Summary
This chapter reviews Colombia’s political and economic history and several crises which led to the convening of a Constituent Assembly in 1991. The chapter reviews the legal and political basis for the Constituent Assembly as well as some of the pertinent debates, regarding the creation of a Constitutional Court. One main goal of the Constituent Assembly was to create a more inclusive society by making political institutions themselves more representative. The chapter then analyzes the elected and non-elected branches of government created by the 1991 Constitution as well as constitutional reforms since that time. This chapter concludes with a rich description of the Colombian Constitutional Court.
