Concepts of unreliability underlying the factor of safety for aircraft structures
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 04 July 2016
Extract
In considering reliability, it is logical to look at sources of uncertainty, variability and inaccuracy. British Civil Airworthiness Requirements - Section D defines the factor of safety in terms of several sources of unreliability, as follows:

inaccuracies in structural analysis,
variability in the strength of materials.
