Summary
Charter 1. Letter from Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury to the prior and convent requesting the grant of the tithes of Monks Eleigh for Peter the scribe (1152–1161)
T[heobald], by the grace of God archbishop of Canterbury, primate of England and legate of the apostolic see, to his beloved sons in Christ, Wibert the prior and W[?illiam] the sub-prior and all the convent of the church of Christ, Canterbury, greetings. For our dear son Peter, our devoted scribe, we extend our prayers universally, asking whether, for our said love and his devoted affection which we know he has towards us, you will grant the tithes of our lordship (dominii) of Eleigh to be paid to his person whilst he lives. And lest this gift by us should cause prejudice or damage, after his decease, the tithes there shall be yielded to our use once more. And as witness against every malicious deed [or] usurpations, this little charter will remain and be valid forever with us.
Charter 2. Grant by the prior and convent of the tithes of Monks Eleigh to Peter the scribe (1152–1161)
Wibert, prior of the church of Christ, Canterbury, and the whole convent, to his chief servants (prepositis ministris suis), both present and future, and to all his men, French and English, of Eleigh (Hellega), greetings. Know us to have granted and given, with common assent and kind affection, for the love of God and the prayers of our lord archbishop Theobald of Canterbury, to Peter the scribe, clerk of the archbishop and of us personally, the tithes of our whole lordship of Eleigh both in crops and in all other things accustomed to be tithed, to be possessed [by him] fully, for as long as he shall live or remain in the world. And when he shall die or renounce the world, the same tithes shall revert to our use and their original state, so that no-one who is habitually of the faithful is able to reclaim the tithes of that said church, nor shall any right be sold to them, that is to say, thereafter the church shall have the grain from four acres each year at harvest as of old, as it was accustomed to have.
