We started high-cadence monitoring observations of 6.7 GHz methanol masers from Dec. 2012 using Hitachi 32-m radio telescope (Yonekura et al.(2016). Observations have been conducted basically every day. On average, 13 hours of observations have been made per day, amounting to 4000–5000 hours per year. The cadence varies by sources: one observation in 1–50 days. In addition to already known 29 sources (Tanabe et al. 2023 and references therein), we have newly identified ∼20 sources with periodic flux variability. We have also detected 5 sources with sudden flux rises in 2019–2022, including G358.93–0.03 which was confirmed to be associated with the accretion burst.

Accretion disks are observed around young stellar objects such as T Tauri stars. In order to complete the star formation, particles in the disk need to loose angular momentum in order to be accreted into the central object. The magneto-rotational instability (MRI) is probably the mechanism responsible for a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence that leads to disk accretion, which implies the disk particles to be coupled with the magnetic filed lines. As the temperature in the disk is low, we considered, besides the viscous heating mechanism often included in the models by means of the α - prescription, the damping of Alfvén waves as an additional heating source. In particular, we show that the mechanism derived that couples the turbulent and non-linear damping mechanisms of Alfvén waves proved to be very efficient, generating temperatures almost one order of magnitude higher than those mechanisms considered independently.

We present Kitty, an unprecedented and near simultaneous flaring event in ten transitions (6 hydroxyl, 1 water and 3 methanol), that began on 1 January 2015 in the massive star-forming region NGC6334F located in the Cat’s Paw Nebula. The brightest components in each transition increased by factors of 20 to 70 in line with a factor of ~70 increase in dust emission luminosity for the source MM1. We also report the detection of only the fifth known 4.660 GHz hydroxyl maser and that it varied in a correlated fashion with 1.720, 6.031, and 6.035 GHz hydroxyl counterparts. We postulate that if Kitty, and two historical flares in 1965 & 1999, are accretion events and are caused by the successive passages of a secondary star disrupting the accretion disk, where the frequency of occurrence is cycling down at a rate of ~2.2, it is possible another event will occur in 2022.

We present the results of sub-millimetre observations on three periodic methanol maser sources. Our results indicate that there are geometric differences between some periodic methanol masers which have different variability profiles.

We present results from numerical simulations of expanding and colliding supershells. These large-scale spherical shocks, created by the combined feedback from several OB stars, are unstable to a number of hydrodynamical instabilities, so they quickly fragment into cold and highly structured clumps. A collision between two large shells can organize these small clumps into very filamentary structures, of tens of parsecs length and less than a parsec thick. In simulations where the flow of stellar material is followed with a tracer quantity, cold structures practically do not contain any enriched material from the OB associations at the time of their creation. In this context then, the clumps are created almost exclusively out of diffuse ISM material, containing almost no wind or supernova matter. Although the mechanism presented here is possibly not the only route for filament creation, this predicted property may help identify regions of sequential star formation.

Class I 44 GHz methanol masers are not as well-known, as common, or as bright as their more famous Class II cousins at 6.7 and 12.2 GHz. Nevertheless, the 44 GHz masers are commonly found in high-mass star forming regions. At times they appear to trace dynamically important phenomena; at other times they show no obvious link to the star formation process. Here, we summarize the major observational efforts to date, including both dedicated surveys and collateral observations. The principal results are presented, some that were expected, and others that were unexpected.

Results of multi-epoch VLBI observations toward water/SiO masers in Orion-KL are presented. We conducted high-resolution VLBI observations of water/SiO masers with VERA to probe the structure and the kinematics of the disk/outflow in Orion-KL. The VERA observations provide the positions and proper motions of masers features in Orion-KL with the highest accuracy ever observed. The results of water and SiO maser observations suggest that Source I is a massive YSO with an accretion disk and a collimated outflow.

The bright and narrow spectral line emission of masers is ideal for measuring the Zeeman-splitting as well as for determining the orientation of magnetic fields in 3-dimensions around massive protostars. Recently, polarization observations at milliarcsecond resolution of 6.7-GHz CH3OH masers have uniquely been able to resolve the morphology of magnetic fields close to massive protostars. The observations reveal that the magnetic fields are along outflows and/or on the surfaces of circumstellar tori. Here we present three different examples selected from a total number of 7 massive star-forming regions that were investigated at 6.7-GHz with the EVN in the last years.

