Faced with recent onset psychotic symptoms in patients over 60 years of age without a psychiatric history, it is important to carry out an adequate differential diagnosis.

The objective is to carry out a review of Charles Bonnet syndrome through the presentation of a case

75-year-old patient who suddenly began to present auditory hallucinations. The patient had no relevant psychiatric history or medical history. She reported that suddenly, two months ago, she had begun to listen to his neighbor through the walls of his home. She heard him talk about her, threatening and insulting her. Later, as a result of these hallucinations, she began to believe that in the bathroom he was spying on her through a camera, forcing her to shower in the dark. Weeks later, she thought that he was also chasing her down the street through a chip that had implanted her. She was distressed and highly anxious. She had started not sleeping out of fear of this neighbor.

In addition to the psychiatric evaluation, an MRI was requested to rule out incipient cognitive deterioration, as well as a hearing examination. It was found that he had severe hearing loss in the left ear. Given these findings, he was diagnosed with Charles Bonnet syndrome.

Charles Bonnet syndrome is normally associated with blindness, however, it is also described in deafness. It occurs with hallucinations of the lost sensory organ. It is a clinical picture that does not respond well to treatments.

Cognitive deficits, behavioral disorders, neuropsychiatric symptoms (BNS) are characteristics in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Morover, elderly patients often take multiple medications for their several chronic health conditions. Shared decision making is essential to deprescribing unnecessary or harmful medications in older adults. For these reasons, it may be useful to develop multiple strategies intervention not pharmacologically based and to raise the living standards of the patients, the healthcare professionals and the relatives directly or indirectly involved.

To show application of the Agorà model in AD to improve the performance levels, to decrease the aggressive behaviours and wandering episodes.

Twelve inpatients (79-95 ys) affected by AD, were included in our observational study, recruited in Social Cooperative “Il filo di Arianna”, We have applied in our patients the Agorà model (from the Gentlecare model).Were administered following scales: in inpatients: NPI; CDR, MMSE; in caregovers: CBI; at baseline (T0), after three (T1), six (T2) twelve months (T3). For statistical evaluation we used the EZAnalyze Version 3.0 software, on Excel.

At T0 all patients showed high levels of behavioral and aggression disorders. After T3 with Agorà Model, there has been a significant reduction of previous levels. In addition, an improvement in CBI data was observed in caregivers.

The application of the Agorà model has triggered better performance levels in AD. Moreover, it determined a decrease of behavioural disorders, promoted higher levels of participation in the everyday care activities, improved family wellbeing and participation to the assistance activities, reduced health care professionals turnover and burnout levels.

Olfactory hallucinations have been described since the 19th century as a particular, often unpleasant smell at the beginning or during the spell. The olfactory cortex are involved in temporal lobe epilepsy.

The aim was analyze the relationship between the olfactory hallucinations and the previus diagnosis of epilepsy.

In this study, we present a clinical case and review the current literature showing the relationship between smell and epilepsy.

A 69-years-old woman, with a medical history of epilepsy, went to the emergency department describing a recent episode of seizure, self-limited in time, after a sensation of an unpleasant smell in bed. A medical history of osteoarthritis, cholecystectomy and essential tremor is described. No unknown drug allergies. The neurological examination shows dysarthric speech, tremor in the right upper limb, isochoric and reactive pupils, preserved sensitivity and strength, and a positive Romber’s sign. The physical examination, blood test and vital signs were normal. The head CT scan showed signs of ischemic leukoencephalopathy, without acute ischemic or hemorrhagic lesions. The patient was medicated with 1000 mg of valproate daily, which was suspended a month ago due to an alteration in liver transaminases. Treatment with diazepam 10 mg daily was prescribed and referred for consultation. The sense of smell changes over time for anormal aging process, affecting abilitiesto detect, identify and discriminate odors.Several neurodegenerative diseases presentcertain alterations that help us determine yourorigin and progression (Vaughan and Jackson, 2014).

Olfactory auras occurs before a seizure of the temporal lobe. Repeated stimuli in limbic regions can produce changes in the piriform cortex, with increased excitability and in epileptic discharges.

CONTEXTUALIZATION: Palliative sedation is a resource used to control symptoms of terminal patients in general. It is considered that it should be discussed by the professionals involved in the process, based on the competence of each one, as well as with family members and patients when possible.

AIM: To understand symbolic meanings attributed by nursing professionals who provide assistance to the terminal patient regarding to the act of the palliative sedation.

