Introduction. Albinism is a serious physiological disorder of strawberries in which fruits appear bloated, develop poor color and flavor, and become susceptible to fruit rot during storage. Many factors have been reported to be associated with albinism, but vigorous vegetative growth of the plants is considered as the primary factor. Mulching is the most important cultural practice in strawberry, which is known to influence plant growth, yield and fruit quality. Our studies aimed at observing the influence of different types of mulch materials on strawberry growth and albinism disorder. Materials and methods. Studies were conducted with five cultivars (Sweet Charlie, Chandler, Douglas, Fern and Etna) cultivated with three types of mulch materials (black polyethylene, white polyethylene and paddy straw). No mulch was used as a control. Observations were recorded on plant growth parameters, albinism incidence and fruit quality parameters of five cultivars under different mulch materials. Results and discussion. All growth parameters were better with mulching than with control. Among the different types of mulch materials, plants had the best growth with black polyethylene, but the fruits were more affected by albinism as compared with those cultivated with paddy straw mulch. Among the cultivars, the plants of Etna showed the most vigorous growth, but their fruits had the highest incidence of albinism (49.88%); those of Sweet Charlie had the lowest incidence (20.74%), primarily because of the close relationship between plant growth and albinism. Conclusion. Black polyethylene mulch favored better plant growth in strawberry, but enhanced the incidence of albinism in a sub-tropical climate as compared with paddy straw. Thus, paddy straw is the best option for use as mulch for strawberry in warmer localities.

Introduction. Pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest, la Guinée a un climat tropical et un relief accidenté, avec un réseau hydrographique important. Elle présente quatre régions naturelles dans lesquelles se développent spontanément plusieurs espèces fruitières dont les fruits sont actuellement consommés et vendus dans les marchés nationaux. Afin de mieux exploiter ces produits, des enquêtes ont cherché à constituer une base de données fiables identifiant les espèces fruitières impliquées, leurs zones et leurs périodes de production, le circuit de commercialisation des produits, leurs techniques de conservation, de transformation et de consommation. Matériel et méthodes. Un suivi des prix des fruits de cueillette commercialisés en Guinée et une analyse approfondie de leur production et de leur utilisation ont été réalisés de mars 1998 à février 2000 sur deux mêmes marchés guinéens. Pour cela, les informations requises (prix, période, conditionnement, circuit de commercialisation) ont été collectées par enquêtes effectuées tous les quinze jours et consignées sur une fiche spécifique. Résultats. L'étude a mis en évidence d'éventuels problèmes d'approvisionnement des marchés, liés à leur site. Parmi les espèces identifiées, douze se sont révélées plus importantes et ont fait l'objet d'analyses. Leurs zones de production ont été définies. La majorité des fruits commercialisés sur les marchés enquêtés mûrissent entre mars et juin ; ils représentent une source de revenus pour une bonne part de la population. Les techniques de conservation, de commercialisation, de transformation et de consommation ont été répertoriées. Conclusion. L'enquête effectuée conduit à encourager la protection des fruitiers de cueillette et à conseiller leur introduction progressive dans les vergers familiaux. Les programmes de recherches nationaux cherchent à intervenir également dans la transformation et la conservation des produits issus de cueillettes, qui posent de grosses difficultés aux producteurs.

Introduction. Loquat shares with other pomes, such as apple (Malus domestica) and pear (Pyrus communis), flowering habits, but, in contrast with them, the tree is considered a self-compatible species. However, when planted in solid blocks under mesh, low fruit set and small fruit size are often reported. To explore in which way restrictions of bee activity and/or impediments for cross-pollination can be responsible for low productivity and poor fruit quality, we carried out controlled pollination on flowers of loquat cv. Algerie. Materials and methods. A first experiment checked cross-pollination response by comparing fruit set and quality from self-, open-, and cross-pollinated flowers. A second experiment explored poor pollination effects by modifying the number of stigmas being hand cross-pollinated. Results. Cv. Algerie loquat flowers cross-pollinated with pollen of cvs. `Tanaka' and `Golden Nugget' loquat flowers produced more fruits of higher quality (larger, heavier and more precocious) than flowers under self-pollination. Benefits of cross-pollination can be explained by an earlier and higher level of fertilization. Observations under microscopy showed, however, that self-incompatibility of cv. Algerie flowers is not complete, and a certain level of self-fertilization occurs. The second experiment demonstrated that limiting the number of stigmas pollinated resulted in a significant reduction in the number of seeds formed that, in turn, affected fruit size and shape. Flowers with only one stigma pollinated seldom formed more than two seeds while flowers with all five stigmas pollinated produced fruit with an average of four seeds. Conclusion. Our results emphasize a dependence of cv. Algerie flower pollination on both adequate activity of pollinator insects and appropriate placement of pollinizers.

