Oxine sorption by binary mixtures of montmorillonite and silica gel was studied at pH 5 as a function of oxine concentration and mixture composition. The investigation was made to resolve the problem of the determination of the oxine sorbed by each substance, inasmuch as the total amount sorbed by the mixture is the only value accessible experimentally. By the application of the thermodynamic method of partial quantities, the apparent and partial specific sorption by the clay and by the gel were calculated. These sorption values were found to increase with oxine concentration and to decrease as the proportion of the clay increased in the mixtures.

Atrazine and S-metolachlor are the herbicides most relied on by growers to control weeds in sweet corn crops grown in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) in southern Florida. Alternative weed management programs are needed. Field experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate the efficacy of 1) pyroxasulfone (183 and 237 g ha−1) alone or as a premix with carfentrazone-ethyl (13 and 17 g ha−1) or fluthiacet-methyl (6 and 7 g ha−1), S-metolachlor (1,790 g ha−1) alone or in combination with atrazine (3,360 g ha−1) applied preemergence(PRE); 2) mesotrione (105 g ha−1), topramezone (25 g ha−1), and tembotrione (92 g ha−1) applied postemergence alone or in combination with atrazine (560 and 2,240 g ha−1) or bentazon (1,120 g ha−1); and 3) mechanical cultivation alone at the fourth and the fourth followed by the sixth leaf stages of sweet corn. PRE-applied herbicides did not provide acceptable control of fall panicum, common lambsquarters, or common purslane probably due to a lack of incorporation into the soil because of limited rainfall. POST-applied topramezone alone or in combination with atrazine or bentazon resulted in effective fall panicum control (>91%). Topramezone alone provided 83% and 88% control of common lambsquarters and common purslane, respectively, whereas atrazine added to topramezone resulted in >94% control of both weed species. Mesotrione and tembotrione plus atrazine provided excellent control (>93%) of both broadleaf weed species but poor fall panicum control (<72%). Mechanical cultivation alone did not effectively control any weeds. Overall, treatments that contained topramezone resulted in greater sweet corn yield. These results show that a combination of topramezone, mesotrione, and tembotrione with atrazine resulted in improved broadleaf weed control. Fall panicum control was improved only with the combination of topramezone with atrazine, showing that atrazine is an important mixture component of these herbicides to provide effective POST weed control in sweet corn on organic soils of the EAA.

Sugarcane infested with bermudagrass and harvested as seed cane introduces the potential for weedy propagules to reinfest fields. Research was conducted in 2018 and 2019 following sugarcane harvest for seed cane to evaluate bermudagrass management with photosystem II (PSII)- and 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)–inhibiting herbicides applied alone or mixed with triclopyr. Combinations of diuron at 2.8 kg ha–1 with clomazone at 1.5 kg ha–1 or triclopyr at 1.1 kg ha–1 and hexazinone at 0.74 kg ha–1 with triclopyr applied early POST (EPOST) in mid-February injured bermudagrass 85% to 86%, and injury was greater than diuron or hexazinone alone (16% and 10%) in mid-March. Bermudagrass injury decreased to 45% to 56% for these combination treatments by April; however, injury differences were similar to the earlier rating. Late POST (LPOST) mid-March application of these treatments indicated similar bermudagrass injury trends when evaluated in early April. By mid-May, however, no treatment resulted in greater than 18% bermudagrass injury. Clomazone plus diuron applied LPOST resulted in 19% sugarcane injury by early April; however, all other treatments resulted in 7% sugarcane injury or less. In mid-May, a mid-April EPOST application of topramezone at 0.025 kg ha–1 plus triclopyr at 1.1 kg ha–1 resulted in 62% bermudagrass injury, which was equivalent to that observed with other topramezone rates in this combination (0.012 and 0.037 kg ha–1) (54% to 60%). Bermudagrass injury from triclopyr mixed with mesotrione (32%) or triclopyr mixed with atrazine, mesotrione, and S-metolachlor (47% to 55%) resulted in bermudagrass injury similar to that with topramezone plus triclopyr (54% to 62%). Data showed the flexibility of triclopyr when mixed with several HPPD- or PSII-inhibitor herbicides for bermudagrass management in a Louisiana sugarcane cropping system. Greater flexibility in application timing for HPPD-inhibitor herbicides than for PSII-inhibitor herbicides (diuron or hexazinone), and mixed with triclopyr, may suppress bermudagrass POST in April and May with minimal sugarcane injury.