Strategies: Clinical-qualitative design, semi-directed interview of open questions in depth. Nine oncologist nurses participated in the study; sample closed by the criterion of theoretical information saturation. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed fully, categorized by qualitative content analysis. The results were discussed by colleagues of the Laboratory of Clinical Qualitative Research at the University of Campinas.

FINDINGS: The treatment of the data led to 6 emerging categories: (1) death maintains its ambivalent values in our culture; (2) serving the death symbolically on a tray; (3) the act of sedation and its “unfortunate coincidences”; (4) palliative sedation: agent of a pious death; (5) late sedation: cause for distress to the professional; (6) the professional’s self-comfort considering certain psychological strength from the patient and family.

Final considerations: palliative sedation takes a general and individual meanings for the professional and even in case of experienced professionals regard to palliative sedation, the death phenomenon conduct them to expresses multiple and peculiar emotional issues, not ever perceveid.

Oncologic patients with schizophrenia have a higher mortality, which could be explained by a delayed diagnosis and a poor quality of the oncologic treatment (1). Some of the potential reasons are related with patient’s psychopathology, stigma, and barriers in access to medical care. An structured support during the oncologic treatment has been proposed to solve the difficulties that patients with schizophrenia can experience when handling with an oncologic process. (2).

To illustrate two approaches for cancer accompaniment in patients with schizophrenia.

We present two case-report and literature research of the topic.

Case A. A 49 y.o. woman diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder. In the last years she had difficulties to manage her selfcare, so her mental health providers linked her to an individualized community nurse, who later played a crucial role in helping the patient during the diagnosis and treatment of a breast cancer. Case B. A 37 y.o. man diagnosed with schizophrenia, who was very integrated in a peer-support organization. After being diagnosed with a Lymphoma, he continued participating in all the group activities (theatre, collaborative radio, painting) until his decease. Sharing the process with other patients not only improved his quality of life but also helped the group to manage the grief.

- Individualized support with a mental health nurse could enhance the communication between the oncologist and mental health providers, improve the symptoms management, and allow psychological support. - Peer-support can prevent social isolation, improve the quality of life and the management of the oncologic treatment.

Fear of death is somehow a normal sensation. Though for those having a cancer, it could increase the burden of the disease and have negative psychological impacts. This death anxiety isn’t easily verbalized by patients, thus it’s important for caregivers to manage it to improve those patients’ quality of life.

Assess death anxiety in cancer patients and to identify factors that may influence it

Our study was a cross-sectional descriptive study with an analytical focus on quantitative specifications. It targeted patients hospitalized at the oncology department or consultant at the day hospital of the regional hospital of Gabes, Tunisia. Participants completed a questionnaire including sociodemographic and clinical data, using HADS scale for anxious and depressive symptoms and DAS scale for death anxiety.

One hundred and twenty patients were enrolled in the study. The average age of participants were 54, 9 ±11, 8 years. The majority of patients were married (68.3%) and had an average socioeconomic level (74, 2%). Our results showed that 43, 3% of patients had a high death anxiety score. Higher level of threat of death, were found in older patients(p=0.028), females (p=0.018) and for those having children (p=0,01). Death anxiety were also higher in patients having anxiety (p=0.007) and those having depression (p=0.033).

The degree of death anxiety among cancer patients seems important. Its assessment and resolution by the caregivers remains paramount. The identification of this death anxiety should optimize the overall care of the patient.

The functional approach to the study of stress resistance allows us to distinguish two blocks of resources – the “active” one, which includes the analysis of the content, conditions, subject and means of labor, and the “personal” one, which considers values, motivation and the expressiveness of personal qualities that contribute to the stress resistance (Granek, Buchman, 2020; Cross, 2019; Powell et al., 2020; Hernández-Marrero, Fradique, 2019).

The objective of our work was to study the relationship between the personal and motivational characteristics of hospice employees with the different symptoms of professional burnout as an indicator of a reduced stress resistance.

62 hospice medical employees with an average work experience of 4,5 years took part in the survey. They were asked to fill out questionnaires to diagnose the burnout symptoms, a motivational personality profile and to assess themselves by the personal semantic differential.

By the means of the procedure for determining the extreme groups (M ± σ), two groups of respondents were identified, which are characterized by different degrees of burnout symptoms. The results of the comparative analysis showed that the less advantaged respondents from the burnout perspective are focused on the life support, comfort, social status, which indicates a certain rationality in the choice of this job.

