In this work, we consider two sets of dependent variables $\{X_{1},\ldots,X_{n}\}$ and $\{Y_{1},\ldots,Y_{n}\}$, where $X_{i}\sim EW(\alpha_{i},\lambda_{i},k_{i})$ and $Y_{i}\sim EW(\beta_{i},\mu_{i},l_{i})$, for $i=1,\ldots, n$, which are coupled by Archimedean copulas having different generators. We then establish different inequalities between two extremes, namely, $X_{1:n}$ and $Y_{1:n}$ and $X_{n:n}$ and $Y_{n:n}$, in terms of the usual stochastic, star, Lorenz, hazard rate, reversed hazard rate and dispersive orders. Several examples and counterexamples are presented for illustrating all the results established here. Some of the results here extend the existing results of [5] (Barmalzan, G., Ayat, S.M., Balakrishnan, N., & Roozegar, R. (2020). Stochastic comparisons of series and parallel systems with dependent heterogeneous extended exponential components under Archimedean copula. Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics 380: Article No. 112965).

Recently, the relevation transformation has received further attention from researchers, and some interesting results have been developed. It is well known that the active redundancy at component level results in a more reliable coherent system than that at system level. However, the lack of study of this problem with relevation redundancy prevents us from fully understanding such a generalization of the active redundancy. In this note we deal with relevation redundancy to coherent systems of homogeneous components. Typically, for a series system of independent components, we have proved that the lifetime of a system with relevation redundancy at component level is larger than that with relevation redundancy at system level in the sense of the usual stochastic order and the likelihood ratio order, respectively. For a coherent system with dependent components, we have developed a sufficient condition in terms of the domination function to the usual stochastic order between the system lifetime with redundancy at component level and that at system level.

In the usual shock models, the shocks arrive from a single source. Bozbulut and Eryilmaz [(2020). Generalized extreme shock models and their applications. Communications in Statistics – Simulation and Computation 49(1): 110–120] introduced two types of extreme shock models when the shocks arrive from one of $m\geq 1$ possible sources. In Model 1, the shocks arrive from different sources over time. In Model 2, initially, the shocks randomly come from one of $m$ sources, and shocks continue to arrive from the same source. In this paper, we prove that the lifetime of Model 1 is less than Model 2 in the usual stochastic ordering. We further show that if the inter-arrival times of shocks have increasing failure rate distributions, then the usual stochastic ordering can be generalized to the hazard rate ordering. We study the stochastic behavior of the lifetime of Model 2 with respect to the severity of shocks using the notion of majorization. We apply the new stochastic ordering results to show that the age replacement policy under Model 1 is more costly than Model 2.

Let $\{Y_{1},\ldots ,Y_{n}\}$ be a collection of interdependent nonnegative random variables, with $Y_{i}$ having an exponentiated location-scale model with location parameter $\mu _i$, scale parameter $\delta _i$ and shape (skewness) parameter $\beta _i$, for $i\in \mathbb {I}_{n}=\{1,\ldots ,n\}$. Furthermore, let $\{L_1^{*},\ldots ,L_n^{*}\}$ be a set of independent Bernoulli random variables, independently of $Y_{i}$'s, with $E(L_{i}^{*})=p_{i}^{*}$, for $i\in \mathbb {I}_{n}.$ Under this setup, the portfolio of risks is the collection $\{T_{1}^{*}=L_{1}^{*}Y_{1},\ldots ,T_{n}^{*}=L_{n}^{*}Y_{n}\}$, wherein $T_{i}^{*}=L_{i}^{*}Y_{i}$ represents the $i$th claim amount. This article then presents several sufficient conditions, under which the smallest claim amounts are compared in terms of the usual stochastic and hazard rate orders. The comparison results are obtained when the dependence structure among the claim severities are modeled by (i) an Archimedean survival copula and (ii) a general survival copula. Several examples are also presented to illustrate the established results.

