A key ingredient in the earliest evolutionary phase of high-mass (M>8 M⊙) star formation (HMSF) is the presence of a jet/outflow system. To study its role in HMSF, we have carried out high resolution (0.1″) VLA K-band (18-26.5 GHz) observations toward IRAS 19035+0641 A, identified as a high-mass protostellar jet candidate based on previous cm continuum data. Our observations resolve the continuum emission into an elongated structure in the NE-SW direction, confirming that the K-band continuum arises from an ionized jet. Furthermore, we detected several 22.2 GHz H2O maser spots aligned in a direction consistent with the jet axis. Zeeman splitting was detected in the strongest maser spot. In this paper, we present our results and discuss the implications of our findings.

Early cosmic epochs are characterized by low metallicity and high specific star-formation rates. These conditions are dominated by massive-star feedback that may be dramatically different than the traditional model dominated by hot, thermal superwinds driven by supernova explosions. Instead, metal-poor feedback from massive stars may be radiation-dominated, with weak mechanical feedback, possibly aiding the escape of Lyα and Lyman continuum radiation. I will describe our understanding that is emerging from observations of starburst galaxies in the local universe.

In discussing open question in the field of massive stars, I consider their evolution from birth to death. After touching upon massive star formation, which may be bi-modal and not lead to a zero-age main sequence at the highest masses, I consider the consequences of massive stars being close to their Eddington limit. Then, when discussing the effects of a binary companion, I highlight the importance of massive Algols and contact binaries for understanding the consequences of mass transfer, and the role of binaries in forming Wolf-Rayet stars. Finally, a discussion on pair instability supernovae and of superluminous supernovae is provided.

The wealth of information obtained about massive stars from observations at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths has been fundamental to understand their structure and the mechanisms regulating their evolution. There are however, important aspects that have not yet been addressed due to the lack of data and the relevant instrumentation such as the role of binarity and magnetic fields or the impact of low metallicity in the evolution of massive stars. There are plans to develop UV spectropolarimeters, UV monitors and very efficient telescopes with high collecting surfaces that will revolutionize the field. In this contribution, a short update on the current and foreseen UV instrumentation is provided.

Very metal-poor massive stars hold the key to interpret high-redshift star-forming galaxies and the early reionization epoch, but also contemporary events such as gravitational waves. To study these objects in resolved environments, we need to resort to dwarf irregular galaxies far from the potential wells of M31 and the Milky Way, and therefore distant. While the archives, recently boosted by the ULLYSES and XSHOOTU programs, store a healthy dataset of massive stars in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, the number of observed targets with poorer metal content than the SMC (1/5 Zȯ) is dramatically small. This paper reviews the state of observations of very metal-poor massive stars, assessing what can be realistically learned about their physics and evolution with current instrumentation, and arguing whether or not near-future facilities can remedy the gaps in the knowledge that remain.

There is evidence that some red supergiants (RSGs) experience phases of episodic mass-loss. These episodes yield more extreme mass-loss rates, further stripping the envelope of the RSG, significantly affecting the further evolution towards the final collapse of the star. Mass lost through RSG outbursts/superwinds will flow outwards and form dust further out from the surface and this dust may be detected and modelled. Here, we aim to derive the surface properties and estimate the global properties of Mid-IR bright RSGs in the Magellanic Clouds. These properties will then be compared to evolutionary predictions and used for future spectral energy distribution fitting studies to measure the mass-loss rates from present circumstellar dust.

B supergiants (BSGs) lie on the cool end of line-driven wind regime, such that the study of their atmospheres can help us to understand the physics of line-driven winds. So far key features of their spectra, especially in the UV region, could not be reproduced consistently with atmosphere models. This represents a significant gap in our knowledge of their physical properties and behavior, which is particularly striking for BSGs on the cool side of the Bi-Stability Jump (cooler than B1). To address this problem, we analysed a sample of Galactic cool BSGs, with sufficient UV and optical coverage. None of our targets are detected in X-rays with only upper limits existing for some of them.

A century of study has characterized Plaskett’s Star (HD 47129) as an evolved, massive, short-period, equal mass O+O binary system. The discovery of a magnetic field in the broad-line component by Grunhut et al. (2013) renewed interest in the study of this system and led to its establishment as the most rapidly rotating magnetic O-type star. Grunhut et al. (2021) observed the circular polarization signatures of the magnetic star to exhibit no radial velocity variations while the narrow-line star demonstrates radial velocity variations consistent with the established orbital period. This has raised fundamental questions about the architecture of this system and the nature of the magnetic star which have led to a major shift in our understanding of HD 47129.

