Summary

This study aimed at the phenotypic characterization of a blue goat herd, on the Carnaúba farm, Taperoá Township, Paraiba State, Brazil, so as to support the development of a breed standard on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture. In total, 62 two-year old females were evaluated with an average weight of 40.3 kg. Mean of morphometric measurements were body length (71.5±5.6 cm), hip height (59.0±4.3 cm) and chest perimeter (76.9±4.8 cm), ear length (12.6 cm). Horns are well implanted, symmetric, growing upwards, backwards and out, with small curvatures towards the front at the extremities and dark grey in colour. The animals had three distinct coat colours: light grey, bluish grey and very dark bluish grey. This study will contribute towards the strengthening of conservation works for this breed, which is in a critical state due to indiscriminate crossing with other exotic breeds.
