Residual feed intake (RFI) is an alternative measure of feed efficiency (FE) and is calculated as the difference between actual and expected feed intake. The biological mechanisms underlying animal-to-animal variation in FE are not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the digestive ability of beef cows selected for RFI divergence as heifers, using two contrasted diets. Fifteen 4-year-old beef cows were selected from a total of 69 heifers based on their RFI following the feedlot test. The selected heifers were ranked into high-RFI (+ 1.02 ± 0.28, n = 8) and low-RFI (−0.73 ± 0.28, n = 7), and a digestibility trial was performed after their first lactation. Both RFI groups were offered two different diets: 100% hay or a fattening diet which consisted of a DM basis of 67% whole-plant maize silage and 33% high starch concentrates over four experimental periods (two per diet). A diet effect was observed on feed intake and apparent digestibility, whereas no diet × RFI interaction was detected (P > 0.05). Intake and apparent digestibility were higher in cows fed the fattening diet than in those fed the hay diet (P < 0.0001). DM intake (DMI) and organic matter apparent digestibility (OMd) were repeatable and positively correlated between the two subsequent periods of measurements. For the hay and fattening diets, the repeatability between periods was r = 0.71 and r = 0.73 for DMI and r = 0.87 and r = 0.48 for OMd, respectively. Moreover, both intake (r = 0.55) and OMd (r = 0.54) were positively correlated (P < 0.05) between the hay and fattening diets. Significant differences between beef cows selected for divergence in RFI as heifers were observed for digestive traits (P < 0.05), DM and organic matter (OM) apparent digestibility being higher for low-RFI cows. Overall, this study showed that apparent digestibility contributes to between-animal variation in FE in beef cows.

Noy-Meir's simple but insightful model of grazing-system dynamics was used to draw broader inferences from empirical data generated by a 17-year field trial with beef cattle grazing a Mediterranean grassland in northern Israel. After calibration of its parameters against the field results, the model predictions were tested against an independent set of data obtained from the study site; they were within acceptable deviations from the inherently noisy field data. The calibrated model was used to analyse the effects of changes to two key grazing-management factors – stocking density and early-season grazing deferment – on biomass dynamics and forage consumption. The simulated results were used to calculate forage deficits and supplementary feed requirements for optimum herd performance during the growth (‘green’) season and throughout the year. The results revealed a critical stocking density of 0.7 Animal Units (AU)/ha, above which early-season deferment reduced the amount of supplementary feed required to maintain the optimum production of the herd. Optimum stocking is higher when the grassland is used mainly in the highly nutritious green season. Responses of the strongly seasonal Mediterranean grassland to the interaction between stocking density and early-season grazing deferment were expressed by a calibrated model, in terms that determine the efficiency of forage supplementation of the herd during the green season and throughout the year.

A reproductively efficient beef cow herd is fundamental to meeting the protein and specifically, red meat demand of an ever increasing global population. However, attaining a high level of reproductive efficiency is underpinned by producers being cognisant of and achieving many key targets throughout the production cycle and requires significant technical competency. The lifetime productivity of the beef bred female commences from the onset of puberty and will be dictated by subsequent critical events including age at first calving, duration of the postpartum interval for each successive calving, conception and pregnancy rate and ultimately manifested as length of intercalving intervals and number of calves weaned over her lifetime. Puberty in heifers is a consequence of the interactive effects of genetics and both pre- and post-weaning nutrition. Early onset of puberty is essential to achieving the first main reproductive target for beef cow herds; first calving at 2 years of age. In calved heifers and mature cows, the onset of ovarian activity, postpartum is a key event dictating the calving interval. Again, this will be the product mainly of prepartum nutrition, manifested through body condition and the strength of the maternal bond between cow and calf, though there is increasing evidence of a modest genetic influence on this trait. Following the initiation of postpartum ovarian cyclicity, conception and subsequent pregnancy rate is generally a function of bull fertility in natural service herds and heat detection and timing of insemination in herds bred through artificial insemination. Cows and heifers should be maintained on a steady plane of nutrition during the breeding season, but the contribution of significant excesses or deficiencies of nutrients including protein and trace elements is likely to be minor where adequate pasture is available. While, increased efforts are being made internationally to genetically identify and select for more reproductively efficient beef cows, this is a more long-term strategy and will not replace the need for a high level of technical efficiency and management practice at farm level.

