We show that, even under very favourable hypotheses, a polygonal product of finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups amalgamating infinite cyclic subgroups is, in general, not residually finite, thus answering negatively a question of C. Y. Tang. A second example shows similar kinds of limitations apply even when the factors of the product are free abelian groups.

An atomic integral domain with conjugation has unique (in the sense of Theorem 6 below) factorization of atomic factors if it is an LCM domain. If the LCM hypothesis is dropped not even the number of atomic factors in a complete factorization of an element need be unique.

We introduce sectional projectivity, which appears to be the correct notion of projectivity when working with orthomodularlattices. We prove some positive results for varieties of OMLs satisfying various finiteness conditions, namely that every finite OML in such a variety is sectionally projective. In contrast, we prove that the eight element modular ortholattice, MO 3, is not projective in the variety of modular ortholattices.

An atomic integral domain D is a half-factorial domain (HFD) if for any irreducible elements α1,..., αn, β1,..., βm of D with α1... αn = β1 ...βm, then n = m. In [3], Anderson, Anderson, and Zafrullah explore factorization problems in overrings of HFDs and ask whether a localization of a HFD is again a HFD. We construct an example of a Dedekind domain which is a HFD, but with a localization which is not a HFD. We also give an example of a Dedekind domain where each localization is a HFD, but with an overring which is not a HFD.

Let LSC(X) denote the set of extended real valued lower semicontinuous functions on a metrizable space X. If f, f1, f2, f3,... is a sequence in LSC(X), we say 〈fn〉 is epi-convergent to f provided the sequence of epigraphs 〈epi fn〉 is Kuratowski- Painlevé convergent to epi f. In this note we address the following question: what conditions on f and/or on X are necessary and sufficient for this mode of convergence to force epigraphical convergence with respect to the stronger Hausdorff metric and Vietoris topologies?

Let (M, °T″) be a compact strongly pseudo-convex CR-manifold with trivial canonical line bundle. Then, in [A-M2], a weak version of the Bogomolov type theorem for deformations of CR-structures was shown by an analogy of the Tian- Todorov method. In this paper, we show that: in the very strict sense, there is a counterexample.

In [8], the relations between this quantity and the topology of M are investigated, especially in the case of μ0(K) being small (where the study relies on Oda's classification of triangulations of 𝕊2 up to eight vertices—see [9]). In the present paper, the attention is fixed upon the average edge order of coloured triangulations; surprisingly enough, the obtained results are perfectly analogous to Luo-Stong' ones, and may be proved with little effort by means of edge-coloured graphs representing manifolds.

We show that almost all perturbations P — λ, λ € C, of an arbitrary constant coefficient partial differential operator P are globally hypoelliptic on the torus. We also give a characterization of the values λ € C for which the operator is globally hypoelliptic; in particular, we show that the addition of a term of order zero may destroy the property of global hypoellipticity of operators of principal type, contrary to that happens with the usual (local) hypoellipticity.

If R is a ring and S ⊆ R, a mapping f:R —> R is called strong commutativity- preserving (scp) on S if [x, y] = [f(x),f(y)] for all x,y € S. We investigate commutativity in prime and semiprime rings admitting a derivation or an endomorphism which is scp on a nonzero right ideal.

Let R be an integral domain with quotient field K. If R has an overling S ≠ K, such that S[X] is integrally closed, then the "algebraic degree" of K((X)) over the quotient field of R[X] is infinite. In particular, it holds for completely integrally closed domain or Noetherian domain R.

The mapping which assigns to each existence variety of locally inverse semigroups the class of all pseudosemilattices of idempotents of members of is shown to be a complete, surjective homomorphism from the lattice of existence varieties of locally inverse semigroups onto the lattice of varieties of pseudosemilattices.

Workable necessary and sufficient conditions for a non-negative matrix to be a bounded operator from lp to lq when 1 < q ≤ p < ∞ are discussed. Alternative proofs are given for some known results, thereby filling a gap in the proof of the case p = q of a result of Koskela's. The case 1 < q < p < ∞ of Koskela's result is refined, and a weakened form of the Vere-Jones conjecture concerning matrix operators on lp is shown to be false.

Let H be a Hilbert space, dim H ≥ 3, and B(H) the algebra of all bounded linear operators on H. We characterize bijective linear mappings on B(H) that preserve normal operators.

We consider simple complex Lie algebras extended over the commutative ring C[z,(z — a1)-1, . . . ,(z — an)-1] where a1, . . . ,an ∊ C. We compute the universal central extensions of these Lie algebras and present explicit commutation relations for these extensions. These algebras generalize the untwisted affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras, which correspond to the case n = 1, a1 = 0.

A new proof is given for the weak amenability of the group algebras of locally compact groups.

For each positive integer r ≥ q, let Then for every ε > 0 and N ≥ N(r, ε), we construct a set A of k-th powers such that |A| ≤ (r(2 + ε)r + l)N1/(k+r) and every nonnegative integer n ≤ N is the sum of k-th powers in A. Some related results are also obtained.

It is proven that the dimensions of the homogeneous summands of a nontrivial Z graded module for an infinité dimensional Heisenberg algebra on which a central element acts as nonzero scalar are unbounded. This result is then applied to show that the central elements of an affine Lie algebra act trivially on any indecomposable diagonalizable module whose weight spaces are of bounded dimension.

In this paper it is shown that the maximal spectral type of a general rank one transformation is given by a kind of generalized Riesz product, with possibly some discrete measure.

In this paper we characterize maps f: R —> R where R is semiprime, f is additive, and [f(x),f(y)] = [x,y] for all x,y ∊ R. It is shown that f(x) = λx + ξ(x) where λ ∊ C, λ2 = 1, and ξ: R —> C is additive where C is the extended centroid of R.