We discuss a new stochastic ordering for the sequence of independent random variables. It generalizes the stochastic precedence (SP) order that is defined for two random variables to the case n > 2. All conventional stochastic orders are transitive, whereas the SP order is not. Therefore, a new approach to compare the sequence of random variables had to be developed that resulted in the notion of the sequential precedence order. A sufficient condition for this order is derived and some examples are considered.

We consider coherent systems with independent and identically distributed components. While it is clear that the system’s life will be stochastically larger when the components are replaced with stochastically better components, we show that, in general, similar results may not hold for hazard rate, reverse hazard rate, and likelihood ratio orderings. We find sufficient conditions on the signature vector for these results to hold. These results are combined with other well-known results in the literature to get more general results for comparing two systems of the same size with different signature vectors and possibly with different independent and identically distributed component lifetimes. Some numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

Sequential order statistics can be used to describe the ordered lifetimes of components of a system when the failure of a component may affect the reliability of the remaining components. After a reliability system consisting of n components fails, some of its components may still be alive. In this paper we first establish some univariate stochastic orderings and ageing properties of the residual lifetimes of the live components in a sequential (n-r+1)-out-of-n system. We also obtain a characterizing result for the exponential distribution based on uncorrelated residual lifetimes of live components. Finally, we provide some sufficient conditions for comparing vectors of residual lifetimes of the live components from two sequential (n-r+1)-out-of-n systems. The results established here extend some well-known results in the literature.

Mao and Hu (2010) left an open problem about the hazard rate order between the largest order statistics from two samples of n geometric random variables. Du et al. (2012) solved this open problem when n = 2, and Wang (2015) solved for 2 ≤ n ≤ 9. In this paper we completely solve this problem for any value of n.

In this paper we derive mixture representations for the reliability functions of the conditional residual life and inactivity time of a coherent system with n independent and identically distributed components. Based on these mixture representations we carry out stochastic comparisons on the conditional residual life, and the inactivity time of two coherent systems with independent and identical components.

To enhance the performance of a system, a common practice employed by reliability engineers is to use redundant components in the system. In this paper we compare lifetimes of series (parallel) systems arising out of different allocations of one or two standby redundancies. These comparisons are made with respect to the increasing concave (convex) order, the hazard rate order, and the stochastic precedence order. The main results extend some related conclusions in the literature.

We investigate stochastic comparisons between exponential family distributions and their mixtures with respect to the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order, the reversed hazard rate order, and the likelihood ratio order. A general theorem based on the notion of relative log-concavity is shown to unify various specific results for the Poisson, binomial, negative binomial, and gamma distributions in recent literature. By expressing a convolution of gamma distributions with arbitrary scale and shape parameters as a scale mixture of gamma distributions, we obtain comparison theorems concerning such convolutions that generalize some known results. Analogous results on convolutions of negative binomial distributions are also discussed.

By considering k-out-of-n systems with independent and nonidentically distributed components, we discuss stochastic monotone properties of the residual life and the inactivity time. We then present some stochastic comparisons of two systems based on the residual life and inactivity time.

Let X = (X1, X2, …, Xn) be an exchangeable random vector, and write X(1:i) = min{X1, X2, …, Xi}, 1 ≤ i ≤ n. In this paper we obtain conditions under which X(1:i) decreases in i in the hazard rate order. A result involving more general (that is, not necessarily exchangeable) random vectors is also derived. These results are applied to obtain the limiting behaviour of the hazard rate function of the lifetimes of various coherent systems in reliability theory. The notions of the Samaniego signatures and the minimal signatures of such systems are extensively used in the paper. An interesting relationship between these two signatures is obtained. The results are illustrated in a series of examples.

