RR Lyrae (RR Lyr) stars are a well-known and useful distance indicator for old stellar populations such as globular clusters and dwarf galaxies. Fundamental-mode RR Lyr (RRab) stars are commonly used to measure distances, and the accuracy of the determined distance is strongly constrained by metallicity. Here, we investigate the metallicity dependence in the period–luminosity (PL) relation of double-mode RR Lyr (RRd) stars. We find and establish a linear relation between metallicity and period or period ratio for RRd stars. This relation can predict the metallicity as accurately as the low-resolution spectra. Based on this relation, we establish a metallicity-independent PL relation for RRd stars. Combining the distance of the Large Magellanic Cloud and Gaia parallaxes, we calibrate the zero point of the derived PL relation to an error of 0.022 mag. Using RRd stars, we measure the distances of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies with an accuracy of 2-3% and 1-2%, respectively. In the future, RRd stars could anchor galaxy distances to an accuracy of 1.0% and become an independent distance ladder in the Local Group.

This work aims to explore the different processes of formation and evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group analyzing internal and external feedbacks, taking Leo II as a model of parametrization due to its adequate large distance to the Milky Way, in order to minimize potential external effects. We present a discussion of the first results regarding the processes of formation and galactic evolution from the gas hydrodynamics. Combined with previous studies for other similar systems, such results have the potential to establish strong links for the elaboration of a consistent and coherent scenario of formation and evolution of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group.

We present here the results obtained from studying the resolved stellar populations of two dwarf irregular galaxies in the nearby Universe. These galaxies, DDO 68 and NGC 4449, were studied within the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey, an HST program aimed to uncover the many ways in which the star formation (SF) process occurs at different scales. Thanks to the deep photometry obtained in different bands (from λ2704 Å to λ8057 Å), we were able to connect the location and timescales of the star forming regions within the galaxies to merging and interaction with gas clouds and satellites, a crucial aspect of galaxy evolution, even in such small systems. From the color-magnitude diagrams of the analyzed galaxies we were able to recover their star formation history (up to ∼ 2 − 3 Gyr ago since we do not observe the oldest main sequence turn-off or horizontal branch, due to the systems’ distance), finding that the SF never really stopped, but proceeded continuously even with the succession of high and low activity. The time intervals where we find higher SF rates in the two galaxies well agree with the dynamical timescales of previous interactions events, which might represent a major channel for triggering the SF in relatively isolated galaxies.

Dwarf irregular galaxies are places of ongoing star-formation in the low-redshift Universe. Low metallicity dwarfs were originally thought to be the youngest galaxies in the local Universe, however, there is now evidence that they consist of matter which has previously undergone evolution and is enriched by star-formation. Here we present a sample of seven nearby metal-poor dwarf galaxies with a young stellar populations selected from the SDSS which we study using integral field unit (IFU) data from the VIMOS instrument, covering the spectral range between the He II 4686 line and the [SII] 6718/6733 Å doublet. We present property maps across the galaxies and compare different galaxies and different HII regions within the same galaxy. We find that the properties within one galaxy are not uniform and they also differ between different galaxies concerning star-formation, kinematics and metallicity and morphology. The observed differences across individual galaxies together with disturbed kinematics and morphologies can be interpreted as possible signs of recent interactions and/or mergers. Additionally, we present a comparison of different metallicity calibrations and search for systematic differences obtained using different methods.

As part of the Z-PAndAS Keck II DEIMOS survey of resolved stars in our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda (M31), we have built up a unique data set of measured velocities and chemistries for thousands of stars in the Andromeda stellar halo, particularly probing its rich and complex substructure. In this contribution, we will discuss the structural, dynamical and chemical properties of Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and how there is no observational evidence for a difference in the evolutionary histories of those found on and off M31's vast plane of satellites. We will also discuss a possible extension to the most significant merger event in M31 - the Giant Southern Stream - and how we can use this feature to refine our understanding of M31's mass profile, and its complex evolution.

The MESSIER surveyor is a small mission designed at exploring the very low surface brightness universe. The satellite will drift-scan the entire sky in 6 filters covering the 200–1000 nm range, reaching unprecedented surface brightness levels of 34 and 37 mag arcsec−2 in the optical and UV, respectively. These levels are required to achieve the two main science goals of the mission: to critically test the ΛCDM paradigm of structure formation through (1) the detection and characterisation of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, which are predicted to be extremely abundant around normal galaxies, but which remain elusive; and (2) tracing the cosmic web, which feeds dark matter and baryons into galactic haloes, and which may contain the reservoir of missing baryons at low redshifts. A large number of science cases, ranging from stellar mass loss episodes to intracluster light through fluctuations in the cosmological UV-optical background radiation are free by-products of the full-sky maps produced.

