International air travel becomes more affordable over the years with the introduction of low-cost carriers (LCCs) in Asia Pacific. As a result, this region has seen an exponential growth in its air traffic movements. Asia Pacific has been recording faster air traffic growths, compared to regions such as Europe and North America. This is largely due to emerging markets and developing economies in Asia Pacific. This is especially seen in the demand and supply for LCCs in Southeast Asia. Changi Airport, being one of the major air traffic hubs in Asia, is facing overloaded traffic in the future due to this exponential growth. Although a new runway and new terminals are proposed and in the process of being built, the coming years could still bring a huge challenge to the airport, if its existing capacity is not maximised to cope with the increasing traffic demand. Hence, we studied the impacts of increasing LCC flights on the airport runway capacity. Different runway operational scenarios were simulated to investigate their advantages and disadvantages. It is found that the segregated parallel arrival-departure runway operation is beneficial. By simulating various operational scenarios with the projected increasing flight movements, it is found that a dedicated runway to medium-sized arrival aircraft may be more beneficial, as this would possibly enable it to have a higher runway capacity.

The general problem of determining cruise fuel burn is addressed by considering the variation of the product of engine overall efficiency and airframe lift-to-drag ratio, (ηoL/D), with Mach number and lift coefficient. This quantity is the aerothermodynamic determinant of fuel burn rate. Using a small amount of real aircraft data and exploiting normalisation, it is found that near universal relationships exist between the key variables. With this major simplification, an analytic, near exact solution is derived in which the aircraft-related input data are reduced to just three parameters, namely the optimum value of (ηoL/D) and the lift coefficient and Mach number combination at which it occurs. These are quantities that are either available from open information sources or can be estimated using established analytic methods. By introducing models of the take-off and climb and the descent and landing phases, the method is extended to provide accurate trip fuel estimates.

It is shown that there is an ideal flight level (IFL) at which the fuel consumption rate is a minimum for all speeds in the normal cruise operating range. Furthermore, the IFL at the end of cruise is approximately the same for all aircraft, whilst the IFL at the beginning of cruise depends, primarily, on the distance to be flown. There is little dependence on the size of the aircraft, or its take-off mass.

In the context of the ‘fuel-based’ assessment of operational inefficiency, the method is further developed to determine the sensitivity of the trip fuel requirement to changes in the operational parameters governed by air traffic management (ATM). The result is two simple equations. These are used to estimate the current ATM fuel burden. At the global level, this is about 20% with more than half being attributable to flights of less than 1,200 km.

Finally, the method is used to estimate the fuel burn penalty associated with reducing contrail formation by simply avoiding those regions of the atmosphere that are supersaturated with respect to ice. If the aircraft is at the IFL when avoiding action is required, flying below the supersaturated region minimises the additional fuel use. Even when multiple evasive manoeuvres are needed, the additional trip fuel requirement is expected to be less than 0.5%.

For aircraft that employ distributed propeller propulsion systems, the distributed propeller slipstream increases the analysis complexity. The objective of this paper is to rapidly analyse the influence of propeller slipstream on a wing using a fast prediction approach to perform conceptual design studies. This fast approach is implemented through a panel/viscous vortex particle hybrid method taking into account the air viscosity effect. The parametric studies of propeller streamwise, spanwise, vertical installed position, propeller number and rotational direction are conducted for a rectangular wing platform in two different propeller-wing configurations. The results indicate that the propeller slipstream causes both the augmentations of the wing lift and drag in a traditional tractor propeller layout. For an over-the-wing propeller configuration, however, the obvious lift increase and drag decrease can be obtained. A rear propeller position relative to the wing chord leads to a beneficial increase in lift while a fore propeller location is able to decrease the wing drag. The maximum increment of the lift-to-drag ratio can be achieved by 17.6% when the propeller is located at 30% of the wing chord, which shows a considerable advantage in improving the wing aerodynamic efficiency.

Zonal Safety Analysis (ZSA) is a major part of the civil aircraft safety assessment process described in Aerospace Recommended Practice 4761 (ARP4761). It considers safety effects that systems/items installed in the same zone (i.e. a defined area within the aircraft body) may have on each other. Although the ZSA may be conducted at any design stage, it would be most cost-effective to do it during preliminary design, due to the greater opportunity for influence on system and structural designs and architecture. The existing ZSA methodology of ARP4761 was analysed, but it was found to be more suitable for detail design rather than preliminary design. The authors therefore developed a methodology that would be more suitable for preliminary design and named it the Preliminary Zonal Safety Analysis (PZSA). This new methodology was verified by means of the use of a case study, based on the NASA N3-X project. Several lessons were learnt from the case study, leading to refinement of the proposed method. These lessons included focusing on the positional layout of major components for the zonal safety inspection, and using the Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)/Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) to identify system external failure modes. The resulting PZSA needs further refinement, but should prove to be a useful design tool for the preliminary design process.