The portrait of a professionally successful hospice employee includes an orientation towards communication, social and creative activity, which is complemented with independence, confidence and decisiveness – the features that allow carrying out their work in stressful conditions and mainly in uncertain situations.

Studies indicated that breast cancer cause alexithymia that having adverse effect on resilience. Recognizing and expressing emotions are very crucial to cope with the difficulties.

This study aimed to examine the role of alexithymia on psychological resilience and related variables in women with breast cancer.

In this descriptive study, 70 women with breast cancer who apply to a medical oncology outpatient between June 2019-February 2020 were included. 9-questions questionnaire was used to determine the sociodemographic and cancer related characteristics of the participants. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Psychological Resilience Scale (PRS) were used to determine perceived social support, alexithymia and psychological resilience levels. Descriptive statistics, correlations, ANOVA and t-test were used for data analysis.

The MSPSS (20.07 ± 10.54) and TAS-20 were found low (47.71 ± 11.96) and PRS were high (132.24 ± 16.47). A negative, weak, significant relationship was found between the alexithymia (r=-0.370, p=0.02) and perceived social support (r=-0.496, p=0.01) with psychological resilience. There was no significant difference between the psychological resilience and age, education level, marital status, having children, profession, employment status, duration of illness, type of treatment, having metastases, and becoming caregiver (p> 0.05).

The psychological resilience of women with breast cancer was negatively related to their alexithymia and perceived social support levels. It indicates that being able to recognize the emotions and having social support systems would positively affect the recovery process.

Patients with life-limiting oncologic conditions should be approached by multidisciplinary teams that contribute to improve their quality of life, including support from mental health dedicated professionals. It is the role of the psychiatrist to understand the relationship between mental health and general health outcomes, specific of this type of patients. Terminally ill and dying patients benefit from psychiatric support, and it seems to have real effects in terms of patient care and medical staff education.

To identify approaches and mental health professionals’ practices regarding end-of-life issues in terminally ill cancer patients.

Review of the most recent literature regarding end-of-life issues in terminally ill cancer patients. The research was carried out through the Cochrane, UptoDate, PubMed, MedLine, LILACS and SciELO databases, using the terms “oncology”, “psychiatry” and “end of life”, until December 2020.

While symptoms of anxiety and depression are common in palliative care settings, generally related to feelings of helplessness and fear of death, they should not be assumed to be an inevitable part of it. For terminally ill patients, anxiety and trauma-related disorders can manifest in various ways and it is important to establish personalized treatment approaches, based on a supportive clinical team, and, if necessary, psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic or complementary treatments.

It is extremely important to assess terminally ill patients from the mental health point of view. It is required that psychiatrists take part in clinical care and research on the treatment of these patients with severe medical conditions, in order to increase their quality of life.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. The problem of mental health and quality of life of patients is currently particularly relevant. Most patients with breast cancer in the process of adapting to the disease experience certain mental disorders: depressive, anxiety-phobic and psychosomatic disorders.

To study the severity of anxiety-depressive disorders in the clinical picture in patients with breast cancer and evaluate the effectiveness of specialized pharmacotherapy using antidepressants in combination with antitumor therapy.

The study included 30 patients with a first established diagnosis of breast cancer and 52 patients with a follow-up history of 3-17 years. The main method of work was the clinical, psychopathological, and statistical research methods (a method using contingency tables and the Fechner coefficient, a method - Chi-square test).

To assess the severity in the clinical picture of anxiety-depressive tendencies and the effectiveness of treatment, special scales were used: hospital scale of anxiety and depression (HADS); general clinical impression scale (CGI) for assessing disease severity (CGI-S “severity”) and improvement (CGI-I “improvement”). High antidepressant therapy efficacy indicators were obtained in combination with benzodiazepine drugs and hypnotics in a group of patients with anxiety-depressive nosogenia (15 patients, 88% of respondents with reduction in starting anxiety and depression scores HADS more than 50%, CGI 85%), in the group with chronic hypochondriac dysthymia and cyclotymic endoform depression.

The data obtained in the study confirm the effectiveness of psychopharmacotherapy with antidepressants in breast cancer patients with identified disorders of the anxiety-depressive spectrum.

Chronic pain has an impact that goes beyond the physical plane and, over the years, it ends up deteriorating the emotional, working and social life of people who suffer it.

