The trace fossils of the Tumblagooda Sandstone (?late Silurian) of Kalbarri, Western Australia are spectacular in their variety and preservation. They provide a unique insight into the activities of the early invaders of terrestrial environments, and reveal the presence of a diverse fauna dominated by arthropods. Within the Formation trace fossil assemblages can be related to fluvial, aeolian and marine sand-dominated environments. Two distinct and diverse ichnofaunas are recognised.

The Heimdallia–Diplichnites Ichnofauna occurs in sandstones deposited in broad low sinuosity braided fluvial channels, between which were mixed aeolian and waterlain sandsheets, small aeolian dunes and flooded interdune and deflation hollows. Heimdallia is the major bioturbator, favouring shallow pools. Other burrows include Tumblagoodichnus (gen. nov.), Diplocraterion, Skolithos, Beaconites and Didymaulyponomos. Arthropod trackways (Diplichnites) occur on surfaces of waterlain sands and on foreset bedding of aeolian dunes, and represent some of the earliest reported terrestrial trackways. Other trackways include Paleohelcura and Protichnites, and the digging traces Selenichnites and Rusophycus are also present. At least ten types of arthropods are required to produce the observed traces. Myriapods, eurypterids, euthycarcinoids, xiphosurids and scorpionids are considered responsible for the trackway assemblage.

The Skolithos–Diplocraterion Ichnofauna occurs at the top of the exposed section in sandstones that overlie a thick fluvial sequence containing few traces. The strata are considered to represent marine influence at a fluvial/marine transition. They show variable trough cross-bedding, complex planar cross-bedding with down-climbing sets, ripple lamination, and fining-up sequences with bioturbated tops. Traces are dominated by crowded Skolithos up to 1 m long, together with two forms of Diplocraterion. Daedalus and Lunatubichnus (gen. nov.) burrows occur in a few beds and Aulichnites trails cover some foreset surfaces of cross-bedding.

The trace fossils and the sedimentology of the Tumblagooda Sandstone bear a remarkable similarity to those of the lower part of the Taylor Group of Antarctica, which is probably Devonian in age. It is suggested that the two represent a similar age, stratigraphy, and range of environments on the margins of Gondwana. Large unvegetated fluvial outwash plains with variable aeolian influence were essentially coastal in character and fluvial/marine transitions occur in sand-rich environments. The animals responsible for the traces inhabited coastal areas but many could survive outwith marine influence, and arthropods responsible for some types of Diplichnites trackways walked out of water.

The rich diversity of trackways attributable to arthropods illustrate that the invasion of terrestrial environments by arthropods, particularly large forms, was well-established by the beginning of the Devonian. The basis of the food chain was algal and bacterial films which bound the surface sediment in freshwater pools.

The massive pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-sphalerite deposit of Outokumpu, comprising the Keretti and Vuonos orebodies, is a deformed and metamorphosed strata-bound mass associated with mineralised stockworks. Mobilisation of much of the ore followed formation of large recumbent isoclinal folds that are the major structures of the surrounding rocks and associated with the modification of originally flat saucer-shaped ore lenses into elongate ruler-shaped masses. Further modification of shape took place at the mobilisation stage with much of the pyrrhotitic ore, particularly, now occupying the thickest parts of the orebodies in the form of breccia or microbreccia. In many parts gross original characters still exist and the pyritic and pyrrhotitic constituents of the ore have survived as separate entities while locally the pyritic ore retains pre-deformational characteristics and consistent stratigraphic position within a thin horizon.

Both ore and country rocks show evidence of extensive polyphase deformation with the effects of six fold phases shown in the ore. Mineral assemblages in the country rocks indicate a middle amphibolite facies peak of metamorphism. The serpentinite-black schist-carbonate-quartzite rock assemblage, with which the ore is associated, was tectonically incorporated within the regionally extensive mica schist by even earlier subhorizontal thrusting. This is related to the movement of a thrust nappe with the interdigitation of an ocean-floor ophiolite assemblage and flysch deposited during ocean closure associated with Svecokarelian tectonism.

