Prospects for wide field multi-object spectroscopicinstrumentation
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 15 February 2011
Abstract
I discuss wide-field high resolution spectroscopic instruments in the context of Gaia andGalactic archaeology. Galactic archaeology aims to discover signatures or fossils from theepoch of Galaxy formation, to give observational insights into the processes which tookplace as the Galaxy was assembled. Chemical tagging based on large high resolutionspectroscopic surveys will soon become a significant part of Galactic archaeology. Much ofthe discussion is focussed on prospects for the new HERMES instrument on the AAT.
