Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) represent a heterogeneous group of psychotherapies in continuous development that share a directive, structured, collaborative approach. Due to a high degree of treatment-resistant cases of major depressive disorder (MDD), new augmentation therapies are urgently needed, in order to increase the chance of recovery in these patients.

To analyze data that may support the indication of third wave CBT in patients with MDD.

A literature search was performed in the main electronic databases, and papers published between January 2000 and August 2020 were included.

Acceptance and commitment therapy has been associated with positive results, but data are derived from low quality trials (n=2). Dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT)-based skill group have been also associated with favorable outcome, in MDD patients (n=2). Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) was also proven effective in the treatment in MDD (n=4), treatment-resistant MDD included, but the difference between MBCT and active comparators was not always significant. Metacognitive therapy (MCT) has been evaluated in good quality clinical trials (n=4), and its efficacy was confirmed. Mild and moderate MDD patients may benefit from compassion-focused therapy (CFT) (n=1). Behavioral activation (BA) is dedicated to MDD patients and according to a meta-analysis (n=26 randomized controlled trials) BA is superior to other active comparators, although the quality of clinical trials was modest.

Third generation CBT could be useful in MDD patients as augmentative strategy, but more good-quality data are necessary before recommending them in an evidence-based treatment guideline as a distinctive intervention from classical CBT.

There is no doubt that the symptoms of depression is the loss of appetite and loss the ability to taste food. However there is unanswered question how depression disorder impact different preferences of food tastes, which was sought to be explored in this study.

were to evaluate changes in characteristics of food tastes in patients with depressive disorder and healthy controls; and to find the association with clinical expression of depressive severity.

74 patients with depressive disorder (according DSM-V, MINI 6.0.0) and 38 healthy controls, 18 to 55 age old, were included into this study. The subjects were interviewed using the sociodemographic and the food sensory questionnaires. The severity of depression was rated using Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS).

There were significantly more patients with depressive disorder in comparison to healthy controls preferred non-spicy taste of food (66.2 % vs. 47.4 % respectively, p=0.025) and non-sour taste of food (66.2% vs 50.0 %, respectively, p=0.015), without significant differences in preference of salty and sweet food tastes. Among study patients with depressive disorder, the majority (71.6%) suffered from moderate severe depression, 23 % - severe depression and 5.4 % had mild severity depression. The preferences of tastes of the food (sour, sweet, salty, spicy) were independent of the severity of the depressive disorder (p>0.05)

Patients with depressive disorder prefer non-spicy and non-sour food tastes, without differences in salty and sweet foods; it have found independent of the severity of the depressive disorder.

Antidepressants in older people have experienced their increase in medical prescriptions in recent decades whit comorbidity with other pathologies and drug polytherapies. With the use of antidepressants, can be observed side and unwanted effects (e.g. emotional blunting). Vortioxetine is a new antidepressant agent which promises fewer side effects.

To evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, side effects (e.g emotional blunting) and cognitive profile

45 elderly patients affected by MDD (DSM-5) were recruited in our observational study. All patients were treated with vortioxetine for 12 months. Physiological and pathological parameters were collected at baseline (T0), after 3 months (T1), 6 months (T2); 12 months (T3). All patients were administered the following scales: GDS; MMSE; QLi; ODQ. The statistical data were processed with EZAnalyze.

33.33% of patients had a score in the “unlikely depression” GDS group. The ANOVA ODQ “Total” results indicate that at least two of the repeated measures differ significantly. Data of the “antidepressant as cause” dimension are interesting [T0 vs T3 (P-Unadjusted .000; P-Bonferroni .000; T-value 5.687. MMSE scores are indicative of one small but not significant difference. Mean QLIndex scores did not show statistically significant changes, but are indicative of positive changes from the baseline score

Vortioxetine resulted in partial reduction of depression. There was a moderate non-statistically significant increase in body weight, glycidic and lipid profiles. Overall data highlight the importance and role that vortioxetine can have in the management of depressive symptoms in elderly subjects. The handling, effectiveness and reduced side effects of the molecule are emphasized.

Associations between childhood trauma (CT), social support (SS), brain functions and major depressive disorder (MDD) is unknown.

This study aimed to investigate whether brain functions mediated associations between CT, SS, and MDD.