The original formation of the Keretti and Vuonos sulphide masses took place in a marine exhalative environment with a pyritic layer overlying a pyrrhotitic layer in each of the two c. 4 km diameter irregularly oval-shaped depressions whose centres were c. 8 km apart. The mineralised stockwork below each mass represents the upper parts of the conduit for metalbearing fluids in a convective system.

The Caledonian plutonic rocks of Western Scotland form a well-defined group, ranging from ultrabasic to acid types, which have been studied in detail by a number of petrologists. They form intrusions of varying size, usually composite and frequently, at least, having the habit of ring complexes. The rock types include peridotites and pyroxenites, gabbros, hornblendite and appinite, appinitic diorites, pyroxene-mica diorites, hornblende-biotite diorite, various hornblende-biotite grandiorites, biotite adamellite and muscovite-biotite adamellite, while the final stage is represented by numerous veins of aplite and rare pegmatites.

Twelve localities of Lower Carboniferous strata in Scotland (Loch Humphrey Burn, Glenarbuck, Pettycur, Oxroad Bay and the Berwickshire localities of Cove, Burnmouth, Gavinton, Edrom, Foulden) and in France (Esnost, Roannais, Montagne Noire) have been investigated with particular regard to their anatomically preserved floras. New data on the composition and preservation of the assemblages, their geological setting and stratigraphical age, using palynology in particular, are presented. Present data suggest that four successive groups of floras obtained from these localities can be recognised: from the Montagne Noire (mid to late Tournaisian), from the Berwickshire localities and Oxroad Bay (late Tournaisian to early Viséan), from Loch Humphrey Burn and possibly Glenarbuck (mid Viséan) and from Roannais, Esnost, and Pettycur (late Viséan). The similarities and differences between the floras are discussed with particular emphasis on stratigraphical as opposed to ecological controls. Comparisons are made with the New Albany Shale floras of the U.S.A., the Saalfeld and Glätzish-Falkenberg floras from the German Democratic Republic. The data suggest that the ferns and pteridosperms show the most striking changes through the Lower Carboniferous strata.

In a previous paper (Andrews and Westoll 1970) the postcranial skeleton of the best known rhipidistian, Eusthenopteron, was described, and its bearing on the origin of the tetrapod postcranial skeleton discussed. The postcranial remains of other Rhipidistia are now described as far as they are known, and comparisons are made with Eusthenopteron and other forms where relevant. Possible modes of function are considered in relation to the habitats in which these fishes may have lived. These studies have made it necessary to revise rhipidistian classification; the Family Rhizodontidae is re-defined and placed alone in a third Order of Rhipidistia (the Rhizodontida, alongside the better known Osteolepidida and Holoptychiida). Fresh insight has been gained into the following morphological problems: the composition of the osteolepid ring-like centrum, the origin of the tetrapod scapular blade and the diphyletic origin of the tetrapods.

Scottish streams of low sinuosity have four kinds of bars, three are bank-attached (lateral), and one is medial. Bar type is related to sinuosity, and as streams often increase in sinuosity away from source, there tends to be a variation in bar type successively downstream. The morphology and structure of the bars are related to grain size—gravel bars do not have the same bed forms and structures as those made of sand—and variations in flow stage. The bar head, composed mostly of gravel, forms during the high-flow stage, and as the flow falls so sediments of the lee face record the changing flow pattern. With further drop in water level the locus of sedimentation shifts to the bar tail where the dwindling flow may build diversely oriented bed forms and structures. Changes in the rate of fall, or differences in the maximum rise of water level, result in different proportions of sediment type being deposited.

The mean orientation of the directional structures is not always alined with the mean stream direction, and the diversity of orientation is comparable with the diversity in orientation of directional structures in meandering streams. The variability in orientation is due to the effects of flood-produced bed forms in diverting the low-stage flow, stream sinuosity, and the changing orientation of the channel as it sweeps across the floodplain.

Coccosteus cuspidatus is shown to be the correct name for the arthrodire commonly referred to as Coccosteus decipiens. An almost complete account of the osteology of this species is given and aspects of the restored head, thoracic armour, fins and posterior unarmoured region, the dermal ornamentation, neuromast system and musculature are discussed; the snout, dermal bones of the palate and neural endocranium receive special treatment in view of the part these structures have played in the interpretation of the relationships of the Arthrodira. Changes in the proportions of certain bones during growth are noted and the mode of life is considered. The family Coccosteidae is redefined; the genus Coccosteus and the type species C. cuspidatus are defined and consideration is given to other species included in this genus.