A study was conducted at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center’s H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station in 2017 and 2018 to evaluate the interaction between a prepackage mixture of clomazone plus pendimethalin applied at 0, 760, 1,145, or 1,540 g ai ha−1 mixed with propanil at 0, 1,120, 2,240, or 4,485 g ai ha−1. A synergistic response occurred when barnyardgrass was treated with all rates of clomazone plus pendimethalin mixed with either rate of propanil evaluated at 56 d after treatment (DAT). Unlike barnyardgrass, an antagonistic response occurred in yellow nutsedge used as a control when treated with 760 and 1,540 g ha−1 of clomazone plus pendimethalin mixed with 1,120 or 22,40 g ha−1 of propanil at 28 DAT; however, 1,145 g ha−1 of clomazone plus pendimethalin mixed with 4,485 g ha−1 of propanil resulted in a neutral interaction. At 28 DAT, rice flatsedge treated with all herbicide mixtures resulted in neutral interactions. The synergism of clomazone plus pendimethalin applied at 1,540 g ha−1 mixed with propanil applied at 2,240 or 4,485 g ha−1 to control barnyardgrass resulted in an increased rough rice yield compared with 760 or 1,145 g ha−1 of clomazone plus pendimethalin mixed with propanil applied at 1,120 or 2,240 g ha−1. These results indicate that if barnyardgrass and rice flatsedge are present in a rice field the prepackage mixture of clomazone plus pendimethalin mixed with propanil can be an option for growers. However, if yellow nutsedge infest the area other herbicides may be needed.

The study of desirable structural properties that define a marketable insurance contract has been a recurring theme in insurance economic theory and practice. In this article, we develop probabilistic and structural characterizations for insurance indemnities that are universally marketable in the sense that they appeal to all policyholders whose risk preferences respect the convex order. We begin with the univariate case where a given policyholder faces a single risk, then extend our results to the case where multiple risks possessing a certain dependence structure coexist. The non-decreasing and 1-Lipschitz condition, in various forms, is shown to be intimately related to the notion of universal marketability. As the highlight of this article, we propose a multivariate mixture model which not only accommodates a host of dependence structures commonly encountered in practice but is also flexible enough to house a rich class of marketable indemnity schedules.

Doveweed is a problematic weed species in many agricultural ecosystems as well as on roadsides and rights-of-way. Effective POST chemical control options for doveweed are limited in many cropping systems. Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of metsulfuron-methyl dose and the impact of mixtures and sequential applications of either trifloxysulfuron-sodium or bentazon with metsulfuron-methyl for doveweed control. By 14 d after the initial treatment, applying 0.04 kg ai ha−1 metsulfuron-methyl, either once or sequentially, provided 100% control of doveweed. Application of trifloxysulfuron-sodium at 0.04 kg ai ha−1 alone or in mixture with metsulfuron-methyl (0.04 kg ha−1) did not provide consistent doveweed control nor did it reduce biomass. Trifloxysulfuron-sodium applied alone at 0.08 kg ha−1 or in a mixture with metsulfuron-methyl (0.04 kg ha−1) provided consistent doveweed control (>80%). A single application of bentazon (0.56 kg ai ha−1) was ineffective at controlling doveweed. A single application of the bentazon and metsulfuron-methyl mixture (0.56 + 0.04 kg ha−1, respectively) or sequential applications of either bentazon alone (0.56 kg ha−1) or in mixture with metsulfuron-methyl (0.04 kg ha−1) provided excellent doveweed control (100%) by 35 d after treatment. Overall, single applications of metsulfuron-methyl (0.02 to 0.17 kg ha−1) or mixtures of metsulfuron-methyl with trifloxysulfuron-sodium (0.04 + 0.08 kg ha−1, respectively) or bentazon (0.04 + 0.56 kg ha−1, respectively) controlled doveweed and may be useful for enhancing the control spectrum for other weeds. Sequential applications of the bentazon and metsulfuron-methyl mixture (0.56 + 0.04 kg ha−1, respectively) provided doveweed control and are a resistance-management strategy for doveweed.

A study was conducted in 2017 and 2018 at the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station near Crowley, LA, to evaluate quizalofop at 120 g ai ha−1 applied independently or in a mixture with clomazone, pendimethalin, clomazone plus pendimethalin, or a prepackaged mixture of clomazone plus pendimethalin when PVLO1 rice reached the two- to three-leaf stage. A second application of quizalofop at 120 g ha−1 was applied 21 d after the initial application. At 7 days after treatment (DAT), antagonism of quizalofop occurred when mixed with clomazone at 334 g ai ha−1, clomazone at 334 g ai ha−1 plus pendimethalin at 810 g ai ha−1, or a prepackaged mixture of clomazone plus pendimethalin at 334 plus 810 g ai ha−1, respectively, when applied to barnyardgrass. At 7 DAT, a neutral interaction occurred with a mixture of quizalofop plus pendimethalin at 810 g ha−1. These data indicate the antagonism of quizalofop was overcome at 14, 28, and 42 DAT with a neutral interaction for barnyardgrass control, 94% to 98%, with all herbicide mixtures evaluated. A neutral interaction occurred for CL-111, CLXL-745, and red rice control when treated with all the herbicide mixtures evaluated across all evaluation dates. Rice yield decreased when not treated with the initial quizalofop application.

