EVALUATION OF INSECTICIDE-TREATED BRAN BAITS FOR GRASSHOPPER CONTROL IN SASKATCHEWAN (ORTHOPTERA: ACRIDIDAE)1

Abstract

Bran treated with four different insecticides was field-tested as a crop protection measure against mainly third instar grasshopper populations composed mostly of Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fab.). The order of toxicity of these four insecticides was dimethoate 〉 fenvalerate 〉 propoxur 〉 pyridaphenthion. Five dosages of dimethoate were tested against mainly adult grasshopper populations. Rates of mortality due to both aqueous sprays (previously published results) and bran baits were compared. Degradation of both dimethoate and fenvalerate mixed with bran was small when stored in the laboratory at either 1°C or 20°C.

Résumé

On a testé en plein champ des appâts de son traité par quatre insecticides comme moyen de défense des cultures contre le troisième stade larvaire de populations de criquets composées surtout de Melanopus sanguinipes (Fab.). Ces insecticides par ordre de toxicité décroissante sont le diméthoate, le fenvalerate, le propoxur et le pyridaphenthion. Cinq doses de diméthoate ont été testées, principalement contre des populations adultes de criquets. On a composé les taux de mortalité due aux pulvérisations aqueuses (résultats déjà publiés) et aux appâts de son. La dégradation du diméthoate et du fenvalérate mélangés au son est faible lorsqu’on conserve le mélange en laboratoire à 1 ou 20°C.