164 MDD and 98 healthy controls (HC) were recruited and measured by HAMD-24 and HAMA. Some completed CT questionnaire (CTQ) and social support rating scale (SSRS). We examined amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) between the two groups and correlations between HAMD-24, HAMA and ALFF in MDD. Then, the peak voxels of the ALFF changed regions were used as seeds to analyze whole-brain functional connectivity (FC). Next, correlations between FC and clinical variables of MDD were performed. Last, mediation analysis was used to further determine whether ALFF or FC could mediate the associations between CT, SS, and different clinical variables in MDD patients.

Compared to HC, MDD showed decreased ALFF in right posterior cingulate (PCC_R), left postcentral gyrus, right precentral gyrus, and left thalamus (THA_L), but increased ALFF in right medial frontal gyrus, left subgenual anterior cingulate, and left middle occipital gyrus as well as decreased FC in bilateral PCC and THA_R. HAMD-24 had negative correlation with ALFF of THA_L, while positive with sexual abuse (SA) score in MDD. Mediation analysis revealed that FC of PCC_R mediated association between SA and baseline HAMD-24, and itself or together with SS mediated association between CT and onset age of MDD.

CT may influence the depression severity and onset age of MDD by moderating FC of PCC_R only or together with SS.

Greater affective inertia during the day (higher carry-over effects of prior affect to the current moment) is associated with depression and its development. However, the role of overnight affective inertia (from evening to morning) in depression, and the role of sleep therein, has been scarcely studied.

We examined i) the difference in overnight inertia for positive (PA) and negative affect (NA) between individuals with past depression, current depression, and no depression; ii) how sleep duration and quality influence overnight affective inertia in these groups, and iii) whether overnight affective inertia predicts depression development.

We used data of 579 women from the East-Flanders Prospective Twin Survey. First, individuals with past (n=82), current (n=26), and no depression (n=471) at baseline were examined, and then individuals who did (n=58) and did not (n=319) develop depression at 12-months follow-up. Affect was assessed 10 times a day for 5 days. Sleep was assessed with sleep diaries. Affective inertia was operationalized as the influence of affectt-1 on affectt. Linear mixed-effect models were used to test the hypotheses.

Overnight affective inertia was not associated with depression, neither was it differently associated with sleep characteristics in the depression groups. However, sleep characteristics were more negatively associated with morning NA in both depression groups compared to the non-depressed group. Overnight affective inertia did not predict the development of depression at follow-up.

Depression and sleep characteristics might be more related to mean affect levels rather than to more complex emotion dynamics measures. Replication of these findings with longer time-series is needed.

Cognitive impairment is frequently observed in patients suffering from depression. Cognitive dysfunction play a critical role in increasing the individual’s vulnerability for the first onset, maintenance and future recurrence of depressive episodes.

The objectiv was to assess the cognitive impairment in patient with depressive episode.

A cross sectional, hospital based study was conducted among 100 patients with depressive episodes diagnosed by International Classification of Diseases - 10 visiting outpatient and inpatient in Department of Psychiatry of Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal. The subjects were interviewed with Beck’s depression inventory, Perceived deficient questionnaire, Frontal assessment battery, Trail making test A and B and Forward and Backward Digit Span test. For the assessment of correlates, regression analyses were done using SPSS v 20.0.

The mean age of the participants was 32.47 years (SD±12.25), majority were female, married, Hindu and from urban population. Higher number of respondent were student. Most of them were educated till intermediate level and belonged to middle socioeconomic class family. Different domain of cognitive function according to severity of depression was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). This study also found that age, sex, education, medication use and Becks depression inventory score predicted the cognitive function.

Cognitive impairment is not ucommon among patient with depressive episodes. The impairment is not only seen in severe cases but also in mild to moderate cases. The assessment of cognitive deficits should be the regular part of the assessment in depressive patients.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments for Depressive Disorder. Although its safety and tolerability have been throughout the years, it still holds common mild and rarely persistent side effects.

The aim is to review some of the most recent data on the connection between inaugural seizures in psychiatric patients being submitted to ECT for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, while also discussing the possible contribution of the concomitant use of clozapine and clomipramine.

The authors present a case report of an episode of an inaugural seizure in a patient submitted to ECT, with concomitant use of clozapine and clomipramine. A search on Pubmed and Clinicalkey was performed, from which the relevant publications were selected and reviewed.

The authors present a 62 year old woman who developed an inaugural generalized tonic-clonic seizure after being submitted to ECT for treatment of Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder (RMDD), while also carrying out clozapine and clomipramine dosage reduction, with the purpose of discontinuation. The patient had no history of previous seizures, nor were there relevant findings in the patient’s neurological examination, blood work, brain CT or EEG.

