Measurement of internal structures in the prestellar core is essential for understanding the initial conditions prior to star formation. In this work, we study the ammonia lines (NH$_{3}$) (J, K = 1,1 and 2,2) in the central region of the prestellar core L1517B with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope (spatial resolution $\sim$ 3.7′′). Our analysis indicates that the central region of the core is close-to-round in shape obtained both from NH$_{3}$ (1,1) and (2,2) emissions. Radially averaged kinetic temperature ($T_{k}$) is almost constant with a mean value of $\sim$ 9 K. A radially sharp decrease in kinetic temperature ($T_{k}$) has not been observed inside the central dense nucleus of this prestellar core. In addition, we also notice that there is an overall velocity gradient from north-east to south-west direction in this region, which may be indicative of the rotational motion of the core. We then calculate the parameter $\beta$, which is defined as the ratio of rotational energy to gravitational potential energy and find that $\beta$ equals to $\sim$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$; which indicates that rotation has no effect at least inside the central region of the core. We also perform the viral analysis and observe that the central region may be in a stage of contraction. From this study, we also show that turbulence inside the central region is subsonic in nature (sonic Mach number, $M_{s}$ $<$ 1) and has no prominent length-scale dependence. Furthermore, we notice that the decrement of excitation temperature ($T_{ex}$) and column density of NH$_{3}$ from the centre of the core to the outer side with the peak values of $\sim$ 5.6 K and $\sim$ 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. In conclusion, this work examines different physical and kinematical properties of the central region of the L1517B prestellar core.

Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs) represent a relatively new class of pulsar, primarily characterised by their sporadic bursting emission of single pulses on time scales of minutes to hours. In addition to the difficulty involved in detecting these objects, low-frequency ( $ \lt 300\,\text{MHz}$ ) observations of RRATs are sparse, which makes understanding their broadband emission properties in the context of the normal pulsar population problematic. Here, we present the simultaneous detection of RRAT J2325−0530 using the Murchison Widefield Array (154 MHz) and Parkes radio telescope ( $1.4\,\text{GHz}$ ). On a single-pulse basis, we produce the first polarimetric profile of this pulsar, measure the spectral index ( $\alpha={-2.2\pm 0.1}$ ), pulse energy distributions, and present the pulse rates in the context of detections in previous epochs. We find that the distribution of time between subsequent pulses is consistent with a Poisson process and find no evidence of clustering over the $\sim\!1.5\,\text{h}$ observations. Finally, we are able to quantify the scintillation properties of RRAT J2325−0530 at 1.4 GHz, where the single pulses are modulated substantially across the observing bandwidth, and show that this characterisation is feasible even with irregular time sampling as a consequence of the sporadic emission behaviour.

The apparent lack of cold molecular gas in blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies is at variance with their intense star-formation episode. The CO molecule, often used a tracer of H2 through a conversion function, is selectively photodissociated in dust-poor environments and, as a result, a potentially large fraction of H2 is expected to reside in the so-called CO-dark gas, where it could be traced instead by infrared cooling lines [CI], [CII], and [OI]. Although the fraction of CO-dark gas to total molecular gas is in theory expected to be relatively large in metal-poor galaxies, many uncertainties remain due to the difficulty in identifying the main heating mechanism associated to the cooling lines observed in such galaxies.

Investigations of the Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey (DGS; Madden et al.2013) show that the heating mechanism in the neutral gas of BCDs cannot be dominated by the photoelectric effect on dust grains below some threshold metallicity due to the low abundance of dust and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, implying that other heating mechanisms need to be invoked, along with a new interpretation of the corresponding infrared line diagnostics. In the study presented here and in Lebouteiller et al. (2017), we use optical and infrared lines to constrain the physical conditions in the HII region + HI region of the BCD I Zw 18 (18 Mpc; ≍2% solar metallicity) within a consistent photoionization and photodissociation model. We show that the HI region is entirely heated by a single ultraluminous X-ray source with important consequences on the applicability of [CII] to trace the star-formation rate and to trace the CO-dark gas. We derive stringent upper limits on the size of H2 clumps that may be detected in the future with JWST and IRAM/NOEMA. We also show that the nature of the X-ray source can be inferred from the corresponding signatures in the ISM. Finally we speculate that star formation may be quenched in extremely metal-poor dwarf galaxies due to X-ray photoionization.

This review examines observations of magnetic fields in molecular clouds, that is, at spatial scales ranging from tens to tenths of parsecs and densities up to hundreds of particles per cubic centimetre. I will briefly summarize the techniques for observing and mapping magnetic fields in molecular clouds. I will review important examples of observational results obtained using each technique and their implications for our understanding of the role of the magnetic field in molecular cloud formation and evolution. Finally, I will briefly discuss the prospects for advances in our observational capabilities with telescopes and instruments now beginning operation or under construction.

