Summary

Egypt is presented as an example of non amicable state-NGO relations, as compared to South Africa. The chapter starts with theoretical perspectives on state-NGO relations, followed by a review of relevant laws in Egypt, and a brief history of how the Egyptian women's movement was politicised throughout recent history. The core of the chapter is based on literature, as well as some in-depth interviews with NGO staff members in Egypt, providing invaluable insights in the repercussions of a shrinking public space that significantly curtails the potential to realise women's human rights.