There is a plethora of possible factors involved in the development of an inaugural seizure. Although, the risk of spontaneous seizure during ECT is low, it may be increased by the concomitant use of drugs which can lower the seizure threshold. In most cases, when ECT was resumed after removal of such triggers, there were no further complications.

The tryptophan pathway along with its two branches of metabolism to serotonin and kynurenine seems to be affected in major depression. In depressed patients, peripheral levels of tryptophan, serotonin, kynurenine and their metabolite remain unclear.

Therefore, peripheral tryptophan and metabolites of serotonin and kynurenine were investigated extensively in 173 patients suffering from a current major depressive episode (MDE) and compared to 214 healthy controls (HC).

Fasting plasma levels of 11 peripheral metabolites were quantified: tryptophan, serotonin pathway (serotonin, its precursor 5-hydroxy-tryptophan and its metabolite the 5-hydroxy-indole acetic acid), and kynurenine pathway (kynurenine and six of its metabolites including anthranilic acid, kynurenic acid, nicotinamide, picolinic acid, xanthurenic acid and 3-hydroxy-anthranilic acid).

60 (34.7%) patients were antidepressant drug free. Tryptophan levels did not differ between MDE patients and HC. Serotonin and its precursor (5-hydroxy-tryptophan) levels were lower in MDE patients than HC. Whereas, its metabolite (5-hydroxy-indole acetic acid) levels were within the standard range. Kynurenine and four of its metabolites (kynurenic acid, nicotinamide, picolinic acid and xanthurenic acid) were lower in MDE patients.

This study uses the largest ever sample of MDE patients, with an extensive assessment of peripheral tryptophan metabolism in plasma. These findings provide new insights into the peripheral signature of MDE. The reasons for these changes should be further investigated. These results might suggest a better stratification of patients and different therapeutic strategies therapeutic strategies.

The concept of depression has long been a matter of controversy. Sociocultural factors greatly influence the phenomenology of depression and the meaning that patients assign to their symptoms.

The aim is to determine the changes in the phenomenology of depression over the past decades.

To compare the proportions of biologically mediated symptoms of typical recurrent melancholic depression with the ideator components of the depressive syndrome and a depressive decrease in reactivity. We compared the archival data of one of the authors (V.N.K.) obtained in the study of depression: 1980-1987 (first group) and 2014-2020 (second group). The groups are age-comparable (21-64 y.o.). The Hamilton Depression Scale has been used to assess depression (score of 21–32, in both groups).

Basic, i.e., biologically mediated symptoms, were not statistically different in the study groups. Whereas symptoms associated with emotional reactivity, the patient’s introspective abilities and capacity to identify and verbalize feelings - in the second group, were statistically rare, except for anhedonia, which, on the contrary, came to the fore. Based on some longitudinal studies of the dangers of excessive reliance on computer-mediated communication, one could foresee such contrasting phenomenology changes, which were especially clearly manifested in young patients.

Over the past decades, there are changes in the phenomenology of depression. The same underlying disorder can produce different clinical presentations, and agreement on a pathological entity does not necessarily mean deal with a descriptive label.

Religious people suffer less from depression disorder than less or non-religious people. According to a longitudinal study investigating religiousness and negative life events, religious participants demonstrated fewer depressive symptoms than non-religious. Furthermore, depressed patients with higher religiosity scores show lower values of depression symptoms.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between religiosity and patients with depression symptoms in the Neuro-Psychiatric Center in Riem (NPZR). The correlation between religiousness and life satisfaction as well as anxiety level was analyzed. Additionally, possible gender differences are also assesed.

The patients of the NPZR were selected as sample of the study (N =106, F=61, M=45). The participants were provided with three surveys including the life satisfaction questionnaire, state trait anxiety inventory and the Centrality Scale. A Pearson Correlation was conducted to investigate the association between life satisfaction, level of anxiety and religiousness. T-Test was carried out to find out the differences between female and male patients.

There was a positive relationship between religiousness and life satisfaction of the depressed patients (r = .608, p= .001). There was also a significant relationship between religiosity and anxiety level (r = - .548, p < .001). However there was no significant difference between male and female patients with regard to their religiousness (t= .149, p= .882).