Calc-alkaline lamprophyres are porphyritic dyke-rocks, richer in amphibole, biotite, ultramark elements (Mg, Cr, Ni) and incompatible elements (K, F, P, Rb, Sr, Zn, Nb, Ba, REE, Th, U) than other rocks of comparable colour index (35–67) or % SiO2 (46–57). Field and petrological criteria are suggested for identifying them uniquely. New average compositions, based on some 600 screened analyses, confirm the chemical variability but possible heteromorphism of vogesites, kersantites, spessartites and some minettes. Calc-alkaline lamprophyres probably crystallise from volatile-rich, crystal-laden fluids. Microdioritic ‘porphyrites’, K-rich syenites and quartz-feldspar porphyries commonly form from these fluids by acidic hybridisation, and more rarely by in situ differentiation. Calc-alkaline lamprophyres have close compositional equivalents among, for example, shonkinites and absarokites, but not among kimberlites or common plutonie or volcanic rocks. They are compositionally more ‘crustal’ than lamproites and leucitites, despite some overlap. They are far more widespread than other K-rich or alkaline rocks. Three genetic petrological associations are confirmed: with calc-alkaline granitoid plutons (A), with shoshonitic volcanic and subvolcanic suites (B), and with appinite—breccia-pipe complexes (C). Most calc-alkaline lamprophyres, from association A, perhaps form by crustal modification of primary lamproitic or leucititic magmas; a very few, carrying rare mantle-type xenoliths, may represent relatively unmodified, but otherwise similar, primary magmas. Those of association B may form merely by volatile enrichment of shoshonitic magmas during subvolcanic crystallisation. Different origins for minettes in these associations are suggested by compositional differences, revealed by discriminant analysis.

Size and composition (bulk metal ratios) of magmatic hydrothermal mineral deposits are affected by a number of chemical and physical processes including the nature of the source region and mode of emplacement. At shallow levels, rising plumes of vapour bubbles + melt, and the advection of water through interconnected vapour bubbles, allows access of the magmatic aqueous phase to the upper reaches of a magma chamber. These processes are operative at shallow levels where low water solubility and high molar volume for water make these processes more efficient.

Partitioning experiments suggest that oxygen fugacity-dependent crystal/melt partitioning of ore metals leads to different efficiencies of removal of Cu, W, and Mo from silicate melts into ore-forming aqueous fluids. For example, the Mo/W ratio in magmatic hydrothermal deposits should increase as the oxygen fugacity of the magma increases. Further, Cu should behave as a crystal-compatible element in H2O-undersaturated, sulfide-saturated felsic magmas with fO2 NNO + 1 due to the strong partitioning of Cu from the melt into pyrrhotite.

Cycling of oxidised, hydrated, sulfidised and Cl-enriched oceanic crust into mantle can give rise to magmas that contain S but are oxidised (≥NNO). The combination of high oxidation state, relatively hydrous but shallow conditions and a high Cl/H2O ratio leads to saturation with respect to H2O early during crystallisation, and loss of a large proportion of magmatic Cu to the aqueous phase. Ores formed from these oxidised magmas also possess high Mo/W ratios due to the effect of oxygen fugacity on the sequestering of Mo vs W.

In less oxidised magmas, Cu and Mo are partitioned into sulfides and Ti-bearing phases, respectively, resulting in lower efficiencies of removal of Cu and Mo from melts into aqueous fluids. Further, the partitioning of W into crystallising phases is reduced, producing a more efficient removal of W into ore-forming fluids. This ultimately leads to mineral deposits with higher W/(Mo + Cu) ratios relative to deposits associated with more oxidised systems. Silicic, high-F magmas with fO2 = NNO can be found in tensional environments (e.g. rocks associated with the Climax-type deposits of the Colorado Mineral Belt). High HF/H2O activity ratios in the source regions yield melts that evolve an aqueous phase late during crystallisation, leading to relatively low ratios of compatible/incompatible elements in the melt at H2O saturation.

