Addressing groups of industrial or academic experts goes with my job as editor in chief of Scientific American, and I enjoy it, but I confess that it inevitably feels peculiar. The audience consists of people who, almost by definition, have expertise or experience in the subjects of discussion. Why should anyone listen to me?