The findings indicate that while there is a significant relationship between life satisfaction, level of anxiety and religiousness of the patients, the gender of the patients has no impact on the religiosity of participants.

Dysthymia is defined in ICD-10 as a chronic depression of mood which does not currently fulfil the criteria for recurrent depressive disorder, mild or moderate severity, in terms of either severity or duration of individual episodes. Although it only entered the psychiatric classifications in DSM-III and ICD-10, this syndrome has been a subject of several changes in conceptualization and classification.

We aim to perform an historical review on dysthymia and related concepts.

We performed an updated review in the PubMed database using the terms “dysthymia”, “dysthymic disorder”, “persistent depressive disorder”, “neurotic depression” and “depressive personality”. The included articles were selected by title and abstract. We also consulted reference textbooks.

Depressive symptoms have been recognized since Antiquity, however, depressive disorders with a chronic course were only conceptualized in the 1970s. Dysthymia represents the confluence of older concepts, including neurotic depression and depressive personality and entered the psychiatric classifications in DSM-III and ICD-10. Presently, this syndrome is classified as persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) in DSM-5 and named dysthymic disorder in ICD-11.

The concepts regarding mental illness and psychiatric diagnoses are constantly evolving. Having knowledge about historical concepts is essential for a clear communication among psychiatrists, adding to the differential diagnosis process and improving patient care.

Multiple neuroendocrine disorders can present themselves through diverse psychiatric symptoms. In the case of hypothyroidism it can manifest itself through mood disorders that will require a comprehensive differential diagnosis.

We present a case report and a review of the relevant literature about the relation between mood disorders and hypothyroidism.

We present the case of a 56-year-old man with no prior psychiatric record who concurring with a grieving process, developed a depressed mood, fatigue, decreased daily activity, and home isolation for months of evolution. He was diagnosed of hypothyroidism and treated with levotiroxine. It was necessary to boost hormonal treatment with antidepressant drugs due to the persistence of the symptoms after the resolution of the hormonal deficit.

The relationship of depression in patients with overt hypothyroidism is widely recognized. Common alterations to both disorders that could make their diagnosis difficult have been observed: existence of psychomotor slowing, attentional and executive disturbance, anxiety, asthenia, weight gain, depressed mood or bradypsychia among others. In the case of subclinical hypothyroidism, certain neuropsychiatric disorders have been linked without having conclusive evidence.

An early screening of thyroid function at the onset of psychiatric symptoms in individuals without prior psychiatric record is essential in the provision of adequate treatment. Clinical improvement has been seen with hormone replacement therapy alone. However, in up to 10% of patients it becomes insufficient, being necessary to complete it with antidepressant drugs for the complete resolution of the condition.

The incidence of depression is associated with decreased social, occupational, and educational performance.

The aim of this study was assessing the prevalence of depression and its related effective factors among students at health faculty at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2019.

In this cross-sectional study 177 students were included randomly. The Beak test included 21 questions were applied to collect data. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 22) and were presented as descriptive statistics and analyses included One-way analysis of variance, t-test and correlation Pearson.

The mean and standard deviation of the age of students was 22.15±3.88 years. More than 80% of students experienced some levels of depression. Of the participants 19.8% indicated no sign of distress, 26% mild distress, 37.3% average distress and 16.9% high depression. There was no statistical association of distress between female and male students (P=0.198). However, significant associations were Sedative drugs, parents level and occupation, Study Field, Future Career and Financial situation with depression (P<0.05).

Overall, the prevalence of depression was higher among students compared with general population. Providing programs for improving student’s mental health is suggested.

Globally, depression affects millions of individuals. A third of depression patients meet the criteria for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, ketamine, improved depressive symptoms in a span of 24-hours. Recently, the FDA approved esketamine, an enantiomer of ketamine for TRD.

To determine the effectiveness of ketamine and esketamine in TRD, and observe their role in suicidality.

Individual systematic searches were conducted on the PubMed database following the PRISMA protocol (Figure 1). Inclusion criteria included randomized clinical trials (RCT). Search strings were (i) “ketamine” OR “esketamine” AND “treatment-resistant depression” (ii) “ketamine” OR “esketamine” AND “suicide.” Eleven studies were included for depression and five studies for suicidality (Table 1). Comparison analysis for suicide appeared trivial because of only one inclusion eligible esketamine RCT. This review was submitted for registration at PROSPERO. Randomized odds ratios, 95% confidence interval (CI), and heterogeneity were obtained.

