Diabrotica speciosa is an important pest of several crops in South America, including soybeans. Adults cause severe defoliation in soybean plants, and damage is significant when cotyledons are attacked. This study evaluated feeding non-preference to D. speciosa adults using 10 soybean genotypes, testing (i) 15-day-old whole plants and (ii) leaf disks of 60-day-old plants, through assessments of soybean attractiveness and leaf area consumed (LAC). Foliar contents of flavonoids and nutrients, and leaf trichome density were quantified for potential correlations with soybean resistance to adult of D. speciosa. In the whole young-plant experiment, under free-choice conditions, the lowest LAC was observed in IAC 100 and PI 227687. In no-choice, PI 227687 and IGRA RA 626 RR showed lower LAC than the other genotypes. In the leaf disk test, in free-choice, the genotypes IAC 100, PI 274454, PI 227687, DM 339, and BR 16 were the least preferred by adult of D. speciosa. In no-choice, PI 274454 was one of the least preferred, similarly to IGRA RA 626 RR, Dowling, and PI 227687. In the whole plant experiment, a high rutin content and low amounts of zinc, calcium, sulfur and manganese were associated with less consumption of D. speciosa on leaves of resistant genotypes. In contrast, in the leaf disk test there was a significant influence of trichomes in soybean resistance to the pest. In conclusion, the PI lines herein assessed are also promising sources for developing cultivars resistant to D. speciosa.

The influence of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on seedling growth and leaf surface characteristics of important rangeland weeds Cynoglossum officinale L. (houndstongue), Centaurea diffusa Lam. (diffuse knapweed), and Tragopogon pratensis L. (meadow salsify) was investigated in a greenhouse by exposing seedlings to 0, 7, or 11 kJ m−2 d−1 of biologically effective UV-B radiation. UV-B radiation reduced leaf, stem, and root fresh weights, leaf area, and leaf: shoot ratio and increased shoot dry matter content, specific leaf weight, and leaf greenness of C. officinale seedlings. Leaf, stem, and root fresh weight, and leaf area of C. diffusa seedlings decreased, whereas shoot dry matter content, specific leaf weight, leaf: shoot ratio, and leaf greenness were unaffected. T. pratensis seedlings exposed to UV-B radiation had diminished leaf greenness, but no change was observed in leaf or stem fresh weight, leaf area, or leaf: shoot ratio. Uniseriate trichome abundance in C. officinale seedlings increased and trichome orientation changed in response to UV-B exposure. UV-B treatments decreased uniseriate trichome abundance in C. diffusa; glandular trichome abundance and the ratio of glandular: uniseriate trichomes were not affected. T. pratensis seedlings showed no change in the amount of epicuticular wax on the adaxial leaf surface in response to UV-B irradiation. Shoot dry weight was not influenced by removal of epicuticular wax prior to UV-B exposure. Results suggest that epicuticular wax is not an important factor in acclimation of T. pratensis seedlings to UV-B radiation. Susceptibility to UV-B–induced damage was greatest for C. officinale seedlings and least for T. pratensis seedlings. Modification of plant morphology or reduction in growth induced by enhanced UV-B radiation may influence competitive relationships between rangeland weeds and their associated forage species.

Introduction. Mature green vanilla pods accumulate 4-O-(3-methoxy-benzaldehyde)-β-D-glucoside (glucovanillin), which, upon hydrolysis by an endogenous b-glucosidase, liberates vanillin, the major aroma component of vanilla. Little is known on the spatial distribution of aroma-generating phenolics, and the enzymes responsible for their liberation (β-glucosidase) and oxidation (peroxidase). We report here quantitative data with respect to these three components in relation to the anatomy of the pod. Furthermore, the spatial progression of oxidation is shown. Materials and methods. Mature green vanilla pods were analyzed for their contents of phenolics (HPLC), and β-glucosidase and peroxidase activities by spectrophotometric techniques using p-nitrophenyl glucoside and vanillin as substrates, respectively. Lipids were examined under fluorescence microscopy after Nile red staining. Oxidation development was observed on transverse slices of pods. Results and discussion. Phenolics, and β-glucosidase and peroxidase activities showed gradients of increasing-decreasing concentrations from the stem to the blossom end of pods. The β-glucosidase activity is distributed in between the placentae, mesocarp, and trichomes in a [7 / 2 / 1] proportion while that of peroxidase shows a [38 / 1] ratio in the mesocarp and placentae, and was absent from trichomes. Oxidation begins from the blossom end in the placentae, progressively invading the mesocarp and moving towards the stem end. Conclusion. The green mature vanilla pod is spatially heterogeneous for its phenolics, and β-glucosidase and peroxidase activities, its placentae playing an important role in the liberation of vanillin and its subsequent oxidation.

