Let A and G be finite groups and suppose that A acts via automorphisms on G with $(|A|, |G|)=1$. We study how certain conditions on the Sylow 2-subgroups of the fixed point subgroup of the action $C_G(A)$ may imply the non-simplicity or solubility of G.

Assume that $G$ is a finite group and $H$ is a 2-nilpotent Sylow tower Hall subgroup of $G$ such that if $x$ and $y$ are $G$-conjugate elements of $H\cap G^{\prime }$ of prime order or order 4, then $x$ and $y$ are $H$-conjugate. We prove that there exists a normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ such that $G=HN$ and $H\cap N=1$.

Let $G$ be a finite group. Let $\operatorname{cl}(G)$ be the set of conjugacy classes of $G$ and let $\operatorname{ecl}_{p}(G)$ be the largest integer such that $p^{\operatorname{ecl}_{p}(G)}$ divides $|C|$ for some $C\in \operatorname{cl}(G)$. We prove the following results. If $\operatorname{ecl}_{p}(G)=1$, then $|G:F(G)|_{p}\leq p^{4}$ if $p\geq 3$. Moreover, if $G$ is solvable, then $|G:F(G)|_{p}\leq p^{2}$.

We find conditions which imply that a saturated fusion system over a product of 2-groups splits as a product of fusion systems over the factors.

We develop a theory of 2-fusion systems of even characteristic, and use that theory to show that all S3-free saturated 2-fusion systems are constrained. This supplies a new proof of Glauberman's Theorem on S4-free groups and its various corollaries.

Many problems about local analysis in a finite group G reduce to a special case in which G has a large normal p-subgroup satisfying several restrictions. In 1983, R. Niles and G. Glauberman showed that every finite p-group S of nilpotence class at least 4 must have two characteristic subgroups S1 and S2 such that, whenever S is a Sylow p-subgroup of a group G as above, S1 or S2 is normal in G. In this paper, we prove a similar theorem with a more explicit choice of S1 and S2.

Let H ≤ K be subgroups of a group G. We say that H is strongly closed in K with respect to G if whenever ag ∈ K, where a ∈ H, g ∈ G, then ag ∈ H. In this paper, we investigate the structure of a group G under the assumption that every subgroup of order 2m (and 4 if m = 1) of a 2-Sylow subgroup S of G is strongly closed in S with respect to G. Some results related to 2-nilpotence and supersolvability of a group G are obtained. This is a complement to Guo and Wei (J. Group Theory13(2) (2010), 267–276).

Hypercentrally embedded subgroups of finite groups can be characterized in terms of permutability as those subgroups which permute with all pronormal subgroups of the group. Despite that, in general, hypercentrally embedded subgroups do not permute with the intersection of pronormal subgroups, in this paper we prove that they permute with certain relevant types of subgroups which can be described as intersections of pronormal subgroups. We prove that hypercentrally embedded subgroups permute with subgroups of prefrattini type, which are intersections of maximal subgroups, and with F-normalizers, for a saturated formation F. In the soluble universe, F-normalizers can be described as intersection of some pronormal subgroups of the group.

In this paper we describe the groups admitting a covering with Hall subgroups. We also determine the groups with a π1-Hall subgroup, where π1 is the connected component of the prime graph, containing the prime 2.