The current research paper describes the lateral-directional parameter estimation from flight data of a miniature Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) using Maximum Likelihood (ML), and Neural-Gauss-Newton (NGN) methods. An unmanned configuration with a cropped delta planform and thin rectangular cross-section has been designed, fabricated and instrumented. Exhaustive full-scale wind-tunnel tests were performed on the UAV to extract the form of aerodynamic model that has to be postulated a priori for parameter estimation. Rigorous flight tests have been performed to acquire the flight data for several prescribed manoeuvres. Four sets of compatible flight data have been used to carry out parameter estimation using classical ML and neural-network-based NGN methods. It is observed that the estimated parameters are consistent and the lower values of the Cramer-Rao bound for the corresponding estimates have shown significant confidence in the obtained parameters. Furthermore, to validate the aerodynamic model used and to enhance the confidence in the estimated parameters, a proof of match exercise has been carried out.

The development of high-performance computing and computational fluid dynamics methods have evolved to the point where it is possible to simulate complete helicopter configurations with good accuracy. Computational fluid dynamics methods have also been applied to problems such as rotor/fuselage and main/tail rotor interactions, performance studies in hover and forward flight, rotor design, and so on. The GOAHEAD project is a good example of a coordinated effort to validate computational fluid dynamics for complex helicopter configurations. Nevertheless, current efforts are limited to steady flight and focus mainly on expanding the edges of the flight envelope. The present work tackles the problem of simulating manoeuvring flight in a computational fluid dynamics environment by integrating a moving grid method and the helicopter flight mechanics solver with computational fluid dynamics. After a discussion of previous works carried out on the subject and a description of the methods used, validation of the computational fluid dynamics for ship airwake flow and rotorcraft flight at low advance ratio are presented. Finally, the results obtained for manoeuvring flight cases are presented and discussed.

It is a challenge for small, fixed-wing aerial vehicles to maintain flight stability under gusts. Inspired by the geometric features and the structural dynamic characteristics of the gliding bird wing, an elastic wing with similar characteristics was designed and optimised for use as part of unmanned aerial vehicle. A flight dynamic model, which includes the coupling of the longitudinal flight modes and the aeroelastic modes of the flexible wing, was built to analyse the mechanisms of specific coupling for the structural characteristics of the wing design, and how these specific couplings affect flight dynamics. The results showed that the bio-inspired elastic wing effectively allows alleviation of the gust response of the prototype through coupling effects of the short period and the first aeroelastic mode, even with a considerable frequency gap. These effects become more significant when the airspeed becomes larger. The conclusions of this research can facilitate further development of bird-sized unmanned aerial vehicles to extend their applications and make these vehicles more adaptive for flight in complex atmospheric environments.

Propeller synchrophasing control is an active method to reduce the noise and vibration of turboprop aircraft without additional weight and power. Phase control accuracy has a great influence on the noise reduction effect of synchrophasing. An integrated power/speed/synchrophasing control strategy is proposed to improve the control precision. Speed/phase control transformation logic based on a multi-blade phase plane is adopted which can take both the rapidity of speed response and phase control precision into account, but there exists switching oscillation during the mode transform process. In order to suppress the phase fluctuation due to exterior disturbance, a slave-slave control scheme is provided to take place of a master-slave scheme. Simulation results based on an integrated turboprop engine/propeller real-time non-linear model show that speed/phase integration logic can improve the response rapidity of both the speed and phase. The precision of the control system is verified to be in acceptable range.

The development of new technologies – such as rapid prototyping – and the use of materials with improved properties – such as highly resistant extruded polystyrene foam which can be easily and precisely shaped, while conserving its mechanical properties – allow researchers to improve design concepts. This article details the development of a new set of morphing wings for a 15-kg maximum take-off weight Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from concept design, to flight tests, including modelling, design optimisation, construction and wind-tunnel tests. A set of comparator-equivalent conventional wings have been used throughout in order to be able to judge any benefits stemming from the adoption of morphing technology. This article shows that the morphing wings provide a controllable aircraft while reducing drag by a factor of 40% compared to the comparator wings with conventional ailerons in a deflected position.

Surrogate models are widely used for dataset correlation. A popular application very frequently shown in public literature is in the field of engineering design where a large number of design parameters are correlated with performance indices of a complex system based on existing numerical or experimental information. Such an approach allows the identification of the key design parameters and their impact on the system’s performance. The generated surrogate model can become part of wider computational platforms and enable optimisation of the complex system without the need to run expensive simulations.

In this paper, a number of design point simulations for a combined gas-steam cycle are used to generate a response surface. The generated response surface correlates a range of cycle’s key design parameters with its thermal efficiency while it also enables identification of the optimum overall pressure ratio and the high pressure level of the raised steam across a range of recuperator effectiveness, pinch temperature difference across the heat recovery steam generator and the pressure at the condenser. The accuracy of a range of surrogate models to capture the design space is evaluated using root mean square statistical metrics.