There is a variable anoestrous period following parturition in the cow. Follicular growth generally resumes within 7 to 10 days in the majority of cows associated with a transient FSH rise that occurs within 3 to 5 days of parturition. Dairy cows that are not nutritionally stressed generally ovulate their first postpartum dominant follicle (~15 days), whereas beef suckler cows in good body condition normally have a mean of 3.2±0.2 dominant follicles (~30 days) to first ovulation; moreover, beef cows in poor body condition have a mean of 10.6±1.2 dominant follicles (~70 to 100 days) to first ovulation. The lack of ovulation of dominant follicles during the postpartum period is associated with infrequent LH pulses, with both maternal–offspring bonding and low body condition score (BCS) at calving being implicated as the predominant causes of delayed resumption of cyclicity in nursed beef cows. In dairy cows, the normal pattern of early resumption of ovulation may be delayed in high-yielding Holstein type cows generally owing to the effects of severe negative energy balance, dystocia, retained placental membranes and uterine infections. First ovulation, in both dairy and beef cows, is generally silent (i.e., no behavioural oestrus) and followed by a short inter-ovulatory interval (>70%). The key to optimizing the resumption of ovulation in both beef and dairy cows is appropriate pre-calving nutrition and management so that cows calve down in optimal body condition (BCS; 2.75 to 3.0) with postpartum body condition loss restricted to <0.5 BCS units.

Milk intake data were collected at 4-week intervals from Belgian Blue double-muscled (BBDM) suckling calves up to 16 weeks after birth. Dams were fed at 100%, 90%, 80% or 70% of their energy requirements during a 140-day indoor period from the beginning of December to the end of April (restriction period). Afterwards, cows were turned out on pasture (re-alimentation period). Mean calving date was 3 June, but parturitions were spread over the year. A total of 521 individual milk intake (IMI) and 120 average daily milk intake (AMI, mean of IMI) records were collected. IMI amounted to 7.0 ± 2.2 kg/day and was not affected by energy level during the indoor period. It was highest in May and June. Calves born out of multiparous cows consumed more milk than those born out of primiparous cows (7.4 v. 6.2 kg per day; P = 0.001), while intake tended to be higher in female than in male calves (7.2 v. 6.8 kg per day; P = 0.044). Dam age at calving, parity, post partum weight and body condition were only weakly correlated with AMI (r ⩽ 0.4). AMI was correlated with pre-weaning live-weight gain (r = 0.807) and weaning weight (r = 0.783), with a slightly higher correlation for male than for female calves. Daily live-weight gain during the suckling period was increased by 79 g per extra kg daily milk intake on average, and by 86 and 74 g, respectively, for male and female calves. Calf solid feed intake was low, even when milk intake was low. In terms of net energy intake, milk was only substituted for solid feed by 29%. It can be concluded from the calf intake that milk production in BBDM cows is comparable with that of cows from other beef breeds, but its variation is considerable, complicating an accurate estimation.

Data from 2032 Uruguayan Aberdeen Angus cows under extensive management and recording practices were analysed with Bayesian threshold-liability sire models, to assess genetic variability in calving success (CS), defined as a different binary trait for each of the second (CS2), third (CS3) and fourth (CS4) calving opportunities. Sire (herd) variances ranged from 0.08 to 0.11 (0.10 to 0.20) and heritability from 0.27 to 0.35, with large credibility intervals. Correlations between herd effects on CS at different calving opportunities were positive. Genetic correlation between CS2 and CS4 was positive (0.68), whereas those involving adjacent calving opportunities (CS2–CS3 and CS3–CS4) were negative, at −0.39 and −0.54, respectively. The residual correlation CS2–CS3 was negative (−0.32). The extent of uncertainty associated with the posterior estimates of the parameters was further evaluated through simulation, assuming different true values (−0.4, −0.2, +0.2 and +0.4) for the genetic correlations and changes in the degree of belief parameters of the inverse Wishart priors for the sire covariance matrix. Although inferences were not sharp enough, CS appears to be moderately heritable. The quality of data recording should be improved, in order to effect genetic improvement in female fertility.

