Project Economic Evaluation

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  04 July 2016

Extract

The early papers given in this symposium, dealing with Civil and Military Market Research, form the basis for identification of possible new projects. The last paper to be given today, dealing with Value Analysis, deals with the subject of meeting design, manufacturing and quality requirements for a given cost.

The object of this paper is to deal with one important aspect of the process that takes place between completion of recommendations from Market Research and the setting up and control process in Value Analysis. To give some idea of the activities that take place between phases involving Market Research and Value Analysis, the flow chart of Fig. 1 has been prepared showing the interrelation between technical, manufacturing and economic appraisals.

Note on page 616 * It is recognised that different companies will have different breakdowns in the elements of the definition of Net Profit. However, amendments can be made in the analysis to take account of these differences.

Note on page 616 † It is recognised that this is not strictly true with varying production rates where in practice M will vary. However, high productivity levels of M are used in the numerical analysis which will not be sensitive to volume within the accuracies of this note.

Note on page 617 * This ratio in year “m” is not to be used in isolation in the later Assets analysis, as due to phasing of design, development and production. It will only be meaningful when summed over the project life.
