In Favor of Simple Typology

Abstract

Proponents of the “type-variety” method of ceramic analysis are criticized for mixing analytical units and the rank hierarchies appropriate to synthesis, and for semantically substituting “type-variety” for “type” without actually changing the method of analysis.
