There are few weeks in which the news media do not announce some great breakthrough in medical or biological science, usually inferring some immediate benefit to mankind. Alas, the promise of these benefits is nearly always premature and leads to disappointment. However, the frequency of the reports does indeed reflect an astonishing rate of new discovery in a field of great complexity.