India–Asia collision resulted in crustal thickening and shortening, metamorphism and partial melting along the 2200 km-long Himalayan range. In the core of the Greater Himalaya, widespread in situ partial melting in sillimanite+K-feldspar gneisses resulted in formation of migmatites and Ms+Bt+Grt+Tur±Crd±Sil leucogranites, mainly by muscovite dehydration melting. Melting occurred at shallow depths (4–6 kbar; 15–20 km depth) in the middle crust, but not in the lower crust. 87Sr/86Sr ratios of leucogranites are very high (0·74–0·79) and heterogeneous, indicating a 100 crustal protolith. Melts were sourced from fertile muscovite-bearing pelites and quartzo-feldspathic gneisses of the Neo-Proterozoic Haimanta–Cheka Formations. Melting was induced through a combination of thermal relaxation due to crustal thickening and from high internal heat production rates within the Proterozoic source rocks in the middle crust. Himalayan granites have highly radiogenic Pb isotopes and extremely high uranium concentrations. Little or no heat was derived either from the mantle or from shear heating along thrust faults. Mid-crustal melting triggered southward ductile extrusion (channel flow) of a mid-crustal layer bounded by a crustal-scale thrust fault and shear zone (Main Central Thrust; MCT) along the base, and a low-angle ductile shear zone and normal fault (South Tibetan Detachment; STD) along the top. Multi-system thermochronology (U–Pb, Sm–Nd, 40Ar–39Ar and fission track dating) show that partial melting spanned ̃24–15 Ma and triggered mid-crustal flow between the simultaneously active shear zones of the MCT and STD. Granite melting was restricted in both time (Early Miocene) and space (middle crust) along the entire length of the Himalaya. Melts were channelled up via hydraulic fracturing into sheeted sill complexes from the underthrust Indian plate source beneath southern Tibet, and intruded for up to 100 km parallel to the foliation in the host sillimanite gneisses. Crystallisation of the leucogranites was immediately followed by rapid exhumation, cooling and enhanced erosion during the Early–Middle Miocene.

To form a granite pluton, the felsic melt produced by partial melting of the middle and lower continental crust must separate from its source and residuum. This can happen in three ways: (1) simple melt segregation, where only the melt fraction moves; (2) magma mobility, in which all the melt and residuum move together; and (3) magma mobility with melt segregation, in which the melt and residuum move together as a magma, but become separated during flow. The first mechanism applies to metatexite migmatites and the other two to diatexite migmatites, but the primary driving forces for each are deviatoric stresses related to regional-scale deformation. Neither of the first two mechanisms generates parental granite magmas. In the first mechanism segregation is so effective that the resulting magmas are too depleted in FeOT, MgO, Rb, Zr, Th and the REEs, and in the second no segregation occurs. Only the third mechanism produces magmas with compositions comparable with parental granites, and occurs at a large enough scale in the highest grade parts of migmatite terranes, to be considered representative of the segregation processes occurring in the source regions of granites.

A new hypothesis of the relationships between arachnomorph arthropods, and the origin of chelicerates, is presented based on a cladistic analysis of 34 taxa and 54 characters. The present study provides a detailed discussion of primary hypotheses of homology and includes a more complete range of terminal taxa than previous analyses. The analysis provides the first convincing synapomorphies for the Arachnomorpha, and suggests that the marrellomorphs are not arachnomorphs. The assignment of Cambrian ‘great appendage’ (or megacheiran) arthropods to the Arachnomorpha is confirmed, and potential synapomorphies uniting them with chelicerates are discussed and tested. Principal amongst these are the loss of the first cephalic appendages (the antennae), loss of the exopods of the second cephalic appendages and modification of the endopods of these appendages into spinose grasping organs. The Arachnomorpha consists of two major clades: (1) a ‘chelicerate-allied’ clade, including chelicerates, megacheirans, Emeraldella, Sidneyia, cheloniellids and aglaspidids, in which chelicerates and a paraphyletic group of megacherian arthropods form the sister group to the remaining taxa; and; (2) a ‘trilobite-allied’ clade, including trilobites, xandarellids, helmetiids, tegopeltids and naraoiids, the relationships of which are more fully resolved than in previous studies.