Since we are working with patients who suffer a chronic pathology that cannot be cured, the objective of the group is to create a safe space in which these patients can feel understood, facilitating emotional expression and promoting an active attitude. Accepting pain and its limitations allows the person to regain their ordinary life.

A multicomponent group therapy with a cognitive-behavioural orientation was carried out. The group was formed by 12 patients, all of them women with chronic pain. Eleven sessions were established on a weekly basis of one and a half hours of duration.

In each session a specific aspect was worked on, favouring the learning of techniques, tools and strategies of coping. A global approach was made, including behavioural, cognitive and emotional elements. At the end of the process, the patients reported benefits in their ability to manage anxiety and depression symptomatology, and they reflected a lower impact of pain in their daily life.

Given the complexity of the symptomatology in chronic pain, it is important to approach the treatment from a multidimensional perspective that envisages every component of pain in order to being able to give a response to the physical and psychosocial impact that it implies, favouring a better confrontation and adaptation.

Tension-type headaches is the most common type of headache among adults and it rises a challenge in findig an effective and safe treatment method.

The study aims to evaluate the corporal acupuncture therapy efficacy in patients with chronic tension-type headaches undergoing a complex treatment plan.

The study involved 132 patients (74% female and 26% men) aged 18-65 years, who were divided into two groups. Patients reported their pain lasted 0.4-12 years. All the patients received conventional treatment (central muscle relaxants and antidepressants). The study group additionally received classical corporal acupuncture 3 times per week, a course of 12 sessions. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated by measuring pain intensity using a subjective visual analogue scale (VAS) and McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ).

Most of the patients (79% and 88% of study and control groups respectively) demonstrated moderate cervical musculoskeletal dysfunctions. At admission pain intensity was 4.2±1.5 and 3.8±1.7 VAS points in the control and study groups respectively, MPQ sensory rank pain index (RPI) was 5.92±1.49 points, affective RPI 3.41±0.84, the total RPI – 7.12±2.56 in the control group, and 6.22±1.74; 2.98±0.62 and 7.14±1.65 points in the study group. 4 weeks after treatment measurements showed following pain intensity changes: 4.21±0.74 vs 3.1±0.95 points in the control and study groups respectively. 3- and 6-month period revealed 3.1±0.57, 2.4±0.74 points and 2.1±0.62, 1.1±0.49 points in the control and study groups respectively.

Classical corporal acupuncture course may benefit chronic tension-type headaches patients providing an effective treatment in a safe way.

44-year-old woman. Married and mother of one child. She has an hospitalization for alcohol dependence in the context of depressive syndrome. The patient attends the consultation regularly, presenting in the foreground alcohol consumption with evasive characteristics due to hypothymic mood. Many pharmacological approaches are tried with poor tolerance, as well as referral to an alcohol cessation unit. After that, it requires new income where partial disorientation is observed.

A CT scan is performed and is reported as normal.

In admissions, family-type interventions are performed to reduce accompanying family dysfunction. The evolution is torpid, with the appearance of dysfunctional hysteromorphic personality traits, with childish demands and refusal to go to prescribed consultations. Tendency to confabulation and demonstrative attitudes in the family context, which yield with hospitalization, presenting an absence of disruptive behaviors in the hospital context, but it does seem to present brain alterations due to alcoholism. It is sent home with appropriate indications.

Sometimes, a detailed investigation and follow-up of a case, in this case by way of admission, may result in a different diagnosis than the previous one, which entails a different management.

Personality traits play are related to many forms of psychological distress, such as body dissatisfaction.

To explore the associations between appearance schemas and personality traits.

494 university students (80.2% females; 99.2% single), with a mean age of 20.17 years old (SD=1.77; range:18-20), filled in the Appearance Schemas Inventory-Revised, the NEO-Personality Inventory, and the Composite Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale.

A significant difference was found in Self-evaluation Salience scores by sex [females (M=37.99,SD=7.82); males (M=35.36,SD=6.60);t(489)=-3.052,p=.002]. Having conducted correlations separately, by sex, Self-Evaluation Salience was correlated with Concern Over Mistakes (r=.27), Doubts about Actions (r=.35), and Socially-Prescribed Perfectionism (r=.23). For females, Self-evaluation Salience was correlated with Concern Over Mistakes (r=.34), Personal Standards (r=.25), Doubts about Actions (r=.33), Parental Expectations (r=.24), Parental Criticism (r=.24), Organization (r=.11), Socially-Prescribed Perfectionism (r=.31), Self-Oriented Perfectionism (r=.32), and Neuroticism (r=.33). Concerning Motivational Salience, in the total sample (not separately, by sex), this scale/dimension significantly correlated with Conscientiousness (r=. 18), Personal Standards (r=.23), Socially-Prescribed Perfectionism (r=. 10), and Self-Oriented Perfectionism (r=.29).