The effects of age and breed on carcass and muscle characteristics of cull cows slaughtered at the same fattening state between 4 and 9 years of age were analysed in four French breeds: Aubrac (AU), Charolais (CH), Limousin (LI), and Salers (SA). Muscle characteristics were determined in three muscles: longissimus thoracis (LT), semitendinosus (ST) and triceps brachii (TB). They included: (1) the % frequency, cross-sectional area and % area of the different fibre types classified according to their contraction rate and metabolic properties (slow twitch oxidative (SO), fast twitch oxidative glycolytic (FOG) and fast twitch glycolytic (FG)), (2) the isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities, representative of oxidative and glycolytic metabolism respectively, and (3) the total and insoluble collagen contents. Whatever the age of the animals at slaughter, the same carcass composition, fibre characteristics (% frequency, area, % area) and metabolic enzyme activities were obtained whatever the muscles considered. In contrast, important differences between breeds were observed in carcass composition (muscle, fat, bone) and enzyme activities. CH cows presented the highest final live weight and LI carcasses were characterized by higher muscle weight, lower fat and bone weights and more glycolytic muscles. Among the muscle characteristics, collagen was the most influenced by age and breed in a breed and muscle dependent manner respectively. AU and LI cows exhibited lower total and insoluble collagen contents than CH and SA cows, particularly at 6 to 7 years of age and for the LT and ST muscles. Thus collagen could explain an important part of the variability in meat quality from cull cows. In conclusion, results of this study provide consistent data on muscle characteristics of cull cows, few studies were available until then.

A total of 77 heifers (3⁄4 Charolais crossbred) completed a study which examined the effects of parity number on growth, changes in size of the carcass, carcass composition and meat quality. The experiment had a factorial design based on the factors: parity and level of finish. The parities were: 0 (maiden), 1, 3 and 5. At each parity animals were slaughtered at medium (EU fat class 3) and high (EU fat class 4H) levels of finish. All data were analysed by analysis of variance using individual animal observations, and linear, quadratic and asymptotic trends were explored. Where appropriate, regression equations were derived using individual animal values to describe the relationships between key parameters and the parity status of the finished animal. Animals calved at turn-out to grass in spring (April/May) and the cows were housed at weaning in mid October (mean lactation length of 163 days) and all pregnant animals were given a diet of grass silage without concentrate supplementation during the winter period. The medium level of finish animals were slaughtered 24 days after commencement of the breeding programme for parity 0 or at the end of lactation for the remaining parities, except for parity 1 animals which had a short finishing period. For the high level of finish treatment, parity 0 heifers had a longer finishing period, while all bred animals had a post-weaning finishing period. The high finish animals were finished on a diet of grass silage and concentrates. Birth weights of calves increased until the fourth parity, while weaning weights increased linearly until the fifth parity. Mean daily milk yield increased until the third lactation. Live weight, carcass weight and weights of saleable beef, separable lean and separable fat all followed asymptotic patterns of rapid initial increase and then tended to plateau with increase in parity. The asymptote values for live weight and carcass weight were 723·0 and 383·2 kg respectively. Statistically significant asymptotic relationships with parity number were obtained for live weight and various tissue weights. Nominal mature weight was assumed to be 0·99 of the asymptote and nominal mature weights for live weight, carcass weight, saleable beef, separable lean and separable fat were attained at parity (age, years) 4/5 (6·1), 3/4 (5·3), 4/5 (6·2), 3/4 (4·7) and 1/2 (2·7) respectively. The proportion of high-priced joints declined with increase in parity (linear trend P 0·01) thus indicating a reduction in relative growth of the main muscle groups of the hind limb. Shear value measurements on cooked muscle from the maiden and first parity animals indicated very tender meat, but tenderness declined with increase in parity (asymptotic trend P 0·001). Taking animals to the higher level of finish effected increases in carcass weight and separable fat in the carcass of 55·1 kg (P 0·001) and 72 g/kg (P 0·001) respectively, while separable lean declined by 53 g/kg (P 0·001). Cooked muscle from the high finish animals was less tender than from the medium finish animals (P 0·05). It was concluded that slaughtering cows at the third parity would enable a self replacing closed herd to be operated, while obtaining 0·97 of the potential maximum output of saleable beef from the cow, but there may be some compromise in the tenderness of the meat for some consumers by the third parity.