Cultivar mixtures of winter barley and spring barley, together with their component monocultures, were grown in field trials to assess the effect of cultivar combinations on both straw and grain yield. The overall grain yields for all trials were significantly higher for the cultivar mixtures than for the corresponding component monocultures. Also, significant decreases in rhynchosporium disease severity for cultivar mixtures were recorded for most non-fungicide treatments. The size of these responses was often significantly correlated with the component number of the mixtures. The amount of straw produced in mixtures was sometimes changed significantly, but not always in a positive direction and it was only correlated with increasing mixture component number in two environments. No correlation of straw yield potential of cultivars with performance in mixtures was found. Cultivar × cultivar mixture × environment interactions appeared to affect the relative yield of grain and straw differentially and therefore it was not possible to predict the effect of mixtures on the harvest index.

Experiments were conducted to study the effect of application rate, growth stage, and tank-mixing azimsulfuron or bentazon on the activity of cyhalofop, clefoxydim, and penoxsulam against two morphologically distinct Echinochloa species from rice fields in Greece. Mixtures of penoxsulam with MCPA were also evaluated. Cyhalofop (300 to 600 g ai/ha) applied at the three- to four-leaf growth stage provided 62 to 85% control of early watergrass but 41 to 83% control of late watergrass averaged over mixture treatments. Control ranged from 37 to 80% for early watergrass and from 35 to 78% for late watergrass when cyhalofop was applied at the five- to six-leaf growth stage averaged over mixture treatments. Mixtures of cyhalofop with azimsulfuron or bentazon reduced efficacy on both species irrespective of growth stage or cyhalofop application rate compared with cyhalofop alone. Clefoxydim (100 to 250 g ai/ha) applied alone at the three- to four-leaf growth stage provided 98 to 100% control of early watergrass and 91 to 100% control of late watergrass; when clefoxydim was applied alone at the five- to six-leaf growth stage the control obtained was 91 to 100% for early watergrass and 79 to 100% for late watergrass. Mixtures of clefoxydim with azimsulfuron or bentazon reduced efficacy on late watergrass at the early growth stage and on both species at the late growth stage. Penoxsulam (20 to 40 g ai/ha) applied alone provided 94 to 100% control of both species at both growth stages. Mixtures of MCPA with penoxsulam reduced efficacy on late watergrass at the early growth stage and on both species at the late growth stage. Mixtures of penoxsulam with azimsulfuron or bentazon reduced efficacy only on late watergrass at the late growth stage.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of application rate, growth stage, and tank mixing azimsulfuron, bentazon, MCPA, propanil, or cyhalofop on the efficacy of bispyribac–sodium against early watergrass and late watergrass from rice fields in northern Greece. Mixtures of bispyribac–sodium with the insecticides carbaryl, diazinon, and dichlorvos were also evaluated. Bispyribac–sodium (24 to 36 g ai/ha) applied alone at the three- to four-leaf growth stage provided 89 to 100% control of early watergrass and 84 to 100% control of late watergrass. When bispyribac–sodium was applied alone at the five- to six-leaf growth stage of early watergrass and late watergrass, control ranged from 78 to 100% and 71 to 100%, respectively. Mixtures of bispyribac–sodium with azimsulfuron provided better control of both species at any growth stage than bispyribac–sodium applied alone. On the contrary, mixtures of bispyribac–sodium with bentazon, MCPA, or propanil were less effective on both species at any growth stage than bispyribac–sodium applied alone. A slight efficacy reduction occurred on both species for the mixture of bispyribac–sodium with cyhalofop. Mixtures of bispyribac–sodium with the insecticides carbaryl or dichlorvos showed reduced efficacy on both species, whereas increased efficacy on both species was observed for mixtures of bispyribac–sodium with diazinon as compared with the single application of bispyribac–sodium.