In this contribution the hypothesis that the Galactic globular clusters with substantial internal [Fe/H] abundance ranges are the former nuclei of disrupted dwarf galaxies is discussed. Evidence considered includes the form of the metallicity distribution function, the occurrence of large diffuse outer envelopes in cluster density profiles, and the presence of ([s-process/Fe], [Fe/H]) correlations. The hypothesis is shown to be plausible but with the caveat that if significantly more than the current nine clusters known to have [Fe/H] spreads are found, then re-evaluation will be required.

Dwarf galaxies can have very high globular cluster specific frequencies, and the GCs are in general significantly more metal-poor than the bulk of the field stars. In some dwarfs, such as Fornax, WLM, and IKN, the fraction of metal-poor stars that belong to GCs can be as high as 20%–25%, an order of magnitude higher than the 1%–2% typical of GCs in halos of larger galaxies. Given that chemical abundance anomalies appear to be present also in GCs in dwarf galaxies, this implies severe difficulties for self-enrichment scenarios that require GCs to have lost a large fraction of their initial masses. More generally, the number of metal-poor field stars in these galaxies is today less than what would originally have been present in the form of low-mass clusters if the initial cluster mass function was a power-law extending down to low masses. This may imply that the initial GC mass function in these dwarf galaxies was significantly more top-heavy than typically observed in present-day star forming environments.

Kim 1 & 2 are two new star clusters discovered in the Stromlo Missing Satellite Survey. Kim 1, located at a heliocentric distance of 19.8 ± 0.9 kpc, features an extremely low total luminosity (MV = 0.3 ± 0.5 mag) and low star concentration. Together with the large ellipticity (ε = 0.42 ± 0.10) and irregular isophotes, these properties suggest that Kim 1 is an intermediate mass star cluster being stripped by the Galactic tidal field. Kim 2 is a rare ultra-faint outer halo globular cluster located at a heliocentric distance of 104.7 ± 4.1 kpc. The cluster exhibits evidence of significant mass loss such as extra-tidal stars and mass-segregation. Kim 2 is likely to follow an orbit confined to the peripheral region of the Galactic halo, and/or to have formed in a dwarf galaxy that was later accreted into the Galactic halo.

Cosmological simulations predict that dark matter halos with circular velocities lower than 30 km/s should have lost most of their neutral gas by heating of the ultra-violet background. This is in stark contrast with gas-rich galaxies such as e.g. Leo T, Leo P and Pisces A, which all have circular velocities of ~15 km/s (Ryan-Weber et al. 2008, Bernstein-Cooper et al. 2014, Tollerud et al. 2015). We show that when we include feedback from the first stars into our models, simulated dwarfs have very different properties at redshift 0 than when this form of feedback is not included. Including this Population-III feedback leads to galaxies that lie on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation over the entire mass range of star forming dwarf galaxies, as well as reproducing a broad range of other observational properties.

What happens to dwarf galaxies as they enter the cluster potential well is one of the main unknowns in studies of galaxy evolution. Several evidence suggests that late-type galaxies enter the cluster and are transformed to dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs). We study the Virgo cluster to understand which mechanisms are involved in this transformation. We find that the dEs in the outer parts of Virgo have rotation curves with shapes and amplitudes similar to late-type galaxies of the same luminosity (Fig. 1). These dEs are rotationally supported, have disky isophotes, and younger ages than those dEs in the center of Virgo, which are pressure supported, often have boxy isophotes and are older (Fig. 1). Ram pressure stripping, thus, explains the properties of the dEs located in the outskirts of Virgo. However, the dEs in the central cluster regions, which have lost their angular momentum, must have suffered a more violent transformation. A combination of ram pressure stripping and harassment is not enough to remove the rotation and the spiral/disky structures of these galaxies. We find that on the the Faber-Jackson and the Fundamental Plane relations dEs deviate from the trends of massive elliptical galaxies towards the position of dark matter dominated systems such as the dwarf spheroidal satellites of the Milky Way and M31. Both, rotationally and pressure supported dEs, however, populate the same region in these diagrams. This indicates that dEs have a non-negligible dark matter fraction within their half light radius.