Testing in order to produce software of high reliability is an area of major concern in software engineering. In an effort to find efficient methods of testing, the comparison of partition and random sampling testing methods has received considerable attention in the literature. A standard criterion for comparisons between random and partition testing, based on their expected efficacy in program debugging, is the probability of detecting at least one failure causing input in the program's domain. However, the goal in software testing is usually to find as many faults as possible in a reasonable period of time, and therefore stochastic comparisons of the number of faults obtained in partition and random testing may provide more valuable information on which testing procedures to use. We establish various conditions which guarantee that the number of faults discovered in partition testing is stochastically greater than the number discovered in random testing (using a fixed total sample size) for many of the well-established stochastic orders (including the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order, the likelihood ratio order, and the variability order). The results established also allow us to obtain both upper and lower bounds with these stochastic orders for the sum of n independent Bernoulli random trials (with varying probability of success) in terms of the binomial distribution with parameters n and p.

The ‘minimal’ repair of a system can take several forms. Statistical or black box minimal repair at failure time t is equivalent to replacing the system with another functioning one of the same age, but without knowledge of precisely what went wrong with the system. Its major attribute is its mathematical tractability. In physical minimal repair, at system failure time t, we minimally repair the ‘component’ which brought the system down at time t. The work of Arjas and Norros, Finkelstein, and Natvig is reviewed. The concept of a rate function for minimal repairs of the statistical and physical types are discussed and developed. It is shown that the number of physical minimal repairs is stochastically larger than the number of statistical minimal repairs for k out of n systems with similar components. Some majorization results are given for physical minimal repair for two component parallel systems with exponential components.

Let X1, X2,… be a sequence of independent random variables and let N be a positive integer-valued random variable which is independent of the Xi. In this paper we obtain some stochastic comparison results involving min {X1, X2,…, XN) and max{X1, X2,…, XN}.

The purpose of this paper is to study two notions of stochastic comparisons of non-negative random variables via ratios that are determined by their Laplace transforms. Some interpretations of the new orders are given, and various properties of them are derived. The relationships to other stochastic orders are also studied. Finally, some applications in reliability theory are described.

First, some basic concepts from the theory of point processes are recalled and expanded. Then some notions of stochastic comparisons, which compare whole processes, are introduced. The use of these notions is illustrated by stochastically comparing renewal and related processes. Finally, applications of the different notions of stochastic ordering of point processes to many replacement policies are given.

The hazard rate ordering is an ordering for random variables which compares lifetimes with respect to their hazard rate functions. It is stronger than the usual stochastic order for random variables, yet is weaker than the likelihood ratio ordering. The hazard rate ordering is particularly useful in reliability theory and survival analysis, owing to the importance of the hazard rate function in these areas. In this paper earlier work on the hazard rate ordering is reviewed, and extensive new results related to coherent systems are derived. Initially we fix the form of a coherent structure and investigate the effect on the hazard rate function of the system when we switch the lifetimes of its components from the vector (T1, · ··, Tn) to the vector (T′1, · ··, T′n), where the hazard rate functions of the two vectors are assumed to be comparable in some sense. Although the hazard rate ordering is closed under the formation of series systems, we see that this is not the case for parallel systems even when the system is a two-component parallel system with exponentially distributed lifetimes. A positive result shows that for two-component parallel systems with proportional hazards (λ1r(t), λ2r(t))), the more diverse (λ1, λ2) is in the sense of majorization the stronger is the system in the hazard rate ordering. Unfortunately even this result does not extend to parallel systems with more than two components, demonstrating again the delicate nature of the hazard rate ordering.

The principal result of the paper concerns the hazard rate ordering for the lifetime of a k-out-of-n system. It is shown that if τ k|n is the lifetime of a k-out-of-n system, then τ k|n is greater than τ k+1|n in the hazard rate ordering for any k. This has an interesting interpretation in the language of order statistics. For independent (not necessarily identically distributed) lifetimes T1, · ··, Tn, we let Tk:n represent the kth order statistic (in increasing order). Then it is shown that Tk +1:n is greater than Tk:n in the hazard rate ordering for all k = 1, ···, n − 1. The result does not, however, extend to the stronger likelihood ratio order.
