REVISION OF THE NEARCTIC SPECIES OF TRICHOCLINOCERA COLLIN (DIPTERA: EMPIDIDAE; CLINOCERINAE)

Abstract

There are 16 species of Trichoclinocera Collin recognized from the Nearctic region, including eight new species. Four of six species-groups of Trichoclinocera are recognized in the Nearctic region, with the following included species: (1) T. comata group — T. cascadensis sp.nov. (type-locality Starvation Creek, Oregon, U.S.A.), T. comata (Melander) comb.nov., and T. rupestris sp.nov. (type-locality Newton Creek, Wyoming, U.S.A.); (2) T. dolicheretma group — T. dolicheretma (Melander); (3) T. lapponica group — T. lapponica (Ringdahl) comb.nov.; (4) T. longipes group — T. agilis sp.nov. (type-locality Fall Creek Falls, Tennessee, U.S.A.), T. ctenistes (Melander), T. dasycoxa sp.nov. (type-locality Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), T. falcata sp.nov. (type-locality Gatineau Park, Quebec, Canada), T. fumosa (Vaillant) comb.nov., T. hamifera (Melander), T. longipes (Walker). T. minor (Melander), T. ozarkensis sp.nov. (type-locality Haw Creek Falls, Arkansas, U.S.A.), and T. pectinifemur sp.nov. (type-locality Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.). The following new synonyms are proposed: T. brunnipennis (Melander) = T. dolicheretma; and Seguyella saltans (Vaillant) = T. hamifera. Lectotypes are designated for T. comata, T. ctenistes, T. dolicheretma, T. brunnipennis, T. hamifera, T. lapponica, and T. stackelbergi Collin. Seguyella Vaillant and Acanthoclinocera Saigusa are newly synonymized with Trichoclinocera and all species formerly placed in these genera are transferred to Trichoclinocera, except Acanthoclinocera glaucescens (Brunetti) which is transferred as Wiedemannia glaucescens (Brunetti) comb.nov.This revision includes a key to Nearctic species, a description of each species, and maps of species distributions. Homologies of male terminalia of Clinocerinae are summarized and the first descriptions of the immature stages of species of Trichoclinocera also are provided. A world list of described species of Trichoclinocera is provided and all species are assigned to one of six species-groups, except T. cummingi sp.nov. (type-locality Robber’s Cave, Oklahoma. U.S.A.), T. fluviatilis (Brunetti) comb.nov., T. fuscipennis Saigusa, and T. maewa Smith, which remain unplaced. The monophyly of Trichoclinocera is justified and phylogenetic relationships to the remaining Clinocerinae and among species-groups are discussed.

Le genre Trichoclinocera Collin compte 16 espèces dans la région néarctique et huit d’entre elles sont nouvelles. Quatre des six groupes d’espèces sont représentés dans la région néarctique : (1) le groupe T. comataT. cascadensis sp.nov. (localité-type, Starvation Creek, Oregon, É.-U.), T. comata (Melander) comb.nov. et T. rupestris sp.nov. (localité-type, Newton Creek, Wyoming, É.-U.), (2) le groupe T. dolicheretmaT. dolicheretma (Melander), (3) le groupe T. lapponicaT. lapponica (Ringdahl) comb.nov., (4) le groupe T. longipesT. agilis sp.nov. (localité-type, Fall Creek Falls, Tennessee, É.-U.). T. ctenistes (Melander), T. dasycoxa sp.nov. (localité-type, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), T. falcata sp.nov. (localité-type, Parc de la Gatineau, Québec, Canada), T. fumosa (Vaillant) comb.nov., T. hamifera (Melander), T. longipes (Walker), T. minor (Melander), T. ozarkensis sp.nov. (localité-type, Haw Creek Falls, Arkansas, É.-U.) et T. pectinifemur sp.nov. (localité-type, Phoenixville, Pennsylvanie, É.-U.). Les synonymes suivants sont proposés : T. brunnipennis (Melander) = T. dolicheretma et Seguyella saltans (Vaillant) = T. hamifera. Des lectotypes de T. comata, T. ctenistes, T. dolicheretma, T. brunnipennis, T. hamifera, T. lapponica et T. stackelbergi Collin ont été désignés. Seguyella Vaillant et Acanthoclinocera Saigusa deviennent synonymes de Trichoclinocera et toutes les espèces de ces genres sont transférées au genre Trichoclinocera, sauf Acanthoclinocera glaucescens (Brunetti), qui devient Wiedemannia glaucescens (Brunetti) comb.nov.On trouvera dans cette révision une clé des espèces néarctiques ainsi qu’une description et une carte de répartition de chacune des espèces. Les homologies des organes terminaux des mâles sont exposées brièvement et des descriptions encore inédites des stades immatures des espèces de Trichoclinocera sont présentées. Une liste des espèces de Trichoclinocera à l’échelle mondiale est dressée et toutes les espèces sont assignées à l’un des six groupes, à l’exception de T. cummingi sp.nov. (localité-type, Robber’s Cave, Oklahoma, É.-U.), T. fuscipennis Saigusa et T. maewa Smith, dont la position n’a pas été déterminée. La nature monophylétique du genre Trichoclinocera est démontrée et les relations phylogénétiques entre ce genre et les autres Clinocerinae et entre les groupes d’espèces sont examinées.
