In field studies 0.1 ppmw ae or less 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] applied by sprinklers in 5.1 cm of water over 8 h did not affect the number or dry weight of leaves or length of canes of 1-yr-old Concord grape plants (Vitis labrusca L.). A second application at 0.01 ppmw or higher to the same plants 1 yr later reduced growth of leaves, canes, and trunk. Combined effects of root pruning (required to position plants for treatment the second year) and 2,4-D probably account for this apparent anomaly. When 2,4-D was applied annually at 1.0 ppmw or less to established plants for three consecutive years, growth, yield, and fruit quality were not affected. No residues of 2,4-D were detected in the fruit at harvest (detection limit 0.05 ppmw). Grapes treated with 1.0 ppmw 2,4-D developed moderate injury symptoms.

After 45 weeks, between 5 and 8% of the applied radioactivity from 14C-chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino] carbonyl] benzenesulfonamide} applied to small sandy loam plots was recovered as chlorsulfuron and about 15% as 2-chlorobenzenesulfonamide. After 95 weeks, 2% of the original radioactivity remained as chlorsulfuron and 20% as the sulfonamide. The persistence of formulated chlorsulfuron was investigated using small field plots at two locations for three successive years. Between 3 and 16% of the herbicide applied during May was detected in the top 10-cm soil layers the following May using a corn-root (Zea mays L.) bioassay procedure.

The response of ‘C-20’ navy bean and ‘Frankenmuth’ soft white winter wheat grown in rotation to clomazone, imazethapyr, bentazon, and acifluorfen was examined. Clomazone at 560 and 430 g ai ha−1 plus 800 g ai ha−1 pendimethalin and 2000 g ai ha−1 chloramben visibly injured navy bean in 1 of 2 yr. However, navy bean seed moisture at harvest and yield was not reduced compared to the weed-free control. PPI and PRE treatments of 70 g ai ha−1 imazethapyr did not injure navy bean or reduce yield. Imazethapyr applied POST at 70 g ha−1 plus nonionic surfactant visibly injured navy bean. The addition of urea ammonium nitrate to imazethapyr enhanced visible injury and seed moisture compared to nonionic surfactant alone in 1 of 2 yr. However, seed yield was not reduced. Seed moisture at harvest was greater following treatment with 430 g ai ha−1 acifluorfen plus nonionic surfactant or urea ammonium nitrate and 140 and 280 g ha−1 acifluorfen plus 840 g ai ha−1 bentazon in 1 of 2 yr compared to the weed-free control, but yield was not reduced. Wheat yield was reduced in 2 of 2 and 1 of 2 yr by 560 g ha−1 and 430 g ha−1 clomazone, respectively, plus pendimethalin plus chloramben compared to the weed-free control. Wheat yield was not reduced by imazethapyr, bentazon, or acifluorfen.

Field studies on a sandy loam soil determined the influence of application method and rate and subsequent tillage on corn response to imazaquin and imazethapyr residues remaining in the soil. Imazaquin was applied preplant incorporated (PPI) and preemergence (PRE) at 70, 140, and 280 g ai/ha and postemergence (POST) at 70 and 140 g/ha. Imazethapyr was applied PPI and PRE at 70, 105, and 140 g ai/ha and POST at 70 and 105 g/ha. Subsequent tillage included fall moldboard plowing followed by spring field cultivation, fall chisel plowing followed by spring field cultivation, and no tillage. Herbicide dissipation was determined by analyzing soil cores taken in the spring at the time of corn planting and by measuring corn height and grain yield. Imidazolinone residues were detected in only 1 of 2 yr. Imazaquin was detected more frequently than imazethapyr. Imazaquin concentrations in the upper 10 cm of soil 11 mo after a PPI application of 280 g/ha were 5, 6, and 7 ng/g of soil in moldboard plow, chisel, and no-tillage systems, respectively. Imazaquin (5 ng/g) was also detected in the 10–18-cm soil depth in the moldboard plow system. Corn height and grain yield were not reduced from imazaquin or imazethapyr, regardless of application method or rate in any tillage system.

Studies were conducted in North Carolina to determine if johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] rhizomes in the soil exude or produce substances that can affect soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seedling growth. Fresh and dry weights of soybean seedlings were dependent on the concentration of rhizomes present in the soil before soil samples were used for soybean growth, and on the time of year when soil samples were collected. In studies on rhizome residues, soybean seedling dry weight decreased as percent of dry, decayed rhizomes in the soil increased. For each rhizome concentration, soybean growth inhibition decreased as decay time increased. Fresh and dry weights of soybean plants were reduced by diluted fresh rhizome extract used for irrigation once a week for 3 weeks. Since no rhizomes were present in most of the soils during soybean growth and since nutrient concentrations, organic matter, and pH were not different among the soils used, it is suggested that johnsongrass rhizomes living or decaying in the soil exude, contain, or produce substances that exhibit allelopathic characteristics to soybean growth.

