1 Article 310 of the Law of the Sea Convention, on declarations and statements made with a view to harmonizing national law with the Convention, in effect confirms this. One of its purposes was to facilitate ratification by states that had used nomenclature in earlier national laws that has been superseded by new terminology in the Convention such as “exclusive economic zone” and “archipelagic waters.”
