We demonstrate a construction that will densely embed a Moore space into a Moore space with the Baire property when this is possible. We also show how this technique generates a new ‘if and only if’ condition for determining when Moore spaces can be densely embedded in Moore spaces with the Baire property, and briefly discuss how this condition can can be used to generate new proofs that certain Moore spaces cannot be densely embedded in Moore spaces with the Baire property.

The asymptotic stability of two types of invariant solutions under a curvature flow in the whole plane is studied. First, by extending the work of others, we prove that the stationary line with nonzero slope will attract the graphical curves which surround it. Then a similar property is obtained for the grim reaper.

We investigate several inclusion relationships and other interesting properties of certain subclasses of p-valent meromorphic functions, which are defined by using a certain linear operator, involving the generalized multiplier transformations.

A new sharp general Ostrowski type inequality in L∞ norm is established. Some special cases are discussed.

Let G be a group. A subset X of G is said to be nonnilpotent if for any two distinct elements x and y in X, 〈x,y〉 is a nonnilpotent subgroup of G. If, for any other nonnilpotent subset X′ in G, ∣X∣≥∣X′ ∣, then X is said to be a maximal nonnilpotent subset and the cardinality of this subset is denoted by ω(𝒩G) . Using nilpotent nilpotentizers we find a lower bound for the cardinality of a maximal nonnilpotent subset of a finite group and apply this to the general linear group GL (n,q) . For all prime powers q we determine the cardinality of a maximal nonnilpotent subset of the projective special linear group PSL (2,q) , and we characterize all nonabelian finite simple groups G with ω(𝒩G)≤57 .

In this paper we investigate the center, radius and girth of comaximal graphs of commutative rings. We also provide some counterexamples to the results concerning the relation between isomorphisms of comaximal graphs and the rings in question. In addition, we investigate the relation between the comaximal graph of a ring and its subrings of a certain type.

The main result shows that a small perturbation of a univalent function is again a univalent function, hence a univalent function has a neighbourhood consisting entirely of univalent functions. For the particular choice of a linear function in the hypothesis of the main theorem, we obtain a corollary which is equivalent to the classical Noshiro–Warschawski–Wolff univalence criterion. We also present an application of the main result in terms of Taylor series, and we show that the hypothesis of our main result is sharp.

In this note it is shown that a result of Champion and De Pascale [‘Asymptotic behavior of nonlinear eigenvalue problems involving p-Laplacian type operators’, Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A 137 (2007), 1179–1195] implies that the variational eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian are continuous with respect to p.

We construct a sequence {An} of maximal monotone operators with a common domain and converging, uniformly on bounded subsets, to another maximal monotone operator A; however, the sequence {t−1nAn} fails to graph-converge for some null sequence {tn}.

Let 𝔞 be an ideal of a Noetherian ring R. Let s be a nonnegative integer and let M and N be two R-modules such that ExtjR(M/𝔞M,Hi𝔞(N)) is finite for all i<s and all j≥0 . We show that HomR (R/𝔞,Hs𝔞(M,N)) is finite provided ExtsR(M/𝔞M,N) is a finite R-module. In addition, for finite R-modules M and N, we prove that if Hi𝔞(M,N) is minimax for all i<s, then HomR (R/𝔞,Hs𝔞(M,N)) is finite. These are two generalizations of the result of Brodmann and Lashgari [‘A finiteness result for associated primes of local cohomology modules’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 128 (2000), 2851–2853] and a recent result due to Chu [‘Cofiniteness and finiteness of generalized local cohomology modules’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 80 (2009), 244–250]. We also introduce a generalization of the concept of cofiniteness and recover some results for it.

We extend the result obtained in E. Godelle [‘The braid rook monoid’, Internat. J. Algebra Comput.18 (2008), 779–802] to every Renner monoid: we provide a monoid presentation for Renner monoids, and we introduce a length function which extends the Coxeter length function and which behaves nicely.