Introduction. The chemical fruit thinning of apple trees carried out after flowering is a current practice used to improve fruit size and quality, to ensure the return of flowering and to reduce the biennial bearing. Our work studied the effectiveness of two particular chemical thinners (Accel and carbaryl) applied to three apple tree cultivars, and their effects on the fruit yield and quality. Materials and methods. Two identical experiments were undertaken on mature apple trees in 1995 and 1996. They made it possible to test spraying after flowering of Accel and carbaryl at three different concentrations and applied to the three `Empire', `Jan-A-Red' and `Braeburn' apple tree cultivars. The effect of the chemical substances was evaluated with parameters of fruit set, fruit quality and yield. Results and discussion. For the three apple tree cultivars studied, the spraying of Accel and carbaryl made it possible to reduce the fruit set and to improve the apple yield, pH and soluble solids concentrations. However, the treatments did not affect the fruit seed number, the fruit length and diameter, or the [fruit length / fruit diameter] ratio. Conclusion. With the concentrations used, Accel and carbaryl were effective for thinning the three apple tree cultivars tested. These chemical thinners increased yield and improved certain parameters of the apple quality.

Introduction. V. doniana Sweet fruit juice is sweet and has been fermented for many years in Nigeria using a traditional technology to produce wine. In this country, black plum is collected from wild trees in the natural ecosystem or from trees cultivated in isolated farms. Our study compared the chemical and sensory properties of wine produced from traditional or controlled fermentation of black plum juice. Materials and methods. Four types of experiments, two with spontaneous fermentation and two with controlled fermentation, were carried out, each with five replicates. The proximate composition, alcohol content and pH of the solutions obtained after spontaneous or controlled fermentation were determined. Moulds and yeasts isolated in the fermented juice were identified. Results and discussion. Wine obtained from controlled fermentation had 10.5% alcohol content while the spontaneous fermentation produced a wine of 5.0% alcohol content. The chemical analysis of juice produced from harvested ripe Vitex doniana fruit showed that it contained a soluble protein content of 75.62 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$, pH of 4.5, total sugars of 95.10 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$, titratable acidity of 0.33 ${\rm mg}\cdot 100$ mL-1, and ascorbic acid of 5.2 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$. The yeasts isolated from the wine were Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. coreanus, and filamentous moulds were Rhizopus stolonifer, Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp. Single cell protein was produced from the fruit juice by cultivation in it of Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from the fruit. The yeast had a protein content of 6.8 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$ when grown at 20 °C for 36 h at pH 5.8. Conclusion. Wine produced from Vitex doniana Sweet juice has quite high alcohol content and is palatable with good flavor. The stability of the juice for yeast growth is an advantage for the production of single cell protein.