Females seem to value more their self-appearance and, in females, the salience of appearance in life seems to be associated with maladaptive-perfectionism, as well as with adaptive-perfectionism. In males, the salience of appearance was only related with adaptive perfectionism. Males seem more concerned with their own standards, while for females other´s standards are also relevant. In females the level of salience of appearance in life seems to relate to the experience of feelings, such as anxiety/depression (neuroticism). The motivation to improve appearance seemed to be particularly related, in both sex, to adaptive perfectionism.

Epidemiological data suggest that in youth the prevalence of co-occurring borderline personality disorder (BPD) is particularly high in people with gambling disorder (GD).

The objective of this study was to investigate clinical presentations of GD in youth patients with BPD.

Clinical psychopathological interview, SCID-II, The Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale (G-SAS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Zung Anxiety Rating Scale (ZARS). Sample: N=65 male and female, age: 18-25 with GD and BPD.

GD clinical presentation in BPD patients in youth have age and individual specific signs, like polymorphism and high conjugacy with comorbid mental disorders (including, but not limited to MDD, OCD, anxiety disorders, body dysmorphic disorder and etc.) Types of GD in BPD varied due to these comorbid syndrome: 1. Subjects with GD, BPD and MDD in youth demonstrated severity progression in anticipatory tension emotional distress (mental pain, shame, guilt) and lower level in pleasure on winning the bet (G-SAS:SD/Mean 35± 3). 2. Group with OCR and Anxiety Disorders showed different profile: urges to gamble and emotional distress dominated here (G-SAS SD/Mean 32.5± 1). 3. Individuals with no clear co-occurring clinical syndromes revealed combination low level control thoughts of gambling with much excitement and pleasure on winning the bet (G-SAS:SD/Mean 41.2± 2).

The activity of military personnel is associated with risk and tension which can affect both physical and mental health. Hardiness reflects certain characteristics of a person that can motivate them to take an active part in overcoming difficult circumstances. Thou we considering Hardiness is a resource for the reliability of professional activity. The study was supported by the RFBR #19-013-00799.

Research of Hardiness as a military personnel professional reliability resource.

The research involved 315 participants, male. Average age 20.12 years (min – 18, max – 32). The participants completed 3 standardized questionnaires: The Occupational Stress Survey (Leonova, 2006), The 16 PF Questionnaire (rus. version, Kapustina (eds.), 2001), Hardiness Survey (rus. ver. by Leontiev, Rasskazova, 2006).

In our study Hardiness value was above-average (M = 101.3; SD = 15.96). Correlation analysis revealed a direct relationship between Hardiness and “Reliability of professional activity” (M = 0; SD = 1) – Chronic stress, Emotional Stability, Motivational Distortion, Apprehensiveness (p = 0.0001; r = 0.678). It also appeared that Hardiness is a predisposition factor of professional reliability activity (adj. R2=0.539). Correlation analysis also revealed an inverse correlation between Hardiness and Chronic stress (p = 0.0001; r = -0.730).

Thus Hardiness is a resource for the reliability of professional activity. These results can be used in practice for performing trainings to support specialists and help them develop resources for reliability of professional activity.

The 48-item EPQR-S is a short version of EPQ-R widely used to assess neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), psychoticism (P) and Lie scale (L) for research purposes. The EPQR-S was chosen for the Arab population because it is a well-established Eysenck theory of personality.

To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic EPQR-S.

The EPQ-R S, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO–FFI-3) were administered to 1842 (538 males, 1304 females) Kuwait University undergraduates with a mean age = 20.42 ± 1.42. The internal consistency reliability, factor structure, and convergent validity of the EPQR-S with EPQ and NEO–FFI-3 were assessed.

