodim and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl.

Echinochloa oryzoides and E. phyllopogon have become the most serious weeds in California Oryza sativa since continuous flooding was used to suppress E. crus-galli. Continuous use of a limited number of available graminicides and an increasing number of control failures led to the investigation of herbicide resistance in E. oryzoides and E. phyllopogon. Greenhouse dose-response studies with postemergence (POST) applications of molinate, thiobencarb, fenoxaprop-ethyl, and bispyribac-sodium estimating GR50 (herbicide dose to inhibit growth by 50%) values suggested resistance to all herbicides in two E. phyllopogon accessions and to molinate and thiobencarb in one E. oryzoides accession when compared with susceptible E. phyllopogon and E. oryzoides controls, respectively. No resistance was detected in dose-response studies with propanil. Minimum and maximum ratios (R/S) of the GR50 values of resistant to susceptible E. phyllopogon plants (in two experiments involving two resistant accessions) were 7.8 and >13.3 for thiobencarb, 2.2 and 4.3 for molinate, 16.5 and 428.7 for fenoxaprop-ethyl, and 2.0 and 12.0 for bispyribac-sodium. Minimum and maximum E. oryzoides R/S ratios (average of two experiments) were 21.9 and 4.6 for thiobencarb and molinate, respectively. A resistant E. phyllopogon (one accession tested) and the susceptible control were killed by POST applications of glyphosate, glufosinate, and clomazone, and by a preemergence application of pendimethalin. Thus, the repeated use of the few available grass herbicides in the predominantly monocultured O. sativa of California has selected for herbicide resistance in E. oryzoides and E. phyllopogon. The introduction of herbicides with new mechanisms of action will be useful to manage herbicide-resistant E. oryzoides and E. phyllopogon. However, cross- and multiple resistance emphasize the need to integrate herbicide use with nonchemical means of weed management.

Late watergrass is a serious weed of California rice that has evolved resistance to molinate, thiobencarb, fenoxaprop-ethyl, and bispyribac-sodium. To obtain an insight into the origin and spread of resistant (R) late watergrass in California rice fields, we evaluated similarities in morphological traits and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprints among 15 R strains compared with susceptible (S) strains. All strains were derived by inbreeding from accessions collected in rice fields of the Sacramento Valley, CA. In the field, R plants were shorter than S plants; they also had narrower and shorter flag leaves and thinner culms. Spikelets also appeared smaller and more slender in R plants. There was greater morphological similarity among the 15 R strains than among the eight S strains. The mean coefficients of variation for morphological traits were much smaller among R strains, which in a cluster analysis (Ward's method) were grouped morphologically apart at early clustering stages from the more variable S strains. AFLP electropherograms also showed greater similarity between R strains. R strains were grouped separately from the S strains in a cluster analysis based on calculated Nei and Li coefficients used in an unweighted pair group method using arithmetic means. However, small genetic differences also existed because the R strains were grouped into six clusters, suggesting that R strains were not samples from an identical strain. It was concluded that R strains originated from a preexisting and preadapted mutant late watergrass population in the Sacramento Valley. This study establishes that resistance moved by spikelet dispersal, not independent mutation events, most likely defined the geographical distribution of R late watergrass in California. Prevention and control of this dispersal combined with elimination of seed-producing survivors after herbicide treatment should be relevant components of the integrated management of herbicide-resistant late watergrass in California rice.