Specimens of Kerygmachela kierkegaardi Budd are described, from the Lower Cambrian Sirius Passet fauna of N Greenland. The cephalic region is characterised by a pair of stout unsegmented appendages each bearing long spinose processes, and an anterior mouth. The trunk shows alternating rows of tubercles and transverse annulations along the axis, to which are attached 11 pairs of gill-bearing lateral lobes and lobopodous limbs. The caudal region is small, and bears two long tail spines. There is some evidence for circular musculature arranged around the trunk and a dorsal, longitudinal sinus, and several details of the muscular pharynx have been preserved.

The combination of characters found in Kerygmachela allows it to be allied with the lobopods, represented in the extant fauna by the onychophorans, tardigrades, and possibly the pentastomids, and in the Cambrian fossil record by a morphologically diverse set of taxa, some of which are not assignable to the extant groupings. It also shares important characters with the previously problematic Burgess Shale forms Opabinia regalis Walcott and AnomalocarisWhiteaves, and the Sirius Passet form Pambdelurion Budd. These taxa together form a paraphyletic group at the base of the clade of biramous arthropods. The position of the so-called ‘Uniramia’ remains unclear. It can be demonstrated from the reconstruction of the arthropod stem-group that full arthropod segmentation has a different derivation from that of the annelids. In line with other recent analyses, this suggests that the ‘Articulata’ of Cuvier should be dismantled, and the arthropods considered to be a group of protostomes which are phylogenetically distinct from the classic spiralians. Arthropod affinities may rather lie with the other moulting animals, in the so-called ‘Ecdysozoa’.

The prosomal morphology of Baltoeurypterus tetragonophthalmus (Fischer) from the Baltic Silurian is redescribed and reconstructed. The first eurypterid labrum and new secondary sexual characters of Baltoeurypterus are described. The radially-arranged coxae of Baltoeurypterus were capable of adduction and abduction for food mastication, but not promotor-remotor movements for locomotion. Joint diagrams are presented for the first time for an extinct arthropod. Promotion and remotion of the limbs occurred about subvertical trochanteral pivots, as in all other chelicerates except xiphosurans. Baltoeurypterus probably walked in a “slow” gait; a method of choosing possible gaits for extinct arthropods is outlined. Swimming in Baltoeurypterus was effected by means of a rowing action of the posterior limb pair, which is provided with complex joints for collapsing the paddle during the recovery stroke. The limb arrangement and joint mechanisms of Baltoeurypterus are intermediate between those of the xiphosurans and the arachnids. It is possible that a sister relationship exists between the eurypterids and some arachnid groups, which would render Merostomata and Arachnida unnatural assemblages.

Melting experiments with and without added H2O on a model metagreywacke and a natural metapelite demonstrate how pressure and H2O content control the compositions of melts and residual assemblages. Several effects are observed under isothermal conditions. Firstly, the stability field of biotite shrinks with decreasing pressure and with increasing H2O content, whereas that of plagioclase shrinks with increasing pressure and H2O content. Secondly, the ferromagnesian content of melts at the source (i.e. coexisting with their residual assemblages) decreases with decreasing H2O activity. Thirdly, with increasing pressure the Ca/Mg and Ca/Fe ratios of melts decrease relative to those of coexisting garnet. As a consequence, a wide spectrum of melts and crystalline residues can be generated from the same source material. For example, H2O-starved dehydration melting of metagreywacke at low pressure (≤10 kbar) generates K-rich (granitic) melts that coexist with pyroxene- and plagioclase-rich residues, whereas melting of the same material at high pressure (≍15 kbar) and with minor H2O infiltration can generate leucocratic Na-rich and Ca-poor (trondhjemitic) melts that coexist with biotite- and garnet-rich residues. An increased H2O content stabilises orthopyroxene at the expense of garnet + biotite + plagioclase, causing melts to shift towards granodioritic or perhaps tonalitic compositions.

Recent work has directed much attention to the subject of feeding mechanisms and digestive enzymes in the Invertebrates.

