We consider the attractor $\Lambda $ of a piecewise contracting map f defined on a compact interval. If f is injective, we show that it is possible to estimate the topological entropy of f (according to Bowen’s formula) and the Hausdorff dimension of $\Lambda $ via the complexity associated with the orbits of the system. Specifically, we prove that both numbers are zero.

The invariant Galton–Watson (IGW) tree measures are a one-parameter family of critical Galton–Watson measures invariant with respect to a large class of tree reduction operations. Such operations include the generalized dynamical pruning (also known as hereditary reduction in a real tree setting) that eliminates descendant subtrees according to the value of an arbitrary subtree function that is monotone nondecreasing with respect to an isometry-induced partial tree order. We show that, under a mild regularity condition, the IGW measures are attractors of arbitrary critical Galton–Watson measures with respect to the generalized dynamical pruning. We also derive the distributions of height, length, and size of the IGW trees.

In this paper we focus on compacta $K \subseteq \mathbb {R}^3$ which possess a neighbourhood basis that consists of nested solid tori $T_i$. We call these sets toroidal. Making use of the classical notion of the geometric index of a curve inside a torus, we introduce the self-geometric index of a toroidal set K, which roughly captures how each torus $T_{i+1}$ winds inside the previous $T_i$ as $i \rightarrow +\infty $. We then use this index to obtain some results about the realizability of toroidal sets as attractors for homeomorphisms of $\mathbb {R}^3$.

We define fractal interpolation on unbounded domains for a certain class of topological spaces and construct local fractal functions. In addition, we derive some properties of these local fractal functions, consider their tensor products, and give conditions for local fractal functions on unbounded domains to be elements of Bochner–Lebesgue spaces.

The paper proposes a scenario of origin and emerging of intelligent life in Universe based upon the mathematical discovery of a new class of dynamical systems described by ordinary differential equation (ODE) coupled with their Liouville equation. These systems called self-controlled since the role of actuators is played by the probability produced by the Liouville equation. Following the Madelung equation that belongs to this class, non-Newtonian and quantum-like properties such as randomness, entanglement and probability interference typical for quantum systems have been described. At the same time, these systems expose properties of livings: decomposition into motor and mental dynamics, the capability of self-identification and self-awareness, as well as self-supervision. But the most surprising discovery is the existence of a special sub-class, in which the dynamical systems can violate the second law of thermodynamics, and that makes them different from both Newtonian and quantum physics. This sub-class should be associated with intelligent livings due to capability to move from disorder to order without external help. Based upon the mathematical discovery described above, one can assume that there are good chances that similar dynamical systems representing intelligent livings exist in real physical world. This provides a reason for a ‘rehabilitation’ of the Maxwell demon and put it into physics of intelligent systems. Indeed, the Maxwell demon is implemented by the feedback from the Liouville equation to the original ODE, while this feedback is capable to rearrange the probability distribution against the second law of thermodynamics. In addition to that, the same feedback removes the entropy paradox by explaining high order in our surrounding by ‘intelligent life support’. Two-steps transition: from the Newtonian physics to the linear model of life, and from the latter to the model of intelligent life are analysed. The first transition is triggered by the Hadamard instability of the Newtonian physics with respect to small random disturbances in linear terms of the Liouville feedback. The second transition is triggered by instability of linear model of life with respect to small random disturbances of non-linear terms of Liouville feedback. This transition could be implemented by such physical phenomena as shock waves or negative diffusion in probability space. Both transitions can be associated with catastrophe theory, in which sudden shifts in behaviour arises from small changes in parameters of the model. In view of the proposed model, possible competition between artificial and human intelligence are discussed.

The oriented movement of biological cells or organisms in response to a chemical gradientis called chemotaxis. The most interesting situation related to self-organizationphenomenon takes place when the cells detect and response to a chemical which is secretedby themselves. Since pioneering works of Patlak (1953) and Keller and Segel (1970) manyparticularized models have been proposed to describe the aggregation phase of thisprocess. Most of efforts were concentrated, so far, on mathematical models in which theformation of aggregate is interpreted as finite time blow-up of cell density. In recentlyproposed models cells are no more treated as point masses and their finite volume isaccounted for. Thus, arbitrary high cell densities are precluded in such description and athreshold value for cells density is a priori assumed. Different modelingapproaches based on this assumption lead to a class of quasilinear parabolic systems withstrong nonlinearities including degenerate or singular diffusion. We give a survey ofanalytical results on the existence and uniqueness of global-in-time solutions, theirconvergence to stationary states and on a possibility of reaching the density threshold bya solution. Unsolved problems are pointed as well.

