A procedure is presented for the chemical analysis of rocks by x-ray fluorescence. Rocks are grouped within a set of twelve empirical standard compositions, prepared by sintering to 1200°C appropriate mixes of minerals and chemicals. For the major rock components silica, alumina, calcia, magnesia, potash, and ferric oxide, and the trace elements silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, manganese, tin, and antimony, quadratic equations are derived correlating concentration and intensity ratios corrected for dead time, background, and equipment drift. Interelemental effects are computed as a series of correcting factors modifying the basic analytical equations.