The effects of body condition score (BCS) of 2·0 or 3·0 units at calving (low v. moderate), post-partum energy intake at 0·6 or 1·0 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per day per kg M0·75 (low v. high) and unrestricted or restricted (once daily) suckling on the ability of cows to ovulate were studied in a 2 ✕ 2 ✕ 2 factorial design with each treatment replicated eight times. Calf isolation and restricted suckling were imposed shortly after selection of the first dominant follicle (DF) to emerge after day 21 post partum. The episodic release of LH (sampled at 15-min intervals for 10 h) was determined 48 h before and 48 h after the day calf isolation and restricted suckling commenced. Additional blood samples were collected weekly for plasma insulin determination. The mean interval from calving to first ovulation was shorter for cows in moderate than low BCS at calving (47·8 v. 57·1 days, s.e.d. = 4·50, P < 0·05), and for cows suckling once daily than for those with unrestricted suckling (42·9 v. 62·0 days, s.e.d. = 4·50, P < 0·001). Post-partum nutrition did not affect this interval. Mean LH pulse frequency prior to the start of restricted suckling was higher for cows of moderate than low BCS at calving (3·2 v. 1·6 pulses per 10 h, s.e.d. = 0·60, P < 0·05). Subsequently, LH pulse frequency was higher for cows suckling once daily than for those with unrestricted suckling (4·0 v. 2·2 pulses per 10 h, s.e.d. = 0·82, P < 0·05). More cows in moderate than low BCS ovulated the first DF to emerge after day 21 post partum (within 4 to 6 days) in response to restricted suckling (69 v. 25%, P < 0·05). LH pulse frequency prior to restricted suckling increased (P < 0·05) with plasma insulin concentration (categorized as low, < 5; moderate, 5 to 8; and high, >8 mIU per l). There were indications of interactions between suckling treatment and BCS (P < 0·08), and suckling treatment and plasma insulin concentration (P < 0·06), on LH pulse frequency, which suggested that calf restriction could alleviate the suppressive effects of under nutrition on episodic LH release. Amongst cows suckling once daily, the non-ovulating animals had fewer LH pulses prior to restricted suckling and smaller, slower growing DF, indicating an inability of the DF to respond to increased LH pulse frequency following calf restriction. Cows of moderate BCS, particularly those with moderate to high levels of plasma insulin (³ 5 mIU per l), responded favourably to restricted suckling. In contrast, excessively thin cows with low plasma insulin concentrations (<5 mIU per l), that had most to gain from restricted suckling, responded poorly.

This work was designed to investigate whether the profile of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) remains constant in response to underfeeding in beef cows, since in other species mobilization of fatty acids (FA) has been shown to be dependent on fatty acid structure. Twenty-one Charolais cows (multiparous, no. = 16 and primiparous, no. = 5) were assigned to one of two diets (control diet (CD; no. = 11) or restricted diet (RD; no. = 10) which, respectively supplied all or 0·7 of energy and protein requirements) after calving. Blood and composite milk samples were collected weekly before the morning meal over a period of 9 weeks. The cows given RD lost significantly more body weight (P < 0·001) and condition score (P < 0·05) than the cows given CD. Plasma NEFA and urea concentrations were also higher in RD than CD during the experiment (P < 0·05 and P < 0·001, respectively). The level of feeding did not affect plasma insulin and glucose concentrations. Milk FA were affected by feeding level. The proportions of short- and medium-chain FA were lower in RD compared with CD (C8: 0, C10: 0, C12: 0 and C14: 0, P < 0·05 and C14: 1 and C16: 0, P < 0·10) while some of the long-chain FA were higher (C17: 0 and C18: 1, P < 0·001 and C17: 1, P < 0·10). Feeding level affected the profile of FA in plasma NEFA. The proportions of C16: 0 and C18: 1 were higher (P < 0·05) in RD cows compared with CD cows while the proportions of C12: 0, C14: 1, C17: 0, C18: 0 and C18: 2 were lower (P < 0·05). There was a feeding level × time interaction in the proportions of different FA in the plasma NEFA and in the total plasma NEFA concentrations. The differences caused by feeding level gradually disappeared with time. The proportion of C18: 1 in plasma NEFA and the total plasma NEFA concentrations were quadratically positively correlated, while the correlation between C18: 2 and total plasma NEFA was negative. In conclusion, when post-partum beef cattle are underfed, plasma NEFA concentrations increase (indicating lipomobilization) and this increase is associated with an increase in the proportion of oleic acid (C18: 1) in plasma NEFA.