In this short overview we summarize our knowledge of twenty five pulsars showing GPS characteristics. Especially, we will focus on two objects. The first is PSR B1800–21 - a Vela-like GPS pulsar with a variable spectrum. The second is PSR J1740+1000 - a pulsar that shows high frequency turnover based on our most recent observations using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and the Green Bank Telescope.

International LOFAR stations, equipped with powerful backends, can be used as individual telescopes, and provide data sets complementary to those obtained with the LOFAR Core. Such “local mode” observations are particularly adapted to monitoring observations, where the advantage of having a high observing cadence (one observation per week) outweighs the reduced sensitivity of a single station when compared to the full array. With such observations, it is possible to monitor the temporal evolution of the pulsars’ behaviour via its dispersion, scattering, intensity, and profile shape. We present recent studies performed in the LOFAR low band (10-90 MHz).

Scintillation arcs provide an unprecedented degree of detail into the scattering of radio waves from pulsars. We review evidence that has emerged over the last fifteen years that: a) the scattering of many nearby pulsars is dominated by one or several relatively thin “screens” of material, b) the resulting image on the sky is highly linear, with axial ratios at least as high as 10:1, and c) this arrangement is persistent for at least one source (B1133+16) for at least 25 years. We expand on the idea of Pen and Levin (2014) and previous authors that such scattering may be caused by linear sheets of plasma seen nearly edge-on. Further analysis of such scintillation arcs, including new work on multi-frequency, multi-epoch observations, should help elucidate the astrophysical nature of these ubiquitous scattering entities, which are currently not convincingly linked with any known structures.

The heliospheric modulation model HelMod solves the transport-equation for Galactic Cosmic Ray propagation through the heliosphere down to Earth. It is based on a 2-D Monte Carlo approach that includes a general description of the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the diffusion tensor, thus properly treating the particle drift effects as well as convection within the solar wind and adiabatic energy loss. The model was tuned in order to fit 1) the data observed outside the ecliptic plane at several distances from the Earth and 2) the spectra observed near the Earth for both, high and low solar activity periods. Great importance was given to description of polar regions of the heliosphere. We present the flux for protons, antiprotons and helium nuclei computed for solar cycle 23-24 in comparison with experimental observations and prediction for the full solar cycle 24.

The star formation rate in the Central Molecular Zone is an order of magnitude lower than in the disk of the Galaxy, given the amount of dense gas there. Understanding why star formation is different in this region is crucial if we are to understand the environmental dependence of star formation. Here, we present the detection of high-mass cores in the CMZ’s ‘dust ridge’ that have been discovered with the Submillimeter Array. These cores range in mass from ~ 50 – 1800 M⊙ within radii of 0.1 – 0.25 pc. All are young (pre-UCHII), meaning that they are prime candidates for representing the initial conditions of high-mass stars and sub-clusters. We compare these with high-mass cores and clouds in the Galactic disk and find that they are very similar in terms of their masses and sizes, despite being subjected to external pressures that are several magnitudes greater (~ 108 K cm−3). The fact that > 80% of these cores do not show any signs of star-forming activity in such a high-pressure environment leads us to conclude that this is further evidence of the critical density for star formation being heightened in the CMZ due to turbulence.

We use the stellar census of OB associations in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to predict the Hα luminosities of the host HII regions, based on results from stellar atmosphere models. These values are compared to the observed HII region luminosities, yielding an estimate for the mean fraction of H-ionising photons that escape the local nebulae in this sample. We formally estimate that, overall, 0–51% of the ionising radiation escapes the local HII regions and is available to ionise the warm, ionised medium in the LMC. We find both nebulae that appear to be density-bounded and ones that appear to be radiation-bounded.

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been surveyed in optical emission lines, X-rays, radio continuum, HI, and CO lines. These surveys provide views of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the LMC of unprecedented clarity, allowing us to study astrophysical processes and to examine the relationship among the different phases of the ISM. Multi-wavelength images are used to illustrate the physical structures of supernova remnants, superbubbles, and supergiant shells, as well as the global interstellar structure of the LMC.

The Magellanic Clouds are unique in providing us with sites to study the interstellar medium (ISM) and its components at all scales. To promote the pursuit of such studies, we have begun the Magellanic Cloud Emission-line Survey (MCELS), a deep imaging survey of both of these nearby galaxies in the emission of Hα, [S II], and [O III]. The emission-line images will be used in detailed optical and multiwavelength studies of H II regions, supernova remnants, planetary nebulae, superbubbles, and supergiant shells. Together with parallel surveys at other wavelengths, this survey will provide the foundation upon which to build a deeper understanding of the ISM in the Clouds and other galaxies, from small scales (∼1 pc) all the way up to global scales.