Introduction. Jusqu'à présent, aucun protocole n'a été développé pour l'embryogenèse somatique de l'olivier Picholine, cultivar exploité dans près de 98 % des plantations d'oliviers au Maroc. Nos travaux ont donc cherché à étudier les effets de la composition du milieu de culture et de la lumière sur l'induction et le développement d'embryons somatiques chez ce cultivar. Matériel et méthodes. Après désinfection des noyaux d'olives Picholine, des cotylédons ont été mis en culture après suppression des embryons zygotiques. Ils ont été disposés en boîtes de Pétri soit entiers, soit en distinguant les parties proximales et distales. Pour la phase d'induction de cals embryogènes, quatre milieux de base [Murashige et Skoog (MS), Bourgin et Nitsch (BN), Schenk et Hildebrandt (SH) et Canas et Benbadis (OMc)], additionnés de régulateurs de croissance (zéatine et ANA), ont été testés soit à l'obscurité, soit en photopériode de 16 h. Après 6 semaines de culture sur ces milieux d'induction, les cals ont été transférés en tubes, dans des milieux de culture frais mais sans ANA et soumis à une photopériode de 16 h. À l'issue de cette phase, les plantules présentant des racines bien développées et au moins deux feuilles ont été repiquées dans des pots contenant un substrat et acclimatées en serre. Résultats. Les meilleurs résultats d'induction et de développement des embryons somatiques ont été obtenus avec le milieu MS et aucune morphogenèse n'a été observée sur le milieu OMc. L'incubation à la lumière a significativement réduit l'induction des cals embryogènes et a inhibé la régénération des plantules. Les parties proximales des cotylédons ont donné de meilleurs résultats que les parties distales. Le taux de régénération de plantules a atteint 40 % des explants mis en culture et le pourcentage de survie obtenu après leur acclimatation a atteint 94 %. Conclusion. Le protocole décrit a démontré la capacité embryogène du cultivar Picholine marocaine. Il pourra être exploité pour la propagation de cet olivier au Maroc.

Introduction. L'insuffisance en froid hivernal dans les zones de plaine au Maroc constitue un facteur limitant de la production du pommier. Nous avons évalué les effets du cyanamide hydrogène (Dormex), seul ou additionné d'huile minérale, et de l'acide gibbérellique sur le débourrement de pommiers, dans les conditions climatiques de plaines au sud du Maroc. Matériel et méthodes. Les expérimentations ont porté sur la variété `Dorsett Golden' connue pour ses faibles besoins en froid. Un dispositif en bloc aléatoire complet avec quatre répétitions a été utilisé. Les produits testés ont été le Dormex appliqué soit seul à (1,5, 2,5 et 4) % du produit formulé, soit à 0,5 % en association avec de l'huile minérale à (2 ou 4) %, et l'acide gibbérellique à 460 mg $\cdot$ L-1. Les arbres témoins ont été traités à l'eau. L'évaluation a porté sur le débourrement, la floraison, la nouaison, la croissance végétative et la production. Résultats. Les substances chimiques ont avancé la date de débourrement et en ont amélioré le taux de même que celui de floraison, et ils ont favorisé la croissance végétative. Le rendement et le calibre des fruits ont également été améliorés de manière significative. Conclusion. Le Dormex, seul ou combiné à de l'huile minérale, et l'acide gibbérellique ont avancé et regroupé le débourrement tout en améliorant le calibre et la production en fruits du pommier `Dorsett Golden'. L'efficacité du mélange [ Dormex + huile minérale]associée à son moindre coût conduisent à recommander ce produit pour pallier le manque en froid hivernal dans les zones de plaine du Maroc caractérisées par un hiver doux.

Introduction. For some species such as P. armeniaca, overcoming dormancy may be problematic when cold requirements are not satisfied. Moreover, the different positions of flower buds on the tree canopy and on the apical and basal portions of twigs can influence their development. Sampling problems have not been extensively studied. Therefore, the effect of different sectors (west and east), of different heights (top and bottom) of the canopy and of twig portions (medium-apical and medium-basal) on the break of dormancy in the apricot tree was evaluated. Attention was also focused on floral anomalies in relation to the flower bud position on the twig, in order to identify the least variable portion of twigs and thus provide useful information for optimization of periodic bud sampling. Materials and methods. Two cultivars of P. armeniaca with different chilling requirements were chosen: `San Castrese' and `Orange Red'. The end of endo-dormancy was evaluated from December to blooming time by traditional biological approaches, such as increase in flower bud fresh weight and evolution of the bud phenological stage, before and after 7 d under forcing conditions. In addition, the percentage of floral anomalies was considered in relation to the flower bud position on the twig. Results and conclusion. The results showed that canopy and twig positions exerted different effects on the breaking of the flower bud endo-dormancy, and some practical applications can be drawn from them for the best sampling design inside the tree structure: the west orientation of the canopy and the medium-apical portion of the twig were the best positions to obtain an earlier active growth of buds, allowing the prediction of endo-dormancy breaking. The analysis of flower anomalies showed considerable differences depending on the position of the bud on the twig. High percentages of anomalous buds were observed in the medium-basal portion of the twig, which could distort the results on the evaluation of overcoming dormancy, due to a weaker growth trend of flower buds.