Introduction. Sites of storage of glucovanillin in the pod have been controversially reported for decades; we aim, using precise and widely accepted technical terminology, to clarify this controversy by providing an anatomical, histochemical and biochemical evidence-based picture of glucovanillin accumulation sites. The pod also synthesizes an oleoresin and a mucilage of unknown constitutions; we report here their localization and structures. Materials and methods. The pod anatomy was examined by light and epifluorescence microscopy. A protocol was established allowing fine hand-dissection of diverse anatomical parts of the pod (mesocarp, placentae, trichomes, intralocular interstitial cell-free region and seeds). Glucovanillin and γ-pyranones were extracted and analyzed by HPLC, while the structures of the mucilaginous polysaccharides were determined after permethylation. Results and discussion. Glucovanillin is essentially stored in the placentae (92%) and marginally in trichomes (7%); traces were measured in the mesocarp and intralocular interstitial cell-free medium. Trichomes store massive amounts of a fluorescing oleoresin (44%) rich in alkenylmethyldihydro-γ-pyranones and synthesize a mucilage made of a glucomannan and a pectic polysaccharide carrying monomeric arabinose and galactose side-chains. Conclusion. To date, the physiological roles of glucovanillin, long-chain pyranones, and mucilage remain unknown.

Two shaving methods, one by using a sharp razor blade and the other a small pair of dissecting scissors, were tested on pods of Vigna vexillata accessions to investigate the effect of trichomes on feeding and development of the pod-bug Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stål (Hemiptera: Coreidae). Electron micrographs of unshaved (control) pods showed that all trichome types (glandular, long non-glandular and short non-glandular) were present on the pod surface. Shaving with a pair of scissors shortened long non-glandular trichomes, with little or no damage to the glandular types. Percentages of seed damage and nymphs surviving to the adult stage were similar (P>0.05) between unshaved and scissors-shaved pods. These pods showed significantly lower (P<0.05) percent seed damage than razor-shaved and solvent-washed pods, whose glandular trichomes were all completely scraped or washed off. The opposite trend was observed for the insect's growth index, indicating that glandular trichomes had a greater influence than non-glandular trichomes on feeding and development of C. tomentosicollis. The present study suggests that the scissor-shaving method would be more appropriate if the effect of trichome length is being investigated, and the more abrasive razor-shaving method if the effect of glandular trichomes is of interest

Trichomes of Hedera L. taxa have long been used as an important character in delimiting species. Hedera exhibits two distinct trichome types: scale-like and stellate. This study examined the trichome variation in sixteen currently recognized Hedera taxa using scanning electron microscopy. Measurements of trichome morphology were taken, and variation among taxa compared. Of the taxa with scale-like trichomes, H. maderensis Rutherford subsp. maderensis has the largest overall length, longest rays, and largest fusion of rays. Of the species with stellate trichomes, H. helix has the largest overall, and also has the longest rays and widest rays.

Cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., is susceptible to a wide spectrum of insect pests from seedling to harvest as well as in storage. Insecticide use has been the most commonly adopted method for the control of cowpea pests. However, due to the deleterious effects of insecticides on man, livestock and the environment, research over the years has been focused mainly on developing resistant/tolerant cultivars as a vital component in the integrated management of cowpea pests. This approach has, however, recorded varying degrees of success, due in part to the multiple and often overlapping pest complex attacking at different phenological growth stages of the crop.