Losses of picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) in water exposed to sunlight ranged from 50 to 80% after 1 days' exposure (14 h sunlight) and 95% or more after 4 days exposure (56 h of sunlight) at four locations in Southern Arizona. Samples exposed at the highest elevation (2800 m) consistently lost picloram more quickly than samples at the lower elevations. Dry, recrystallized picloram losses were 11, 47, and 67% after 1, 2, and 4 days of sunlight exposure, respectively. At the same times, picloram losses in water were 65, 89, and 99%, respectively. These results indicate that photodecomposition is an important factor for the use and residue longevity of picloram on high-altitude rangelands of the western United States.

Preliminary greenhouse studies indicated the presence of a synergistic interaction between low rates of fluometuron [1,1-dimethyl-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)urea] or diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] in combination with linuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea] or chlorbromuron [3-(4-bromo-3-chlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea]. In a 3-yr field study, moderate injury of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Stoneville 213’) with no yield reduction was observed with fluometuron or diuron at 1.68 and 1.12 kg/ha, respectively, but higher rates (5.04 and 3.36 kg/ha, respectively) caused injury and yield reductions. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Hill’] injury ratings during the second year indicated a synergistic interaction between residue from fluometuron at 5.04 kg/ha combined with linuron at 2.48 kg/ha or chlorbromuron at 3.85 kg/ha, and from diuron at 3.36 kg/ha combined with linuron at 2.48 kg/ha. These interactions were not apparent in soybean yield data. Soybean injury the third year ranged from 30 to 60% with single or repeated applications of linuron or chlorbromuron, although yields were not affected. Residual fluometuron and diuron from 2 yr of application at 5.04 and 3.36 kg/ha, respectively, injured soybeans, but did not reduce yields. Significant synergistic interactions were observed through injury and yield measurements after two annual applications of fluometuron at 5.04 kg/ha combined with linuron or chlorbromuron. A synergistic interaction was detected in soybean yields with chlorbromuron at 3.85 kg/ha preceded by two annual applications of diuron at 3.36 kg/ha. Such interactions may occur under field conditions, but are unlikely to be economically significant. Chemical analysis indicated little evidence of accumulation, even with repeated application of fluometuron or diuron at 5.04 and 3.36 kg/ha, respectively.

Sublethal amounts of 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid] were applied to several vegetable crops in order to determine effect on yield and quality in a simulated drift experiment. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and root crops were most sensitive to 2,4-D; as little as 2.1 g/ha of acid distorted tomato fruit shape and elongated radish (Raphanus sativus L.) roots. All root crops were rendered unmarketable by 10.4 g/ha and gross yields were reduced by exposure to 104 g/ha. Yield of peppers (Capsicum frutescens L. var. grossum) was increased by exposure to 2.1 g/ha and severely depressed by 104 g/ha. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit shape was distorted at 11 g/ha and yield was reduced slightly. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), onion (Allium cepa L.), and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) were least sensitive to 2,4-D. Exposure to 20.8 g/ha did not reduce yields of lettuce or cabbage. Onion yields were reduced by application of 104 g/ha. Bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) yield was decreased by exposure to 22 g/ha, but potato (Solarium tuberosum L.) yield increased at 16 g/ha. Herbicide residues in the crop foliage were proportional to the degree of exposure. Residue analysis combined with foliar symptoms may be useful in predicting crop damage following 2,4-D drift.

A modified analytical procedure involving gas-liquid chromatography was used to investigate the relative amounts of 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] and two of its amino acid conjugate metabolites, 2,4-D-Asp [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetylaspartic acid] and 2,4-D-Glu [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetylglutamic acid], in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. var. Amsoy] plants, soybean callus tissue and red oak (Quercus rubra L.) plants at 2, 4, and 10 days after application of either 2,4-D, its ester, or its salts. 2,4-D-Asp and 2,4-D-Glu were found as major metabolites in all soybean tissues analyzed and their amounts varied depending upon the days following treatment, the formulation of treatment, and the plant substrate (0.03 to 57 ppm for 2,4-D-Asp and 0.05 to 75 ppm for 2,4-D-Glu). The amount of amino acid conjugates peaked at 2 days after treatment of callus tissue and 4 days after treatment of soybean plants. Much higher amounts of these amino acid conjugates were obtained from soybean plants treated with the propylene glycol butyl ether ester of 2,4-D than plants treated with amine salts of 2,4-D. No amino acid conjugates were observed with red oak plants.