Introduction. Le babaco (Carica pentagona Heilb.), plante équatoriale de mon- tagne, est originaire d'Équateur. Ses fruits sont particulièrement appréciés pour leur arôme caractéristique. La plante. Le babaco est un arbuste semi-ligneux de la famille des Caricacées. Cet hybride naturel se cultive en Équateur entre (1500 et 2500) m. Les rendements de production sont compris entre (60 et 80) fruits par plante et par an. Le fruit. Le fruit du babaco est une baie asperme jaune à maturité. Son arôme caractéristique se rapproche à la fois de l'ananas, du citron et de la papaye. Quand le fruit est vert, il exsude un latex qui con- tient une activité protéolytique semblable à celle de la papaye. Transformation. Le fruit est consommé essentiellement à l'état frais. La fabrication de pulpe, conserves et de fruits déshy- dratés est également possible. L'extraction et la purification des enzymes protéolytiques du latex des fruits verts pourrait être une nouvelle voie de valorisation industrielle du babaco. Tendances économiques. Grâce à des rendements de production élevés, ce fruit a éveillé un grand intérêt commercial. L'Équateur et la Nouvelle-Zélande sont les deux seuls pays où le babaco est cultivé à grande échelle. Conclusion. Le babaco présente d'intéressantes perspec- tives économiques, grâce notamment à ses propriétés sensorielles et à ses potentialités comme source d'enzymes protéolytiques.

Introduction. En France, Cacopsylla pyri est un ravageur redouté en vergers de poiriers. La lutte contre cet insecte repose d'une part sur les traitements post-hivernaux sur adultes et œufs, d'autre part sur les traitements printaniers sur jeunes larves. Le retrait du commerce des colorants nitrés et la résistance de C. pyri aux pyréthrinoïdes utilisées contre les adultes en fin d'hiver rendent la lutte post-hivernale plus difficile, entraînant la présence au printemps de populations larvaires importantes avec parfois des échecs dans la lutte. Dans cette étude, nous avons testé l'efficacité, sur les différents stades de développement du psylle, de plusieurs insecticides utilisés seuls ou en association avec des huiles de pétrole. Matériel et méthode. Différentes populations de psylle prélevées à plusieurs dates dans différentes localités du sud-est français ont été traitées en laboratoire après migration des larves sur de jeunes plants de poiriers. Des pulvérisations d'insecticides ont été appliquées sur les différents stades larvaires L1-L2, L3-L4, L5 et œufs, alors que le stade adulte a été traité par application topique et test tarsal, notamment avec des pyréthrinoïdes, de l'abamectin, de l'amitraze et des huiles de pétrole. Résultats. L'efficacité de l'abamectin et de l'amitraze a été maximale sur les stades L1 à L4, et elle a baissé faiblement sur les larves du stade L5. Les DL50 de ces deux insecticides ont varié selon les localités et les dates de prélèvements. Quel que soit le stade de développement du psylle, les pyréthrinoïdes n'ont eu qu'une faible efficacité. Les tests avec les huiles ont fait apparaître une efficacité sur adultes par contact tarsal qui, ajoutée à leur efficacité sur jeunes larves, décrite par ailleurs, montrent l'intérêt de leur introduction dans les programmes de lutte contre C. pyri.

