Six hundred and forty two randomly selected elderly living in the various communities which make up the Capital Regional District of British Columbia were interviewed during the summer of 1984. This secondary analysis of those data focuses on the respondents' perceptions of problems they were having such as transportation, health, finances and also on their awareness of, or involvement with, a range of community services including recreation, health, social and transportation. Data revealed that the elderly were very aware of most of the services in the community but that involvement with services was related to health status, age, gender, marital status and income.

Gray Power came into prominence in the 1970s and has received considerable attention among social gerontologists. This paper reviews studies on gray power, political consciousness among the elderly and advocacy by organizations on behalf of older people, and it considers their implications for further research. Constructing the agenda for future research on gray power requires recognizing the diversity of older people and the life-course context through which individuals shape their concepts of old age and its meaning. Studies on political power need to be longitudinal as well as cross-sectional. Furthermore, studies on the political power of older people should consider how the young and middle-aged perceive their power relative to issues of common concern. Finally the studies of age advocacy groups should be linked with those of other advocacy organizations involved in social change (e.g. the disabled). The paper concludes that research on gray power should be fostered along inter-disciplinary lines of inquiry.

A sample of 334 people aged 56 and over living in the Capital Regional District of B. C. (Greater Victoria) were interviewed about their supportive social network. Four social supportive roles were investigated: caretaker, helper, confidant, and advisor.

Most of the sample had network members to fulfil these roles, however, in the lives of about one-fifth of the respondents, support in one or more of these areas was not available. Although most of the respondents in excellent or good health felt no need for more people in certain supportive roles, more people with fair or poor health expressed a need for more people in their supportive networks.

This research supports earlier findings about the vulnerability of women who are widowed and over 74 years old. They are the group most in need of socially supportive networks.

Surgical care of elderly persons focuses many of the difficult legal and ethical dilemmas that have arisen in modern medicine. Such issues arise at both macro and micro levels. This paper explores four micro level areas involving physician-patient interaction. These are: informed consent, dying patients, pain relief treatment and medical research, when the patients involved are elderly persons.

The discussion of informed consent includes consideration of refusal of treatment, scope of information, voluntariness, coercion and competency. In particular, the basic presumptions are articulated and variations in the application of these concepts, when aged persons are involved, and justification of such variations, are considered. Within the topic of dying elderly persons, the “living will” and “durable powers of attorney” are discussed. The obligation to provide pain relief treatment can be particularly important in the context of terminally ill and dying persons and it is suggested that there should be a legal obligation to provide such treatment, including in some circumstances, where the treatment could possibly, or even is likely to, shorten life. Finally, aged persons' participation in medical research and the special problems that can be involved in this are addressed.

In conclusion, it is suggested that the greater visibility and identification of old persons needing surgery than of those needing some other forms of medical care is likely to make this an important arena for setting far-reaching precedents regarding humane approaches to, and human rights in, access to and provision of medical care.

Data from the Ontario Longitudinal Study of Aging were analyzed to examine the associations of the independent variables income, income change, education, smoking and perceived health with the dependent variable mortality during a ten year follow-up beginning in 1969. The analyses investigate the associations of the independent variables with deaths, with other causes of attrition and with all causes of attrition. The results indicate that smoking is the strongest predictor of mortality, and income is the strongest socioeconomic predictor. The analyses also show that perceived health measured prior to the mortality follow-up masks the association between the independent variables and mortality. Since the exclusion of the perceived health variable did not appreciably reduce the fit of the models, it was omitted from further analyses. The distributions of mortality for the various independent variables differed appreciably between models using deaths and all causes, but the bivariate and multivariate associations between variables were relatively unaffected by the alternative methods of operationalizing the dependent variable.

Sixteen healthy community residing elderly adults and 16 university students completed the Locomotor Maze test of extrapersonal orientation. They were given maps with nine location dots in a 3 × 3 matrix that corresponded to nine red discs on the floor of the experimental room. Participants were asked to walk the path outlined on each map without turning the map. Six maps were presented with paths increasing one segment in length with each subsequent map. The older adults committed more errors on the longer maps and took more time to make direction choices than young people. Because participants were free to consult the map throughout each trial, reliance on memory for landmaks and routes that characterizes earlier research was eliminated. It is suggested that the decreased performance shown by elderly adults on this task may be due to difficulty with working memory and mental rotation or increased field dependence.

A stratified random sample of 400 community-dwelling older persons were asked whether they like or dislike anything about being their age and if they have any worries about growing older. The results of multivariate analysis show significant relationships between the dependent variables and several respondent charaderistics including age, subjective health, expectations of older age, and gender. A negative view of aging appears to be associated with experiencing age-related declines. Overall, despite some diversity, the respondents tend to hold a positive view of old age that is coupled with a realistic appreciation of the shortcomings this stage of life may bring.

Aging with grace and confidence would, for most people, be facilitated by the assurance that life would conclude with dignity. Unfortunately, such assurance is not available, especially if diminished competence does not allow the expression of a refusal to the continued administration of medical treatment. Health care professionals maintaining mentally incompetent patients on life supports should be aware of the legal risks of terminating treatment without valid informed consent. Yet who can give such consent? Does our law provide any guidance?