Analysis of dwarf galaxies in the local universe shows that dwarf irregular galaxies are its dominant populations and the majority of dwarf elliptical galaxies are likely to be located in the overdense regions, However, a significant fraction of blue dwarf ellipticals (dEblue) and peculiar dwarf ellipticals (dEpec are found to be located in the under-dense regions.

The nature of the dwarf galaxy population as a function of location in the cluster and within different environments is investigated. We have previously described the results of a search for low surface brightness objects in data drawn from an East-West strip of the Virgo cluster (Sabatini et al(2004)) and have compared this to a large area strip outside of the cluster (Roberts et al (2004)). In this talk I compare the East-West data (sampling sub-cluster A and outward) to new data along a North-South cluster strip that samples a different region (part of sub-cluster A, and the N, M clouds) and with data obtained for the Ursa Major cluster and fields around the spiral galaxy M101. The sample of dwarf galaxies in different environments is obtained from uniform datasets that reach central surface brightness values of 26 B mag/arcsec2 and an apparent B magnitude of 21 (MB =−10 for a Virgo Cluster distance of 16 Mpc). We discuss and interpret our results on the properties and distribution of dwarf low surface brightness galaxies in the context of variuos physical processes that are thought to act on galaxies as they form and evolve.

We study properties of globular cluster candidates (GCCs) and the diffuse stellar populations in nearby low surface brightness dwarf galaxies, using HST WFPC2 photometry in the V and I bands. Our sample consists of 18 dwarf spheroidal (dSph), 36 dwarf irregular (dIrr), and 3 transition-type galaxies, with projected linear diameters less than 3.5 kpc and mean blue surface brightness $>23$ mag/arcsec$^2$ situated at the distance 2–6 Mpc in the field and in nearby groups. Our sample dwarf spheroidal galaxies were not detected in HI and are located at the distances of up to $\sim$1 Mpc away from a nearby bright galaxy. Transition-type galaxies, which are distributed like dSph galaxies, form a very rare class of galaxies. dIrr galaxies show a weaker concentration to the nearest massive neighbors than dSph and transition-type galaxies. At a given surface brightness and luminosity, they exhibit lower mean metallicities than dSphs. In contrast to dIrr galaxies, the majority of dSph galaxies at a similar mean surface brightness contains GCCs. The percentage of GCCs located near the centers of dSph galaxies is much higher than that for dIrr galaxies. The composite population of GCCs in dSphs is spatially more concentrated than in dIrr galaxies. The color distributions of GCCs in dSph and dIrr galaxies show major differences. While the latter shows obvious bimodality with the peaks near $(V-I)_0 \sim 0.5$ and $\sim$1.0 mag, the GCC color distribution in dSph galaxies shows only one peak with a mean color $(V-I)_0 \sim 1.0$ mag. There is a tendency of increasing half-light radii with increasing projected galactocentric distances for a large number of GCCs in dSph galaxies, which is also observed in the Galactic globular cluster system. We embarked on a spectroscopic survey of GCCs in low-mass galaxies to obtain their chemical compositions and relative ages.

We present results of a photometric survey for carbon stars in the M31 dwarf spheroidal galaxies. From the low frequency of carbon stars in these galaxies compared to their Milky Way cousins we conclude that they consist of predominantly ancient stellar populations. However, the complexity and variety of the metallicity distributions in the M31 dwarf spheroidals suggest that they still experienced an extended epoch of star formation.

I discuss here the main physical constraints on Dark Matter particles that can be obtained by the study of the astrophysical signals produced by their annihilation within Dwarf Galaxies. The present results are obtained in the framework of neutralino Dark Matter scenarios and under the assumption that Dwarf Galaxies are dominated by Dark Matter.

We studied the morphology of star formation in dwarf irregular galaxies and found that, in general, this takes place on one side of a galaxy and far from the center. This is mainly true for low surface brightness galaxies; in high surface brightness dwarf irregulars the star formation tends to be more centrally concentrated, as well as being more intense. We discuss possible star formation triggers in dwarf irregular galaxies, and evaluate the reasons for the peculiar distribution of star forming regions of these galaxies. Stochastic star formation, interactions with external gas, and tidal interactions appear to be ruled out as responsible for the asymmetric pattern of star formation. We conclude that asymmetry of a dark matter halo or of an asymmetric underlying stellar distribution may trigger an asymmetric pattern of star formation.