Protoplanetary disks are ubiquitously observed around young solar-mass stars and are considered to be not only natural by-products of stellar evolution but also precursors of planet formation. If a forming star has close companions, the protoplanetary disk may be seriously influenced. It is important to consider this effect because most stars form as multiples. Thus, studies of protoplanetary disks in multiple systems are essential to describe the general processes of star and planet formation.

We present the direct image of an interacting binary protoplanetary system. We obtained an infrared image of a young multiple circumstellar disk system, SR24, with the Subaru 8.2-m Telescope. Both circumprimary and circumsecondary disks are clearly resolved with a 0.1 arcsecond resolution. The binary system exhibits a bridge of infrared emission connecting the two disks and a long spiral arm extending from the circumprimary disk. A spiral arm would suggest that the SR24 system rotates counter-clockwise. The orbital period of the binary is 15,000 yr. Numerical simulations reveal that the bridge corresponds to gas flow and a shock wave caused by the collision of gas rotating around the primary and secondary stars. The simulations also show that fresh material streams along the spiral arm, confirming the theoretical proposal that gas is replenished from a circum-multiple reservoir. These results reveal the mechanism of interacting protoplanetary disks in young multiple systems. Furthermore, our observations provide the first direct image that enables a comparison with theoretical models of mass accretion in binary systems. The observations of this binary system provide a great opportunity to test and refine theoretical models of star and planet formation in binary systems.

Forming stars emit a significant amount of radiation into their natal environment. While the importance of radiation feedback from high-mass stars is widely accepted, radiation has generally been ignored in simulations of low-mass star formation. I use ORION, an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) three-dimensional gravito-radiation-hydrodynamics code, to model low-mass star formation in a turbulent molecular cloud. I demonstrate that including radiation feedback has a profound effect on fragmentation and protostellar multiplicity. Although heating is mainly confined within the core envelope, it is sufficient to suppress disk fragmentation that would otherwise result in low-mass companions or brown dwarfs. As a consequence, turbulent fragmentation, not disk fragmentation, is likely the origin of low-mass binaries.

Star formation is such a huge problem, covering such a large range of physical scales and involving so many physical processes, that the results of simulations should always be taken with care.

A possible intimate connection between astrophysical masers in regions of star formation and turbulence has been a subject of increasing interest during the last two decades. Evidence for the presence of a residual turbulent component in the observed expansion and rotation of clusters of water masers was shown by multi-epoch VLBI maps. The water maser hot spots demonstrate self-similar (fractal) spatial clustering and a power-law two-point velocity correlation function similar to that of incompressible turbulence – with the power index close to “Kolmogorov's” 1/3. The possibility of using maser sources for studying supersonic turbulence critically depends on whether the observed hot spots are an integral effect of radiative transfer over a large distance, comparable to the size of the whole maser source, or whether they are compact local physical objects, such as small random shocks, in which the mechanical energy of turbulence dissipates. If the latter hypothesis is correct, the compact and bright maser hot spots may be excellent local probes of the spatial and kinematic structure of supersonic turbulence. Observational and theoretical arguments for and against these hypotheses are discussed and the first quantitative results about supersonic turbulence obtained by statistical analysis of maser sources are presented in this review.

In this work we report the most sensitive water maser survey towards Bok globules to date, using NASA's 70 m antenna in Robledo de Chavela (Spain). We observed 207 positions within the Clemens & Barvainis catalog that show indications of possible star formation or with a high probability of harboring a young stellar object. With this survey we have increased the number of Bok globules known to present water maser emission from three to nine. We have complemented these results with interferometric high-angular resolution observations towards some of our detections.

Class I methanol masers are found near regions of high-mass star formation and are pumped by collisions. Some indication of long-term variability in these masers has previously been reported (Kurtz et al. 2004). Here we will present evidence for variations in the intensity of the Class I methanol masers at 44 GHz on much shorter timescales. We present preliminary results of the observation of the 44 GHz Class I methanol transition toward sources in the DR21 region that indicates variability on timescales of days to possibly hours.

The signatures of intermittent dissipation of turbulent energy have been sought in the translucent environment of a low-mass dense core. Molecular line observations reveal a network of narrow filamentary structures, found on statistical grounds to be the locus of the largest velocity shears. Three independent properties of these structures make them the plausible sites of intermittent dissipation of turbulence: (1) gas there is warmer and more diluted than average, (2) it bears the signatures of a non-equilibrium chemistry triggered by impulsive heating due to turbulence dissipation, and (3) the power that these structures radiate in the gas cooling lines (mostly H2) is so large that it balances the total energy injection rate of the turbulent cascade, for a volume filling factor of only a few percents, consistent with other observations in the Solar Neighborhood. These filamentary structures may act as tiny seeds of gas condensation in diffuse molecular gas. They do not exhibit the properties of steady-state low-velocity magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) shocks, as presently modelled.