Field experiments were conducted from 1974 to 1977 at Redfield and Centerville, South Dakota, to evaluate the tolerance of soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] at different growth stages and five varieties of soybeans to dicamba (3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid) and to determine dicamba residue in the foliage. Yield reduction occurred from applications when soybeans were flowering. Furthermore, germination was reduced by dicamba application at pod-fill. Dicamba residue was detected in foliage 7 days but not 18 days after application. Extent of dicamba use and drift occurrence was determined by a telephone survey of 159 farmers. Thirty-one percent of the farmers surveyed used dicamba in 1976.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 in Manitoba and Saskatchewan to determine the effect of simulated sprayer contamination with thifensulfuron and thifensulfuron:tribenuron (2:1) on canola. In greenhouse studies, canola was more sensitive to tribenuron and thifensulfuron:tribenuron (2:1) than thifensulfuron. Thifensulfuron was more phytotoxic to canola when applied with Merge (50% surfactant blend and 50% petroleum hydrocarbon solvents) than with Agral 90 (non-ionic spreader and activator) at recommended adjuvant concentrations {1% and 0.2% (v/v), respectively}. In the field, canola injury tended to be more severe when thifensulfuron was applied with Merge than with Agral 90, but yields did not differ significantly between adjuvants, Thifensulfuron and thifensulfuron:tribenuron (2:1) at rates as low as 0.1 g ai/ha severely injured canola, delayed flowering, and reduced yield and subsequent seed germination. Thifensulfuron at 0.1 to 0.15 g/ha in mixtures with sethoxydim plus Merge reduced yields up to 61%.

The invention of the bow and arrow was a pivotal moment in the human story and its earliest use is a primary quarry of the modern researcher. Since the organic parts of the weapon – wood, bone, cord and feathers – very rarely survive, the deduction that a bow and arrow was in use depends heavily on the examination of certain classes of stone artefacts and their context. Here the authors apply rigorous analytical reasoning to the task, and demonstrate that, conforming to their exacting checklist, is an early assemblage from Sibudu Cave, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, which therefore suggests bow and arrow technology in use there 64 millennia ago.

Participatory rural appraisal was undertaken in 70 villages in India and Nepal, covering 1185 farmers to generate baseline information on the current plant protection practices. The study revealed that 93% of the farmers in India and 90% in Nepal had adopted chemical control for the management of various insect pests in different crops; however, less than 20% of the farmers expressed confidence on their efficacy. In India, 52% of farmers get their plant protection advice from pesticide dealers, while in Nepal, the majority of the farmers (69%) make their plant protection decisions through agricultural officers. A majority of the farmers (73% in India and 86% in Nepal) initiate the plant protection based on the first appearance of the pest, irrespective of their population, crop stage and their damage relationships. About 50% of the farmers in India and 20% in Nepal were not using any protective clothing while spraying. Health problems associated with the application of plant protection chemicals were reported by farmers. The cost of plant protection on various crops ranged from 7 to 40% of the total crop production cost. Though integrated pest management (IPM) has been advocated for the past two decades, only 32% in India and 20% in Nepal were aware of IPM practices. IPM implementation in selected villages brought a 20–65% reduction in pesticide use in different crops. The vegetable samples analysed for pesticide residues revealed the presence of residues.

By extracting lipids from potsherds and determining the δ13C of the most abundant fatty acids, degraded fats from ruminant animals, such as cattle, and non-ruminant animals, such as pigs, can be distinguished. The authors use this phenomenon to investigate Late Neolithic pig exploitation and find that the pig ‘signature’ was more frequently found among residues from Grooved Ware than other prehistoric pottery types.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), widely used in agriculture, can cause toxic effects to humans and animals. The main purpose of the present work was to determine the contamination in raw milk by the main organophosphorus pesticides used in Italy and to evaluate the opportunity to start specific procedures of risk management along the milk production chain. The samples, collected in 4 Italian dairy plants directly from the tank trucks during the delivering, were representative of 920 tonnes of raw milk. The isolation of the OPPs (acephate, chlorpyriphos, chlorpyriphos-methyl, diazinon, methamidophos, methidathion, phorate, pirimiphos-methyl) was performed by liquid partition followed by clean-up with solid phase extraction. The analyses were carried out by dual column gas chromatography using two nitrogen-phosphorus detectors. Among the 135 samples analysed, 37 were positive in traces and 10 showed an OPP contamination ranging from 5 to 18 μg/kg. The higher results were recorded in the samples collected during the autumn-winter period. The main pollutants detected were acephate and chlorpyriphos. In every positive sample found, the OPP contamination was lower than the maximum residue level (MRL) fixed by the European Commission.

