Cold, neutral interstellar gas, the reservoir for star formation, is traced through the absorption of the 21-cm continuum radiation by neutral hydrogen (H i). Although detected in one hundred cases in the host galaxies of distant radio sources, only recently have column densities approaching the maximum value observed in Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption systems ($N_{{\textrm{H}\,\scriptsize{\textrm{I}}}}\sim 10^{22}$ $\textrm{cm}^{-2}$) been found. Here, we explore the implications these have for the hypothesis that the detection rate of H i absorption is dominated by photo-ionisation from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find, with the addition all of the current searches for H i absorption at $z\geq0.1$, a strong correlation between the H i absorption strength and the ionising photon rate, with the maximum value at which H i is detected remaining close to the theoretical value in which all of the neutral gas would be ionised in a large spiral galaxy ($Q_{{\textrm{H}\,\scriptsize{\textrm{I}}}} = 2.9\times10^{56}$ ionising photons s$^{-1}$). We also rule out other effects (excitation by the radio continuum and changing gas properties) as the dominant cause for the decrease in the detection rate with redshift. Furthermore, from the maximum theoretical column density, we find that the five high column density systems have spin temperatures close to those of the Milky Way ($T_{\textrm{spin}} \lesssim 300$ K), whereas, from our model of a gaseous galactic disc, the H i detection at $Q_{{\textrm{H}\,\scriptsize{\textrm{I}}}} =2.9\times10^{56}$ s$^{-1}$ yields $T_{\textrm{spin}}\sim10\,000$ K, consistent with the gas being highly ionised.

We report on a study of 9 nearby primitive galaxies observed by Hubble’s COS far-UV spectrograph that can serve as templates of high-z galaxies to be observed by JWST. By “primitive galaxies,” we mean galaxies having a low stellar mass, and low gas metallicity, , whether they are local or at high redshift. We find that far-UV spectra of these galaxies show evidence of hard radiation, including X-rays. Following Thuan et al. (2004), we identify these galaxies as massive X-ray binaries containing a massive accreting stellar black hole. We further find that the lower the metallicity, the higher the probability of extremely strong X-radiation. Following Heger et al. (2003), we suggest that the accreting black hold is produced by direct collapse of stars having initial masses greater than 50 . The X-radiation produced by black hole disk directly affects the surrounding interstellar medium, and many of these effects are observable in far-UV spectra.

We have studied the star formation properties of a massive void galaxy - I Zw 81. We performed 2D structural decomposition on Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) g- and r-band observation of I Zw 81 using GALFIT. The galaxy consists of an unresolved small bulge, a bar, an inner ring, and a truncated disk. We have used far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) observation of Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat for our analysis. The NUV–r color map of the lenticular galaxy illustrates a shallow positive color gradient in the profile, implying that the bar and inner ring are more star-forming than the outer disk. The FUV emission is mainly concentrated in the central region of the galaxy. A tidal tail-like feature is detected in the CFHT observations. We infer that bar and minor mergers-like interactions enhance the gas inflow and drive star formation in the center of I Zw 81.

Modelling and interpreting the SEDs of galaxies has become one of the key tools at the disposal of extragalactic astronomers. Ideally, we could hope that, through a detailed study of its SED, we can infer the correct physical properties and the evolutionary history of a galaxy. In the past decade, panchromatic SED fitting, i.e. modelling the SED over the entire UV–submm wavelength regime, has seen an enormous advance. Several advanced new codes have been developed, nearly all based on Bayesian inference modelling. In this review, we briefly touch upon the different ingredients necessary for panchromatic SED modelling, and discuss the methodology and some important aspects of Bayesian SED modelling. The current uncertainties and limitations of panchromatic SED modelling are discussed, and we explore some avenues how the models and techniques can potentially be improved in the near future.

Panchromatic modeling is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal to measure reliably the physical properties of galaxies across cosmic times. We present here an entirely new implementation in python of one such tool: CIGALE. Developed along three main design principles: simplicity, modularity, and efficiency, it has proven to be a versatile code that in addition to estimating the physical properties of galaxies (or regions within galaxies), can generate arbitrary sets of theoretical models or be used as a library to build other tools. Among its defining features, it is a truly panchromatic code ranging from the far-ultraviolet to the radio that takes into account numerous physical components (including active nuclei or synchrotron emission), that can fit non-photometric data, handle upper limits, determine photometric redshifts, and even build mock catalogs.