Lifecourse trajectories of clinical or anthropological attributes are useful for identifying how our early-life experiences influence later-life morbidity and mortality. Researchers often use growth mixture models (GMMs) to estimate such phenomena. It is common to place constrains on the random part of the GMM to improve parsimony or to aid convergence, but this can lead to an autoregressive structure that distorts the nature of the mixtures and subsequent model interpretation. This is especially true if changes in the outcome within individuals are gradual compared with the magnitude of differences between individuals. This is not widely appreciated, nor is its impact well understood. Using repeat measures of body mass index (BMI) for 1528 US adolescents, we estimated GMMs that required variance–covariance constraints to attain convergence. We contrasted constrained models with and without an autocorrelation structure to assess the impact this had on the ideal number of latent classes, their size and composition. We also contrasted model options using simulations. When the GMM variance–covariance structure was constrained, a within-class autocorrelation structure emerged. When not modelled explicitly, this led to poorer model fit and models that differed substantially in the ideal number of latent classes, as well as class size and composition. Failure to carefully consider the random structure of data within a GMM framework may lead to erroneous model inferences, especially for outcomes with greater within-person than between-person homogeneity, such as BMI. It is crucial to reflect on the underlying data generation processes when building such models.

A 1/6th water physical model of a 140 tons gas-stirred steel ladle is used to evaluate mixing times (τm at 95% of chemical uniformity) in a two phase system without slag (air-water) and in a more realistic three phase system (air-water-oil) to simulate the argon-steel-slag system and quantify the effect of the slag layer on the mixing time. Slag layer is kept constant at 0.004 m. Mixing times are estimated through measured changes in pH due to the addition of a tracer (NaOH 1 M). The effect of the following variables on the mixing time is evaluated for a single injector: gas flow rate (7, 17 y 37 l/min) and the injector position (R/r= 0, 1/3, ½, 2/3 and 4/5). Experimental results obtained in this work show good agreement when compared against mixing time correlations reported by Mazumdar for the two phase air-water case (no slag considered). Another comparison is done using the new concept called “effective bath height” proposed by Barati, where the mixing time is a function of the size of the slag layer since this layer dissipates part of the total amount of stirring energy introduced into the ladle by the injection of gas. Agreement is not good in this case. Finally, an estimation of the percentage of the stirring energy dissipated by the slag is computed, including other factors that govern the dissipation of stirring energy. Percentage of energy dissipated by the slag is found to be between 2.7 to 12 % depending on the process conditions.

A computer-aided method for accurately carrying out the Chapman-Enskog expansion of the Boltzmann equation, including its inelastic variant, is presented and employed to derive a hydrodynamic description of a dilute binary mixture of smooth inelastic spheres. Constitutive relations, formally valid for all physical values of the coefficients of restitution, are calculated by carrying out the pertinent Chapman-Enskog expansion to sufficient high orders in the Sonine polynomials to ensure numerical convergence. The resulting hydrodynamic description is applied to the analysis of a vertically vibrated binary mixture of particles (under gravity) differing only in their respective coefficients of restitution. It is shown that even with this “minor”difference the mixture partly segregates, its steady state exhibiting a sandwich-like configuration.

This paper gives a stochastic representation in spectral terms for the absorption time T of a finite Markov chainwhich is irreducible and reversible outside the absorbing point.This yields quantitative informations on the parameters of a similar representation due to O'Cinneide for general chains admitting real eigenvalues.In the discrete time setting, if the underlying Dirichlet eigenvalues(namely the eigenvalues of the Markov transition operator restricted to the functions vanishing on the absorbing point)are nonnegative, we show that T is distributed as a mixture ofsums of independent geometric laws whose parameters are successiveDirichlet eigenvalues (starting from the smallest one). The mixture weights depend on the starting law.This result leads to a probabilistic interpretation of the spectrum,in terms of strong random times and local equilibria through a simple intertwining relation.Next this study is extended to the continuous time framework,wheregeometric laws have to be replaced by exponential distributions having the (opposite)Dirichlet eigenvalues of the generator as parameters.Returning to the discrete time setting we consider the influence ofnegative eigenvalues which are given another probabilistic meaning.These results generalize results of Karlin and McGregor and Keilson for birth and death chains.

Classical results for exchangeable systems of random variables are extended to multiclass systems satisfying a natural partial exchangeability assumption. It is proved that the conditional law of a finite multiclass system, given the value of the vector of the empirical measures of its classes, corresponds to independent uniform orderings of the samples within {each} class, and that a family of such systems converges in law {if and only if} the corresponding empirical measure vectors converge in law. As a corollary, convergence within {each} class to an infinite independent and identically distributed system implies asymptotic independence between {different} classes. A result implying the Hewitt-Savage 0-1 law is also extended.

Variance reduction has always been a central issue in Monte Carlo experiments. Population Monte Carlo can be used to this effect, in that a mixture of importance functions, called a D-kernel, can be iterativelyoptimized to achieve the minimum asymptotic variance for a function of interest among all possible mixtures.The implementation of this iterative scheme is illustrated for the computation of the price of a Europeanoption in the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model. A Central Limit theorem as well as moderate deviations are established for the D-kernel Population Monte Carlo methodology.