Equivalently, when $\Gamma=\bigcap_{\lambda=1}^{n-1} S_\lambda$ is the complete intersection of n - 1 algebraic hypersurfaces $S_\lambda$, we get $(d+n-\sum_{\lambda=1}^{n-1}\delta_\lambda)\delta \geq {\mathcal B}(\Gamma)-{\mathcal E}(\Gamma)$, where $\delta_\lambda$ denotes the degree of $S_\lambda$ and ${\mathcal E}(\Gamma)=2-2g+(\sum_\lambda\delta_\lambda-(n+1))\delta$ the correction term in the genus formula. These results are also refined when $\Gamma$ is reducible.

We present an explicit formula for computing toric residues of ample divisors as a quotient of two determinants, à la Macaulay, where the numerator is a minor of the denominator. We present a combinatorial construction of a specific element of residue 1. We also give an irreducible representation of toric residues by extending the theory of subresultants to monomials of critical degree in the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding toric variety.

Let $f:X\to Y$ be a Cohen–Macaulay map of finite type between Noetherian schemes, and $g:Y'\to Y$ a map, with Y′ Noetherian. Let $f':X'\to Y'$ be the base change of f under g and $g':X'\to X$ the base change of g under f. We show that there is a canonical isomorphism $\theta_g^f: {g'}^*\omega_f \simeq \omega_{f'}$, where $\omega_f$ and $\omega_{f'}$ are the relative dualizing sheaves. The map $\theta_g^f$ is easily described when f is proper, and has a more subtle description when f is not. If f is smooth we show that $\theta_g^f$ corresponds to the canonical identification $g'^*\Omega_f^r= \Omega_{f'}^r$ of differential forms, where r is the relative dimension of f. This work is closely related to B. Conrad's work on base change. However, our approach to the problems and our viewpoint are very different from Conrad's: dualizing complexes and their Cousin versions, residual complexes, do not appear in this paper.

The fate of ivermectin (IVM) residues was studied throughout the processing of daily bulk milk from 30 ewes (taken up to 33 d following subcutaneous administration of 0·2 mg IVM/kg b.w.) in the following milk products: yoghurt made from raw and pasteurized milk; cheese after pressing; 30- and 60-day ripened cheese; and whey, secondary whey and whey proteins obtained after cheese–making (albumin cheese). The concentration of the H2B1a component of IVM was analysed in these dairy products using an HPLC method with fluorescence detection. The mean recovery of the method was, depending on the matrix, between 87 and 100%. Limits of detection in the order of only 0·1 μg H2B1a/kg of product were achieved. Maximum concentrations of IVM were detected mostly at 2 d after drug administration to the ewes. The highest concentration of IVM was found on day 2 in 60-day ripened cheese (96 μg H2B1a/kg cheese). Secondary whey was the matrix with the lowest concentration of IVM (<0·6 μg H2B1a/kg). Residue levels fell below the limits of detection between day 5 (for secondary whey) and day 25 (for all cheese samples). In the matrices investigated, linear correlations between daily concentrations of IVM, milk fat and solid content were evident. During yoghurt production, fermentation and thermal stability of IVM was observed. During cheese production, approximately 35% of the IVM, present in the raw (bulk) milk samples, was lost. From the results it was concluded that the processing of ewes' milk did not eliminate the drug residues under investigation. The consequences of IVM in the human diet were discussed. Milk from treated animals should be excluded from production of fat products like cheese for longer after treatment with IVM than for lower fat products.

The reduction in levels of organochlorine pesticide residues in food of animal origin in the past 30 years has been achieved especially by controlling entrance via the feed chain. A further reduction was achieved by registration and use of less persistent pesticides both for direct treatment of animals and of plant material. The remaining problems (e.g. dioxins and PCB's) are much harder to tackle. They are either of a ubiquitous nature and their impact might be enlarged by the present welfare trend requiring more contact of the animals with their environment, or they are of a sporadic nature making checking and control quite hard to execute. The present public demand for a farm animal production that is in balance with the animals' needs and a residue free product adds even more complications to the system.