We measure the evolution of the UV upturn color for galaxies on the red sequence in clusters at 0 < z < 0.7 and to luminosity levels L ∼ L*. We show that the UV upturn color does not change until at least z = 0.55 but becomes significantly redder at z = 0.7. This is the first detection of evolution in the UV upturn. Our observations are inconsistent with all models proposed for its origin except the presence of a population of helium enriched stars, with helium abundances above 42 % and formed at z > 4.

The distribution of galaxies has been studied to show the difference between the blue cloud and red sequence and to define the green valley region. However, there are still many open questions regarding the importance of the green valley for understanding the morphological transformation and evolution of galaxies, how galaxies change from late-type to early-type and the role of AGN in galaxy formation and evolution scenario. The work focused on studying in more details the properties of green valley galaxies by testing the six most used selection criteria, differences between them, and how they may affect the main results and conclusions. The main findings are that, by selecting the green valley galaxies using different criteria, we are selecting different types of galaxies in terms of their stellar masses, sSFR, SFR, spectroscopic classification and morphological properties, where the difference was more significant for colour criteria than for sSFR and SFR vs. M* criteria.

Understanding the ionizing spectrum of low-metallicity galaxies is of great importance for modeling and interpreting emission line observations of early/distant galaxies.

Although a wide suite of stellar evolution, atmosphere, population synthesis, and photoionization models, taking many physical processes into account now exist, all models face a common problem: the inability to explain the presence of nebular Heii emission, which is observed in many low metallicity galaxies, both in UV and optical spectra. Several possible explanations have been proposed in the literature, including Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, binaries, very massive stars, X-ray sources, or shocks. However, none has so far been able to explain the major observations.

We briefly discuss the He ii problem, available empirical data, and observed trends combining X-ray, optical and other studies. We present a simple and consistent physical model showing that X-ray binaries could explain the long-standing nebular Heii problem. Our model, described in Schaerer et al. (2019), successfully explains the observed trends and strength of nebular He ii emission in large samples of low metallicity galaxies and in individual galaxies, which have been studied in detail and with multi-wavelength observations. Our results have in particular important implications for the interpretation of galaxy spectra in the early Universe, which will be obtained with upcoming and future facilities.

. Recent works have shown that early-type galaxies (ETGs) are much more complex than early studies suggested. We present early results from a combined analysis of optical spectra and ultraviolet photometry for a sample of 3453 red sequence galaxies in at z < 0.1 that are classified as elliptical by Galaxy Zoo. By measuring the Gini index of the star-formation histories derived by starlight, we investigate the complexity of the mixture of stellar populations required to describe ETGs in our sample. When fitting only optical spectra, starlight assigns more or less the same mixture of stellar populations to all ETGs, while the addition of UV data unveils a bimodallity in the star-formation histories of these galaxies. We find evidence for stellar populations younger than 1 Gyr in 17 per cent of our sample, indicating that some galaxies do not stay permanently quenched after reaching the red sequence.

In 2014, a 179-orbit allocation of Hubble Space Telescope time anchored a massive reverberation-mapping program on the well-studied Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. Supporting imaging and spectrophotometric observations were provided by Swift, Chandra, Spitzer, and a world-wide network of ground-based telescopes. Understanding the data remains a significant challenge, partly because the level of detail is far beyond what has been seen before and partly because the behavior of the AGN was not typical of its past behavior. Based on analysis to date, the following conclusions can be reached: (1) the AGN accretion disk has a temperature profile that is consistent with that predicted by the Shakura–Sunyaev model, but is about three times larger than expected; (2) at least part of the broad-line region appears to be a Keplerian disk seen at intermediate inclination, and (3) the broad-line emission response from the far side of the disk is weaker than expected.

Initial efforts to identify extended UV disk (XUV-disk) galaxies were confined to nearby targets using image products from early in the GALEX mission. We developed a beta Zooniverse-based citizen science project to address this issue, specifically (1) allowing a dramatically larger galaxy sample by crowd-sourcing blink comparison UV-optical image inspection to volunteers, and (2) incorporating all archived GALEX data for each target considered. We aim to widely deploy this project to the public within the upcoming year.

