Published online by Cambridge University Press:  11 January 2019

Summary

Summary

The limbic system is considered the ‘command center’ for autonomic functions and emotions. This was first recognized by Papez in 1937 who described a group of related forebrain nuclei participating in emotional responses. Questions regarding the neuroanatomy of the limbic system and its various functions remain, regardless of many years of fundamental research. Neurobiological characterization of cardiovascular neuronal circuitry may contribute to our understanding of limbic circuitry underlying emotional responses. In this paper our recent progress is described regarding the anatomy of limbic cardiovascular circuitry. Also, effects of typical and atypical antipsychotic drugs on the limbic cardiovascular areas are presented.