Cronbach’s alpha was satisfactory for N (0.76), E (0.72), L (0.70) and low for P. (0.60). The results revealed significant gender differences in P & E with a favor for males and in N & L a favor with females. PCA showed that EPQR-S four factors explains 52.48% of the total variance. Moreover, the high correlations between the EPQR-S and EPQ scales, with coefficients of (0.92) for the N, (0.88) for the E, (0.78) for the L, and (0.76) for the P as the majority of items of the dimensions of the EPQR-S are the same with those of the EPQ. Furthermore, there were high correlations between the same scales of the EPQR-S and NEO–FFI-3, with coefficients of (0.67) for the N scales, and (0.52) for the E scales.

The findings support the psychometric properties N, E, L scales only.

Body modifications are a common practice in altering one’s appearance. Some authors refer to such practices body injuring (tattooing, piercing) and indirect body modification (dieting, bodybuilding).

To study the attitudes of university students to body modifications considering their personal adaptation potential and experience of body injuring when modifying it.

We surveyed 104 university students aged 17–24 (65.3% males). The first group included 52 students who had experienced body altering (tattooing, piercing), the second group – 52 students without such an experience. We used the Maddi Hardiness Scale to assess the personal adaptation potential and a 14-point questionnaire to estimate the attitude to body modification.

Over the half of the students in both groups consider that an insufficiently beautiful body needs “improving” (63.4% и 51.9%), but people do not have to intensively build up their muscles (51.9% и 84.7%). Students with modified bodies look more positively at piercing (z=5.4; p=.0001), weight control (z=5.20; p=.0001) and plastic surgery (z=4.02; p=.0001). Students with unmodified bodies credibly more rarely regard tattoo as decoration (z=3.7; p=.0002) and have a more negative attitude to pediatricians having tattoos (z=2.9; p=.003). Indicators of psychological hardiness in the first group are credibly lower – commitment (р=.01), control (р=.001) and challenge (р=.0001).

Students with a higher adaptation potential limit themselves to indirect body modifications (physical exercises). Students with a lower adaptation potential more often resort to body injuring (tattooing, piercing), which may reflect peculiarities of their personal response to stress or peculiarities of their mental status.

DSM-V includes near-psychotic symptoms as new criteria in borderline personality disorder (BPD). This change makes more difficult the differential diagnosis between considering psychotic symptoms as part of the BPD or as part of a comorbid psychotic disorder.

Recognize the difficulty of the differential diagnosis in clinical practice between BPD and comorbid diagnosis of BPD with psychotic disorders, and how it can affect the patient’s outcome.

32 year-old female patient with previous diagnosis of BPD, psychotic episodes and cannabis abuse, was admitted due to paranoid ideation and aggressiveness, with massive borderline defense mechanisms (frequent displays of anger, high impulsivity, low frustration tolerance, self-destructive behavior…). Psychotic symptoms ceased two weeks after admission, and considering the patient’s individual characteristic it was believed BPD fitted more with this clinical case, although different psychotic disorders were considered. 30 year-old female patient began intensive psychiatric treatment with previous diagnosis of BPD, psychotic disorder and cannabis abuse. It was observed that the paranoid ideation and bodily experiences she suffered lasted months and were characterized by a strong belief. These two reasons were put into consideration when it was decided to judge this clinical case as a comorbid diagnosis of BPD with a psychotic disorder.

It is necessary to assess the difficulty of the differential diagnosis in these patients, and offer them specialized treatment depending on the diagnosis, as it can affect the patient’s outcome.

Term ‘transcendental cinema’ was first used by Paul Schrader in the context of slow cinema, characterized by long shots, austere camerawork and acting devoid of self-consciousness. This style expresses a spiritual state and comes closer to metaphysic dimension. All these features bring transcendental style closer to philosophy of mindfulness characterized by the practice of purposely bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgment, a skill one develops through meditation or other training.

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the connection between transcendental style in cinema and mindfulness. Moreover, we would like to present the cinema as a tool approaching meditation and mindfulness. Particularly, we will use the example of David’s Lynch movie Blue Velvet.

In our research we use the approach proposed by Paul Schrader and David Lynch to analyze the principles of mindfulness and transcendental cinema in Blue Velvet.

There are a number of presenting positive impact of mindfulness and meditation on mental and physical health of patient not only with neurological or psychological problems. Transcendental cinema is a representation of mindfulness as it teaches paying attention to single stimulus and staying in one thought. Particularly, the combination of meditation music, slow sequences as well as contemplation of human mind and emotional reactions displayed in Blue Velvet is perfect example of transcendental cinema.

We think that transcendental cinema should be treated as a technique of mindfulness used to understand psychological state of health and disease.