The escape fraction of Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation from galaxies remains one of the primary uncertainties in studies of reionization. However, few LyC-emitting galaxies are known. The recently identified, low-redshift “Green Pea” (GP) galaxies exhibit a number of similarities with high-redshift galaxies, and their optical emission lines suggest they may be some of the elusive LyC emitters. Recent HST COS and ACS observations of four GPs suggest further evidence for LyC escape and give new insights into the origins of Lyα and low-ionization UV lines in high-redshift galaxies. The Lyα emission and low-ionization emission and absorption lines provide a coherent physical picture of the neutral gas distribution in the GPs and may identify LyC emitters at high redshift. The rare, low-redshift GPs hint at possible factors that may enable LyC and Lyα escape from high-redshift galaxies.

The UV escape fraction, fescUV, is a key parameter determining the apparent SED of star forming galaxies. However, it is not well known how fescUV depends on the global geometry of dust distribution, nor how it evolves with time, although several models are proposed (e.g., Calzetti (2001)). We use ~130 normal star-forming galaxies (114 at z ~ 0 from Cortese et al. (2012) and 15 at z ~ 1–3 from Magnelli et al. (2012) and Saintonge et al. (2013)), to find that the z ~ 0 galaxies show a relatively tight anti-correlation between fescUV and surface dust mass density, Σd (See Fig. 1(a)). This correlation can be reproduced by a dust geometry model that well-mixed stars and dust follow the same exponential profile (Fig. 1(b)) with an effective mass-absorption coefficient κ(1600 Å) = 7.6+5.3−3.0 × 104 cm2 g−1, similar to the Milky Way value including absorption and scatter. The z ~ 1–3 galaxies are not inconsistent with this model. Our model can be easily implemented in semi-analytic models and cosmological hydrodynamics simulations (CHSs) of galaxy formation. Initial results for Shimizu et al. (2014)'s CHSs are presented.

We undertake a comprehensive comparative test of seven widely-used spectral synthesis models using multi-band HST photometry of a sample of eight YMCs in two galaxies. We provide a first quantitative estimate of the accuracies and uncertainties of new models, show the good progress of models in fitting high-quality observations, and highlight the need of further comprehensive comparative tests.

The gas added to and removed from galaxies over cosmic time greatly affects their stellar populations and star formation rates. QSO absorption line studies in close QSO/galaxy pairs create a unique opportunity to study the physical conditions and kinematics of this gas. Here we present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of the QSO/galaxy pair, 3C 232/NGC 3067. The quasar spectrum contains a Lyman limit (NHi = 1 × 1020 cm−2) absorption system (LLS) at cz = 1421 km s−1 that is associated with the nearby Sab galaxy NGC 3067. Previous work identifies this absorber as a high-velocity cloud (HVC) in NGC 3067 but the kinematics of the absorbing gas, infalling or outflowing, were uncertain. The HST images presented here establish the orientation of NGC 3067 and so establish that the LLS/HVC is infalling. Using this system as a prototype, we extend these results to higher-z MgII/LLS to suggest that Mgii/LLSs are a sightline sampling of the so-called ‘cold mode accretion’ (CMA) infalling onto luminous galaxies. To match the observed MgII absorber statistics, the CMA must be more highly ionised at higher redshifts. The key observations needed to further the study of low-z LLSs is HST UV spectroscopy, for which a new instrument, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, has just been installed greatly enhancing our observational capabilities.

We observed the inner filament of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), using the F225W, F657N and F814W filters. We find a young stellar population near the south-west tip of the filament. We constrain the ages of these stars to 1-3 Myrs. No further recent star formation is found along the filament.

We propose an updated explanation for the origin of the inner filament. It has been suggested Sutherland et al.1993 that radio jets can shock the surrounding gas, giving rise to the observed optical line emission. We argue that such shocks can naturally arise due to a weak cocoon-driven bow shock (rather than from the radio jet directly) propagating through the diffuse interstellar medium. We suggest such a shock has overrun a molecular cloud, triggering star formation in the dense molecular core. The outer, more diffuse parts of the cloud are then ablated and shock heated, giving rise to the observed optical line and X-ray emission.