Two experiments were designed to study the influence of an increase in energy supply on the utilization of exogenous glucose in food-restricted post-partum Charolais suckler beef cows. In experiment 1, 18 cows were given a basal diet (BD) providing 0·70 of energy requirements from calving with or without an energy supplement (SD) of 2 kg of rolled triticale grain starting at day 32 post partum. On day 42 post partum an injection of glucose (1·0 mmol/kg live weight) lasting 20 min resulted in a similar plasma glucose and cortisol profile in each diet group but a smaller plasma insulin increase in SD than in BD cows (146 (s.e. 37) v. 273 (s.e. 37) pmol/l, P < 0·05). Plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentrations were reduced by the glucose injection (P < 0·01). Experiment 2 compared the efficiency of an energy supplement in the form of concentrate (CS, maize grain, no. = 11) or forage (PS, maize silage, no. = 10) in oestrous-synchronized beef cows previously given a restricted diet. Glucose injection resulted in a small increase in insulin concentrations during infusion with a peak at 20 min (PS: 250 (s.e. 34) v. CS: 257 (s.e. 32) pmol/l, P > 0·05). No differences were observed between the two groups of cows for glucose, insulin and cortisol profiles (P > 0·05). Similar pregnancy rates after oestrous synchronization treatment were observed in CS and PS cows (6/11 v. 5/10). In conclusion, a period of supplementation sufficient to re-establish energy balance, but not the type of supplement, influences the insulin response to exogenous glucose in food-restricted post-partum Charolais beef cows.

A model which was originally developed to derive the probability density of a calving distribution for beef cows under natural breeding has been modified to incorporate the effects of using oestrous synchronization at the beginning of the breeding period.

The model has been used to investigate five oestrous synchronization strategies over four herds, each with differing calving patterns: no synchronization; every cow in the herd is synchronized; every anoestrous cow is synchronized; every cow calving more than 20 days after the date of the planned start of calving is synchronized; every cow calving 30 days after the date of the planned start of calving is synchronized. Two of the herds previously had long calving periods and two previously had short, compact calving periods.

Model results showed that synchronization improved average herd calf live weight by 21 kg in the two herds with long prior calving periods but showed little effect in the two herds with compact prior calving periods. Synchronizing cows which calved more than 20 days after the start of calving in the herd showed similar results to synchronizing every cow in the herd and thus would be more cost effective. Synchronizing cows which calved more than 30 days after the start of calving in the herd showed a smaller advantage but only in the herds with long prior calving periods. The optimal strategy for oestrous synchronization in a herd will depend on the prior calving distribution and the average duration ofanoestrus in that herd as well as the relative costs of the treatment.

The metabolic status and reproductive performance of four pure breeds of beef cow (small size and low milk potential, Aberdeen Angus; small size and high milk potential, Welsh Black; large size and low milk potential, Charolais; and large size and high milk potential, Simmental) were monitored during their first two parities. Heifers from each breed were allocated to one of two levels of annual energy intake relative to metabolic body weight (M075) (mean daily intakes equivalent to 705 and 820 kj/kg M0·75) in a factorial design. In the 1st year 64 heifers (eight per treatment) which had calved as a consequence of first or second service were selected for the experiment. In the 2nd year 40 of these animals (five per treatment) which held to first or second service remained on experiment. Animals were housed all year round and given diets designed to represent energy intakes while grazing during the summer and conserved feeding during the winter. Pregnancy was established in late July of each year using a combination of oestrous synchronization and artificial insemination. Blood samples were collected at monthly intervals from weaning in November until calving in May; three times weekly from calving until oestrous synchronization (11 weeks later); and fortnightly thereafter until weaning.

For the annual levels of dietary energy intake offered, two breeds (Welsh Black and Charolais) exhibited relatively high growth rates and had the longest post-partum anovulatory periods; and Charolais cows also had the poorest conception rates of all breeds. Relatively lean cows at calving (body condition score < 2·5 units) were sensitive, in terms of the duration of the anovulatory period, to live-weight loss during the early post-partum period, particularly when blood glucose levels were low, whereas relatively fat cows at calving (body condition score > 2·5 units) were not. The data suggest: (i) that mechanisms controlling the anabolic processes governing maternal growth are antagonistic towards those that control reproduction; and (ii) the catabolism of lean tissue rather than fat tissue during the early post-partum period is also antagonistic towards the mechanisms that govern reproductive function in cows.

The accumulative effects of different levels of annual energy intake over the first two parities on four breeds of beef cow (small size and low milk potential, Aberdeen Angus; small size and high milk potential, Welsh Black; large size and low milk potential, Charolais; and large size and high milk potential, Simmental) were assessed for various production traits and calf performance. Heifers were allocated to each of two levels of annual energy intake relative to metabolic body weight (M0·75) (mean daily intakes equivalent to 705 and 820 kj M0·75) and for the next 2 years these animals (10 per breed) were continuously housed and given diets designed to represent energy intakes while grazing during the summer and conserved forage feeding during the winter. Changes in live weight and body composition were measured throughout both years and milk yield, milk composition and calf performance during both lactations.