We use the RIOTS4 sample of SMC field OB stars to determine the origin of massive runaways in this low-metallicity galaxy using Gaia proper motions, together with stellar masses obtained from RIOTS4 data. These data allow us to estimate the relative contributions of stars accelerated by the dynamical ejection vs binary supernova mechanisms, since dynamical ejection favors faster, more massive runaways, while SN ejection favors the opposite trend. In addition, we use the frequencies of classical OBe stars, high-mass X-ray binaries, and non-compact binaries to discriminate between the mechanisms. Our results show that the dynamical mechanism dominates by a factor of 2 – 3. This also implies a significant contribution from two-step acceleration that occurs when dynamically ejected binaries are followed by SN kicks. We update our published quantitative results from Gaia DR2 proper motions with new data from DR3.

A fundamental question for theories of massive star formation is whether OB stars can form in isolation. We assess the contribution of any in-situ OB star formation by using 210 field OB stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from the Runaways and Isolated O-Type Star Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (RIOTS4). We search for tiny, sparse clusters around our target OB stars using cluster-finding algorithms. Employing statistical tests, we compare these observations with random-field data sets. We find that ∼5% of our target fields do show evidence of higher central stellar densities, implying the presence of small clusters. This frequency of small clusters is low and within errors, it is also consistent with the field OB population being composed entirely of runaway and walkaway stars. Assuming this small cluster fraction is real, it implies that some OB stars may form in highly isolated conditions. The low frequency could be caused by these clusters evaporating on a short timescale. However, another interpretation is that the low fraction of small clusters is observed because these form rarely, or not at all, implying a higher cluster lower-mass limit and generally consistent with a relationship between maximum stellar mass (mmax) and the cluster mass (Mcl).

In this poster, using the POSYDON code, we present results on binary progenitors of stripped-envelope SNe and their companions. We find that most progenitors are expected to explode, according to typical SN prescriptions (in contrast to single star progenitors). We also show the expected masses and position in the HR diagram of the companions of these SNe at the moment of explosion, allowing us to do a first statistical comparison with the compiled sample of observational detections (or upper limits) on these companions.

We present results from 3D MHD simulations of the magnetospheres from massive stars with a dipole magnetic axis that has an arbitrary obliquity angle (β) to the stars rotation axis. As an initial direct application, we examine the global structure of co-rotating disks for tilt angles β=0, 45 and 90 degrees using ζ Pup stellar parameters as a prototype. We find that for models with rapid stellar rotation (∼ 0.5 critical rotation), accumulation surfaces closely resemble the form predicted by the analytic Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere (RRM) model, but with a mass distribution and outer disk termination set by centrifugal breakout processes. However, some significant differences are found including warping resulting from the dynamic nature of the MHD models in contrast to static RRM models. These MHD models can be used to synthesize rotational modulation of photometric absorption and H-alpha emission for a direct comparison with observations.

Winds of massive stars are an important ingredient in determining their evolution, final remnant mass, and feedback to the surrounding interstellar medium. We compare empirical results for OB star winds at low metallicity with theoretical predictions. Observations suggest very weak winds at SMC metallicity, but there are exceptions. We identified promising candidates for rotationally enhanced mass-loss rates with two component wind and partially stripped stars hiding among OB stars with slow but dense wind in the SMC. A preliminary analysis of these systems, derived parameters, and their implications are discussed. Finally, we briefly discuss the interaction of OB winds near black holes in X-ray binaries.

Progenitors of Type Ib and Ic supernovae (SNe) are stripped envelope stars and provide important clues on the mass-loss history of massive stars. Direct observations of the progenitors before the supernova explosion would provide strong constraints on the exact nature of SN Ib/Ic progenitors. Given that stripped envelope massive stars can have an optically thick wind as in the case of Wolf-Rayet stars, the influence of the wind on the observational properties needs to be properly considered to correctly infer progenitor properties from pre-SN observations. Non-LTE stellar atmosphere models indicate that the optical brightness could be greatly enhanced with an optically thick wind because of lifting-up of the photosphere from the stellar surface to the wind matter, and line and free-free emissions. So far, only a limited number of SN Ib/Ic progenitor candidates have been reported, including iPTF13bvn, SN 2017ein and SN 2019yvr. We argue that these three candidates are a biased sample, being unusually bright in the optical compared to what is expected from typical SN Ib/Ic progenitors, and that mass-loss enhancement during the final evolutionary stage can explain their optical properties.

The link between hot and cool stellar outflows is shown to be critical for correctly predicting the masses of the most massive black holes (BHs) below the so-called pair-instability supernova (PISN) mass gap. Gravitational Wave (GW) event 190521 allegedly hosted an “impossibly” heavy BH of 85 M ⊙. Here we show how our increased knowledge of both metallicity Z and temperature dependent mass loss is critical for our evolutionary scenario of a low-Z blue supergiant (BSG) progenitor of an initially approx 100 M ⊙ star to work. We show using MESA stellar evolution modelling experiments that as long as we can keep such stars above 8000 K such low-Z BSGs can avoid strong winds, and keep a very large envelope mass intact before core collapse. This naturally leads to the Cosmic Time dependent maximum BH function below the PISN gap.

