THIS PART FOCUSES on two exotic objects with sacredassociations— peacock and lotus—through whichforeign influence was merged with existing Chineseiconography, albeit in very different ways. ChapterFive considers the impact on the sacred image ofpeacocks in four thirdcentury rhapsodies. ChapterSix uncovers the influence of early translatedBuddhist sutras in the transformation of the nativelotus from an ordinary flower into an icon chargedwith spiritual associations.
