Data exchange, the problem of transferring data from a source schema to a target schema, has been studied for several years. The semantics of answering positive queries over the target schema has been defined in early work, but little attention has been paid to more general queries. A few proposals of semantics for more general queries exist but they either do not properly extend the standard semantics under positive queries, giving rise to counterintuitive answers, or they make query answering undecidable even for the most important data exchange settings, for example, with weakly-acyclic dependencies.

The goal of this paper is to provide a new semantics for data exchange that is able to deal with general queries. At the same time, we want our semantics to coincide with the classical one when focusing on positive queries, and to not trade-off too much in terms of complexity of query answering. We show that query answering is undecidable in general under the new semantics, but it is $\text{co}\text{NP}\text{-complete}$ when the dependencies are weakly-acyclic. Moreover, in the latter case, we show that exact answers under our semantics can be computed by means of logic programs with choice, thus exploiting existing efficient systems. For more efficient computations, we also show that our semantics allows for the construction of a representative target instance, similar in spirit to a universal solution, that can be exploited for computing approximate answers in polynomial time.

The new Solvency II Directive and the upcoming IFRS 17 regime bring significant changes to current reporting of insurance entities, and particularly in relation to valuation of insurance liabilities. Insurers will be required to valuate their insurance liabilities on a risk-adjusted basis to allow for uncertainty inherent in cash flows that arise from the liability of insurance contracts. Whilst most European-based insurers are expected to adopt the Cost of Capital approach to calculate reserve risk margin — the risk adjustment method commonly agreed under Solvency II and IFRS 17, there is one additional requirement of IFRS 17 to also disclose confidence level of the risk margin.

Given there is no specific guidance on the calculation of confidence level, the purpose of this paper is to explore and examine practical ways of estimating the risk margin confidence level measured by Probability of Sufficiency (PoS). The paper provides some practical approximation formulae that would allow one to quickly estimate the implied PoS of Solvency II risk margin for a given non-life insurance liability, the risk profile of which is specified by the type and characteristics of the liability (e.g. type/nature of business, liability duration and convexity, etc.), which, in turn, are associated with

• • the level of variability measured by Coefficient of Variation (CoV);

• • the degree of Skewness per unit of CoV; and

• • the degree of Kurtosis per unit of CoV2.

This paper is concerned with the construction of local observers for nonlinear systems without inputs, satisfying an observability rank condition. The aim of this study is, first, to define an homogeneous approximation that keeps the observability property unchanged at the origin. This approximation is further used in the synthesis of a local observer which is proven to be locally convergent for Lyapunov-stable systems. We compare the performance of the homogeneous approximation observer with the classical linear approximation observer on an example.

The numerical analysis of quasi-birth-and-death processes rests on the resolution of a matrix-quadratic equation for which efficient algorithms are known when the matrices have finite order, that is, when the number of phases is finite. In this paper we consider the case of infinitely many phases from the point of view of theoretical convergence of truncation and augmentation schemes, and we develop four different methods. Two methods rely on forced transitions to the boundary. In one of these methods, the transitions occur as a result of the truncation itself, while in the other method, they are artificially introduced so that the augmentation may be chosen to be as natural as possible. Two other methods rely on forced transitions within the same level. We conclude with a brief numerical illustration.

This paper is concerned with presenting guidelines to aide in the selection of the appropriate network architecture for back-propagation neural networks used as approximators. In particular, its goal is to indicate under what circumstances neural networks should have two hidden layers and under what circumstances they should have one hidden layer. Networks with one and with two hidden layers were used to approximate numerous test functions. Guidelines were developed from the results of these investigations.

Owen's multilinear extension (MLE) of a game is a very important tool in game theory and particularly in the field of simple games. Among other applications it serves to efficiently compute several solution concepts. In this paper we provide bounds for the MLE. Apart from its self-contained theoretical interest, the bounds offer the means in voting system studies of approximating the probability that a proposal is approved in a particular simple game having a complex component arrangement. The practical interest of the bounds is that they can be useful for simple games having a tedious MLE to evaluate exactly, but whose minimal winning coalitions and minimal blocking coalitions can be determined by inspection. Such simple games are quite numerous.

We consider the Voronoi tessellation of Euclidean space that is generated by an inhomogeneous Poisson point process whose intensity takes different constant values on sets of some finite partition of the space. Considering the Voronoi cells as marks associated with points of the point process, we prove that the intensity measure (mean measure) of the marked Poisson point process admits an approximate decomposition formula. The true value is approximated by a mixture of respective intensity measures for homogeneous models, while the explicit upper bound for the remainder term can be computed numerically for a large class of practical examples. By the Campbell formula, analogous approximate decompositions are deduced for the Palm distributions of individual cells. This approach makes possible the analysis of a wide class of inhomogeneous-Poisson Voronoi tessellations, by means of formulae and estimates already established for homogeneous cases. Our analysis applies also to the Poisson process modulated by an independent stationary random partition, in which case the error of the approximation of the double-stochastic-Poisson Voronoi tessellation depends on some integrated linear contact distribution functions of the boundaries of the partition elements.