Cet article propose d'analyser l'usinabilité en tournage d'un acier martensitique en fonction de la vitesse de coupe par observation topographique de la surface. Nous décrivons d'abord une méthodologie pour chercher le paramètre de rugosité le plus pertinent afin de caractériser l'influence de la vitesse de coupe sur la topographie de la surface obtenue. La moyenne des pentes du profil permet d'estimer une vitesse critique qui correspond à une transition de régime dans le mode d'usinage. Elle met également en évidence l'influence de la vitesse de coupe à l'intérieur de chacun de ces deux régimes, ce qu'un critère plus conventionnel tel que le Ra ne permet pas de différencier. Dans une deuxième partie de cette étude, l'usinabilité est analysée en utilisant la théorie du chaos. Partant de la topographie de la surface usinée, nous développons une méthode originale pour construire un attracteur qui s'avère être bidimensionnel. La construction de cet attracteur résulte de deux fonctions : la première caractérise l'effet de l'écrouissage dû à la coupe et la seconde l'effet de l'adoucissement thermique. À basse vitesse de coupe, ces deux mécanismes deviennent intimement liés et l'attracteur possède un point fixe : la coupe s'effectue par écrouissage généralisé. Au-delà d'une vitesse critique, l'attracteur présente deux états indiquant l'apparition d'une instabilité de coupe. Deux régimes  se succèdent : l'écrouissage par cisaillement localisé puis l'adoucissement causé par l'élévation de température. Cette instabilité est confirmée par une augmentation de la dimension fractale avec la vitesse de coupe du profil reconstruit d'après l'attracteur.

The problem of finite-dimensional asymptotics of infinite-dimensional dynamicsystems is studied. A non-linear kinetic system with conservation of supports for distributions has generically finite-dimensional asymptotics. Such systems are apparent in many areas of biology, physics (the theory of parametric wave interaction), chemistry and economics. This conservation of support has a biological interpretation: inheritance. The finite-dimensional asymptotics demonstrates effects of “natural” selection. Estimations of the asymptotic dimension are presented. After some initial time, solution of a kinetic equation with conservation of support becomes a finite set of narrow peaks that become increasingly narrow over time and move increasingly slowly. It is possible that these peaks do nottend to fixed positions, and the path covered tends to infinity as t $\to$ ∞. The drift equationsfor peak motion are obtained. Various types of distribution stability are studied: internalstability (stability with respect to perturbations that do not extend the support), externalstability or uninvadability (stability with respect to strongly small perturbations that extendthe support), and stable realizability (stability with respect to small shifts and extensions ofthe density peaks). Models of self-synchronization of cell division are studied, as an exampleof selection in systems with additional symmetry. Appropriate construction of the notionof typicalness in infinite-dimensional space is discussed, and the notion of “completely thin”sets is introduced.

Chaos theory has been seen as an efficient tool for studying the turbulent flow, the findings of attractor were also important and made in the study to investigate the wake flow behind the bluff body. Here, the fractal dimension value would then be found by Hurst analysis. According to the results found, the Hurst empirical formula derived by the self-similar laceration of vortex plane would be applied by self-similar property to decide the band of the frequency variations in the vortex shedding process. The three kinds of flow mode with their individual attractors and characteristics could be decomposed and shown as following: self-similar laceration, energy input and white noise band. Finally, the energy ratio for the three kinds of flow mode had been confirmed. Hence, these findings would be helpful to further study the wake flow in the vortex shedding process.

A mechanism that permits the separation and concentration of particles in natural systems is proposed. According to the mechanism, the particles in an aquifer are moved by an alternating flow of ground water. The retardation factor oscillates in synchronism with the alternating water flow. The retardation factor or the flow depend on the position in the aquifer (the particle velocity is u=v/R, where v is the water velocity and R is the retardation factor). The alternating flow is induced by tides, geysers or periodic rains. The alternating water flow produces temperature and water composition oscillations in the aquifer. Moreover, the alternating flow is caused by pressure oscillations: therefore, the retardation factor (which depends on pressure, temperature and water composition) oscillates. The dependence of the retardation factor on position is due to the inhomogeneity of the aquifer medium or to the position dependence of temperature, composition or pressure. Different particles may be concentrated at different places in the aquifer or in different aquifers. The particle concentration and the time necessary for concentration are estimated. The particles may be atoms, molecules, colloids or microorganisms. Such a mechanism may have played a role in chemical evolution.

This paper is the first part of a two-part survey reviewing some basic concepts and methods of the modern theory of dynamical systems. The survey is introduced by a preliminary discussion of the relevance of nonlinear dynamics and chaos for economics. We then discuss the dynamic behavior of nonlinear systems of difference and differential equations such as those commonly employed in the analysis of economically motivated models. Part I of the survey focuses on the geometrical properties of orbits. In particular, we discuss the notion of attractor and the different types of attractors generated by discrete- and continuous-time dynamical systems, such as fixed and periodic points, limit cycles, quasiperiodic and chaotic attractors. The notions of (noninteger) fractal dimension and Lyapunov characteristic exponent also are explained, as well as the main routes to chaos.