We present new population synthesis models (Chung et al.2011) for quiescent early-type galaxies (ETGs) with UV-upturn phenomenon using relatively metal-poor and helium-enhanced subpopulations in the model. We find that the presence of helium-enhanced subpopulations in ETGs can naturally reproduce the strong UV-upturns observed in giant elliptical galaxies (Figure 1. left panel), without invoking unrealistically old ages (Park & Lee 1997). Our models with helium-enhanced subpopulations also predict that the well-known Burstein relation can be explained by the fraction of helium-enhanced subpopulation, the mean age, and the mean metallicity of the underlying stellar populations (Figure 1. right panel).

Star-formation is one of the main processes that shape galaxies, and together with black-hole accretion activity the two agents of energy production in galaxies. It is important on a range of scales from star clusters/OB associations to galaxy-wide and even group/cluster scales. Recently, studies of star-formation in sub-galactic and galaxy-wide scales have met significant advances owing to: (a) developments in the theory of stellar evolution, stellar atmospheres, and radiative transfer in the interstellar medium; (b) the availability of more sensitive and higher resolution data; and (c) observations in previously poorly charted wavebands (e.g. Ultraviolet, Infrared, and X-rays). These data allow us to study more galaxies at ever-increasing distances and nearby galaxies in greater detail, and different modes of star formation activity such as massive star formation and low level continuous star formation in a variety of environments. In this contribution we summarize recent results in the fields of multi-wavelength calibrations of star-formation rate indicators, the Stellar Initial Mass function, and radiative transfer and modeling of the Spectrale Energy Disrtributions of galaxies.

This study is part of a series devoted to the investigation of a large sample of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), their properties and the relationships between these and the properties of the host clusters. In this paper, we compare the stellar population properties derived from high signal-to-noise, optical long-slit spectra with the GALEX ultraviolet (UV) colour measurements for 36 nearby BCGs to understand the diversity in the most rapidly evolving feature in old stellar systems, the UV-upturn. We investigate: (1) the possible differences between the UV-upturn of BCGs and those of a control sample of ordinary ellipticals in the same mass range, as well as possible correlations between the UV-upturn and other general properties of the galaxies; (2) possible correlations between the UV-upturn and the properties of the host clusters; (3) recently proposed scenarios where helium-sedimentation in the cluster centre can produce an enhanced UV-upturn. We find systematic differences between the UV-colours of BCGs and ordinary ellipticals, but we do not find correlations between these colours and the properties of the host clusters. Furthermore, the observations do not support the predictions made by the helium-sedimentation model as an enhancer of the UV-upturn.

Evolutionary scenarios suggest that several mechanisms (from inner secular evolution to accretion/merging) may transform galaxy members, driving groups from an active star forming phase to a more passive, typical of dense environments. We are investigating this transition in a nearby group sample, designed to cover a wide range of properties (see also Marino et al. (2010), Bettoni et al. (2011) and Marino et al. (2012)). We study two groups, USGC U268 and USGC U376 located in different regions of the Leo cloud, through a photometric and kinematic characterization of their member galaxies. We revisit the group membership, using results from recent red-shift surveys, and we investigate their substructures. U268, composed of 10 catalogued members and 11 new added members, has a small fraction (~24%) of early-type galaxies (ETGs). U376 has 16 plus 8 new added members, with ~38% of ETGs. We find the significant substructuring in both groups suggesting that they are likely accreting galaxies. U268 is located in a more loose environment than U376. For each member galaxy, broad band integrated and surface photometry have been obtained in far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) with GALEX, and in u, g, r, i, z (SDSS) bands. Hα imaging and 2D high resolution kinematical data have been obtained using PUMA Scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer at the 2.12 m telescope in San Pedro Mártir (Baja California, México). We improved the galaxy classification and we detected morphological and kinematical distortions that may be connected to either on-going and/or past interaction/accretion events or environmental induced secular evolution. U268 appears more active than U376, with a large fraction of galaxies showing interaction signatures (60% vs. 13%). The presence of bars among late-type galaxies is ~10% in U268 and 29% in U376. The cumulative distribution of (FUV - NUV) colors of galaxies in U268 is significantly different (bluer) than that of U376's galaxies. Most (80%) of the early-type members in U376 inhabits the red sequence, a large fraction of galaxies, of different morphological types, are located in the green valley, while the blue sequence is under-populated with respect to U268.
