As a rule, we do not publish replies to reviews of books; and it is hard to believe that Mr. Johnson's sprightly review has either tarnished Mr. James's enviable reputation or dampened interest in his book. However, Mr. Plumptre's account of the position of government economists is extraordinarily important especially when, as in Canada at present, a large proportion of the economists of the country are employed by governments. Mr. Plumptre's note is published, therefore, in the hope that it may help to encourage government economists to write articles and books and to enable the public to read them with greater understanding.