The comprehensive meta-analysis, version 3.0, was used for analysis. Ketamine improved TRD symptoms and reduced suicidality by a nine-fold and three-fold odds, respectively (OR 9.01, CI 4.89–16.6, p<0.001 and OR 2.9, CI 1.67–5.06, p<0.001). Esketamine also improved TRS symptoms (OR= 2.61, 95% CI= 1.56–4.37, p<0.001). The heterogeneity ranged from 11% to 60% between the three groups. Sensitivity analysis did not alter the results.

Findings must be cautiously interpreted as the primary endpoint differed. The primary endpoint was set at 24-hours and 28-days for ketamine and esketamine, respectively. Esketamine’s effectiveness over 28 days appears promising for TRD. Current aim should consist of structured guidance for clinicians in esketamine administration.

As significance of medically unexplained symptoms increases in general practice it is important to discuss psychopathological comorbidity regarding the impact of health anxiety indicating sufferers excessive care use.

To study the impact of health anxiety in depression with somatic symptoms.

50 patients with depression with somatic symptoms compared to 79 patients with psychodermatological disorders with complaints of pathological skin sensations completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI). The Mann-Whitney U-Test was applied. The psychosemantic method “Classification of sensations” was used to differentiate patients’ bodily experience. Factor analysis was performed.

Scores on HADS-anxiety and SHAI were significantly higher in depression (U=645, p=0.009; U=89.5; p=0.036), although there were no significant differences on HADS-depression. Factor analysis showed a polarization of bodily experience categories in depression as the first factor (38% of total variance) included negative emotions with somatic sensations of exhaustion and the second factor (10% of total variance) included pleasant sensations and positive emotions with the negative sign of factor loadings. In psychodermatological disorders the first factor (31% of total variance) was quite similar, however the second factor (12% of total variance) included skin and general somatic sensations illustrating the higher concern with somatic symptoms.

Higher health anxiety in depression with somatic symptoms compared to psychodermatological disorders (more concerned with bodily experience) could be associated with patients’ complaints of emotional state indicating differences in psychological mechanisms. The urgency of the problem of depression is due to their high prevalence and severity of consequences. At present, the pathogenetic role of heredity in the course of depressive disorders remains unclear. Therefore, studies related to this problem are designed to identify the relationship between hereditary factors and the characteristics of the clinic of depression.

The aim was to study the features of the influence of hereditary factors on the clinic of depressive disorders.

Based on the study of clinical, psychometric (Hamilton scale (HDRS)), genealogical data of 87 patients with depression, a high level of family burden of depression at all levels of kinship in the pedigree of patients (73.56%), alcohol abuse (39.08%), the presence of hypertension (54.02%), heart disease (42.53%) and endocrine pathology (14.94%) were identified. Moreover, in the pedigree of the examined most often this pathology was found in relatives of I and II degree of kinship. When comparing the factors of heredity with the clinical structure and features of depression revealed the proportion of correlations of such factors as: observation by a psychiatrist of I and II degree of relatedness (p ≤ 0.01), depressive disorders mainly by II degree of relatedness (p ≤ 0.05), suicidal behavior according to I and II degree of kinship (p ≤ 0.005), alcohol dependence mainly on I degree of kinship (p ≤ 0.03). Selected leading symptom complexes: depressive, asthenic, apathetic, anxiety-phobic, somato-vegetative, hypochondriac.

The data obtained should be taken into account in diagnostic and preventive measures.

An important aspect of depression relapse prevention programs is identifying personalized warning signals (PWS). These PWS are typically defined as depressive symptoms. Yet, no study has investigated to what extend PWS fit within the diagnostic classification framework, and how this compares to a more transdiagnostic, integrative approach towards depression.

To examine how well PWS reflect depressive symptoms, describe the remaining PWS, and examine how well PWS can be assigned to domains of an existing transdiagnostic and integrative framework, the positive health concept.

162 PWS of 66 individuals with a history of depression were labeled as one or more symptoms of depression or to a residual category. The same process was repeated for labeling the domains of the positive health model. Labeling was done by three independent reviewers (inter-rater percent agreement: symptoms: 0.83 & positive health domains: 0.73). Disagreements were resolved by discussion.