This paper will examine the Canadian legal realities of obtaining valid informed consent to cessation of medical treatment for the terminally or chronically ill. References will be made to The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the leading American jurisprudence.

A group of Canadian senior citizens (n = 22) who bicycled 7700 km across Canada, from Victoria, B.C. to St. Johns, Newfoundland, over 100 days in the summer of 1983 were the subjects of this study. Each was tested on three occasions: 2 days prior to commencement of the tour, at the geographical mid-point of the tour and within 2 days of tour completion. Comprehensive anthropometric data were collected along with evaluation of fitness and blood chemistry on all three testing occasions. Participants were also asked a series of questions designed to ascertain positive and negative psycho-social experiences and to assess their anxiety level. Generally the cyclists reated well to the tour, exhibiting objective evidence of increased fitness in the absence of negative physical or psychological changes. Self-report data indicated that subjects generally enjoyed the tour, felt their endurance had increased, and perceived other improvements such as increased self-confidence, reduced anxiety, and improved appetite.

This paper presents a French adaptation of the Metamemory in Adulthood (MIA) instrument. The purpose of the study was to assess the psychometric qualities of the French version and to test its validity by replicating age and sex differences in a large sample of French speaking adults. The MIA was administered to 120 males and 185 females, aged between 18 and 95. The initial factor structure of the MIA was replicated and the eight metamemory dimensions were identified, although there was some overlap between the dimensions. The internal consistency of the scales was assessed by computing Cronbach's alpha coefficients; seven of the eight scales were found to be reliable. The intercorrelations between the dimensions were also examined and revealed that each scale is tapping a specific aspect of metamemory. Finally, the analyses of variance confirmed the existence of significant age differences on five scales of the MIA and sex differences on three dimensions.

This paper focuses on ways that adult children and children-in-law mediate contact between grandmothers and grandchildren, following marriage breakdown and remarriage in the middle generation. A qualitative analysis of face-to-face contact between 110 grandmother-grandchild pairs was conducted. Findings showed that adult children have a more direct influence on visiting, by arranging or obstructing visits between grandmothers and grandchildren. The influence of first or second children-in-law was found to be more indirect. By preventing an estranged spouse from seeing his or her child, custodial children-in-law could also be preventing a grandmother's access to her grandchild, if she depended on her noncustodial child to bring the grandchild to see her when he or she exercised visiting rights. Children-in-law could also act as intermediaries through their absence as well as through their presence. These findings, as well as ways that grandparents can negotiate relationships with adult children and children-in-law, are discussed. Especially noted is the value of monitoring communication exchanges, maintaining friendly relationships with children-in-law and step-grandchildren, and acting as resources to the family.

Utilization of an array of health and social services from formal and informal sources is studied here 1) to identify profiles of services utilization and 2) to predict the location of elderly in these profiles by a set of independent variables such as the sociodemographic characteristics of the elderly, their physical and mental health status and the density of their social support network. Two samples of non-institutionalized elderly living in two middle-sized towns were drawn from the universal old-age Canadian pension scheme. Their utilization of hospital, medical and pharmaceutical services was assessed, and their use of services for help with adivities of daily living was measured by a set of six indicators. A cluster analysis was run to identify profites of services utilization, and a discriminant analysis used the profiles as the criterion to be predicted by a set of variables. Five profiles of utilization were obtained; four of them identified elderly with very few experiences of services utilization and a fifth, a low number of elderly with utilization of all of the services listed in this study. Most of the elderly were users of a small subset of medical and social services. The location of elderly in the profiles was predicted by physical health status, coresidence and income. These results show that health and social services from both formal and informal sources are utilized by elderly. It is suggested that new types of formal agencies which consider the simultaneous delivery of social and health services will succeed inasmuch as they have the ability to interact with a system of informal care.

It has been suggested that an exaggeration of the target age effect is obtained when the same respondents judge multiple age groups rather than only one age group. In the present study each of 1200 undergraduates rated a young, middle-aged, or old target on the 32 bipolar adjective pairs of the Aging Semantic Differential (ASD; Rosencranz & McNevin, 1969). An additional 200 undergraduates rated all three target age groups on the ASD. The ASD was scored in terms of the three dimensions reported by its authors. In the isolated judgment condition young targets were rated highest on the Instrumental-Ineffective and Personal Acceptability-Unacceptability dimensions followed, in both cases, by middle-aged and then by old targets; on the Autonomous-Dependent dimension, middle-aged targets were rated higher than both young and old targets. The hypothesized exaggeration of the target age effect in the comparative judgment condition was obtained for the descriptive dimensions (Instrumental-Ineffective and Autonomous-Dependent) but not for the evaluative dimension (Personal Acceptability-Unacceptability) of the ASD. Possible explanations for why judgment context might affect descriptive but not evaluative assessments of target age groups are discussed.

In response to recent claims for the role of the humanities in understanding aging, this paper identifies certain works of fiction which illustrate and dramatize such concepts as life review and integrity. In its consideration of novels by Muriel Spark, Tillie Olsen, Margaret Laurence, and Jessica Anderson, the essay argues that complex fiction about old persons refuses to over-simplify or sentimentalize the problems of aging but often finds poetic and symbolic means of affirming the positive values of life review and spiritual growth at the end of life's journey.