Carbon fibres with high tensile strength are being increasingly utilised in the manufacture of advanced composite aerostructures. A Modified Compact Tension (MCT) specimen is often deployed to measure the longitudinal intralaminar fracture toughness but a high tensile strength often leads to premature damage away from the crack tip. We present an approach whereby the MCT specimen is supported by external fixtures to prevent premature damage. In addition, we have developed a novel measurement technique, based on the fibre failure strain and C-scanning, to determine the crack length in the presence of surface sublaminate delamination which masks the crack tip location. A set of cross-ply specimens, with a ((90/0)s)4 layup, were manufactured from an IMS60/epoxy composite system Two different data reduction schemes, compliance calibration and the area method, are used to determine the fibre-dominated initiation and propagation intralaminar fracture toughness values. Propagation values of fracture toughness were measured at 774.9 ± 5.2% kJ/m2 and 768.5 ± 4.1% kJ/m2, when using the compliance calibration method and the area method, respectively. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is carried out on the fracture surface to obtain insight into the damage mechanism of high-tensile-strength fibre-reinforced unidirectional composites. The measured tensile fracture toughness value is used in a fully validated computational model to simulate the physical test.

The lifting-line theory is widely used for obtaining aerodynamic performance results in various engineering fields, from aircraft conceptual design to wind-power generation. Many different models were proposed, each tailored for a specific purpose, thus having a rather narrow applicability range. This paper presents a general lifting-line model capable of accurately analysing a wide range of engineering problems involving lifting surfaces, both steady-state and unsteady cases. It can be used for lifting surface with sweep, dihedral, twisting and winglets and includes features such as non-linear viscous corrections, unsteady and quasi-steady force calculation, stable wake relaxation through fictitious time marching and wake stretching and dissipation. Possible applications include wing design for low-speed aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles, the study of high-frequency avian flapping flight or wind-turbine blade design and analysis. Several validation studies are performed, both steady-state and unsteady, the method showing good agreement with experimental data or numerical results obtained with more computationally expensive methods.

In this paper, an integrated approach to turbine overspeed analysis is presented, taking into account the secondary air system dynamics and mechanical friction in a turbine assembly following an unlocated high-pressure shaft failure. The axial load acting on the rotating turbine assembly is a governing parameter in terms of overspeed protection since it governs the level of mechanical friction which acts against the turbine acceleration due to gas torque. The axial load is dependent on both the force coming from secondary air system cavities surrounding the disc and the force on the rotor blades. It is highly affected by secondary air system dynamics because rotor movement modifies the geometry of seals and flow paths within the network. As a result, the primary parameters of interest in this study are the axial load on the turbine rotor, the friction torque between rotating and static structures and the axial position of the rotor.

Following an initial review of potential damage scenarios, several cases are run to establish the effect of each damage scenario and variable parameter within the model, with comparisons being made to a baseline case in which no interactions are modelled. This allows important aspects of the secondary air system to be identified in terms of overspeed prevention, as well as guidelines on design changes in current and future networks that will be beneficial for overspeed prevention.

The insufficient depth of modelling to capture the flow physics within primary combustion zone is the prime reason behind limited accuracy of semi-empirical correlations. Flame volume concept establishes a better connection between LBO performance and flame parameters, which improves the modelling depth and hence the prediction accuracy. Nonetheless, estimation of flame parameters is a challenging task. In addition, the iterative loop to approach convergence for a single geometry demands several numerical simulation runs. In this study, the association of LBO performance has been extended to flow structures, they are uniquely associated with the geometric features and can efficiently relate global LBO performance with primary zone geometry. The lean blowout phenomenon was presented as a contest between igniting and extinction forces within Reverse Flow Zone. These forces were quantified by four performance parameters including area, minimum axial velocity, average temperature, and average velocity. Selected parameters provide valuable information regarding the size of recirculation bubble, the intensity of flow reversal and the amount of entrained hot gases. For the purpose of validation, 11 combustor geometries were selected. The RANS simulation was carried out to estimate performance parameters, and predicted performance was compared against experimental data. The excellent agreement highlights the efficiency and promising future for the proposed methodology. Moreover, the association of prediction process with flow structure, instead of geometric features/dimension, makes it universal prediction methodology for wide range of combustor configurations.

Turbulent airflow in a supersonic intake model of rectangular cross-section is studied numerically. Instability of shock waves formed in the intake and ahead of the entrance is examined. Solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are obtained with a finite-volume solver of second-order accuracy. The expulsion and the swallowing of the shocks with a variation of free-stream parameters are studied at both subsonic and supersonic conditions prescribed at the outlet. Hysteresis in the dependence of 2D flow on the free-stream velocity and angle-of-attack is documented. An influence of 3D effects on the flow is examined.