The three most commonly reported depressive symptoms were insomnia/hypersomnia, anhedonia and fatigue/loss of energy. However, sixty-five percent of the PWS were not depressive symptoms, but other symptoms (e.g. irritability, rumination) or aspects of functioning (e.g. withdrawing, managing time). The positive health domains captured all the PWS. However, 44% of PWS were labeled as multiple positive health domains, whereas labeling as symptoms of depression resulted in almost no such overlap.

A more transdiagnostic and integrative approach seems necessary to capture PWS. Depending on one’s purpose, one may consider expanding the definition with other symptoms and aspects of functioning, or using the positive health concept.

Emerging evidence in depressive phenotypes suggests that the breakdown of the blood brain barrier (BBB) andhigh levels of inflammatory cytokines in states of persistent stress or traumatic experiences may contribute to its pathophysiology. Ultra-high field MRI may aid in the radiological detection of maladaptations of the glymphatic system related to BBB integrity that may not be visualized at lower field strengths.

We aimed to investigate the link between glymphatic neuroanatomy in the form of perivascular spaces (PVS) and trauma experience in patients with major depressive disorder.

We examined PVS’s in patients with major depressive disorder and in healthy controls using 7-Tesla MRI and a semi-automated segmentation algorithm.

After controlling for age and gender, we found that the number of traumatic life events experienced was positively correlated with total PVS volume in MDD patients (r= 0.50, p= 0.028) and the overall population (r= 0.34, p= 0.024). Furthermore, the number of traumatic events eliciting fear, helplessness, or horror was positively correlated with total PVS volume in MDD patients (r= 0.50, p= 0.030) and the overall population (r= 0.32, p= 0.023). As expected, age correlated positively with PVS count (r= 0.37, p= 0.013), PVS total volume (r= 0.53, p< 0.001), and PVS density (r= 0.68, p< 0.001 in all participants.

These results suggest a relationship between glymphatic dysfunction potentially related to BBB integrity and psychological trauma in patients with depression, and suggest that glymphatic impairment may play a role in trauma-related symptomatology.

Depressive disorders (Dd) in childhood have a prevalence about 1-2%. Sometimes depression may be underdiagnosed with the risk of complications: comorbidity, chronicity or development of psychiatric diseases in adulthood. Although children often do not show a clear sad mood, they usually presents irritability as a cardinal symptom. Other common symptoms in children´s depression are lack of attention, difficult of concentration and impulsivity. These symptoms actually could define as well an Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), highly prevalent in school-aged children (5-7%).

-To deep into diagnosis and evolution of depressive disorder in primary school-aged children (7-12 years-old). -To contrast clinical evidence about specific aged-symptoms observed in the boy and follow-up until remission.

Variability of symptoms in children´s depression can be confused with other psychiatric disorders like decreased school performance (ADHD), that may make diagnosis difficult. Sometimes, both disorders coexist, especially when the mood disorder is secondary to academic problems caused by ADHD. Early diagnosis and continued follow-up in specialized units is necessary to avoid progression and complications of Dd.

To reduce the heterogeneity of depressive GWAS samples it seems relevant to evaluate and compare current instruments for depression phenotyping.

The aim is to evaluate the agreement of DSM criteria and HADS scores in depression phenotyping for population studies.

The self-report data was obtained from 5116 clients (females 50,63%; mean age 36,92±9,82 years, Ме=42; Q1=35, Q3=76) of genetic testing company Genotek Ltd.. The respondents completed an on-line questionnaire with items on social status and biometrics. Depression phenotyping was based on DSM-5 criteria (life-time and current for major and bipolar depression) and HADS (current).

Mean HADS scores were: HADS-A – 6,43±2,9, Ме=8; Q1=6, Q3=18; HADS-D – 4,5±2,83, Ме=6; Q1=4, Q3=17. Abnormal anxiety and depression (≥11 for each subscale) were present in 9% (N–456) and 3,4% (N–174) of respondents, respectively; borderline (8-10) – in 23% (N–1172) and 11,9% (N–592), respectively. The life-time report of major depression according to DSM-5 criteria was 17,6% (N–261) and of bipolar disorder – 8,3% (N–139). Moderate correlations were present for borderline HADS anxiety scores and DSM major depression (0.19, p<.01). Similar correlations of HADS anxiety scores were registered for DSM bipolar depression (0.20, p<.01). Moreover, HADS depression scores did not correlate with any DSM depressive phenotype.

Our study shows significant correlations only for DSM depression criteria and HADS anxiety, but not depression scores. It could indicate the different significance of individual scale items in depression phenotyping and the need for their separate further evaluation.
