Based on the second Gaia data release and spectroscopy from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data, we identified 23,582 halo stars kinematically. The halo streams in the solar neighborhood could be detected in the space of energy and angular momentum. We reshuffle the velocities of these stars to determine the significance of the substructure. Finally, we find 14 statistically significant substructures and several substructures are not reported by previous works. These structures may be the debris of dwarf galaxies accretion event and their dynamical and chemical information can help to understand the history of the Galaxy.

We describe the DR14 APOGEE-TGAS catalogue, a new SDSS value-added catalogue that provides precise astrophysical parameters, chemical abundances, astro-spectro- photometric distances and extinctions, as well as orbital parameters for ~30, 000 APOGEE-TGAS stars, among them ~5, 000 high-quality giant stars within 1 kpc.

Angle/action based distribution function (DF) models can be optimised based on how well they reproduce observations thus revealing the current matter distribution in the Milky Way. Gaia data combined with data from other surveys, e.g. the RAVE/TGAS sample, and its full selection function will greatly improve their accuracy.

The vast majority of stars will become white dwarfs at the end of the stellar life cycle. These remnants are precise cosmic clocks owing to their well constrained cooling rates. Gaia Data Release 2 is expected to discover hundreds of thousands of white dwarfs, which can then be observed spectroscopically with WEAVE and 4MOST. By employing spectroscopically derived atmospheric parameters combined with Gaia parallaxes, white dwarfs can constrain the stellar formation history in the early developing phases of the Milky Way, the initial mass function in the 1.5 to 8 M⊙ range, and the stellar mass loss as well as the state of planetary systems during the post main-sequence evolution.

In this work we present chemical abundances of heavy elements (Z>28) for a homogeneous sample of 1059 stars from HARPS planet search program. We also derive ages using parallaxes from Hipparcos and Gaia DR1 to compare the results. We study the [X/Fe] ratios for different populations and compare them with models of Galactic chemical evolution. We find that thick disk stars are chemically disjunt for Zn adn Eu. Moreover, the high-alpha metal-rich population presents an interesting behaviour, with clear overabundances of Cu and Zn and lower abundances of Y and Ba with respect to thin disk stars. Several abundance ratios present a significant correlation with age for chemically separated thin disk stars (regardless of their metallicity) but thick disk stars do not present that behaviour. Moreover, at supersolar metallicities the trends with age tend to be weaker for several elements.

The spatial distribution and kinematics of stars in the Milky Way are linked through the gravitational potential. Observations of the positions and velocities of stars can therefore be used to measure the mass distribution of the Milky Way. I review steady-state dynamical modeling approaches and illustrate their use in constraining the local matter distribution and the circular velocity curve from the kinematics of stellar tracers. In a few years, Gaia will increase the number of precise positions and velocities by multiple orders of magnitude. I describe some of the dynamical analyses that will be possible with the Gaia data and discuss some promising avenues for the optimal analysis of dynamical data.

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations can provide the positions of compact radio sources with an accuracy of order 50 micro-arcseconds. This is sufficient to measure the trigonometric parallax and proper motions of any object within 500 pc of the Sun to better than a few percent. Because they are magnetically active, young stars are often associated with compact radio emission detectable using VLBI techniques. Here we show how VLBI observations have already constrained the distance to the most often studied nearby regions of star formation (Taurus, Ophiuchus, Orion, etc.) and have started to provide information about their internal structure and kinematics. We will then briefly describe a large project, the ‘Gould's Belt Distances Survey,’ which has been designed to provide a detailed view of star formation in the solar neighborhood using VLBI observations.

Based on radial velocity data and Hipparcos proper motions, we present a new determination of the Galactocentric distance based on a purely kinematic model. We have selected three subgroups of Galactic thin-disk components (O–B5 stars, classical Cepheids and Galactic open clusters) to trace the local structure and kinematics of the Galactic disk. Adopting the approximation of axisymmetric circular rotation, we have derived the Sun's distance to the Galactic Center, R0 = 8.25 ± 0.79 kpc based on O–B5 stars, R0 = 7.98 ± 0.79 kpc based on Galactic Cepheids and R0 = 8.03 ± 0.70 kpc using open clusters, all of which are in excellent agreement with the current-best estimate of the Galactocentric distance.

Determination of trigonometric parallaxes is one of the very few direct methods available for measuring cosmic distances, and the only one capable of reaching beyond the Solar System. It is fundamental both to determine the intrinsic properties of astrophysical objects and as the first step on the cosmic distance ladder. Steady improvements of instruments and techniques have extended the applicability of the parallax method to ever greater distances. However, it is not correct to say that the method is independent of physical assumptions. This review covers ground-based optical techniques, from Bessel's time to the present, as well as space observations and radio interferometry. Some emphasis is put on the physical limitations of the method, in particular its sensitivity to source structure and photocentric variability on different timescales.

Intrinsic and induced planetary magnetospheres are the result of the transfer of energy and linear momentum between the solar wind and, respectively, the magnetic field and the atmospheres of solar system bodies. This transfer seems to be, however, more critical to the atmospheric evolution of unmagnetized objects such as Mars and Venus, as locally ionized planetary particles are accelerated by solar-wind induced electric fields, leading to atmospheric escape. The nature of the obstacle to the solar wind being different, intrinsic and induced magnetospheres respond differently to solar cycle changes in solar photon flux and solar wind properties. The influence of solar variability on planetary magnetospheres and its implications for atmospheric evolution based upon remote and in situ spacecraft measurements, and numerical simulations are discussed. In particular, the case of unmagnetized objects where non-thermal escape process might have played a role in their habitability conditions is considered.