Animals from each of the four breeds gained weight but lost body condition during their first two parities in a manner that was dependent on their annual level of dietary energy intake. Welsh Black cows grew more than Aberdeen Angus cows and Charolais cows more than Simmental cows so that, by weaning during the second parity, the rank order of live weights between breeds was Charolais > Simmental > Welsh Black > Aberdeen Angus. Welsh Black and Simmental cows produced higher yields of milk (7·9 and 8·7 kg respectively) than Aberdeen Angus and Charolais cows (6·5 and 5·7 kg respectively; P < 0·001). Calves from the two large breeds grew more quickly than those from the two small breeds (1·13 v. 0·99 kg/day; P < 0·01) and calf performance was influenced by milk consumption. Biological efficiency, defined as weight of calf at weaning per GJ metabolizable energy (ME) on an annual basis, increased as annual energy intake decreased and tended to be higher for large breeds on 33 GJ ME per year than for small breeds on the same level of annual energy intake (7·19 v. 6·75). The complex means by which the different breed types interacted with their nutritional environment is discussed.

This work was designed to study the influence of parity (multiparous (MP, no. = 9) or primiparous (PP, no. = 10)) and feeding level (control diet (CD; 1·00) or restricted diet (RD; proportionately 0·70 of requirements) in a 2×2 factorial design on the utilization of exogenous glucose in the suckler anoestrous Charolais beef cow. Lack of ovarian activity was confirmed by low circulating progesterone concentrations measured in weekly blood samples taken after parturition. An injection of glucose (1·5 mmol/kg live weight) lasting 20 min was given 30 days and 50 days post partum. Blood samples were collected before and for 120 min after the start of the injection and plasma insulin, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate and urea were measured. Although plasma glucose concentrations were not significantly different between treatment groups in the period immediately after the injection of glucose, CD PP animals had higher plasma insulin levels than CD MP animals (at 25 min: 596·4, 283·8, 435·1 and 309·6 pmol/l, P < 0·05 for groups PP CD, MP CD, PP RD and MP RD respectively). Plasma NEFA concentrations were initially higher in the RD groups compared with the CD groups but were reduced by the glucose injection (P < 0·001). However, the PP RD cows took longer to respond to the exogenous glucose compared with the MP RD cows (at 25 min: PP RD: 133·2 and MP RD: 57·5 eq/l, P < 0·05). In conclusion, suckler anoestrous PP cows appear to require higher plasma insulin levels than MP cows to metabolize exogenous glucose and underfed PP cows were slower to reduce plasma NEFA after glucose injection than underfed MP cows.

A model of a birthdate distribution for a herd of beef cows is constructed using the probability distributions of the variables that affect reproduction in the cow — anoestrous interval, oestrous cycle length, conception to each oestrus, gestation length, period of mating and the prior calving frequency distribution. The model is general and can be reparamaterized to deal with issues such as intervention to synchronize oestrous cycles among cows in the herd by changing the form of the relevant probability distributions.

The model is applied to the question of what time to begin mating in a herd of beef cows. The average calf live weight at day 200, herd conception rate and proportion of cows calving before the planned start of calving were calculated from the model output. The model parameters given by the anoestrous period, conception rate to each oestrus and the regression between prior calving date and anoestrous period, were varied in a factorial design to investigate a range of circumstances found on a farm. Prior calving distributions were generated by random sampling from eight actual calving frequency distributions.

Generally starling mating earlier produced an advantage in terms of extra calf live weight and herd conception rate. However, the proportion of the herd calving earlier than expected increased with early mating. Thus, the feasibility of early mating depends on the cost to the farmer of dealing with early calving cows as well as the advantage of heavier older calves.

Altering the fixed parameters in the model (variances and covariances, prior calving distributions, mating period) to accommodate the circumstances of herds run under different conditions may produce different results. Model structure allows easy alteration of these parameters and also the introduction of different probability distributions for some variables. This might be necessary to model oestrous synchronization and artificial insemination, issues not considered in this paper.