High-mass X-ray binaries belong to the brightest objects in the X-ray sky. They usually consist of a massive O or B star or a blue supergiant while the compact X-ray emitting component is a neutron star (NS) or a black hole. Intensive matter accretion onto the compact object can take place through different mechanisms: wind accretion, Roche-lobe overflow, or circumstellar disk. In our multi-dimensional models we perform numerical simulations of the accretion of matter onto a compact companion in case of Be/X-ray binaries. Using Bondi-Hoyle-Littleton approximation, we estimate the NS accretion rate. We determine the Be/X-ray binary disk hydrodynamic structure and compare its deviation from isolated Be stars’ disk. From the rate and morphology of the accretion flow and the X-ray luminosity we improve the estimate of the disk mass-loss rate. We also study the behavior of a binary system undergoing a supernova explosion, assuming a blue supergiant progenitor with an aspherical circumstellar environment.

The Swift satellite allows us to use gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to peer through the hearts of star forming galaxies through cosmic time. Our open collaboration, representing most of the active European researchers in this field, builds a public legacy sample of GRB X-shooter spectroscopy while Swift continues to fly. To date, our spectroscopy of more than 100 GRB afterglows covers a redshift range from 0.059 to about 8 (Tanvir et al. 2009, Nature 461, 1254), with more than 20 robust afterglow-based metallicity measurements (over a redshift range from 1.7 to 5.9). With afterglow spectroscopy (throughout the electromagnetic spectrum from X-rays to the sub-mm) we can hence characterize the properties of star-forming galaxies over cosmic history in terms of redshift, metallicity, molecular content, ISM temperature, UV-flux density, etc.. These observations provide key information on the final evolution of the most massive stars collapsing into black holes, with the potential of probing the epoch of the formation of the first (very massive) stars.

VLT/X-shooter (Vernet et al. 2011, A&A 536, A105) is in many ways the ideal GRB follow-up instrument and indeed GRB follow-up was one of the primary science cases behind the instrument design and implementation. Due to the wide wavelength coverage of X-shooter, in the same observation one can detect molecular H2 absorption near the atmospheric cut-off and many strong emission lines from the host galaxy in the near-infrared (e.g., Friis et al. 2015, MNRAS 451, 167). For example, we have measured a metallicity of 0.1 Z⊙ for GRB 100219A at z = 4.67 (Thöne et al. 2013, MNRAS 428, 3590), 0.02 Z⊙ for GRB 111008A at z = 4.99 (Sparre et al. 2014, ApJ 785, 150) and 0.05 Z⊙ for GRB 130606A at z = 5.91 (Hartoog et al. 2015, A&A 580, 139). In the latter, the very high value of [Al/Fe]=2.40 ± 0.78 might be due to a proton capture process and may be a signature of a previous generation of massive (perhaps even the first) stars. Reconciling the abundance patterns of GRB absorbers, other types of absorbers (in particular QSO DLAs), and old stars in the Local Group is an important long-term goal of this program (see Sparre et al. 2014, ApJ 785, 150). Metallicities are also measured from host emission lines (Krühler et al. 2015, A&A 581, A125). GRB spectroscopy also allows us to determine the dust content of their environments, both through analysis of the depletion pattern and the measurement of the associated extinction (Japelj et al. 2015, A&A 451, 2050). This way one can quantify the dust-to-metals ratio and its evolution with redshift. The detection of GRBs at z > 6 shows that GRBs have become competitive as a tool to identifying galaxies at the highest redshifts and unsurpassed in providing detailed abundance information via absorption line spectroscopy.

Recent spectropolarimetric surveys of bright, hot stars have found that ~10% of OB-type stars contain strong (mostly dipolar) surface magnetic fields (~kG). The prominent paradigm describing the interaction between the stellar winds and the surface magnetic field is the magnetically confined wind shock (MCWS) model. In this model, the stellar wind plasma is forced to move along the closed field loops of the magnetic field, colliding at the magnetic equator, and creating a shock. As the shocked material cools radiatively it will emit X-rays. Therefore, X-ray spectroscopy is a key tool in detecting and characterizing the hot wind material confined by the magnetic fields of these stars. Some B-type stars are found to have very short rotational periods. The effects of the rapid rotation on the X-ray production within the magnetosphere have yet to be explored in detail. The added centrifugal force due to rapid rotation is predicted to cause faster wind outflows along the field lines, leading to higher shock temperatures and harder X-rays. However, this is not observed in all rapidly rotating magnetic B-type stars. In order to address this from a theoretical point of view, we use the X-ray Analytical Dynamical Magnetosphere (XADM) model, originally developed for slow rotators, with an implementation of new rapid rotational physics. Using X-ray spectroscopy from ESA’s XMM-Newton space telescope, we observed 5 rapidly rotating B-types stars to add to the previous list of observations. Comparing the observed X-ray luminosity and hardness ratio to that predicted by the XADM allows us to determine the role the added centrifugal force plays in the magnetospheric X-ray emission of these stars.
