In discussing the dance mentioned, Mr. Stern ended our conversation by off handedly describing himself as the “extraordinarily dashing Erik Stern.” This joke by Stern underscores my point that for heterosexual male dancers some of the extreme stereotypes of male behavior, such as Burt notes in Graham's men, are now laughable in their conceptual limits. In fact, men who are maintaining active dance careers in the late twentieth century and also functioning as fathers and husbands represent a unique group who must juggle a variety of social and cultural expectations as they pursue their art. Unfortunately, Burt does not access this group.