In spite of the progress in the utilisation of insect-resistant cowpea varieties, the use of resistance as a control tactic has by no means been fully realised. There are many important cowpea insect pests for which resistant varieties are not yet available for commercial cultivation. Where resistant varieties are available for a given insect, these varieties may not be widely planted because of their unsuitability to local conditions.

In this paper, the status of host plant resistance research in cowpea is reviewed and some novel approaches aimed at solving its seemingly intractable pest problem are proposed, based on the state-of-the-art scientific and crop biotechnological development. The proposed framework for orientation of cowpea resistance research should ensure yield stability and sustainability for the resource-poor, smallscale farmers in Africa.

Genetic diversity analysis was conducted on a set of 20 sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] cultivars having resistance to shootfly (Atherigona seccata Rond.), originating from different geographic regions, and representing different taxonomic groups. The genetic diversity for shootfly resistance was assessed using multivariate analysis (D2 statistic and canonical variate analysis), and geographic/taxonomic divergence. The grouping of cultivars based on genetic divergence was found more accurate and relevant than that based on either geographic or taxonomie divergence. Both D2 and canonical variate analyses gave very similiar clustering patterns over the years analysed. Trichome density contributed mainly toward genetic divergence in shootfly resistance, followed by glossiness. Based on the presence or absence of these traits, the cultivars resistant to shootfly were classified into four major clusters. Resistant cultivars IS 844 and IS 1054 formed separate clusters over the years. Heterosis for shootfly resistance was found associated with genetic divergence but not with geographic or taxonomie divergence.

The influence of resistance or susceptibility of certain maize genotypes on Chilo partellus colonization was studied. The aspects studied were: oviposition in relation to date of planting, plant age and certain morphological and biochemical characteristics. The pattern of oviposition was similar among the maize genotypes and among the different planting dates. However, the intensity of oviposition differed among the maize genotypes and also with plant age. Plants in the whorl stage of development were the most preferred for oviposition. On the whorl-stage plants, ca 92% of all the eggs were deposited on the lower leaves (1–4 from the ground). As the lower leaves senesced with plant age, the upper leaves were selected for oviposition. On all leaves, the lower surfaces were more preferred. The plant characters that appeared to influence oviposition included plant exudates (as the moth diet) and leaf surface trichomes. The quality of exudates from the different genotypes appeared to influence moth fecundity and longevity, while the trichomes appeared to influence the selection of oviposition sites. The possibility of interactions between these factors and oviposition is discussed.

The leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii Burgess, a polyphagous agricultural pest, can attack crops at different stages of development; some are attacked at the beginning of the crop cycle and others at the end of the cycle. Experiments on the differential susceptibility of the bean Phaseolus vulgaris and the potato Solanum tuberosum plants were done to get some information about factors which influence host selection by the leafminer. The distribution and density of leaf trichomes, as well as the nutritional status of the host plants, were found to be important in host selection. High trichome density acts as a physical deterrent to Liriomyza flies, just as senescing primary bean leaves induce non-acceptability. When given a choice, flies prefer bean to potato leaf discs, though the latter possess less trichomes. Other factors (chemical attractants and some nutrient components) might therefore also be involved in the complex host selection behaviour of L. trifolii.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is an important food crop, especially of the semi-arid areas of Asia and Africa. One of the major constraints affecting the popularity of high-yielding hybrids and varieties is their extremely high susceptibility to insect pests.

Painter (1951) has reviewed in detail the work done on resistance in sorghum to the chinch bug (Blissus leucopterus), corn leaf aphid (Aphis maidis) and sorghum midge (Contarinia sorghicola). In the last decade and a half considerable work has been done on resistance to the shootfly (Atherigona seccata), stem borer (Chilo partellus) and sorghum midge (Contarinia sorghicola). By conducting multilo-cation screenings of world germplasm under natural and artificial infestation conditions, not only have promising sources of resistance been identified but a number of them have been utilised in crossing programmes to develop high-yielding resistant cultivars. Some sources with multiple resistance have also been identified.

The mechanisms of resistance in sorghum to the major pests have been investigated. It is seen that the mechanisms are generally complex and the observed field resistance is the total reaction of several components. There are several leads available which justify further intensive work, especially on identifying naturally occurring plant products associated with antibiosis mechanism.