A novel statistical model is presented to quantify situation awareness in the operation of small civilian Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Today, the vast majority of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operation takes place under Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) of a human operator, who is wholly responsible for the safety of the flight. As operation begins to move to Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), it is likely that this responsibility will become shared between operator and the increasingly autonomous UAS itself. Before we seek to quantify the safety of such a system, it is beneficial to analyse the safety of existing Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations to provide a target level of safety. Prior to considering any on-board decision making, it is essential to ensure that the artificial situation awareness system of a UAS in Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) is at least as good as awareness of a human operator. The paper provides a probabilistic theory and model for the high-level abstractions of situation awareness to guide future assessment of BVLOS operations.

The paper presents a method for constructing a set of vertical flight path segments, that would compose an aircraft's vertical flight envelope, by using an aircraft performance model. This method is intended to be used for aircraft flight plan prediction and optimisation algorithms. The goal is to reduce the volume of recurring segment performance computations currently required for flight plan prediction or optimisation. The method presented in this paper applies to a free-flight scenario. The flight-path segments composing the vertical flight envelope belong to one of the unrestricted climb, constant-speed level flight, step-climb and continuous descent segments, performed at the consigned climb, cruise and descent speed schedules and at the consigned air temperature values. The method employs an aircraft model using linear interpolation tables. Nine test scenarios were utilised to assess the performances of the resulting flight envelopes as a function of the number of cruise altitudes and descent flight paths. The set of evaluated performance parameters includes the range of total flight times and still-air flight distances, and the vertical profiles describing the minimum and maximum flight times, and still-air flight distances. The advantages of the proposed method are multiple. First, it eliminates the need for repetitive aircraft performance computations of identical vertical flight plan segments, and provides the means for quick retrieval of the corresponding performance data for use in the construction of a full flight plan. Second, the vertical flight path look-up structure and the vertical flight-path graph describe a set of vertical flight paths that consider an aircraft's and flight plan's configuration parameters and cover its maximum flight envelope. Third, the look-up structure and the graph provide the means for rapid and clear identification of the available options for constructing a flight-plan segment, as well as for detecting the points associated with changes in the flight phases, including climb, cruise, step-climb and descent.

A new wing-tip concept with morphing upper surface and interchangeable conventional and morphing ailerons was designed, manufactured, bench and wind-tunnel tested. The development of this wing-tip model was performed in the frame of an international CRIAQ project, and the purpose was to demonstrate the wing upper surface and aileron morphing capabilities in improving the wing-tip aerodynamic performances. During numerical optimisation with ‘in-house’ genetic algorithm software, and during wind-tunnel experimental tests, it was demonstrated that the air-flow laminarity over the wing skin was promoted, and the laminar flow was extended with up to 9% of the chord. Drag coefficient reduction of up to 9% was obtained when the morphing aileron was introduced.

In this paper, a new type of fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been designed. Thrust-vector direct force control has been introduced in three axes to make UAV exhibit superior manoeuverability in transition flight. Considering the characteristics of UAV's dynamic model, which are non-linear, non-affine, and have redundant input, a two-stage progressive optimal control allocation method is developed, which can optimise position and attitude control in synthetical, and motivate effectors to generates desired force and moments. A task-oriented weight selection scheme is proposed to make objective function suitable for different tasks and flight conditions. In addition, a general constraint strategy is designed to guarantee the feasibility of optimal allocation results, which can largely reduce the onboard computation time. Simulations show that UAV can adjust flight attitude and use control effectors in an optimal way, and demonstrating satisfactory tracking of low-speed high-manoeuver flight paths.

Aerodynamic mixing of a Mach 2 jet controlled with rectangular flat tab with length equal to the nozzle exit diameter, placed at locations 0.25D, 0.5D and 0.75D, downstream of the nozzle exit, has been studied in the presence of different levels of pressure gradients corresponding to nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) range from 3 to 8. The mixing modification associated with shifted tabs is compared with the mixing caused by the same tab at the nozzle exit (0D). The aerodynamic mixing caused by the mass transporting small-scale vortices shed from the edges of the tab placed at the shifted position is found to be appreciably larger than the tab at nozzle exit, for some levels of pressure gradient. For some other levels of nozzle expansion, mixing caused by the shifted tab is comparable to that of tab at nozzle exit. The waves present in the core of the jet controlled with shifted tab were found to be weaker than that of the jet controlled with tab at nozzle exit. At a marginally underexpanded state corresponding to NPR 8, jet core length reduction caused by the tab at 0.75D is about 39.21%, which is closer to the reduction of 40.2%, caused by the tab at 0D. The corresponding core length reduction for tab at 0.25D and 0.5D are 38.16% and 20%, respectively.