In this paper, a graph partitioning problem that arises in the design ofSONET/SDH networks is defined and formalized. Approximation algorithms withperformance guarantees are presented. To solve this problem efficiently inpractice, fast greedy algorithms and a tabu-search method are proposed andanalyzed by means of an experimental study.

When the premium rate is a positive absolute constant throughout the time period of observation and the safety loading of the insurance business is positive, a classical result of collective risk theory claims that probabilities of ultimate ruin ψ(u) and of ruin within finite time ψ(t,u) decrease as eϰu with a constant ϰ>0, as the initial risk reserve u increases. This paper establishes uniform approximations to ψ(t,u) with slower rates of decrease when the premium rate depends on u in such a way that the safety loading decreases to zero as u→∞.

A recent study on the GI/G/1 queue derives the Maclaurin series for the moments of the waiting time and the delay to respect to some parameters. By the same approach, we obtain an identity on the moments of the transient delay of the M/G/1 queue. This identity allows us to understand the transient behavior of the process better. We apply the identity with other established results to study convergence rate and stochastic concavity of the transient delay process, and to derive bounds and approximations of the moments. Our approximation and bound both have simple closed forms and are asymptotically exact as either the traffic intensity goes to zero or the process approaches stationarity. Performance of the approximation of several M/G/1 queues is illustrated by numerical experiments. It is interesting to note that our results can also help to gain variance reduction in simulation.

Let P be the transition matrix of a positive recurrent Markov chain on the integers, with invariant distribution π. If (n)P denotes the n x n ‘northwest truncation’ of P, it is known that approximations to π(j)/π(0) can be constructed from (n)P, but these are known to converge to the probability distribution itself in special cases only. We show that such convergence always occurs for three further general classes of chains, geometrically ergodic chains, stochastically monotone chains, and those dominated by stochastically monotone chains. We show that all ‘finite’ perturbations of stochastically monotone chains can be considered to be dominated by such chains, and thus the results hold for a much wider class than is first apparent. In the cases of uniformly ergodic chains, and chains dominated by irreducible stochastically monotone chains, we find practical bounds on the accuracy of the approximations.

In an earlier note the present author deduced bounds for the approximation error of stop loss premiums when the aggregate claims distribution is calculated by a method introduced by Bertram. From the error bounds of the stop loss premiums we deduced bounds for the approximation error of the cumulative distribution and the discrete density of the aggregate claims. In the present note we shall improve the bounds for the cumulative distribution and the discrete density.

Approximation in the spirit of Glaz and Johnson (1984), (1986) and Samuel-Cahn (1983) are given for Pr(τm > n), E(τ m), and σ (τ m),the standard deviation of τm.

Multiple channel queues with Poisson arrivals, exponential service distributions, and finite capacity are studied. A customer who finds the system at capacity either leaves the system for ever or may return to try again after an exponentially distributed time. Steady state probabilities are approximated by assuming that the returning customers see time averages. The approximation is shown to result in an upper bound on system performance.

A relation between the distributions of the workload of an arbitrary server and the waiting time is obtained for a GI/G/s queue in steady state. An expression for the total workload of the system (total unprocessed work) is also found. Several well-known results emerge as special cases. Various useful relations, for instance bounds and approximations for the mean waiting time, are also given.

A queueing situation often encountered in practice is that in which customers wait for service for a limited time only and leave the system if not served during that time. This paper considers a single-server queueing system with Poisson input and general service times, where a customer becomes a lost customer when his service has not begun within a fixed time after his arrival. For performance measures like the fraction of customers who are lost and the average delay in queue of a customer we obtain exact and approximate results that are useful for practical applications.

A revealing alternate proof is provided for the Iglehart (1965), (1973)–Borovkov (1967) heavy-traffic limit theorem for GI/G/s queues. This kind of heavy traffic is obtained by considering a sequence of GI/G/s systems with the numbers of servers and the arrival rates going to ∞ while the service-time distributions are held fixed. The theorem establishes convergence to a Gaussian process, which in general is not Markov, for an appropriate normalization of the sequence of stochastic processes representing the number of customers in service at arbitrary times. The key idea in the new proof is to consider service-time distributions that are randomly stopped sums of exponential phases, and then work with the discrete-time vector-valued Markov chain representing the number of customers in each phase of service at arrival epochs. It is then easy to show that this sequence of Markov chains converges to a multivariate O–U (Ornstein–Uhlenbeck) diffusion process by applying simple criteria in Stroock and Varadhan (1979). The Iglehart–Borovkov limit for these special service-time distributions is the sum of the components of this multivariate O–U process. Heavy-traffic convergence is also established for the steady-state distributions of GI/M/s queues under the same conditions by exploiting stochastic-order properties.

For the multi-server queue with Poisson arrivals and general service times we present various approximations for the steady-state probabilities of the queue size. These approximations are computed from numerically stable recursion schemes which can be easily applied in practice. Numerical experience reveals that the approximations are very accurate with errors typically below 5%. For the delay probability the various approximations result either into the widely used Erlang delay probability or into a new approximation which improves in many cases the Erlang delay probability approximation. Also for the mean queue size we find a new approximation that turns out to be a good approximation for all values of the queueing parameters including the coefficient of variation of the service time.