A 3-day Focus Meeting entitled “Stellar Physics in Galaxies throughout the Universe” was held during the IAU XXIX General Assembly. The meeting brought together astrophysicists from the stellar physics, extragalactic astrophysics and cosmology communities to discuss how current and future results can foster progress in these disjoint science areas. Areas covered include stellar evolution of single and binary stars from the zero-age main-sequence to the terminal stage, the feedback of stars to the interstellar medium via radiation, dust production and chemical enrichment, and the properties of the most massive stars and of cosmologically significant stellar phases such as AGB and Wolf-Rayet stars. The limitations of our understanding of the physics of local stars and their effects on, e.g., ages, chemical composition and the initial mass function of galaxies at low to high redshift were evaluated.

On scales of ≳ several hundred parsec, there are relatively well defined observed relations between the star formation rate surface density of a galaxy and its gas content. I present a short summary of the so-called ‘star formation laws’ and discuss the most established models to explain their origin. Nevertheless, none of the models can explain the offset of these relations, which requires a low star formation efficiency within the total and/or molecular gas. Stellar feedback is proposed to limit the star formation efficiency locally. I discuss the available feedback mechanisms and show recent simulation results on the evolution of the multi-phase interstellar medium under the influence of gravity, cooling, feedback-driven outflows and heating.

This review covers four current questions in the behavior of the atomic and molecular interstellar medium. These include whether the atomic gas originates primarily in cold streams or hot flows onto galaxies; what the filling factor of cold gas actually is in galactic regions observationally determined to be completely molecular; whether molecular hydrogen determines or merely traces star formation; and whether gravity or turbulence drives the dynamical motions observed in interstellar clouds, with implications on their star formation properties.

Contrary to common belief, the column density PDFs of molecular clouds are not described well by log-normal functions, but are instead power-laws with exponents close to two. We argue that the intrinsic functional form of the PDF cannot be securely determined below AK ~ 0.1-0.2 mag, limiting our ability to investigate more complex models for the shape of the cloud PDF.

By proclaiming the IYL2015, the United Nations recognized the importance of light and light based technology in the lives of the citizens of the world and for the development of global society on many levels. Light and application of light science and technology are vital for existing and future advances in many scientific areas and culture. Light is a key element in astronomy: as astronomers, it is what we study and makes our science possible, but it is also what threatens our observations when it is set-off from the ground (light pollution). The UN-designated year 2015 represented a magnificent and unique opportunity for the global astronomical community to disseminate these messages and raise the awareness of the importance and preservation of dark skies for heritage and the natural environment.

As such, the International Year of Light served as a launching pad for several projects during 2015. Two other projects with equally as impressive programs are highlighted and begin the narrative for this section on public education and outreach programs on light pollution issues and solutions.

The extraction of foreground and CMB maps from multi-frequency observations relies mostly on the different frequency behavior of the different components. Existing Bayesian methods additionally make use of a Gaussian prior for the CMB whose correlation structure is described by an unknown angular power spectrum. We argue for the natural extension of this by using non-trivial priors also for the foreground components. Focusing on diffuse Galactic foregrounds, we propose a log-normal model including unknown spatial correlations within each component and cross-correlations between the different foreground components. We present case studies at low resolution that demonstrate the superior performance of this model when compared to an analysis with flat priors for all components.

One of the key factors in explaining nature of DIB carriers is to find regularities in their spectrum. Such a regular set of DIBs exists within interval λλ 6770–6865 Å. A possible new sequence of weak DIBs between λλ 5910–5990 Å is presented here. The new sequence is clearly visible in high resolution spectra (R ≳ 100,000) of some hot, reddened stars. Wavenumbers' differences, or spacings, between the most strong bands have values ~35, ~40 cm−1, which are very similar to those, found for DIBs near 6800 Å.

With modern large scale spectroscopic surveys, such as the SDSS and LSS-GAC, Galactic astronomy has entered the era of millions of stellar spectra. Taking advantage of the huge spectroscopic database, we propose to use a “standard pair" technique to a) Estimate multi-band extinction towards sightlines of millions of stars; b) Detect and measure the diffuse interstellar bands in hundreds of thousands SDSS and LAMOST low-resolution spectra; c) Search for extremely faint emission line nebulae in the Galaxy; and d) Perform photometric calibration for wide field imaging surveys. In this contribution, we present some results of applying this technique to the SDSS data, and report preliminary results from the LAMOST data.