Detailed modelling of individual protostellar condensations is important to test the various theories. Here we present comparisons between strongly induced collapse models with one young class-0 object, IRAS4A, in the Perseus cloud and one prestellar cloud observed in the Coalsack molecular cloud.

We summarize recent numerical results on the control of the star formation efficiency (SFE), addressing the effects of turbulence and the magnetic field strength. In closed-box numerical simulations, the effect of the turbulent Mach number depends on whether the turbulence is driven or decaying: In driven regimes, increasing with all other parameters fixed decreases the SFE, while in decaying regimes the converse is true. The efficiencies in non-magnetic cases for realistic Mach numbers 10 are somewhat too high compared to observed values. Including the magnetic field can bring the SFE down to levels consistent with observations, but the intensity of the magnetic field necessary to accomplish this depends again on whether the turbulence is driven or decaying. In this kind of simulations, a lifetime of the molecular cloud (MC) needs to be assumed, being typically a few free-fall times. Further progress requires determining the true nature of the turbulence driving and the lifetimes of the clouds. Simulations of MC formation by large-scale compressions in the warm neutral medium (WNM) show that the generation of the clouds' initial turbulence is built into the accumulation process that forms them, and that the turbulence is driven for as long as accumulation process lasts, producing realistic velocity dispersions and also thermal pressures in excess of the mean WNM value. In simulations including self-gravity, but neglecting the magnetic field and stellar energy feedback, the clouds never reach an equilibrium state, but rather evolve secularly, increasing their mass and gravitational energy until they engage in generalized gravitational collapse. However, local collapse events begin midways through this process, and produce enough stellar objects to disperse the cloud or at least halt its collapse before the latter is completed. Simulations of this kind including the missing physical ingredients should contribute to a final resolution of the MC lifetime and the origin of the low SFE problems.

We are conducting a survey of several regions of high-mass star formation to assess their content and structure. The observations include spitzer observations, ground-based optical and near-IR imaging surveys, and optical and IR spectra of objects and locations in the molecular clouds. The goal of the survey is to gain a better understanding of the processes involved in high mass star formation by determining the characteristics of the stars detected in these regions and investigating the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) environment in which these stars form. In this contribution, we present results on the identification and spatial analysis of young stars in three clusters, W5/AFGL 4029, S255, and S235. First we show how the IRAC data are used to roughly segregate young stars according to their mid-infrared colors, into two groups corresponding the SED class I and class II young stellar objects. Then using the IRAC data in combination with 2MASS, we show how more young stars can be identified. Finally, we examine the spatial distributions of young stars in these clusters and find a range of morphologies and of peak surface densities.

We present initial results from a survey of the Orion A and B molecular clouds made with the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. This survey encompasses a total of 5.6 square degrees with the sensitivity to detect objects below the hydrogen burning limit at an age of 1 Myr. These observations cover a number of known star forming regions, from the massive star forming clusters in the Orion Nebula and NGC 2024, to small groups of low mass stars in the L1641. We combine the IRAC photometry with photometry from the 2MASS point source catalog and use the resulting seven band data to identify stars with infrared excesses due to dusty disks and envelopes. Using the presence of an infrared excess as an indicator of youth, we show the distribution of young stars and protostars in the two molecular clouds. We find that roughly half of the stars are found in dense clusters surrounding the two regions of recent massive star formation in the Orion clouds, NGC 2024 and the Orion Nebula.

We present numerical investigations into the formation of massive stars from turbulent cores of density gradient $\rho \propto r^{-1.5}$. The results of five hydrodynamical simulations are described, following the collapse of the core, fragmentation and the formation of small clusters of protostars. We generate two different initial turbulent velocity fields corresponding to power-law spectra $P \propto k^{-4}$ and $P \propto k^{-3.5}$, and apply two different initial core radii. Calculations are included for both completely isothermal collapse, and a non-isothermal equation of state above a critical density ($10^{-14}$gcm$^{-3}$). Our calculations reveal the preference of fragmentation over monolithic star formation in turbulent cores. Fragmentation was prevalent in all the isothermal cases. Although disc fragmentation was largely suppressed in the non-isothermal runs due to the small dynamic range between the initial density and the critical density, our results show that some fragmentation still persisted. This is inconsistent with previous suggestions that turbulent cores result in the formation of a single massive star. We conclude that turbulence cannot be measured as an isotropic pressure term.