Johnsongrass control in fallowed sugarcane fields was evaluated with glyphosate and the graminicides quizalofop, fluazifop, and clethodim applied in soybean compared with nonsoybean tillage and glyphosate programs. Glyphosate was applied to glyphosate-resistant soybean as a single early postemergence (EPOST) treatment around 30 d after planting (DAP) at rates of 840, 1,120, or 2,240 g ai/ha; as sequential treatments EPOST and late postemergence (LPOST) around 60 DAP at 560 followed by (fb) 560 or 1,120 fb 1,120 g/ha; or as a single LPOST treatment at 2,240 g/ha. Quizalofop at 77 g ai/ha, fluazifop at 420 g ai/ha, and clethodim at 280 g ai/ha were also evaluated as single EPOST treatments. In 1996 johnsongrass control 7 d after EPOST treatment (DAT) was at least 90% for glyphosate treatments but control was 73 to 77% for the graminicides. In 1997 johnsongrass control 7 DAT was at least 82% for all herbicide treatments. Excellent johnsongrass control approximately 50 DAT was achieved both years with all the glyphosate and graminicide treatments. In the nonsoybean fallow weed control programs where plots were tilled twice or three times fb one or two glyphosate applications, complete control of johnsongrass was obtained both years. In 1996 when glyphosate was applied EPOST or EPOST fb LPOST, soybean yields were equivalent and averaged 3.3 times that of the single LPOST glyphosate application. Soybean yields where the graminicides were used and where glyphosate was applied as a single LPOST treatment were no greater than the nontreated control. Economic analysis on the basis of soybean yield data and variable costs of herbicides, seed, field application, seedbed preparation, tillage, labor, fuel, repairs, and custom harvest expense in 1996 showed a positive net return only for glyphosate applied EPOST at 840 g/ha ($99.82/ha) or 1,120 g/ha ($46.94/ha) and for glyphosate applied at 560 g/ha EPOST fb LPOST ($10.41/ha). Although showing a negative net return, glyphosate applied EPOST at 2,240 g/ha ($−8.32/ha) or EPOST fb LPOST at 1,120 g/ha ($−50.97/ha), the loss was less than that for nonsoybean fallow tillage and glyphosate programs ($−155.70/ha and $−157.78/ha). In 1997, when soybean was not harvested because of environmental conditions, variable costs exceeded those of the nonsoybean programs, indicating that planting soybean strictly as a cover crop would not be economically advantageous. Sugarcane growth and yield the year following the fallow programs was not negatively affected by production of soybean regardless of herbicide program.

Three field experiments were conducted to evaluate efficacy of BAS 625, cyhalofop, and fenoxaprop plus isoxadifen when applied alone or with acifluorfen plus bentazon, acifluorfen, bentazon, triclopyr, bensulfuron, halosulfuron, carfentrazone, and propanil. Broadleaf signalgrass control with fenoxaprop plus isoxadifen was reduced by triclopyr and halosufuron. None of these herbicides reduced Amazon sprangletop control by fenoxaprop plus isoxadifen. Barnyardgrass control with fenoxaprop plus isoxadifen was reduced by halosulfuron and propanil. Barnyardgrass and Amazon sprangletop control by cyhalofop was reduced by bentazon plus acifluorfen, bentazon, acifluorfen, triclopyr, bensulfuron, or halosulfuron. Broadleaf signalgrass control with cyhalofop was reduced by triclopyr and halosulfuron. Amazon sprangletop control by cyhalofop was reduced by all herbicides. Barnyardgrass control with BAS 625 was reduced when applied with propanil, bentazon, or bentazon plus acifluorfen. Broadleaf signalgrass control with BAS 625 was reduced when applied with bentazon plus acifluorfen. Amazon sprangletop control with BAS 625 was reduced when applied with bentazon, acifluorfen, halosulfuron, or propanil.

Field experiments were conducted in Greece during 1997, 1998, and 1999 to study the efficacy of various preemergence and postemergence herbicides against red rice. Tolerance of rice seeded 15 and 6 d after preemergence and postemergence herbicide application was also examined. Control of red rice with alachlor, dimethenamid, metolachlor, or acetochlor applied preemergence was 92, 84, 92, and 92%, respectively. The corresponding control with postemergence applications of paraquat, glyphosate, glufosinate, or quizalofop-ethyl to emerged red rice seedlings was 92, 89, 81, and 100%, respectively. None of the herbicides had any phytotoxic effect on rice cultivars planted after the herbicide application, and grain yield produced in treated plots was higher than that in untreated plots. These results clearly showed that red rice can be effectively controlled by applying the previously mentioned preemergence or postemergence herbicides and that rice could be safely seeded 15 and 6 d after treatment, respectively.