Data from two experiments are reported which test the hypothesis that nutrient and/or dry-matter intake and body condition may interact to modify hypothalamic opioidergic activity and thus influence the pulsatile release of LH during the early post-partum period and during the oestrous cycle. Experiment 1 involved 16 multiparous, twin-suckling beef cows, and was a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design in which the factors were level of post-partum energy intake (80 v. 130 M) metabolizable energy (ME) per day), the digestible undegradable protein (DUP) content of the post-partum diet (14 v. 31 g/kg dry matter), and treatment with either 200 mg or 400 mg naloxone hydrochloride. Blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 4h at weeks 4 and 7 post partum. Naloxone was administered intravenously after the eighth sample. Experiment 2 involved 16 cyclic maiden heifers and was also arranged in a factorial manner, with two levels of body condition at the start of the experimental period (2·50 and 3·16 units) and two levels of energy intake thereafter (40 and 80 MJ ME per day). Seven blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals on 4 days consecutively during the mid-luteal phase of the oestrous cycle. On the first 2 of these 4 days naloxone was administered, whilst on the last 2 days a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (buserelin; GnRH) was administered, both after the fourth sample. Plasma from both experiments was assayed for LH and prolactin (Prl).

In experiment 1, cows on 130 MJ ME per day returned to oestrus and ovulated earlier than cows on 80 MJ ME per day (44·5 v. 55·0 days; s.e.d. = 3·93; P < 0·05). At week 4 post partum the proportional increase in plasma LH following naloxone challenge was greater for cows on 130 MJ ME per day than cows on 80 MJ ME per day (1·38 v. 1·12; P < 0·05), but the converse was true at week 7 (1·15 v. 1·68; P < 0·05). Cows on the high DUP diet required a higher dose of naloxone to elicit an LH response. Few heifers in experiment 2 exhibited an LH response to naloxone. In contrast, there were significant dietary treatment effects on the LH response to GnRH (P < 0·01). Relatively thin heifers on 40 MJ ME per day exhibited the lowest proportional increases in plasma LH to GnRH challenge, whereas heifers on 80 MJ ME per day and given the higher dose of GnRH produced the greatest plasma LH responses. Mean Prl concentrations before and after feeding in experiment 2 were respectively 13·2 and 10·2 ng/l (P < 0·01).

Suckled cows given a high energy diet during the early post-partum period can overcome the opioid mediated block on LH release and resume oestrous cycles earlier than cows given a low energy diet. LH would appear to be inhibited by a non-opioid mechanism in mid-luteal phase heifers. Total pituitary reserves ofLH may be influenced by the animals nutritional status.

Reproductive performance of purebred Angus (A) and Criollo (C) cows and crossbred CA and AC cows in the temperate area of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was assessed through the study of reproductive rates, calving date, first insemination date, number of inseminations and weight related variables. The herd was grazed on pastures all year round. Matings were by artificial insemination with visual oestrus detection, from October to December. Heifers first calving was at 3 years of age. All traits were analysed with general linear models including, as corresponded, fixed effects of dam and calf genetic groups, calving year and month, dam physiological status, calving age and first order interactions. Female genetic group adjusted means were used to estimate direct (gl) and maternal (gM) breed differences and heterosis (hl) effects on reproductive traits. Weaning rate was mostly determined by oestrons detection rate. Due to the inhibitory effects of nursing on reproduction, female genetic group effects were significant for suckling cows only: mean oestrous detection rate was higher (P < 0·05) for crossbred cows (AC: 91·2 (s.e. 5-1) %; CA: 88·4 (s.e. 2·9) %) than for A (76·3 (s.e. 2·0) %) and C (49·9 (s.e. 3·3) %); direct breed effects favoured A (glA - g1c = 26·4 (s.e. 3·7) %; P < 0·001) and h1 was 26·7 (s.e. 3·4) % (P < 0·001). When only oestrous-detected cows were considered, direct breed effects were significant only for pregnancy rate fg1A —g1c = 8·5 (s.e. 4·4) %) whereas h1 was significant for pregnancy (8·3 (s.e. 3·8) %), calving (9·3 (s.e. 4·1) %) and weaning (10·1 (s.e. 4·1) %) rates (P < 0·05). Criollo cows calved later than crossbred (≍19 days) and A (≍15 days) cows mainly due to longer post-partum anoestrous. For calving date, direct breed effects favoured A (g1A — g1c = 20·8 (s.e. 5·9) days; P <0·0·001) and h1 was 11·4 (s.e. 2·8) days (P < 0·001). Low reproductive performance in C was not associated with live iveight at the beginning of mating. This genetic group was the latest in showing oestrous behaviour, even when not suckling. Number of inseminations was similar for the four genetic groups. These results sustain the principle of utilizing Fl Criollo-Angus cows to improve beef herd productivity, whereas they do not support the recommendation of using purebred Criollo females under this type of production system.

