Personal Profile
My name is Mary O'Brien. I come from the West of Ireland, County Sligo; however, I have lived and worked in London for the past 20 years. I graduated in 1994 as an RN (registered nurse) and have worked in Post-Anaesthetic Care ever since. I received my Nursing degree from Brooks University in July 2004. Presently, I work in an Elective Orthopaedic Centre in Epsom. I am employed there as a Senior Sister in their Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). It is an amazing place to work as the experience you receive is second to none. The PACU is the backup unit for the centre; therefore, any complication you encounter post operatively is managed in the unit. Consequently, you learn how to care for cardiac, respiratory, neurological and renal complications to mention but a few. I am passionate about the environment and consider myself highly skilled with management ability. I am also a hospital advocate providing high-quality nursing care and unparalleled patient services in a unit that provides total backup and support to both physicians and surgeons. I have worked with BARNA (British Anaesthetic and Recovery Nurses Association) in the past; however, I took a break due to work commitments. I am looking forward to being part of the organisation again and now feel I can contribute much more to the Association as my nursing exposure has seriously developed.