We extend some results known for FC-groups to the class FC* of generalized FC-groups introduced in de Giovanni et al. [‘Groups with restricted conjugacy classes’, Serdica Math. J.28(3) (2002), 241–254]. The main theorems pertain to the join of pronormal subgroups. The relevant role that the Wielandt subgroup plays in an FC*-group is pointed out.

A map θ:A→B between algebras A and B is called n-multiplicative if θ(a1a2⋯an)=θ(a1) θ(a2)⋯θ(an) for all elements a1,a2,…,an∈A. If θ is also linear then it is called an n-homomorphism. This notion is an extension of a homomorphism. We obtain some results on automatic continuity of n-homomorphisms between certain topological algebras, as well as Banach algebras. The main results are extensions of Johnson’s theorem to surjective n-homomorphisms on topological algebras, a theorem due to C. E. Rickart in 1950 to dense range n-homomorphisms on topological algebras and two theorems due to E. Park and J. Trout in 2009 to * -preserving n-homomorphisms on lmc * -algebras.

In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof for an identity involving the triangular numbers. The proof resembles Franklin’s proof of Euler’s pentagonal number theorem.

We define and study λ-strict ideals in Banach spaces, which for λ=1 means strict ideals. Strict u-ideals in their biduals are known to have the unique ideal property; we prove that so also do λ-strict u-ideals in their biduals, at least for λ>1/2. An open question, posed by Godefroy et al. [‘Unconditional ideals in Banach spaces’, Studia Math.104 (1993), 13–59] is whether the Banach space X is a u-ideal in Ba(X), the Baire-one functions in X**, exactly when κu(X)=1; we prove that if κu(X)=1 then X is a strict u-ideal in Ba (X) , and we establish the converse in the separable case.

Recursive formulae satisfied by the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms on groups of genus zero have been investigated by several authors. Bruinier et al. [‘The arithmetic of the values of modular functions and the divisors of modular forms’, Compositio Math. 140(3) (2004), 552–566] found recurrences for SL(2,ℤ); Ahlgren [‘The theta-operator and the divisors of modular forms on genus zero subgroups’, Math. Res. Lett.10(5–6) (2003), 787–798] investigated the groups Γ0(p); Atkinson [‘Divisors of modular forms on Γ0(4)’, J. Number Theory112(1) (2005), 189–204] considered Γ0(4), and S. Y. Choi [‘The values of modular functions and modular forms’, Canad. Math. Bull.49(4) (2006), 526–535] found the corresponding formulae for the groups Γ+0(p). In this paper we generalize these results and find recursive formulae for the Fourier coefficients of any meromorphic modular form f on any genus-zero group Γ commensurable with SL(2,ℤ) , including noncongruence groups and expansions at irregular cusps. The form of the recurrence relations is well suited for the computation of the Fourier coefficients of the functions and forms on the groups which occur in monstrous and generalized moonshine. The required initial data has, in many cases, been computed by Norton (private communication).

Let Σ be a set and σ be a positive function on Σ. We introduce and study a locally convex topology β1(Σ,σ) on the space ℓ1(Σ,σ) such that the strong dual of (ℓ1(Σ,σ),β1(Σ,σ)) can be identified with the Banach space . We also show that, except for the case where Σ is finite, there are infinitely many such locally convex topologies on ℓ1(Σ,σ). Finally, we investigate some other properties of the locally convex space (ℓ1(Σ,σ),β1(Σ,σ)) , and as an application, we answer partially a question raised by A. I. Singh [‘L∞0(G)* as the second dual of the group algebra L1 (G) with a locally convex topology’, Michigan Math. J.46 (1999), 143–150].

A quantum local time, which is a generalized operator-valued process, is defined for quantum Brownian motion, and a quantum analogue of the classical Tanaka formula is then established.

Perfect colouring of isonemal fabrics by thin striping of warp and weft and the closely related topic of isonemal prefabrics that fall apart are reconsidered and their relation further explored. The catalogue of isonemal prefabrics that fall apart is extended to order 20 for those of even genus.

Here, we show that for most primes p, every residue class modulo p can be represented as a sum of 32 Fibonacci numbers.
