Summary
(i) THE RULE OF 1855
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen
The primary object of this Society is to provide a religious Asylum for incurables, aged and infirm persons in destitute circumstances, and to train up Orphan children to useful employments; and although other works of mercy may from time to time be added at the discretion of the Superiors, these shall always have the first consideration and hold the principal place in the work of the Sisters.
It is also another object of this Institution to afford opportunities for persons apart from the world and its distractions to ‘perfect Holiness in the fear of the LORD’, to grow in the love of our HOLY SAVIOUR, and to show forth love to Him by acts of love to His poor and afflicted.
To this end the Sisters are exhorted to lay aside all secondary motives, together with all love of self and of their own carnal wills, and to study in singleness of heart, and of purpose to make the love of CHRIST the end and aim of all their works, prayers and words - offering up each and every one of them to Him Whose they are, and Whom alone they should desire to serve.
67, Mortimer Street,
Feast of the Ascension, 1855.
GENERAL RULES AND ADMONITIONS
I Any person desirous of joining this community shall be received as a Probationer upon the recommendation of a clergyman, if confirmed by the Incumbent of All Saints', who has consented to act as the spiritual director of the Sisterhood, but she shall not be admitted as a Sister until she shall have passed a certain time of probation, the length of which shall be decided by the Director and Mother Superior of the House conjointly - who alone shall have power to judge of her fitness for the religious life, and either to reject her if they consider her vocation doubtful, or to subject her to a longer probation, as they may judge expedient. The shortest period of probation shall be one year and one day. If admitted to be a Sister she shall be required to give a promise of obedience to the Rules and Regulations of the Institute.