The possibilities of using embryo transfer (ET) with in-vitro produced embryos as an alternative to artificial insemination (Al) for achieving pregnancy in commercial cattle, and improving the number and quality of calves produced were assessed using 157 multiparous, beefX. dairy suckling cows (mainly Hereford × Friesian) in three autumn and three spring-calving herds in Scotland. Within each herd, cows were allocated at random to (i) Al; or ET with in-vitro produced embryos, either (ii) singly (ET(s)), or (Hi) in pairs (ET(t)) to establish pregnancy. In-vitro produced embryos were derived from oocytes recovered from the ovaries of heifers with high-quality carcasses post slaughter. Semen from a single Simmental sire was used for in-vitro embryo -production and for Al across all herds. Following oestrous synchronization, Al cows were inseminated at 48 and 72 h after removal of the synchrony device. ET cows that had a palpatable corpus luteum received either one or two in-vitro produced embryos placed non-surgically in the ipsilateral uterine horn on day 7 after oestrous (oestrus = day 0). Pregnancy rate, calving rate and calving difficulty were monitored for all cows. Calf performance was monitored on the farms of origin from birth to purchase and thereafter at one finishing unit until slaughter. Animals were slaughtered at a prescribed level of body fatness and saleable meat yields determined.

Cows that received one in-vitro produced embryo gave birth to fewer calves than cows that were artificially inseminated or received two embryos (P < 0·01). Gestation length was longer for cows that gave birth to single ET calves (288 days; P < 0·01) than cows that gave birth to Al calves (285 days) or twin ET calves (284 days). Single ET calves were heaviest at birth (P < 0·01) and higher levels of assistance at calving were required for ET calves whether born as singles or twins. ET calves of both birth types grew more quickly (<1·00 kg/day; P<0·05) and produced larger carcasses (297 kg; P < 0·01) with higher yields of saleable meat (2207 kg; P < 0·01) than Al calves (0·92 kg/day; 281·7 kg; 206·3 kg respectively).

Changes in certain blood metabolites, serum progesterone concentration and pregnancy rate, were monitored for single- and twin-suckling cows in two experiments. In experiment 1, cows were managed to achieve condition scores at calving of 2·1 (low) and 3·1 (moderate). Subsequently, these animals were placed on a fixed level of energy intake (80 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per day) for 16 weeks. Post-partum diets contained differing amounts of digestible undegradable protein (DUP), but similar amounts of effective rumen degradable protein (ERDP). In experiment 2, all cows were fed to achieve a condition score at calving of around 2·75. These animals were subsequently placed on two levels of energy intake (80 MJ and 130 MJ ME per day) for 16 weeks. The diets providing these levels of energy intake also contained differing amounts of DUP. Pregnancies were established by embryo transfer following induced oestrus.

Cows in moderate body condition at calving subsequently had higher (P < 0·05) serum non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Cows on 130 MJ ME per day had lower serum NEFA concentrations than cows on 80 MJ ME per day. Cows given higher DUP diets had higher (P <0 ·05) serum NEFA concentrations when in negative energy balance and lower serum NEFA concentrations when close to energy equilibrium than cows given lower DUP diets. Twin-suckling cows had higher (P < 0·05) serum NEFA concentrations than single-suckling cows, but only during the first 3 weeks post partum. Plasma glucose concentrations were below 3 mmol/lfor twin-suckling cows until week 7 post partum when they became similar to the values for single-suckling cows. Serum D-3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations mirrored those of plasma glucose. Serum urea-nitrogen concentrations were high for twin-suckling cows on 80 MJ ME per day and single-suckling cows on 130 MJ ME per day.

Neither body condition at calving nor post-partum energy intake significantly influenced the time taken for cows to overcome anovulation nor did they significantly influence the proportion of cows which eventually resumed normal oestrous cyclicity. DUP concentration in the post-partum diet had no overall effect on the various measures of fertility assessed but thin cows at calving subsequently placed on the high DUP diet took longer to ovulate (55 days; P < 0·05) and had the lowest pregnancy rate (0·30). The post-partum anovulatory period was longer (P < 0·01) by 27 days in experiment 1 and 12 days in experiment 2 for hvin-suckling cows compared with singlesuckling cows. A lower proportion (P < 0·001) of twin-suckling cows regained oestrous cyclicity and became pregnant in experiment 1. Fertility traits were improved when twin-suckling cows were in moderate body condition at calving and/or offered 130 MJ ME per day during the post-partum period.