The groups worked on previously have been chiefly the Mollusca and the Crustacea, and it was felt that a study of the Polychætes in this connection would be of considerable interest in itself, as well as for comparative purposes. An examination of the literature showed that the amount of detailed work on the Polychætes from the physiological point of view was extremely small, and, in the case of the digestive processes, out of date. A study of the feeding mechanisms and physiology of digestion in Polychaetes has therefore been begun, choosing a filter-feeding form as a starting point, so that a direct comparison can be made with such Molluscs as Mya arenaria and Ostrea edulis, which feed on similar material.

A review of granite emplacement mechanisms in transcurrent, extensional and contractional (thrust sense) shear zones reveals that in all three tectonic settings the plutons have been constructed by multiple granite sheeting parallel to the shear zone walls and deformation fabrics. The sheets and plutons are non-Andersonian in type and were emplaced obliquely to the principal stress directions. Their shape and orientation is more likely to reflect the exploitation of faults and shear zones which were active during emplacement. Sheeting (dyking) is therefore also likely to be the mechanism of ascent along fault zones in the crust.

The available data from Newfoundland, the British Isles and Scandinavia suggest that by late Ordovician–early Silurian times the ocean separating Laurentia from Eastern Avalonia and Baltica had partly closed with the consumption of intervening oceanic crust. Marine seaways, however, persisted until the middle or late Silurian. Phases of crustal transtension and transpression, predominantly under a major sinistral shear couple, occurred throughout the Silurian and early Devonian until the remnant Iapetus Ocean was completely destroyed. The most appropriate Recent plate tectonic models for Silurian sedimentation between Eastern Avalonia and Laurentia are probably the deep-marine foreland basins between Timor and the northern Australian margin, or between Taiwan and mainland China.

The new standard conodont zonation includes, in succession from below: Lower Ps. bicornis Zone, Upper Ps. bicornis Zone, Lower P. procerus Zone, Upper P. procerus Zone, Lower K. ranuliformis Zone, Upper K. ranuliformis Zone, 0. s. rhenana Zone, Lower K. walliseri Zone, Middle K. walliseri Zone, K. patula Zone, uppermost K. walliseri range, post K. walliseri interregnum, K. o. ortus Zone and 0. s. sagitta Zone. Lower boundaries for each zone are defined or redefined. A less detailed biostratigraphic nomenclature at the superzone level is suggested for use where collections are inadequate: The Pterospathodus Zonal group, the Upper Pterospathodus Zonal group, the P. amorphognathoides Zonal group, the Ps. bicornis Superzone, the P. procerus Superzone, the K. ranuliformis Superzone, the O. s. rhenana Superzone, the K. walliseri Zonal group, the Upper K. walliseri Superzone and the K. o. ortus Superzone. These partly overlap and can be used according to the taxa present. The proposed zonation is applied to most known conodont sequences. The taxonomic concept of the taxa used is discussed; new taxa include Nudibelodina sensitiva, Ozarkodina paraconfluens and O. martinssoni. The species name Ozarkodina ortus is a senior synonym of Kockelella absidata.

A new temnospondyl amphibian Balanerpeton woodi gen. et sp. nov. is represented by over 30 complete or partial skeletons from the Viséan limestones, shales and tuffs in East Kirkton Quarry, Bathgate, near Edinburgh, Scotland. It is the commonest tetrapod represented in the East Kirkton assemblage and grew to about half a metre in length. Although superficially like the later Dendrerpeton, it is more advanced in possessing small premaxillaries each bearing a pronounced alary process, large external nares, large rounded interpterygoid vacuities, broadly bordered by the vomers anteriorly, a narrow vomer-pterygoid suture and a rod-like stapes. It is characterised by an unusual dental configuration in which each dentary bears a smaller number of larger teeth than the corresponding upper jaw ramus. A second probable temnospondyl is represented by two straight ribs of a much larger form.

The relationships of basal temnospondyls and other amphibian groups are discussed and it is proposed that the sister-group of the temnospondyls is the Microsauria and that neither colosteids nor Caerorhachis can be considered to be temnospondyls, as both fall outside the temnospondyl-microsaur clade. A preliminary study of character distribution across a selection of primitive temnospondyls, including Balanerpeton, suggests that it is more advanced than the long-snouted Edopoidea and the Dendrerpetontidae despite its Viséan age. This implies that by the Viséan, significant diversification of temnospondyls had taken place.
