Resumen -

Se llevó a cabo una encuesta postal para determinar las directrices clínicas y legales que rigen el uso de la terapia electroconvulsiva (TEC) en los países de toda Europa. Respondientes de 23 de los 33 países devolvieron los cuestionarios cumplimentados. Se encontró una variación considerable en la disponibilidad de la TEC, su frecuencia de uso y los procedimientos legales asociados. Sin embargo, hubo un amplio consenso con respecto a las indicaciones clínicas. El acceso al tratamiento estaba limitado con mucha frecuencia por restricciones económicas o de otros recursos, y restricciones políticas o legales.