Using a population number synthesis code with detailed binary evolution, we calculate the distribution of the number of Type Ia supernovae as a function of time after starburst. This is done for both main progenitor scenarios (single degenerate and double degenerate), but also with various evolutionary assumptions (such as mass transfer efficiency, angular momentum loss, and common envelope description). The comparison of these theoretically predicted delay time distributions with observations in elliptical galaxies then allows us to constrain the evolutionary scenarios and parameters. From the morphological shape of the distributions, we conclude that all supernovae Ia cannot be produced through the single degenerate scenario alone, with the best match being obtained when both scenarios contribute. Within the double degenerate scenario, most systems go through a phase of quasi-conservative, stable Roche lobe overflow. We propose stellar rotation as a possible solution for the underestimation of the absolute numbers of events predicted by many theoretical population synthesis studies. A brief comparison with these other studies is made, showing good correspondence under the nontrivial condition of equivalent assumptions. We also investigate the influence of different supernova Ia progenitors and evolutionary parameters on the theoretical distribution of the iron abundance of G-type dwarfs in the Galactic disk. These stars are good indicators of the entire chemical history of the Galaxy, and their predicted metallicity distribution can also be compared to the observed ones. This again limits the number of acceptable combinations of assumptions. Supporting previous results, the best correspondence is found in the case where both the single and double degenerate scenario contribute.

We use test-particle orbit integration with a realistic Milky Way (MW) potential to study the effect of the resonances of the Galactic bar and spiral arms on the velocity distribution of the Solar Neighbourhood and other positions of the disk. Our results show that spiral arms create abundant kinematic substructure and crowd stars into the region of the Hercules moving group in the velocity plane. Bar resonances can contribute to the origin of low-angular momentum moving groups like Arcturus. Particles in the predicted dark disk of the MW should be affected by the same resonances as stars, triggering dark-matter moving groups in the disk. Finally, we evaluate how this study will be advanced by upcoming Gaia data.

In recent years. we have spectroscopically observed thousands of counterparts of selected ROSAT bright sources in the sacy project (Search for Associations Containing Young stars). We demonstrated that hundreds of the young stars found this way belong to nearby young, loose associations, some detected only in sacy, with ages in the range from 5 to 100 Myr. For their ages, these associations show no trace of their primitive nurseries, which poses some difficulties as to their origins. Nevertheless, there are some associations clearly associated with young open clusters, such as the ϵ Cha association (6 Myr) with the η Cha cluster, and the Argus association with IC 2391 (40 Myr). There seem to exist also more subtle connections, such as the AB Dor association (75 Myr) with the Pleiades. Here, we present evidence of the connections of young associations to open clusters, to understand their origin and their possible insertion in the cluster infant-mortality and Gould Belt scenarios.

Star clusters have hierarchical patterns in space and time, suggesting formation processes in the densest regions of a turbulent interstellar medium. Clusters also have hierarchical substructure when they are young, which makes them all look like the inner mixed parts of a pervasive stellar hierarchy. Young field stars share this distribution, presumably because some of them came from dissolved clusters and others formed in a dispersed fashion in the same gas. The fraction of star formation that ends up in clusters is apparently not constant, but may increase with interstellar pressure. Hierarchical structure explains why stars form in clusters and why many of these clusters are self-bound. It also explains the cluster mass function. Halo globular clusters share many properties of disk clusters, including what appears to be an upper cluster cutoff mass. However, halo globulars are self-enriched and often connected with dwarf galaxy streams. The mass function of halo globulars could have initially been like the power-law mass function of disk clusters, but the halo globulars have lost their low-mass members. The reasons for this loss are not understood. It could have happened slowly over time as a result of cluster evaporation, or it could have happened early after cluster formation as a result of gas loss. The latter model explains best the observation that the globular cluster mass function has no radial gradient in galaxies.

We discuss the age of the stellar disks in the solar neighborhood. After reviewing the various methods for age dating, we discuss current estimates of the ages of both the thin- and the thick disks. We present preliminary results for kinematically-selected stars that belong to the thin- as well as the thick disk. All of these dwarf and sub-giant stars have been studied spectroscopically and we have derived both elemental abundances as well as ages for them. A general conclusion is that in the solar neighborhood, on average, the thick disk is older than the thin disk. However, we caution that the exclusion of stars with effective temperatures around 6500 K might result in a biased view of the full age distribution for the stars in the thick disk.

I list some questions and problems that have motivated this symposium, particularly with regard to single stars and low-mass stars.

We present ongoing parallax programs developed at the Bordeaux Observatory several years ago. We describe the necessary steps leading to sub-milliarcsecond accuracy of calculated parallax. We show the importance of global methods for accurate parallax determination.

We study the transition between the thick and thick disks using solar neighbourhood data, focusing in particular on the status of local metal-poor thin disk stars ([Fe/H]<−0.3 dex, [α/Fe]<0.1 dex). The orbital properties of these stars, which are responsible for the hiatus in metallicity between the two disks, suggest that they most likely originate from the outer Galactic thin disk. It implies that the transition between the two stellar populations at a solar galactocentric distance must have occurred at a metallicity of about −0.3 dex. Transition stars at this metallicity are in fact present in local samples and fill the gap in α-element between the thick and thin disks. These results imply that, at least from the local data, there is a clear evolutionary link between the thick and thin disks.

A new all-sky catalog of stars with proper motions μ > 0.15″ yr−1 is presented. The catalog is largely a product of the SUPERBLINK survey, a data-mining initiative in which the entire Digitized Sky Surveys are searched for moving stellar sources. Findings from earlier proper motions surveys are also incorporated. The new all-sky catalog supersedes the great historic proper motion catalogs assembled by W. J. Luyten (LHS, NLTT), and provides a virtually complete > 98% census of high proper motion stars down to magnitude R = 19.