Introduction.Ximenia americana is a species developed in Africa and South America. This fruit tree is threatened by a dangerous process of genetic erosion. In vitro techniques could be used for its rapid clonal propagation. Since there is still no report on vitroculture of the species, we tested its micropropagation using axillary buds from mature plants of X. americana. Materials and methods. Single node explants of X. americana shoots were cultured on a proliferation medium made up with a MS medium containing different concentrations (2.5-15 μM) of two cytokinins [benzyladenine (BA) or kinetin] used individually or in combination with 0.5 μM of an auxin [2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) or naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA)]. Data were recorded after 5 weeks of culture. From proliferated shoot clumps, shoot explants (approximately 3 cm in length) were excised and transferred to rooting media made up with MS medium with or without 0.5 M of indolebutyric acid (IBA) (pH = 5.8). Results. The most rapid and earliest proliferation was observed in media with the lowest concentrations of cytokinins. Absence of growth regulators in media and media with 2,4-D or NAA considerably delayed bud proliferation. The number of shoots per explant increased with the increase of cytokinins. The maximum number of shoots was achieved in 10 μM BA. When shoots were transferred to rooting media, media supplemented with 0.5 μM IBA improved the rooting frequency, root quality and number of roots per cutting. After rooting, the vitroplants were transplanted into small polybags with 1:1 non-sterile soil and sand, then in the field after 4 weeks. Eighty percent of the plants taken from regulator-supplemented media were acclimated versus 15% of those taken from auxin-free media. Conclusion. The rapid clonal propagation of X. americana is possible through in vitro culture of nodal explants. The best cytokinin for shoot multiplication was BA.

Introduction. One of the challenges of the Malaysian pineapple industry is to develop new techniques for managing pineapple residues. A study was carried out to investi- gate whether K-humate can be produced from these residues. Materials and methods. Pineapple leaves were air-dried, shredded and chipped. Some of the shredded leaves were incinerated at 500 °C. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) was extracted by dissolving the ash obtai- ned in distilled water for 24 h at a ratio of 1:7 (ash / water) after which the sample was filte- red. After this extraction of KOH from the ashes of pineapple leaf residues, the remaining ash residues were further analyzed to assess the total and soluble K contents. Moreover, a given quantity of shredded leaf residues was mixed with chicken dung (as a source of microorga- nisms and nitrogen) and chicken feed. The mixture was composted with standard procedu- res. Humic acids were reconstituted using KOH from pineapple leaves with K from ash residues and K from composted pineapple leaves. Results and discussion. By reconstituting humic acids with KOH, a K-humate was produced with approximately 34.5% of its K readily soluble in water. A reconstitution of humic acids with K from ash residues produced a K-humate with approximately 3.34% of its K readily soluble in water. Conclusion. The K-humate produced from the reconstitution of humic acids with K from KOH can be used in fertigation programmes as a source of K while the K-humate produced through the reconsti- tution of humic acids with K from ash residues can be used as a source of K for fresh water fishes.

Introduction. Les effets de la consommation de fruits et légumes vis-à-vis de pathologies ont été déjà mis en évidence par de nombreuses études dans lesquelles, en particulier, la consommation de la pomme a pu être corrélée à un effet protecteur significatif. Le document présente une synthèse des résultats qui ont été obtenus à l'issue de cette série d'études. Les fractions nutritionnellement actives de la pomme. Les apports de la pomme en glucides, polyphénols, minéraux, anions organiques et vitamines ont été successivement analysés et commentés en fonction des effets de ces éléments sur la santé humaine. Les effets santé potentiels de la pomme. Les effets protecteurs de la pomme vis-à-vis du risque cardiovasculaire ont été tout d'abord exposés ; des effets plus spécifiques ont ensuite été passés en revue : effets sur le statut insulinique et sur le statut antioxydant, effets antiacidosiques et impact sur les fermentations digestives dans le côlon. Conclusion. La pomme possède, d'un point de vue nutrition préventive, des potentialités très intéressantes. Un grand nombre d'effets santé qui lui sont attribués dépendrait d'interactions entre divers nutriments comme, par exemple, les interactions entre les fibres et certains polyphénols. Ces interactions sont encore mal connues ; leur étude semble prometteuse et pourrait être transposée à de nombreux aliments d'origine végétale.
